It's so frustrating to be an artist nowadays. When I post drawing on social media it gets only around 2-5 likes. At first I thought "okay, my skill might be pretty low and my art lacks originality (because I used to copy reference photos and drew fan art), I need to study a little bit more and people will notice me. So I went to college and got an art degree
I thought "traditional art is outdated, it's difficult to photograph, it looks different in social media then in real life and it's harder to create versatile images with traditional instruments". So I bought a tablet and started learning digital drawing. I took a half-year course on 3D and studied digital art for games and character concept art for almost 2 years in online school to broaden the scope of my abilities
My graphic black and white illustrations received little to no likes, so I thought "maybe I need to use more colors" and started painting colorful scenes
I tried to create characters with interesting backstories, I designed every piece of clothing, every prop from scratch, drew a lot of original art. I believed that some day people would finally recognize my talent. But over time, my works became less and less popular. Somehow my skewed old copies from photos got 10 times more engagement then the current posts
I'm honestly so tired at this point. My motivation is at an all-time low. I tried countless different approaches, and nothing works, there's no hope left. During all this time of unsuccessful attempts to show myself to the world, I learned one thing: to become a sought-after artist, you first need to be a good marketer. And the one thing I'm terrible at is marketing and self-promotion
I feel isolated. I don't understand what's wrong with my art. Sometimes, when I finish drawing, I'm so pleased with the result that it feels like it's gonna become a hit. I start imagining tons of likes, reposts, new followers and admiring comments flooding my dms. But then I post it... And nothing happens. Dead silence. I might like it from my other account, my friend might like it out of politeness and that's all
It's especially debilitating, because my job and the whole life revolves around art and seeing that people don't like my drawings hurts my self esteem. I wish I never became an artist. But I also had no choice due to problems with concentration. If I immediately don't understand something, I give up and further attempts to understand the topic feel like literal torture. I wish I was good at math and physics. It seems to me that it would be way easier to be an engineer or something, because in art there's usually no clear definition between right and wrong, unlike in science. In STEM, you can either solve a problem or fail. Drawing "the right way" doesn't necessarily mean that companies would hire you. You need to have soft skills, you have to network, participate in projects, etc. That's like a lottery. You never know what will make people gravitate towards your art and it's pretty confusing

Now Entering a New Era
❝There exists an abandoned post from the beginning of this year – one that lamented on a great deal of things I have experienced in this life, that mourned the way the world once was and acknowledged the robotic wasteland we reluctantly occupy today. It was authentic and raw, but my resilience would hardly let me work on the piece for more than a few moments at a time without returning to the projects I’d promised myself I’d complete before the year is through. And while the aforementioned topics are still worth talking about, I would like to save them for another time and another post and, instead, take a moment to celebrate some of the successes that have come from that resilience. But first, a little history.
Where to begin… I started running my own show quite a long time ago, driven by a passion for creation I’ve had my entire life. During college, while wrestling with a lot of health issues and processing a lot of trauma, I started offering freelance art and design services online. It went as well as it can in a saturated market. To supplement, I found a passion in fragrance – candles, soaps, incense, oils – which overlapped just the right amount with my pre-existing passion for the metaphysical. That went even more well than freelance had, and before I knew it, I was making a little extra from my two favorite hobbies that I could put on top of my income from the job I was working at the time. I had thought about it then, going all-in on it, making it official. But then there was more trauma that seemed to hit back-to-back. A broken heart. Death. Abuse. Abandonment. A stalker. A pandemic. More death. And that’s just scratching the surface, but on top of it all, our entire social sphere shifted. Beauty was scrubbed from existence in favor of profit and function. Algorithms changed in favor of corporations. All that great stuff.
My progress came to a complete halt. My social media and websites stopped receiving traffic. No traffic meant no gigs, no sales. Many of the people I knew had become completely unrecognizable. I fell off the radar. I alienated myself. I found a new job, one I hated that I had hoped would bring me the acceptance from my loved ones that it ultimately did not. Still, I did it – the life thing everyone expects you to do. I worked hard, like I always had, despite what some people in my life may have you think. I have always worked hard at everything in my life, because my life had always been hard. It still often is. I aged prematurely only to find out that adults are a made-up concept that give children a sense of comfort that someone has it figured out when no one really does. I’ve made my mistakes, too, but it’s learning from them that makes you more “adult”, I guess. Not everyone does that.
Then in this robotic cycle of working, cooking, cleaning, existing, as I felt the last of my authenticity slipping away like sand praying for better friction during high tide, I stopped and asked why it had to be the way it is. What happened? Where had everything good gone? More importantly, can we get it back? Truthfully, I still don’t fully know the answer to all of those questions, but I know it starts like everything else does: Slowly, at first (then later, if you’re lucky, all at once). I also know it won’t change at all if we do nothing and keep pretending that this is normal, fulfilling, and how things have always been. A topic for another time.
