Manchester City finally produced a Champions League performance worthy of their status as one of European football’s elite clubs by beating Real Madrid 2-1 away in Wednesday’s last-16 first leg after pulling off a stunning late fightback.

Kevin De Bruyne kept his cool to beat Belgium team mate Thibaut Courtois from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute to give City the lead after Gabriel Jesus had headed home a cross from De Bruyne to pull the visitors level in the 78th minute.

City coach Pep Guardiola, who has not gone past the quarter-final in his three previous seasons with the club, was delighted with how his side turned the match around but also said the tie was still wide open.

“Winning in the Bernabeu gives us great satisfaction, it’s incredible for us and not something this club is used to. I’m very pleased with the result and the performance, we showed great personality,” he said before sounding a note of caution. “If there is one club who was capable of turning a tie around it is Real Madrid, they have the history and experience in this competition to do it.”

Ramos will be suspended for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on March 17 while City’s influential defender Aymeric Laporte was forced off injured in the first half, another setback in a season marked by fitness troubles.

City went into the match with a two-year ban from European competition hanging around their necks for defying UEFA’s rules on financial fair play although the club submitted an appeal against the sanction earlier this week.

Real’s best chance of the first half came when Karim Benzema had a header saved by Ederson and the ball fell to Vinicius Jr. but the teenager fell over just as he was shaping to shoot into the unguarded net.

The Brazilian was not fazed by the miss, though, and played a crucial part in breaking the deadlock by chasing down Fernandinho and laying on the pass for Isco to score.

Real’s fans felt they were on the familiar path to victory in their favourite competition and began to sing ‘We are the Kings of Europe’, but it was City, whose only European trophy came in the 1970 Cup Winners’ Cup, who had the last laugh.

“There’s no explanation for what happened, we had 75 spectacular minutes and in the last 15 minutes we didn’t do what we needed to do, we lacked intensity and control and they had two attacks and scored twice,” said Real’s Casemiro. “But the tie is not over, if there is a team that is capable of a comeback it is Real Madrid.”

Martinez says “We faced eye-to-eye to Brazil. We overcame a 2-0 deficit against Japan — that is the first time it happened since 1966.

We scored the biggest amount of goals in a Belgian team in World Cup history. We got 10 different goal scorers — which is a record also with France (1982) and Italy (2006).”

The Belgium coach says the records “showed the strength of this side.”

“We’ve been a team. We’ve suffered together. We’ve played football that a mutual fan of the World Cup really enjoyed,” he says. “We got the best qualification for Belgium in the history of the World Cup and that makes me very, very proud.” ___ 8:05 p.m.

FIFA says it also warned England’s Football Association for the misconduct of a small number of fans singing “political chants” during its semifinals loss on Wednesday.

At the same game against Croatia, two England players wore a type of branded sock FIFA has cracked down on at this tournament. FIFA says the “unauthorized commercial branding” repeated a previous offense in England’s quarterfinals win against Sweden.

That also resulted in a 70,000 Swiss francs ($69,900) fine.

The fines had nothing to do with the holey socks Danny Rose wore in the third-place game against Belgium. ___ 6:05 p.m.

The holes in Danny Rose’s socks generated plenty of online debate during England’s World Cup third-place playoff against Belgium.

FIFA has fined players for wearing socks which didn’t comply with uniform or sponsorship regulations during the tournament, but there doesn’t seem to be any rules against holey socks. Some speculated the holes — which were relatively round and in both socks — were designed to prevent cramps. There’s no scientific evidence for that.

And there was no official explanation before Rose was replaced just at halftime when England was trailing Belgium 1-0. ___ 5: 47 p.m.

Belgium has taken a 1-0 lead into halftime in its World Cup third-place playoff against England.

Thomas Meunier gave the Belgians the lead in the fourth minute, scoring from close range off a cross from Nacer Chadli.

Belgium could have made it 2-0 seven minutes later when Kevin de Bruyne took the ball in a good position but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a key save.

England started the game slowly, looking every inch a team which was taken to extra time in its semifinal loss to Croatia three days earlier, despite making five changes to the starting lineup.

A quick and direct Belgian attack in the fourth minute ended with Nacer Chadli crossing from the left wing to Meunier, who beat Danny Rose to the ball and shot past Jordan Pickford in goal.

