ok so i figured out why the songs in the new disney movie Wish suck so bad - for the movie celebrating 100 years of mostly animated movie MUSICALS, they didn’t get a songwriter who writes MUSICALS. they got two POP songwriters (Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, who’ve written for a lot of big stars like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, etc). despite lin-manuel’s faults, that man can cook up a song and had won a tony even before hamilton. there’s a reason moana and encanto went crazy. the anderson-lopezes made frozen and frozen II a HIT. maybe if they didnt have them chained to a desk writing two more frozen movies they could’ve worked on Wish instead. the ICON alan menken completed his EGOT from the daytime emmy he won for writing a song just for the tangled TV SERIES in 2020, and they couldnt even get him back?! for the movie celebrating 100 years of animated musicals?!!!

one of the directors of the film is Chris Buck, who did Tarzan - that movie only really has one or MAYBE two songs sung by the characters, and is mostly a soundtrack by Phil Collins instead. but thats a FULL soundtrack that was supposed to be pop the whole way through, not a musical.

one of the only times they got a pop songwriter to do an animated musical was Elton John for the Lion King, but he went on to write several popular musicals after that.

they got a big Broadway star like Ariana Debose, and a big Hollywood star who can really sing like Chris Pine, on that movie and gave them POP composers? for the 100th anniversary? this is the studio that made HAMLET WITH LIONS and a BOOK BY VICTOR HUGO into legendary animated musicals. what the FUCK happened? which executive made this stupid ass choice?

Trivia:

○ The guys had previously recorded other versions of several of these songs, one together, and the rest with different performers.

"Bad Guy" was included in VoicePlay's "Billie Eilish in 3 Minutes" medley that was part of their spooky season offerings for the year.

It was also covered by PattyCake's incarnation of Maleficent to coincide with the release of Disney's live-action film sequel.

J.None had filmed multiple edutainment parodies with his friend Nikita for her JamSchooled series that were released both before and after this one. "7 Rings" became a lesson about money; "Old Town Road" turned into a tutorial on skeletal anatomy; and "Señorita" morphed into a rundown of ecosystems.

○ Lizzo's video for "Good As Hell" celebrates her history as a flute player in the school marching band. The members of VoicePlay are talented insturmentalists in their own rights.

Layne has been playing violin since he was four years old, primarily studying the Suzuki method, and was a member of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra. He also learned a bit of piano from his mom, and knows enough drum kit technique to convincingly mime while he beatboxes.

Geoff has played piano since middle school, studying both classical and jazz techniques. He also knows a little guitar, and learned to play the harmonica for a stint in the Blues Brothers show at Universal Studios.

Earl played trumpet and french horn through middle school and high school band.

Eli plays a bit of both piano and guitar, some of which he honed during his days in various rock bands.

J.None plays a number of instruments "passably" but doesn't consider himself proficient in any of them. They include piano, violin, guitar, accordion, saxophone, and clarinet.

○ The main melody of "Memories" contains a very recognizable portion of Pachelbel's "Canon in D", which (surprisingly) hasn't yet been included in any of VoicePlay's classical pieces or mashups.

  luciana  and  her  older  brother  were dragged  along  to  anything  and  everything  their  parents  could  get  them  into  .  a  way  to  show  the  world  they  had  something  they  didn't  . . .  that their family  had  everything  .  the  perfect  little  family  ,  the  riches  ,  the  fame  . . .  it  was  everything  the  money  and  fame  hungry  parents  wanted , even if it was anything but the truth .

a question , was  the  life  they  lead  really  all  that  perfect  or  great  ?  not  at  all  .  luciana  knew  at  a  young  age  how  dysfunctional  her  family  was  .  the  way  they  said  one  thing  to  the  world  but  everything  was  completely  opposite  or  different  inside  . . .  it  confused  her  .  the  constant  distrust  in  the  people  around  her  and  this  loneliness  she  had  never  been  able  to  let  go  of began to creep onto her until it swallowed her whole  . 

the  moment  she  was  able  to  be  put  in  front  of  a  camera  ,  luciana's  parents  made  sure  of  it  .  putting  her  in  the  hands  of  any  and  every  person  in  the  industry  .  no  real  safety  net  despite  having  her  so - called  mom - ager  there  to  protect  her  .  if  anything  ,  luci  felt  as  though  she  was  less  protected  when  her  mother  was  around  .  the  way  the  woman  would  throw  her  to  the  wolves  just  to  get  the  attention  she  desired  .  wanting  to  live  through  her  daughter  .  playing  puppet master  and  treating  her  own  child  as  if  she  was  a  little  doll  she  could  bend  and  control  anyway  she  wanted  to  .

a  little  reckless  in  her  behavior  ,  although  under  the  radar  .  then  again  ,  she'd  always  felt  like  she  could  be  screaming  for  help  in  front  of  the  people  in  her  life  and  no  one  would  see  or  hear  her  .  after  an  episode  that  was  too  catastrophic  to  ignore  ,  her  parents  sent  her  off  to  a  nature  retreat  . . .  a  way  to  be  calm  and  become  one  with  the  earth  .  although  ,  they  didn't  want  to  address  the  situation  of  not  only  what  their  daughter  had  been  through  and  the  secrets  she  held  onto  but  they  also  didn't  want  to  believe  that  there  could  be  something  actually  wrong  with  her  . or something she could actually be struggling with .  instead  sending  her  off  on  a  pointless  journey  that  didn't  take  away  all  the  hurt  and  pain  she  had  been  through  .

once  back  ,  she  was  thrown  back  into  her  work  .  back  to  playing  the  part  of  the  perfect  untouched  and  lovely  daughter  her  mother  wanted  her  to  be  .  back  to  being  the  little  doll  her  mother  wanted  to  control  .

