Harry has thought of seeing you again so many times in the past months, he imagined this moment when he lied in bed, counting the days until he meets you again after all this time, but seeing you in real life is nothing like his daydreams. 

You’ve changed so much, yet he can see the version of you he last saw clearly too. Your facial features have matured, your hair is longer than he was expecting, though he only saw pictures of you from the past years. You have a black wrap-around dress on that’s hugging your curves that look absolutely delicious. 

It’s pretty obvious you’ve put on some weight and judging from the way you nervously keep fixing your dress every other second, it’s something you feel insecure about, but Harry cannot take his eyes off you and he forces himself to tame his already wandering thoughts. 

“Dude, close your mouth!” Beckham walks up to Harry, patting his shoulder to snap him out of his trance. 

“Shut up,” he mumbles under his breath, averting his eyes from you, but it only takes a few seconds before his gaze returns.

“Go say hi,” Beckham encourages him, but he shakes his head no.

“Later. I don’t… I don’t think I’m the person she wants to see the most.”

Beckham laughs as he walks away with his beer while Harry returns to his seat that’s not as close to yours as he would want it to be, but at least you’re on opposite sides, so he can keep an eye on you as the dinner finally starts. He can faintly hear your voice over the chatter every time you speak up or laugh at something and he wishes he was part of the conversation as well, sitting next to you instead of sneakily stealing glances.

Sometime after the main course and before the dessert it’s suggested that everyone say a short little summary of what happened to them in the past decade, and the round starts, everyone curiously listening to what their old pals are saying. 

“Um, hi,” Harry chuckles awkwardly when it’s his turn. “Well, I’ve had a pretty busy couple of years,” he grins, making everyone laugh. “I don’t know what I can say that you can’t read online, but let’s pretend you know nothing. So I just published my third solo album not long ago, I’ve been really enjoying experimenting with music on my own, though I loved my time in the band as well. I’m working on new stuff lately and I still have part of the tour coming up. I’m doing good, it’s all good,” he nods to himself before smiling around and giving the word to the next person. 

While he is interested in what everyone has to say, he is mostly looking forward to your turn finally so he can shamelessly stare at you while you talk.

“Hi everyone,” you smile nervously around, squaring your shoulders as attention turns to you. “Um, I don’t really know where to start. I started marketing at college, but I didn’t really like it and I was learning coding at the time so I thought I would start a career in that field. I went to an intense training so now I mostly make websites, but I do other stuff too. Um… I live here in London as most of us do now,” she chuckles, the class sharing her smile. “Nothing… Nothing else to share, really,” she adds in a mumble and looks to her right, signaling that she is done talking, it’s time for the next person.

It wasn’t enough. Harry wants to know more, everything if that’s possible and if it wasn’t for all the people around him, he would stand up and just sit beside you, asking you dozens of questions.

But he has to sit and wait patiently, pretend like you’re not the only one he is interested in the bunch. 

An entire hour passes by before he sees you slip away from the table and out to the back patio. Part of him tells him he shouldn’t follow you, but he just can’t stop himself. He excuses himself from the conversation and heads after you, hoping no one will notice him missing inside.

In the summer time there are tables outside as well with fairy lights creating a cozy mood, but it’s too cold right now to sit outside, so it’s only used by smokers occasionally. When Harry steps out as he slips into his coat he spots you right away in the corner, scrolling on your phone as you’re probably having a break. Even when you were younger, you often told him your social batteries easily run out and those were the times Harry gladly sat outside with you until you felt comfortable enough to go back inside. Seems like not much has changed. 

“Hey,” he breathes out and watches your eyes widen when you realize he came after you.

“H-Hi!” you clear your throat, slipping your phone back into your pocket.

“Having a social break?” he smiles warmly, standing only a few feet away from you.

“Yeah,” you chuckle.

There’s a bit of a pause where you’re not too sure how to act with Harry right next to you and he is stunned as well. There’s so much he wants to say and do, but he doesn’t know how you’d react. He doesn’t know about a lot of things when it comes to you but he is determined to change that. 