It’s the first goal of the tournament for Meunier in five games. He is the 10th goal scorer for Belgium in this tournament, helping his team equal a record held by Italy (2006) and France (1982).

Belgium is aiming for its best-ever World Cup finish, beating fourth place in 1986. ___ 4 p.m.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Phil Jones will start for England in the World Cup third-place game against Belgium among five changes made by coach Gareth Southgate.

There’s also a start for Eric Dier, Fabian Delph and Danny Rose.

Harry Kane, the tournament’s leading scorer, remains in the lineup following the World Cup semifinal loss to Croatia.

The players dropped to the bench are Ashley Young, Kyle Walker and the central midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli.

Belgium had a day’s extra rest after its semifinal loss to France, and coach Roberto Martinez has made just two changes.

Thomas Meunier and Youri Tielemans will start in the Belgian midfield in place of Marouane Fellaini and Moussa Dembele.

Croatia captain Luka Modric believes the toughness of his World Cup squad has some roots in the war that broke up the former Yugoslavia.

On the eve of the soccer World Cup final against France, Modric has been reluctant to go too deeply into answering a question from a reporter who identified himself as a war correspondent from the 1990s, when Croatia became an independent state.

The question was about “how this war forged the spirit of yourself and of the team.”

The 32-year-old Modric was a child when his grandfather was killed and his family forced from its home. He replied by saying “I don’t like to go back to these things. It’s all in the past.”

He adds “Of course, everything influences you. It’s made us resilient as people, as the nation.”

Croatia has spent the maximum amount of time on the field at this World Cup. The team playing extra-time in all three knockout games, and trailed to the first goal scored each time.

Modric has covered more yards than any player at the World Cup, registering 63.03 kilometers (39 miles) in six games, according to FIFA.

15:35: Eden Hazard is in the best form of his life but that doesn’t matter to his Chelsea colleague Thibaut Courtois, who still wants more.

You just can’t please some people, right?

The Belgians are considered a good outside bet to lift the World Cup for the first time and start the tournament against rank outsiders Panama in Group G.

Courtois said his Chelsea team mate Hazard, who scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final last month, was highly motivated.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen him train or play as amazing as in the last three games,” Courtois told reporters. “I think he has reached another level of his game.”

Can This New Crop Of Players Erase England’s Underachieving Past?

There is an uncharacteristic air of hope this year surrounding an uncharacteristic England team. To be an England supporter is to inherit a contradictory combination of utter nihilism and raging anger, expecting nothing and everything at the same time. English players have developed an unfortunate reputation: They will wilt under the brightest lights, typified by the inability to hold their nerve during penalty shootouts.

But the perception of mental weakness between generations is, to some extent, a consequence of the spread-out nature of international tournaments. The World Cup is rare and unpredictable: Germany, the defending champion, had just a 13 percent chance of winning in Russia going into the tournament, according to FiveThirtyEight’s model, and even Brazil, the favorite, had less than a 20 percent chance.

Using pre-tournament Elo ratings going back to 1930, we can construct a logistic regression to look at how many World Cup trophies each country might have expected based on team strength, the competition format and whether the country was hosting.1

Brazil, Germany and Italy have roughly a pair of trophies each more than the model’s predictions based on their strength before the tournament, which illustrates that the World Cup is hardly a tale of who the favorite is going in.

England has underachieved, winning a solitary trophy relative to 1.62 expected World Cups. By our measure, only Hungary, which was one of the world’s best in the 1950s, and the three-time runner-up Netherlands have seen a bigger discrepancy. English supporters born after 1966 are justified in feeling a tad underwhelmed by the team’s performances on the world stage, but it could be worse — of the underachievers, England is the only team to actually have managed a win at all.

Nonetheless, the team that will face Tunisia on Monday is new and exciting. Gone are the mainstays from the past three World Cups, players like Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. Because of the players’ age and inexperience, this team is free of the weight of expectation — despite having the seventh best pre-tournament chance of taking the trophy home, according to FiveThirtyEight predictions. And for the neutral fan, too, England has a lot to offer.