Anyway, I kept working – because that’s what you do, I’m told – but I also started working on a couple of other things. I started trying to pick myself back up again, trying to be social again, trying to reignite the spark inside me that had gone out. It’s been a lot more work than the proverbial “work” we’re encouraged to do, but this year, after a lot of introspection, something seems to have switched back on within me. I’ve stopped caring as much about what other people think, because I can see what other people’s thoughts have done for the world we live in right now. I’ve started moving things around, taking a lot of risks I otherwise wouldn’t have, and as of now, I am officially the owner of my own business.
And actually, one of things I wanted to ask today was for the help of friends, family, and strangers who would like to help me offset some the start-up costs. Licenses and legal fees, initial inventory and manufacturing needs, marketing and advertisement, packaging and samples, and much more that I’m sure I am not thinking about at the moment. My goal is at least $5,000 to put into my business account to cover anything that isn’t made up in sales and subscriptions by the end of this year. It’s extremely appreciated, but not required, and not really the point of this update. The point is to celebrate where I am today. I’m not where I want to be quite yet, but I’m somewhere meaningful. Just yesterday, I finished a big project for my YouTube channels. I’m in the process of writing three books. I’m working on new artwork for my websites, for prints in my art shop, for an oracle deck I’d like to publish. This year, I learned the basics of Greek and front-end development and WordPress. I learned how to belly dance, how to do splits. I’ve made so many things – art, literature, beautiful but functional designs. I’m learning how to do handstands and accounting and painting with acrylic gouache. I’m still struggling with time management, but I’m getting there. I’m going out more. I’m doing my best to live life at a time when doing so is difficult for just about everyone. And it may not be as exciting as getting accepted into Harvard or as comfortable as a desk job, but it’s fulfilling and it’s fun and it matters because it clears the path for a different direction for the world than the direction it is going right now.
Life is hard. This current cultural climate is harder. I don’t plan to make it more difficult on myself. I plan to change the world for the better – alone, if I have to. I’ve always had unattainable utopian visions for this place. As of now, I’m acting on them. Come my next update post, I’ll have a lot more to share – a new and revised checklist, as well. It was sad to hear that Roo were closing, they had the only decent storage solutions and their nail polish bottle rolls were something that the majority of my clients wanted in their lives.. and not just mine and their fillings every few weeks or so.
I have received four editions of Scratch mag so far, and in the last few weeks about fifteen emails regarding Scratch Stars and their nail competition themes, lovely, but what I also received was an email promoting (insert gel Polish product name here) - a product which towards the end of my old business in 2018 was quickly becoming known amongst pro nail technician’s as something that was causing clients natural nail plate and natural nails to separate away from each other on a rapid scale.
People were mentioning it constantly so I decided to trial this product myself along with another popular gel that was circulating on social media as a gorgeous looking subscription box. The latter did come across as a non pro product, I mean it was sent with little packets of fizzer sweets and pom poms, the owner tried to rip me off photography fees and lied to a magazine about her paid advertisement, but the range meant that a way cheaper alternative could be offered to clients who fancied something from their social media feeds, more affordable, and well really, bin’able, since most colours were in tiny 7ml bottles, and some not always available. Trends are just that, they pass quickly. It was a bit like the Primark of Gel Polish, only really shit with dreadful end results.
Soon after my trial, I experienced exactly what others had been reporting with the nail separation between the nail bed and the natural nail plate on my toes. I was devastated. It took almost a year to recover from it and plenty of sunshine on my feet, even though I newly wanted to keep them covered from the world.
“These products are not professional products, and not supported by the industry as so”. - that is what I thought back then. I had faith that the popularity of these social media trending products would go on to cause so much damage in a short space of time that they would be banned.
Fast forward to 2023, a chance browsing of my old nails account in youtube had the algorithm throw me up a video showing what had been happening to peoples nails, multiple snap shots with damage after using the very same products, going a couple of years back to recently. That’s between 2018, and now, 2023.. and just a small section of people out of all of the potentials in the world.
The problem here is that in the Nail Technicians world, it is similar to other trades - a poor technician might blame her tools, although in this game there is space on the market for poor quality tools today, and there are tools that harm. What is supa bad about this is that clients will be blamed, and nail technicians will be blamed, when the thing that is actually at fault is the dodgy product. The product is not being held accountable for the harm done.
If there is one thing that I enjoyed most about my job it was explaining to clients how I have products in my nail case that were well known, had been fully tested for the market and had transparent MSDS with no unknown or untested ingredients in the mix. I paid premium for training and products, and passed these on to all of the lovely people who booked me. It gave me confidence in my work and that confidence was passed on to my clients, returning to me tenfold on repeat business and word of mouth bookings. It was a beautiful thing.
If today’s nail technician can be promoted towards such a poorly performing product through trusted sources like a professional nails magazine, products that will go on to harm a clients nails, trust in the industry, and potentially leave them for life with a nail allergy (and that bit is both client and tech), then what hope does the industry even have?
For years it has been argued that Nail Technicians in the UK should be regulated. At the moment, the industry has gone down a murky road where, based on their social media clout, the introduction of some fairly nasty products has clouded what was once a fairly easy product arena to manage.