“So… how have you been?” he asks at last, the ure to speak up taking over the silence.

“Um, I’m fine. Fine, yeah,” you nod. 

“Do you still work at that civil organization, or…?”

“You know I worked there?” you ask, the surprise is pretty apparent on your face. 

“Of course,” he smiles softly, a blush tinting his cheeks. 

“Uh, I’m not there anymore. I work for a bigger company.”

“But still in marketing?”

“Yes,” you nod. “I can do more designing here on the side, that’s why I switched.”

“You like it?”

“It’s good. But work is work, you know, I was never the kind to be obsessed with my job.”

As you say that you realize he can’t know that, because you weren’t talking by the time you started working. It brings the awkwardness right back and he knows he needs to address some things before moving on.

“Y/N, I hope you know I didn’t… I didn’t want us to eventually stop talking. It’s just that so much happened, all at once and I didn’t take all of it the best way either. I should have focused more on my oldest friendships. I’m sorry, that’s what I’m trying to say.”

“It’s fine,” you shake your head with a weak smile. “People have fallouts all the time, it’s natural.”

But it wasn’t supposed to happen to us, Harry wants to say, but he bites his tongue. He shouldn’t bring everything up the first time you see each other.

“But we could start again,” he suggests, holding his breath as he watches your reaction to his words.

“Start again?”

“Yeah. I would… love to catch up with you, hear about everything I missed. Only if you want to tell me about it, of course.”

You stare back at him for way longer than he would have loved it and it convinces him it’s the part where you tell him to fuck off. He wouldn’t be surprised, you haven’t talked in ages and now he is so desperate to reconnect. You have every right not to want him back in your life even if you never had a fight that resulted in the fallout.

He is about to take back what he said, but you finally speak up.

“Okay,” is all you say with a tiny nod. 

He’s shocked, to say the least, even though he was hoping you’d say that. But seeing that small smile on your face is all he needs right now.

“Cool,” he breathes out. The door behind him opens and another guest walks out to have a smoke, making them realize they should probably return to the table. “Look, if you’re free sometime soon, I’m staying until the end of the month. We could have lunch, dinner or even breakfast,” he chuckles. “I would love to see you again and talk. Just the two of us.”

“Alright, I’m in.”

“Cool! Great!” he enthuses, probably more excited than he should be, but it doesn’t matter.

The two of you return to the table soon, no one really noticed that you slipped away, but it leaves Harry with a silly smile on his face that widens every time he looks at you again. Suddenly, he feels like a teenager all over again, he is in that basement with his best mates, just having fun, looking forward to spending some time alone with you.

Your bike rides home together were always his favorites, even the ones when you didn’t exchange a single word. He just loved seeing you by his side, the way you always squinted your eyes when the wind blew harder than usual, how you always checked back at him if he was behind you whenever you were about to cross a road. These are all tiny things that are etched into his memories probably forever.

Sometime towards the end of the evening Bee gathers your little group and asks to talk to you outside. You stand in a circle, everyone eyeing her suspiciously as she tries to hold her smile back, Lucas standing right behind her.

“So, there is something that we would like to share with you guys,” Bee starts and without any time to waste, she pulls out a ring from her pocket and slips it on her finger, holding it up, her grins stretching from ear to ear.

“Oh my God!” Chloe gasps as she realizes what it means. “Congratulations!”

It’s a shock, but not really. Bee and Lucas became an official item sometime before graduation, had a short break during college since Lucas studied abroad and long distance took a toll on them, but they found their way back not long after. Engagement was definitely the next step after they moved together three years ago and adopted a dog just last year.

But still, it’s shocking for Harry to see his old pals move on in life together. There’s a pang of jealousy in him too, but it’s overruled by the happiness.

There’s a round of hugs and congratulations before Bee reaches for her purse and pulls out a stack of envelopes.