Tactical coherence

Pep Guardiola — the current manager of Manchester City, which became the first team in history to break the 100-point mark in the Premier League — has had an indirect hand in the past two World Cup-winning teams. In the final against the Netherlands in 2010, eight players featured on the pitch for Spain had been coached by Guardiola in his time at Barcelona. When Mario Götze broke Argentinian hearts in 2014, he was one of seven German players in the final to have played under the Catalan manager that season at Bayern Munich.

This is likely to be less about Guardiola specifically, despite his brilliance, and more about his indirect influence on the tactical coherence of a national team. With him at the helm of the country’s best side, his players would naturally get national team starts; the ability of those players to click when on the pitch together meant that they had more coherent tactics than other teams stacked with good players. Indeed, Italy, which won the 2006 World Cup with a quintessentially Italian style of football, featured a spine of five Juventus players in the final.

With only four Manchester City players on the squad, manager Gareth Southgate will pay homage to Guardiola’s team in style more than in personnel. Man City midfielders David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne are playing for Spain and Belgium respectively, but Southgate will try to replicate them by using Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli as “free eights” in the midfield. England has six more players total from Tottenham, managed by Mauricio Pochettino, and Liverpool, managed by Jürgen Klopp. These teams, like City, press the opposition extremely aggressively out of possession, with all three in the top 10 in Europe’s biggest competitions this season in terms of how quickly they shut down their opponents:

The big five leagues are the Premier League (England), Bundesliga (Germany), Ligue 1 (France), La Liga (Spain) and Serie A (Italy).

Southgate’s plan seems to be to put the players from these teams into a compatible lineup before re-creating their off-the-ball tactics. As I noted in my Group G preview, of all the teams to qualify for the World Cup, England ranks third in breaking up an opponent’s possession before it completes three passes, behind only Germany and Spain.

England’s famed problem has been getting its generational talents to click together. For once, the big teams in the Premier League are kindred spirits tactically, and this will have an impact on the national team’s ability to leverage the players provided by those clubs.

Young attackers

England is fielding an extremely young side in Russia, with an average age of 26 — only Nigeria is younger. And England’s average of 19 caps per player makes it the most inexperienced side in the competition.2 But while they may be relatively new to the international stage, these youngsters are by no means immature in terms of elite soccer. England’s attack, in particular, is filled to the brim with talent just ready to peak.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane, for example, is one of the best goal-scoring strikers in the world at the tender age of 24. Somewhat terrifyingly, he is still improving: He was even better at getting off quality shots this season than he was the year before. The expected goals per 90 minutes from his shots in the Premier League rose from 0.45 in 2016-17 to 0.75 this year.

Dele Alli, 22, will support Kane for their country as he does for their club. His 2017-18 season was marred for some by the idea that it was a regression compared with the year before. What really happened, though, was that he got fewer chances but created more. He also experienced a downturn in chance conversion, from scoring 44 percent more than might be expected based on chance quality in 2016-17 to underachieving it by 12 percent this season. All that made people forget that Alli is one of the brightest under-23 talents in the world. And nobody — apart from maybe Denmark’s Christian Eriksen — is better at supplying Kane.

Man City’s Raheem Sterling may have made recent headlines for getting a rifle tattooed on his leg, but the more important of his designs is the one on his arm of a young boy, wearing England’s No. 10 shirt, looking up at Wembley Stadium, the home of English football. He’s my player to watch for Group G because of his electric ability to both get and create chances, coming off the back of an incredibly productive league season with 18 goals and 11 assists. And he’s only 23.

Dark horses?

The biggest problem for England in terms of being a dark horse in Russia is its likely post-group opposition. The English have a good shot of making the quarterfinal (58 percent when the tourney began) but will probably have to face Germany or Brazil at that point, depending on whether England finishes above Belgium in their group. Winning a matchup against one of those powerhouses is a long shot, though anything can happen in a World Cup.

England has an exciting team of young stars, playing at stylistically compatible clubs, and a manager who seems tactically savvy despite his relative inexperience. Will Belgium’s Roberto Martinez Gamble Pay Off?

Even for the very best in the international game, finding a manager isn’t easy. Heading to the World Cup is no longer the pinnacle, and increasingly top coaches see international jobs as a semi-retirement. With fewer matches, shallow talent pools and smaller wages on offer, it’s not hard to see why the best avoid the national jobs.

