the cat king being desire's son is a great headcanon but also given that the other child of desire in sandman is part of a multi-decade scheme to topple dream of the endless i think it would be funny if desire considers him kind of a family disappointment because he just seems to hang out in this one town in the pacific northwest being dramatic. yeah this is my son he hasn't gotten close to destroying reality even once. he lives in an abandoned warehouse. he's hung up on an uptight edwardian ghost who won't even give him the time of day. cringe.

anyway since Dream just manifests his little Outfits:tm: and isn't an actual physical being i fully headcanon that part of why he doesn't accept Death's offers of food/drink/taking off shoes to touch grass is that a good 80% of the time he doesn't actually manifest more than necessary so

no he can't take the shoes off, he's a goth little outfit walking around with hands and a head. Underneath the coat he's like a sworling darkness void or whatever

Hob finds this all fascinating especially considering the implications of Dream having left his tophat behind at the bar that one time but then again he also knows better than to question it and is just happy that Dream graces him with a full physical form more often than not, even if that form is sometimes a cat or a bird or a beautiful nightmarish Entity

For some reason I'm imagining Hob and Dream getting together and Hob- closet monster fucker- hesitantly asks about Dream's shapeshifting abilities. But of course Dream- idiot with zero self-esteem- immediately assumes that Hob asked because Dream's form must be "unattractive by human beauty standards". So suddenly Dream keeps showing up looking like various supermodels and now Hob has to figure out the best way to explain that actually Hob is head over heels for Dream's usual form, he just wanted like. Tentacles.

Dream of the Endless would be a great professor, but you know what else he'd be amazing at?

Children's Librarian

Kids are full of stories. He would absolutely love to hear them and help nurture that creativity. The really young ones could be read to and have nap time. Parents would love him. Kids would love him. Hob would love him.

With Hob having lived for approximately six and a half centuries, he's done a lot more sleeping than most living creatures (except maybe cats) and with that, he's probably met a significant number of the dreams and nightmares in The Dreaming at some point.

Hob is the quintessential dreamer, the dreams adore him, but his life has also not been easy and he's well-acquainted with the nightmares as well.

What I'm saying is, when Dream finally brings Hob to the Dreaming to introduce him to the family give him a tour of the realm, the dreams and nightmares come out to meet Hob like he's their old friend. Hob is strangely touched and also having the time of his life, while Dream is pouting that his creations have stolen Hob's attention away.

edwin is a better, stronger man than i, because i would be infinitely more dramatic and petty in his position when crystal enters the scene and charles starts paying attention to her. i would have comic!edwin’s reaction at least (accusing charles of choosing girls over him, storming off to solve cases on his own and deciding to do shit that will get him into trouble so that charles has to come rescue him, etc) but i’d probably take it a step further. i’d be like “i guess you want me to go back to hell then since i’m basically nothing to you 😒” and then i’d legitimately go back to hell JUST to see if he came after me. if he didn’t come after me then an eternity of torture in hell is nothing compared to the pain of rejection and being replaced. but i’m also incredibly mentally ill, so.

(james acaster once told a story about a christmas where he asked his parents for a spice girls cd. he found out whilst at the pool with his family that his sister was getting the cd instead of him. naturally, he tried to drown himself in the pool to make his parents feel guilty. that’s my vibe if i were ever in edwin’s position.)

Listen. Listen. In no universe will I pretend that Dream wasn’t in the wrong when he condemned Nada to Hell. That was fucked up.

But bear with me and trust that I know that while we take a step back from that for a second to talk about something else.

Nada saw Dream from afar, fell in love with him, and went on a quest to track him down. Once she finds Some Guy In A Mask (not realizing who he is) she talks about how she loves this mystery man so much. Mask Guy is like “For real?” and she’s like “For real for real!!” Then he takes off his mask and is like “this is amazing I absolutely love you too!!” and Nada is immediately like “oh shit, Dream?? Of the Endless??? Nvm gotta go”

Everything after that is 100% shitty of Dream. Not arguing that. However, treating this as fictional characters in a story….

A woman saw Dream, claimed to love him enough to track him down, and then as soon as she found out who he was she was horrified.

So anyway when I think about Dream not wanting to reveal his identity to Hob that’s what I’m thinking about.