“We want to invite you all to the wedding that’s gonna be held in June. You guys have been here from the start and it only feels right if you’re there with us on our big day.”

“Man, I might even start crying!” Joshua jokes, but Harry can see the shimmer in his eyes as he takes his invitation.

“Don’t get too mushy,” Lucas chuckles, patting his shoulder. 

Chloe is already talking Bee’s ears off about the wedding and offers to help with basically anything, while you’re examining the invitation card with a soft smile on your lips.

Harry’s excitement runs even higher when he realizes it’s gonna be another occasion where he’ll see you, though he plans to meet a few more times until June.

The night stretches long, it’s way past midnight when the last guests get ready to leave. Harry has been keeping an eye on you all evening in case you wanted to slip out, but you stayed until the end and he doesn’t hesitate to take this opportunity.

“Do you have a ride home?” he asks, when you’re putting your coat on.

“Um, I’ll just call an Uber or something.”

“We can share, I already called one.”

“Oh, okay, thanks.”

In front of the building everyone says their goodbye, heading their own way and you are left alone with Harry on the curb as the car pulls up.

“So when will you be free for that breakfast slash lunch slash dinner?” he asks, not wanting to miss the chance to see you again.

“I have to check my work schedule, but… I’ll text you, okay?” “Promise?” he arches his eyebrows.

“I promise.”

“Okay. Just so you know, if you ghost me I will come for you.”

“So you’re that desperate?” you chuckle and he just shrugs with a smirk.

“I’m just eager to start over and reconnect with you.”

“I’ll text you, don’t worry. My days are just… a bit hectic lately.”

He wants to ask you about it, would be even better if you just opened up about whatever it is that’s happening in your life, but he’s fine with what he got as well. He doesn’t want to be greedy. 

You make some small talk on the way to your place and when the car comes to a stop Harry is already looking forward to seeing you again. 

“Don’t forget about texting me!” he reminds you again, to which you exhale sharply.

“I actually keep my promises, Harry. Goodnight,” you say before hopping out of the car, leaving him too stunned to speak and the car drives away before he could even react. 

It was like a stab in his chest, your words ring in his head all the way until he arrives home and even after that. 

He pushed too hard. He wanted too much. His nagging was supposed to be just a joke, but apparently, he should have been more careful, because your reaction was sharp and painful. But he deserved it, he knows, because what you said… that was a reminder that he fucked up and he can’t just start all over again so quick and easily.

He wants to go back in time and take the words back, everything was going so well up until that point and now it feels like a setback. While in the shower he is composing a text to apologize for overstepping your boundaries and he is just about to type it out when his phone rings, your name on display. 

“Hi!” he answers, shocked to receive a call from you but also thankful that he can apologize.

“Hey.” Your voice is weak, but a lot lighter than it was in the car when you parted ways. “I’m sorry, Harry.”

“No, no, no, you have nothing to be sorry for,” he shakes his head, sitting on the edge of the bed and he wishes he could talk to you in person, see your face.

“It was rude. You’ve been so nice all evening, even asking to reconnect and I was… I was an asshole,” you sigh and he can imagine you closing your eyes and pinching the bridge of your nose.

“I kinda deserved it. It’s been long, Y/N, I shouldn’t have expected to just go back to being best friends. I pushed too hard, so if anyone has to be sorry, it should be me.”

There’s a long pause at your end of the call, Harry is dreading to hear your voice and make sure he didn’t fucked up royally.

“I’ve been kind of… moody lately. I should think about my words before talking.”

“Do you… want to talk about it?” he asks, but then realizes that it might be over the line too. “Only if you want to, you don’t have to share anything with me, I totally understand it.”

“Maybe some other time,” you quietly answer and Harry swallows down his greed to know more. “But… I’m free on Friday,” you add and his heart skips a beat.

“Friday is awesome!” he answers without even thinking through his schedule. If he has anything that day, he’ll surely cancel, nothing can be more important than meeting you again. “We could go out for dinner?”