That’s a big change in the international game. New managers are being promoted from the Under 21 side, rather than club football. It’s forced nations to get creative with their decisions,including Belgium’s move for Roberto Martinez.

The Spaniard was a left-field choice in 2016, being handed the reins to one of the most talented squads in world football. He went from Everton reject to man preparing a push to win the World Cup in just three months. Will that huge gamble pay off, or is this another missed opportunity for Belgium? Dropping Radja Nainggolan is a bold statement of intent, while it’s also a key step for Martinez, who looks set to build a functioning side out of Belgium’s talent.

Why Martinez?

Belgium’s up and coming squad missed the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships. That led to the appointment of Marc Wilmots, who was able to secure two tournament appearances for the Red Devils. However, two quarter-final defeats weren’t good enough, and they sacked him following the exit to Wales in France two years ago.

There were consistent problems throughout Wilmots’ time in charge. Both campaigns saw a very functional side, with no kind of organisation. The plan seemed to be flood the team with centre-halves and wait for someone to do something special. It was essentially the Tony Pulis approach on a grander scale. From there, the Belgians have made quite a switch by approaching Martinez to solve their issues.

His task is to avoid the pitfalls which hit Sven Goran Eriksson’s English golden generation. Shake them up tactically, find a way to combine their talents and win a quarter-final.

International Odd Couple

Getting a new voice to work alongside Martinez seemed like a smart idea for the Belgians. Getting in a specialist coach who the team would respect was a no brainer. However, of all the people you’d expect Martinez to appoint, Thierry Henry wasn’t one.

Anyone who’d seen Martinez managing Wigan or Everton in the top flight could have seen the issues there. While there was a blueprint for possession, there was little defensive solidity. It’s no coincidence that his great first year at Everton came as he built on the defence built by David Moyes. When that unravelled, so did his Everton team.

For Martinez to line up Henry beside him seems like a missed opportunity. He took his team with him in to his latest job, but adding a specialist defensive coach could have brought something different to the table. Will defensive issues bring down his reign with the Red Devils?

Is Martinez Doubting Himself?

Strangely, it seems like the former Everton boss is going the opposite way. Having installed a 3-4-3 set up, it seems like his team aren’t being adventurous enough. Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne spoke out after they drew 3-3 with Mexico, claiming they retreated back too much and gave up too much ground.

It doesn’t sound all that defensive to get involved in a six-goal thriller, but there is an issue for Martinez there. De Bruyne criticised the way that the full-backs dropped deep, leaving a five man defence, with the other five stuck in midfield. His Wigan and Everton sides pushed high and went after the ball. Now they’re much more restrained when it comes to winning the ball back.

While many have their doubts about Martinez’s chances, everyone would back against one of his sides trying to play defensively. They can call upon De Bruyne in the middle, so why run scared of possession?

What Can he do Differently?

The biggest worry for Belgium is that they’re going to end up with nothing to show from their golden years. They have the issue which many sides with golden generations end up with, a boom in young talent ends up with similar players competing with each other. England’s side had that, with so many central midfielders crammed in, there was no need to turn to the likes of Jake Livermore.

Belgium have a stock of impressive central defenders, along with some fantastic number 10s. They’re stocked at the back and in attacking midfield, while Romelu Lukaku has taken care of their issues up front. There’s been little movement at full-back, which is something that Martinez has tried to find a way around.

The Spaniard has to make this similar Belgian side work together, having seen De Bruyne and Hazard getting in each other’s way all too often. His current set up pushes the Man City man in to the heart of midfield, while captain Hazard is in a supporting role off Lukaku. To do that, Martinez switched to a 3-4-3, which also takes advantage of their great defensive line up.

While he was criticised throughout his spell in England, one thing Martinez did was build an identity. He helped build up Swansea early on, and he quickly took his passing style to Wigan. His opening year at Goodison Park saw an attacking verve to the side, which almost took them to the Champions League.

He has a big step up to make, but there’s a lot of quality for him to work with. While defensively questions remain for Martinez, the Red Devils could have stumbled on to an inspired choice.

MOSCOW — The Latest on Saturday at the World Cup (all times local): 7:15 p.m.

France captain Hugo Lloris says the team will not repeat a mistake of two years ago when it plays Croatia in the World Cup final.

