Burchard Scholars gather to network, connect, and learn

The Burchard Scholars Program pairs expert faculty with promising MIT sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated excellence in the humanities, arts, or social sciences. Launched in 1986, the program continues to demonstrate the importance of an integrated approach to scholarship and education. 

Administered by the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS), the program features a series of dinner discussions between student participants and experts and thought leaders from across SHASS disciplines. The scholars, with the support of guest speakers and faculty fellows, develop respectful and adaptable approaches to engaging in complex intellectual discussions. The program is named in honor of John Ely Burchard, former dean of SHASS.

MIT students chosen to be Burchard Scholars are consistently among finalists for Rhodes, Marshall, and other major scholarships and fellowships.

About 35 MIT undergraduates are selected each year for the competitive program. Each cohort of scholars participate for one calendar year, from February through December.

Willow Huang, a biological engineering major, just wrapped a year as a Burchard Scholar, and calls it a valuable experience. “I’m glad I applied,” she says. “We had thought-provoking talks over the course of the year.” 

Huang also praises the program for helping her improve her comprehension and communication skills. 

“These will undoubtedly help me in my career,” she says. “Attaining a level of knowledge in fields like art, history, and literature is an essential part of our education, as it broadens our perspective and helps us make more sense of things like cultural phenomena and political issues.”

Margery Resnick, a professor of literature and women’s and gender studies, is the Burchard Scholars program director. Resnick launched the faculty fellows component of the scholars program 15 years ago.

“These faculty members provide a consistent presence at the Burchards, since they attend the dinners and events and get to know the students well,” she says.

The faculty fellows, chosen by the dean, select the Burchard class and help create a valuable support system for students.

“By the end of the Burchard year, students know a range of faculty, not only the fellows, but also the speakers who come from different programs in the school,” Resnick says. “Most importantly, over the course of the year, students get to know each other and the faculty fellows well.”

The final Burchard Scholars dinner of 2023 was held Nov. 1 at Catalyst restaurant in Cambridge.

Before the dinners, faculty mix with students and come to know each other beyond the classroom. The faculty fellows then sit among the students, and, over dinner, exchange ideas based on the presentation.

“Conversations over dinner are lively, fun and engaging,” Resnick says.

“The scholars represent a diverse swath of studies across the Institute,” she adds, “But all are curious about fields other than their own.” 

Martin Beraja, the dinner’s guest on Nov. 1, is an MIT economist who studies the role of government policy in stabilizing business cycles and responding to the challenges posed by new digital and automation technologies. He presented “Artificial Intelligence and Governments: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” during the Burchard Scholars dinner.

The variety of presentation topics is a highlight for students chosen to be part of this year’s Burchard Scholars class.

“We’ll move our world forward by combining disciplines, not by staying in silos,” math and computer science major Laker Newhouse said after the dinner. “With highly capable AI on the horizon, it is important to build diverse, broad coalitions to secure a bright future.”

Benjamin Lou, a double major in math and physics and a philosophy minor, speaks highly of the opportunity to explore ideas outside his academic area. “Burchard shows other SHASS disciplines are valuable,” he notes.

Senior Iana Ferguson, a physics major, enjoyed this year’s dinner series. “It’s a setting where you hear topics you wouldn’t otherwise get,” she says. “Connecting disciplines has value outside physics.”

Jeda. Ah, bertanya pun perlu keizinan? Pastinya bakal melukakan.

"Apa dia?"

"Dulu...kau suka menatap langit penuh bintang. Kau suka merenung jambangan bunga. Kau suka melihat rintik hujan. Kenapa sekarang tidak?"

Manusia suka hidup dalam nostalgia. Dulu yang patutnya sudah terkubur selalu saja dikejutkan kembali dari lenanya yang panjang. Apa memang hidup kita yang seharusnya maju ke hadapan sesekali bakal tergelincir ke masa silam?

"Dulu ketika aku menatap langit penuh bintang pasti terbayang wajahnya yang paling terang. Ketika aku merenung jambangan bunga yang mekar pasti terimbas wajahnya yang paling berseri. Ketika aku melihat rintik hujan yang misteri pasti terkenang wajahnya yang paling menyegarkan. Sekarang tidak lagi."

Ya, tidak lagi. Untuk apa berterusan mendambakan orang yang hati dan cintanya milik orang lain?

"Jadi...kau benci dia?"

Benci tak akan membawa apa-apa manfaat.

"Kalau ada yang patut dibenci, itu adalah aku. Kerana aku mudah menyayangi. Mudah berharap. Mudah memaafkan."

Mudah untuk melakukan apa-apa untuk orang kita sayangi. Yang sukarnya, melakukan sesuatu untuk diri sendiri sesudah mereka pergi.

"Cinta memang melukakan."

Tidak. Bukan cinta yang melukakan. Yang melukakan kita adalah sifat, perasaan, dan alasan yang datang bersama cinta itu.