“Can we… Is it possible not to go out?”

“Yeah,” he nods, though his chest tightens. Does this mean you don’t want to be seen out with him? He wouldn’t blame you, it would put you in the spotlight instantly. “Want to come over? I could cook something.”

“That sounds good. See you on Friday, Harry.”

“Good night, Y/N,” he manages to say before the call ends.

A week has never felt longer. Every waking moment was spent by counting the days until Harry could finally see you again. He planned out the whole evening the day after the reunion, from the meal to the outfit he would wear, he knew it all by Monday rolled around so he had to spend five days anxiously waiting for Friday. 

On Wednesday he has a few drinks with just the boys, Joshua, Beckham and Lucas, cheering on Lucas’ engagement and having some boytalk. Even though they kept in touch throughout the years, there’s still a lot to share. They are having a great time, lots of laughs and jokes are shared over their beer.

“Alright, I want to talk about something major,” Joshua smirks over his pint, his eyes finding Harry and he already knows it’s gonna be about you.

“Just ask it,” Harry chuckles.

“Can we talk about how you had the heart eyes for Y/N all evening at the reunion?”

“Like a lovesick puppy!” Beckham laughs, patting Harry on the back as he puts up with the teasing.

“It was nice seeing her again, what can I say?” Harry shrugs, but he can’t hold his smirk up, which earns another round of laughter from his friends.

“Oh, it was more than just nice, right?” Lucas grins with a knowing smirk.

“We shouldn’t be surprised though, you were so in love with her back then,” Beck scoffs as he leans back in his seat, folding his arms over his chest.

“Not in love, I was just…” Harry tries to explain himself, but fails.

“Just in love,” Lucas teases him.

“I might have had a crush on her, I admit. But it’s been a long time, we obviously changed a lot. It was great to reunite with her.”

“And you plan to reunite some more with her soon?” Joshua wiggles his eyebrows. 

“We’re actually meeting on Friday.”

“You little minx!” Beckham laughs. “Will you shoot your shot?”

“We literally just met again after almost a decade. There’s no shot to shoot.”

“Yeah, and maybe it’s better if you’re careful,” Lucas nods, but Harry doesn’t really understand what he meant by that.

“Careful?”

“Yeah, I mean, after what she went through…”

“What do you mean?”

“Oh, you don’t know?” Joshua asks, his gaze flickering between Harry and Lucas.

“What? Tell me what it is!”

“She got a divorce not long ago. Like, about a year ago,” Lucas says, keeping his voice down. 

“Huh? I didn’t even know she was married!”

It feels like a punch in the stomach, how he missed such a major event in your life. Not getting an invitation is one thing, but how did you manage to keep it so secret that he didn’t even know you were engaged?

“She kept it pretty low,” Beckham says. “I mean, the divorce and also the whole relationship.”

“Yeah, I didn’t even know about them until she was engaged,” Joshua shakes his head. 

“And what happened? Why did it end?”

Beckham and Joshua shrug their shoulders, but Lucas seems like he knows something. 

“Lucas? If Bee told you something…”

“I don’t know the whole story, okay? But as far as I know… he cheated on her.”

“Oh fuck,” Harry breathes out, his heart sinking instantly. 

“Pretty rough, yeah. But maybe don’t bring it up until she is ready to share it with you.”

“Yeah, sure,” he nods. 

The night carries on and they talk about anything and everything, but Harry’s mind stays stuck on you. To be more precise, your divorce he knew nothing about. It’s no surprise you are so reserved and moody, it must have been hard for you to go through it. He can only hope you had friends to rely on, Chloe or Bee at last if he wasn’t there for you.

Another thing to add to the list of things he should feel horrible about when it comes to you. 

At the end of the night he offers to share a ride with any of the boys and Beckham accepts, so they leave together. 

“I know it’s eating you away,” Beckham speaks up in the car. 

“Huh?”

“That you didn’t know about her divorce.”