As the 2016 European Championship host nation, France peaked in the semifinals by beating world champion Germany.

France then failed to reach the same high level in Paris and lost the final to Portugal, 1-0 after extra-time.

Lloris, who was France’s goalkeeper then, says: “I don’t think it’s going to happen again.”

Paul Pogba has said the French believed the Euro 2016 trophy was all but won after the semifinals.

Lloris notes 14 of France’s 23-man squad in Russia were not even at the Euros, while the other nine now benefit from a change in conditions.

Two years ago, France played a Thursday semifinal before the Sunday final. Here, France beat Belgium on Tuesday.

Lloris says: “A lot of things have changed, especially when it comes to recovery and preparation time.” ___ 6:51 p.m.

Belgium has achieved its best World Cup finish by beating England 2-0 in a third-place playoff, a game neither team really wanted to play.

Thomas Meunier gave Belgium the lead in the fourth minute when he prodded a Nacer Chadli cross past Jordan Pickford in the England goal.

Belgium was a constant threat on quick, incisive counterattacks and made it count again when Eden Hazard scored from a Kevin de Bruyne pass in the 82nd. Belgium’s previous best finish at the World Cup was fourth place in 1986.

It was Belgium’s second win over England in the tournament, following the 1-0 victory in the group stage.

Defender Toby Alderweireld denied England’s best chance of the game, sliding on the goal line to clear a chip from his Tottenham teammate Eric Dier. ___ 6: 40 p.m.

FIFA has fined England 70,000 Swiss francs ($69,900) for a second time at the World Cup for players wearing non-approved socks.

FIFA says it also warned England’s Football Association for the misconduct of a small number of fans singing “political chants” during its semifinals loss on Wednesday.

At the same game against Croatia, two England players wore a type of branded sock FIFA has cracked down on at this tournament.

FIFA says the “unauthorized commercial branding” repeated a previous offense in England’s quarterfinals win against Sweden. That also resulted in a 70,000 Swiss francs ($69,900) fine.

The fines had nothing to do with the holey socks Danny Rose wore in the third-place game against Belgium. ___ 6:05 p.m.

The holes in Danny Rose’s socks generated plenty of online debate during England’s World Cup third-place playoff against Belgium.

FIFA has fined players for wearing socks which didn’t comply with uniform or sponsorship regulations during the tournament, but there doesn’t seem to be any rules against holey socks. Some speculated the holes — which were relatively round and in both socks — were designed to prevent cramps. There’s no scientific evidence for that.

And there was no official explanation before Rose was replaced just at halftime when England was trailing Belgium 1-0. ___ 5: 47 p.m.

Croatia captain Luka Modric believes the toughness of his World Cup squad has some roots in the war that broke up the former Yugoslavia.

On the eve of the soccer World Cup final against France, Modric has been reluctant to go too deeply into answering a question from a reporter who identified himself as a war correspondent from the 1990s, when Croatia became an independent state.

The question was about “how this war forged the spirit of yourself and of the team.”

The 32-year-old Modric was a child when his grandfather was killed and his family forced from its home. He replied by saying “I don’t like to go back to these things. It’s all in the past.”

He adds “Of course, everything influences you. It’s made us resilient as people, as the nation.��

Croatia has spent the maximum amount of time on the field at this World Cup. The team playing extra-time in all three knockout games, and trailed to the first goal scored each time.

Modric has covered more yards than any player at the World Cup, registering 63.03 kilometers (39 miles) in six games, according to FIFA.

Premier League – Manchester City hit six at Watford as Liverpool and Spurs both held at home

Three-goal Sergio Aguero was the star for Manchester City as they embarrassed Watford.

Sergio Aguero completed a hat trick as Manchester City produced a superb away performance to demolish Watford 6-0 at Vicarage Road and go top of the Premier League.

City’s high confidence showed from the off, with Kevin De Bruyne the star of the show as they piled pressure on their previously unbeaten hosts.

The Belgium international played in Aguero, whose chip brushed the roof of the net — and after Watford had come close through Richarlison, his free kick was headed in by Aguero with 27 minutes gone.

City doubled their lead four minutes later when David Silva set up Aguero at the far post, and with half-time still to come they struck again when Aguero turned provider for Gabriel Jesus.