On this day in 1993, Eazy-E protégés Blood of Abraham, a Jewish hip hop group, released their debut album ‘Future Profits’.

The album gained publicity from ads centered on large text proclaiming “Jesus was a Black Jew”.

Blood of Abraham was sighed to Ruthless Records, a record label founded by N.W.A. member Eric “Eazy-E” Wright. The group composed of members Benjamin “MC Benyad” Mor and David “MC Mazik” Saevitz.

They gained a minor following that eventually led them to wider exposure through a television appearance on ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ in 1994.

A key characteristic of the group was their unapologetic Jewish identity. Their best-known track, "N*ggaz and Jewz (Some Say K*kes)", was a call for Black and Jewish unity. The song featured a verse from Eazy-E, as well as the first recorded appearance of will.i.am, known at the time as Will 1X.

Will’s association with the group likely lead to him chanting the Hebrew phrases “mozel tov” and “l’chaim” throughout the Black Eyed Peas song “I Gotta Feeling”, the highest selling digital single in the United States. It also likely explains why Mor directed the video for the song.

Although Blood of Abraham has been on hiatus since 2000, the members have continued working in entertainment. a  little  reckless  in  her  behavior  ,  although  under  the  radar  .  then  again  ,  she'd  always  felt  like  she  could  be  screaming  for  help  in  front  of  the  people  in  her  life  and  no  one  would  see  or  hear  her  .  after  an  episode  that  was  too  catastrophic  to  ignore  ,  her  parents  sent  her  off  to  a  nature  retreat  . . .  a  way  to  be  calm  and  become  one  with  the  earth  .  although  ,  they  didn't  want  to  address  the  situation  of  not  only  what  their  daughter  had  been  through  and  the  secrets  she  held  onto  but  they  also  didn't  want  to  believe  that  there  could  be  something  actually  wrong  with  her  . or something she could actually be struggling with .  instead  sending  her  off  on  a  pointless  journey  that  didn't  take  away  all  the  hurt  and  pain  she  had  been  through  .

once back , luci's parents moved their family to lincoln city , where luciana ended up becoming a student at st. mary's , now known as new horizons for her last couple years of high school . this was a new start . new masks for the family to wear but in a much more quiet setting .

luci didn't really know christopher wilder but from afar , she had always had a way of latching onto different boys even if they didn't know it . nevertheless , after everything had happened . luci had stayed in lincoln city for a bit before her family decided to move back to new york , where she followed . starting her career and thinking , the past was in the best . but she obviously spoke too soon .

Trivia:

○ The obvious starting point for this project was Jusin Beiber's "Beauty and a Beat", which Tony and Layne had performed as part of VoicePlay's "Wow! Vol. 1" medley during the 2015 Sing-Off tour, but one song does not a full plot make. The guys delved into his extended catalogue to find songs that fit certain story beats and would blend well with the animated movie's score.

○ This was an incredibly ambtious undertaking. According to the PattyCake guys, preparations took five months, and filming spanned "six long days" (and nights, clearly).

○ All that hard work paid off, though, since they were able to time their YouTube release for the same day that the Emma Watson movie hit theaters.

○ VoicePlay recorded a Beauty and the Beast medley for "Once Upon an Ever After" (2012), their first album with Tony as a member of the group. Excerpts from that arrangement later appeared in their music videos "Be Our Guest", "Aca Top 10 – Disney Sidekicks", and "Aca Top 10 – Disney Villains". They also included "Belle" in their "Aca Top 10 – Broadway" countdown.

○ "Love Yourself" was the first song in VoicePlay's PartWork series, which they started as preparation for Tony leaving the group.

○ Layne occasionally used "Baby" as his interruption at the end of VoicePlay's "Road Trip" medley / comedy sketch.

○ On top of their usual studio work, this production required multiple location shoots:

The outdoor village scenes were filmed at the Casa Feliz museum.

Beast's castle interior was the Ballroom at Church Street, which closed in 2019, and was demolished 2023.

The tavern was an actual bar, the Tap Room at Dubsdread.

○ Between the main cast and dozens of background folks, they needed so many costumes that Tony enlisted his mom Anita to help wrangle them all.

○ There are several of Tony's fellow "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni among the main cast:

Michael (Gaston) played Dracula and Frankenstein's monster.

Joey (LaFou) played Wolfman and Dracula.

Brad (Prince Adam) was a dancer in the final "Mashup" iteration of the show.

○ There are also many friends and family among the background cast and crew, including several cast members from previous Unexpected Musicals. Olivia Adkins and Leah Lowman are among the village crowd as Snow White and Cinderella. Rachel Copeland and Matthew Buckner are in the tavern crowd, but not as their previous characters. Many of the other villagers were clubgoers in "Hocus Heathens".

Problem with the hypothetical union song is that it was either written by AI or a very generic popsong writer that doesn't know how to write theater music. Which is the problem with most of the songs. The music directors dont work for Disney, so why would they care about unions for the company? You should question why all of a sudden a bunch of new staff worked on the movie instead of the old staff that were most likely fired before or after the strikes

So I looked it up and Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice were the songwriters for the music in Wish (yes, that includes the reprise). And yes, they are generic pop writers (Michaels having worked with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, P!nk, and Briteny Spears while Rice worked with Lady Gaga, Nick Jonas, Robin Thick, and John Legend). But pop style songs have worked for Disney in the past--just look at Try Everything from Zootopia or any of the Tarzan songs.

And while the musical directors/songwriters may not care specifically for the unions of Disney, I was more focused on the fact that the 'This Wish reprise' and Wish in general with the plot being what it was could be cognizant of unions (many people joining together to give themselves power to match or even overpower the powerful) was ironic considering the side of the negotiating table Disney was on.