"Tak ada siapa yang mahu bercinta hanya untuk dilukakan. Yang salah bukan orang lain tapi diri sendiri. Kalau kita tak mudah buka hati pasti kita tak akan luka seteruk ini."

BUDIMAN EXHIBITION

The Budiman exhibition held by Guerilla Artchitects at Melabau Complex is an art exhibition reminiscing the mascot of Brunei during the Sea Games in 1999. Awang Budiman was Brunei famous icon up until now. 'The Budiman' art exhibition aim to unleash the artist's creativity and perspective on the Budiman's icon with fresh looks and in individual style. The artwork ranging from works of art in painting medium, miniature sculpture and merchandise from various artists and students who have participated in the exhibition.

I was one of the artist involve in preparing of this exhibition and also exhibit my work there. It took us 3 days to prepare the exhibition and hang up the artworks. I was part of Guerilla Artchitects member and it is a must for us to showcase our talents related to the theme. It took me few weeks to complete my design before the showcase. My artwork titled ''The Oddverse" is a combination of Mickey Mouse and Awang Budiman together which portrayed my childhood and adolescence and heavily influenced by the New York-based artist, Brian Donelly who is also known as Kaws. The first thing that ceme into my mind on Awang Budiman is about how patriotism the iconic is. Awang Budiman  represents the national philosophy of Brunei Melayu Islam Beraja which most of us are aware of. During the entire exhibiton, visitors would remember the Awang Budiman as the mascot during the historic moment of Brunei SEA Games in 1999. This is to celebrate that Awang Budiman as part of Bruneien hearts that we would not want to forget.

Goddess Shachi or Indrani or Aindri or Paulami is one of the Sapta Matrikas—the seven divine mothers or Saptamatris in Hindu religion. It is said that she has similar characteristics to Indra and the same Vahana or vehicle, a white elephant. A puja dedicated to Goddess Aindrani is performed during the Ashada Navratri.

She has a significance in Vedic literature in developing the idea of Shakti which denotes power, the feminine personified might. She gave origin to the concept that a female consort, whether she is Parvati or Kali, is the most important Shakti of all, thus becoming the role model for all the goddesses in later periods (the Purana has several mentions of this concept).

She is most popular Matrika in Marwar . Her Yantra is commonly seen at entrance of Shops and Malls . Her famous temple is in Osiyan near Jodhpur .

The mother goddess Sachiya (also spelled as Sachayay Mata and Sachchiyay Mata, Hindi : सच्चियाय माता/सच्चिया माता) is worshipped there by Maid Kshatriya Swarnakar (Kulthiya families), Marwadi, Oswal, Agarwal, Maheshwari ,Karnawat, and Mahecha (Maru Kansara Soni from Beraja-Kutch). Rajputs , Lakhesars Kumawat (Kumhar sub-caste), Oswals , Charans , Jains , Pareeks Bhramins , and many other castes living in Rajasthan, and North India. The temple was built by the Parmar King Upendre for his Kuldevi in the 9th to 10th century CE.

Elok Nagari Kerana Penghulu

Been reading more of my Federation Museums Journals. 

In Volume 17, from 1972, is Nordin Selat’s “Elok Nagari Kerana Penghulu: The Concept of Leadership In Adat Perpatih, Adat Minangkabau”.

The word “adat” is generally translated as “tradition”. The “Adat” in this case properly refers to the customary legal code of the Minangkabau people. Minang culture is famously matrilineal; its heartland lies in West Sumatra, but it also spawned colonies -- polities like Negeri Sembilan, my home state.

Reading this essay gives me the impression that to live under Adat law is to live in a society governed by poetic aphorism. Which is pretty neat.

For example, the legitimacy of the penghulu -- chief, or elder -- of an Adat community is enshrined in a series of maxims, including:

Tumbuhnya ditanam, TIngginya dianjung, Besarnya diampu.

He grows because he is planted, He is high because he is held aloft, He is great because he is made great.

The penghulu must be unanimously elected by his community. 

In Negeri Sembilan this principle extends to its Sultan-equivalent, the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar, “He Who Is Crowned Great” -- chosen by undangs, or influential “elector” penghulus. A proto-democratic oddity.

Penghulu beraja ke muafakat, Muafakat beraja kepada Yang Benar. Benar berdiri dengan sendirinya, Nan dinamakan alur dan patut.

The penghulu is ruled by consensus, Consensus is ruled by the Truth. Truth stands by itself, And is called that which is right and proper.

All adult members of an Adat territory are part of the muafakat. Community meetings debate issues affecting its territory, and there must be unanimous agreement for every decision.

“ ... at the end those who still do not agree usually yield to the majority opinion in the interest of harmony.” There’s a maxim for this, too:

Bulat air dek pembetung. Bulat kata dek muafakat.

Water is rounded through a bamboo pipe. Words are rounded through the consensus.