Watford emerged with purpose after the break, Andre Carrillo curling an effort narrowly off target, but City got a fourth when De Bruyne crossed for Nicolas Otamendi to head home and soon made it five when Aguero completed his hat trick.

And with a minute remaining, Raheem Sterling completed the rout from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the area.

An underwhelming Liverpool were held by a sturdy Burnley at Anfield.

Liverpool were left frustrated at Anfield as Burnley held them to a 1-1 draw.

After a subdued start, Liverpool were shocked when the visitors went in front as Robbie Brady headed the ball across from the left and it came to Scott Arfield, who thumped home in the 27th minute.

But the Merseysiders responded within three minutes as Emre Can released Mo Salah, who cut inside to slot home a low finish.

The returning Philippe Coutinho drifted away from a couple of attempted tackles and fired narrowly over as Liverpool began to take control of the game after the break.

Burnley could have snatched it in the closing stages when Ben Mee’s header was scrambled away by the Liverpool defence, but the home side came even closer when visiting keeper Nick Pope made a fine save from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominic Solanke hit the crossbar.

Tottenham had another frustrating performance at Wembley as they were held to a scoreless deadlock by Swansea.

Jamaal Lascelles scored the winner again for Newcastle as they picked up their third win in a row against Stoke.

Newcastle continued their excellent recent run with a 2-1 victory over Stoke at St James’ Park.

Stoke had been the brighter side in the early stages but Newcastle — with Rafa Benitez back in the dugout after illness — took the lead after 19 minutes when Matt Ritchie set up Christian Atsu to score.

The home team dominated from that point but missed chances to increase their advantage, with ex-Stoke player Joselu denied by keeper Jack Butland.

They were made to pay after 57 minutes when Xherdan Shaqiri levelled, sliding home a tidy finish, but regained the lead when Jamaal Lascelles headed home a little over 10 minutes later.

U.S. international DeAndre Yedlin played the full 90 minutes in his first appearance of the season for Newcastle after recovering from a hamstring injury suffered in preseason.

Crystal Palace still haven’t scored this season after their fifth defeat in a row, losing 1-0 to Southampton.

Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of Crystal Palace ended in a 1-0 home defeat as an early Steven Davis strike sealed the points for Southampton and the Londoners made it five Premier League matches without a goal.

Palace made a positive start as the former England manager looked on from the home dugout, with Christian Benteke getting down the left and swinging in a cross that caused problems before being cleared.

But after only six minutes, the struggling Eagles were behind as Davis played in Dusan Tadic down the right and, when his cross was pushed out by Wayne Hennessey, Davis followed up to sidefoot into the corner.

And they were unable to muster a response as they set an unwanted Premier League record for the longest run without a goal at the start of a season.

Jamie Vardy’s penalty rescues a point for Leicester, who were lucky to see a Huddersfield winner ruled out.

Leicester City recovered from a goal down to take a point in a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield Town.

The Terriers began strongly as they looked to make amends for a disappointing defeat at West Ham, and Tom Ince almost found Laurent Depoitre with a cross before sending an effort over the top.

Leicester were struggling to get going but improved as half-time approached, Jamie Vardy turning inside the area but sending his effort past the post.

In a flurry of activity at the start of the second half, the home side took a 47th-minute lead when Laurent Depoitre slid the ball beyond Kasper Schmeichel.

Leicester levelled within three minutes when Andy King was brought down inside the area and Vardy hammered home from the spot, but Huddersfield felt they should have gone back in front when Elias Kachunga headed in, only to be controversially adjudged offside.

Chances were few and far between as West Brom and West Ham finished in a scoreless deadlock at the Hawthorns.

West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United shared the spoils in a largely uneventful 0-0 draw at The Hawthorns.

West Ham’s increased confidence after their first win of the season on Monday showed in a bright start, and they almost took the lead in spectacular style with half an hour on the clock.

Pedro Obiang, around 40 yards out, saw home keeper Ben Foster off his line and his superb effort crashed back off the bar with the keeper beaten, but within moments James Morrison failed to convert a good chance when he completely misconnected with a header.

There was controversy when Javier Hernandez was brought down by Ben Foster, racing out of his area — but the home keeper was shown only a yellow card when the West Ham players felt he should have seen red.