God help everybody’s nails in future, except for me. I got away lightly and will never dip my toe into the dodgy nail gel side of things ever again. I hope that anyone reading this will consider that being a nail technician is one thing, but we should never be supplied products that harm people.

For the elite, keeping up with the Joneses means committing oneself to ever more radical activist agendas. The fading memory of Gender Studies 201 is no longer sufficient in this cutthroat arena. The business executives, lawyers and doctors of America’s SuperZips are compelled to hire DEI consultants to bring them and their employees up to speed on the new revolutionary etiquette. They enroll their children in country day schools that instruct kindergarteners in the fallacy of biological sex, providing them with a head start on the other kids they’d be competing with for a Stanford admissions slot.
This radical grandstanding is a new thing among the educated elite — or perhaps an atavistic thing. But scratch a centimeter deeper and you’ll find the same elite that’s always been there, and this, too, has become a hallmark of today’s political left. The contempt for the masses, with their vaccine hesitancy and their latent fascism. The abiding reverence for credentialed experts. The disdain for political dissent and the pathological need to control the public discourse. It’s all still there, just dressed up in revolutionary drag.
The children of the ruling class have colonized the left, and are using its moral language to malign the broader American public as a bigoted, ignorant, dangerous mob. To protect the “vulnerable” and “marginalized” from this threat, they demand the ideological allegiance of every elite political, cultural, and media institution; the social and professional ostracism of dissidents; and the enforcement of speech codes both online and off. “Social justice” has become both a status signifier for the American establishment and a tool to discipline the rabble.”

Coz like the thing is, we actually don’t mark up our product that much. The profit margin on our cheapest model is like $400, and even on the most expensive model it’s only a couple grand. And I get paid like $35 bucks an hour for tech/escalations support, right? So if you’re going to be that entitled customer who is gonna demand hours of my time trying to teach you 3D design from scratch and shit to try or give you gift cards and loads of emotional labor to make up for your imagined slights, it’s *genuinely cheaper* for the company to just break up with you early.
Like, I had this customer the other day, they dropped like two grand for our cheapest model and expect gold star service. Oh and they didn’t even buy it from US they bought it from like a Best Buy but the warranty is through us as the manufacturer so I still have to deal with them, cause as it happens one part of their system arrived broken, right? Okay, no big, right? We order them a new one and they Karen at the frontline tech who had the misfortune of dealing with them enough that he decides to give them an exception and ship it in advance instead of waiting for them to ship back the broken part first.
(This isn’t a huge deal, we just have to put a hold on their credit card and then manually release the replacement order rather than tying it to the returning order but it takes more staff time so we’re not supposed to do it very often)
Anyway, they apparently get the idea that this exception means they’re gonna get the replacement like, the next day.
(Which, I have this whole other rant about how Amazon is screwing things over for other companies by using the incredibly abusive labor practices that they do, because customers now expect that they’re gonna get things tout de suite and it shouldn’t cost them anything but even Amazon bleeds money on shipping, it’s just that the monopoly it gives them makes up for it. But no other company can do that without hemorrhaging money cause we have to pay fulfillment center and shipping companies that aren’t literally killing their employees. And people who run small business, like most of our customers, don’t understand that when they’re paying us for shipping, they’re paying for the warehouse staff we contract with to get the right thing off the shelf and pack it and put the right label on it, not just whatever FedEx or UPS are charging for shipping, because they don’t consider that labor when they doing their own budgeting).
But ANYWAY so they call in like 19 times (not exaggerating even a little) in the two days after this all goes down, wanting the tracking number for their part. And it turns out that whoops! the tech who diagnosed the problem made the exception to ship in advance but the service rep who processed the order was kinda operating on autopilot and forgot to manually release it.
At which point they go absolutely apeshit and the whole thing becomes my problem.
And they’re just Karening and Karening in my ear about how they’ve had to spend so much of their time working to fix this, and they made commitments to their customers based on the tech rep telling them it would definitely ship the next day (he didn’t, and I listened to their entire 40-minute call to prove it) and are now out thousands of dollars (why the hell would you commit to making “thousands of dollars” of product with a machine you JUST bought, that you only spent two grand on? This is our lowest model, we don’t even market it as a business tool! Sorry dude, your bad business plan is not my problem) and I have to “prove” to them that we’re going to stand by our product or they won’t further invest in our company, and oh by the way, they have friends who have millions of followers on social media, and I should know what that means, so I better really try hard to win back their trust…
And I’m just like….
Please, dude. Please go fuck yourself and never spend another dime with our company. You’ve *already* blown through our entire profit margin on the machine you bought by sucking up so many hours of staff time. You are literally more trouble than you’re worth. PLEASE just go away so I never have to hear from you again.
"i won't be coming back here" is the funniest possible thing you can say to a customer service worker. you're at your place of work and someone comes in, acts like a jerk, ruins your day, and then, paradoxically, finishes up by reassuring you that this interaction is now over and you'll never have to see or hear from them again