The ethics of political leadership are laid out in a series of colourful character sketches:

The Penghulu Nenek Mamak (“Genuine Traditional Elder”) is the model kind -- patient, intelligent, broad-minded, dignified, etc.

The Penghulu Ayam Gadang (“Big Rooster Elder”)’s fault is a combination of pride and limited intelligence -- “pushing his weight around and not listening to advice ... he will not bow to correction or council.”

The Penghulu Tagak-Tagak (“Coppersmith Bird Elder”) is named after the coppersmith, which “makes only occasional staccato sounds by hitting his beak against the wood of a tree, not using his own voice.”

"In the same way the Penghulu only speaks once in a while at muafakat in a silly, empty way, not voicing his own opinion but expressing or agreeing to another’s.”

In other words, the dude has no spine.

The Penghulu Pinak Sirawa (“Underpants Elder”) is an active threat against the people:

“What he lacks is character. He uses his brains to oppress and exploit his own people ... he acts as batu api (flintstone) to spark off misunderstandings ... he is lidah bercabang (fork-tongued) and talam dua muka (double-faced) ... His motto is divide and rule. Thus he builds an empire.”

Though its leaders are elected, the Adat is definitely not an egalitarian code, and comes complete with a rationalisation of why the chief must be a rich bigshot:

“... one of the qualities of the ideal Penghulu is that he should be well-to-do. The word used is berkecukupan having enough, lacking nothing ... He should be rich enough to support the life style expected of a Penghulu, with all the status symbols ... A poor Penghulu would be a liability to the group he leads ... the individual property of the members would sometimes have to be used to enable the Penghulu to hold feasts and ceremonies ... There is also the danger of the Penghulu being tempted by bribes ...”

My favourite bit is the aphorism about how the chief should deal with a breach of Adat:

Ular dipalu biar mati, Kayu pemalu jangan patah, Tanah dipalu jangan limbang.

The snake must be beaten to death, The stick must not break, The earth must not be dented.

The snake is evil, and evil must be ended -- but ending evil is understood also as an act of violence. Therefore utmost care must be taken, so harm does not come to the self, or to the world.

Dari situlah tersingkap tinggi belang kakinya Perabowo Subianto yang dulunya Perabowo Subianto anak menantu President Suharto cucu Hameng Kubuwono yang kedua keturunan Anjing. Perabowo dijadikan Suharto Anjing itu bertugas sebagai tukang culik dan tukang bunuh anak anak bangsa Indonesia terdiri dari para Mahasiswa yang Ambisi melihat Pemerintahan Suharto, sudah tidak layak seperti seorang Manusia yang menjadi President menjalankan pergerakan Pemerintah Beraja di Mata Bersultan di Hati sikap Suharto Anjing itu.

Maka dari sinilah terlihat Jasa besar dan jasa yang ternilai sangat baik perbuatan sikap Sang Jenderal Wiranto sebagai Hulubalang Meliter yang tidak akan pernah terlupakan oleh segenap seluruh Rakyat Indonesia dimana punjua anak bangsa berada di Dunia ini. Karena tidak semua niat busuk yang berisi kejahatan permintaan Suharto serta Tin isterinya juga keinginan Jenderal Beny Murdani, yang tembus lulus sensor agar Sang Jenderal Wiranto membasmi segala perbuatan anak bangsa yang melintangi keinginan Suharto dan Tin sebagai Isterinya serta Beny Murdani yang telah kerasukan asutan orang orang China, sehingga Perabowo Subianto memintak kepada Panglima Jenderal Wiranto beberapa Unit Helykopter dan Tank Baja tujuan Perabowo Subianto ingin Kudetakan Pimpinan President BJ Habibie sebagai President ke 4 Negara Indonesia ketika itu. 'Malaysia tarik diri dari Statut Rome kerana...' - PM

Malaysia menarik diri daripada menyertai Statut Rome Mahkamah Jenayah Antarabangsa (ICC) yang telah dimeterai negara, kerana rakyat mudah terpesong dengan perasaan dan emosi, kata Perdana Menteri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, lapor MalaysiaKini. 

Untuk pengetahuan umum, ICC hanya membicarakan empat jenayah utama antarabangsa iaitu pembunuhan beramai-ramai (genocide), jenayah terhadap kemanusiaan, jenayah perang dan jenayah pencerobohan. 

"Kami menarik balik penyertaan dalam perjanjian itu kerana rakyat mudah terpesong dengan perasaan dan emosi," katanya.

Senin ini, di bulan lalu, aku baru perjalanan dari daerah kapuk bertemu dengan saudara, setelah berapi berangin hingga tiada semalaman, kemudian aku teruskan untuk istirahat dengan hati raga yang lelah.

Dipagi Seninnya saya mengejar kereta dengan sekuat tenaga lihormati Rahmatia, bercerita sepanjang rel dengan diri sendiri, berdoa pada ilahi dan beraja' berpasrah pada apapun itu, rasa, asa, berterbangan dalam diri menuju harap.