“I wasn’t there for her, Beck. I should have been, but I didn’t even know she was engaged!”

“You weren’t talking, you couldn’t have known.”

“Yeah, but it was my fault we weren’t talking. I should have tried harder and… I should have kept my promise I made to her.”

Silence falls over the car as the passing lights illuminate their faces. Beckham is looking at Harry while Harry is staring straight ahead, his jaw jumping. 

“Look, you’ve made mistakes, it’s fine, totally human. If she is willing to meet you again, I’m sure she is not that mad at you, so it’s a good sign. You… Do you… want to, like… date her?”

Mixed One-shots: Romeo Beckham, Hayes Grier & "The Grey Speedo Boy"

I write mostly k-pop smut on this blog, but in my series Mixed One-shots I also do non-kpop celebrities.

Among my current drafts, three stories are closer to completion than any others. Below you can vote on which I should publish first.

Who are they?

None of these three guys are super famous, and especially if you're mostly into k-pop boy bands you might not even know who they are. So let me introduce you to them 😊

Romeo Beckham

The middle son of David Beckham (the famous footballer) and Victoria Beckham (one of the Spice Girls). He's basically been famous all his life for being the child of a celebrity couple, but in recent years he's made a name for himself as a professional footballer who follows in his father's footsteps, and as the long-term boyfriend of model Mia Regan (though they apparently broke up in February).

Hayes Grier

The younger brother of Nash Grier who was part of the YouTube group Magcon some years ago. Magcon consisted of members like Matthew Espinosa, Carter Reynolds, Jack & Jack (the singers), Taylor Caniff (who has since moved on to OnlyFans), Nash & Hayes Grier, and – most famously – Shawn Mendes (yes, the Shawn Mendes). Hayes did a brief time on OnlyFans last year but is otherwise not active in the public eye.

The Grey Speedo Boy

Here's an odd one for you: Pedro de la Fuente is the name of a guy from Mexico who got super famous globally when he was an exchange student in the US. Years ago, pictures of "the grey speedo boy" spread like wildfire online due to his good looks. I would wager that he's the most famous person on this list, yet hardly anyone knows his name. And yes, as strange as it may be, I've now written a smut story about him.

So, who of these three do you want me to prioritize and publish a story about in June?

Why would Taennie be mediaplay or pr?? Taehyung is part of the most popular group in the world, and he's arguably the most popular member, why would he do pr? There's nothing for him to gain from it. And why now?? The taennie rumors have been circulating since late 2021 when he followed then unfollowed her on Instagram, and he was quick to take it to weverse and say it was an accident. Then the Jeju island pics came months later in May. Then the gurumi pics came around August last year. Then the Paris pics last month. And none of these things were confirmed nor denied. Taehyung usually denies dating rumors that involve him himself, so obviously this one is real and his privacy has been breached, so he can't lie and say it isn't real, but he doesn't owe us a confirmation either. It's his personal life.

I don’t think you are fully understanding the meaning and workings of pr. Every (!) celeb does pr. The ways in which they do this may differ hugely, but pr is necessary to reach the top and it is necessary to stay on top. BTS has always done pr. BlackPink has always done pr.

Let’s take this out of the realm of Kpop for a minute (a little distance to see things clearly). A quick search online gave me these articles. All of these are pr.

David Beckham wants to stay in the eye of the public, so he gets papped every now and then. The British royal family has enough problems for a lifetime, so they try and avert attention. Taylor Swift means what she says, but it’s also good for her image. And Kim Kardashian’s whole life is basically pr. No matter how famous you are… there’s always going to be goals to reach, scandals to bury, or just trying to keep on top. Paps don’t go looking for celebs as they used to. Celebs have become pro-active, so they can keep control of what’s being written about them. Linking this article again:

You might think Tae and Jennie don’t need the promo, I can guarantee that their companies think differently. Tae is entering a new era. Going solo is very different from being a part of BTS.. and he possibly has something to hide (ofcourse he has!!). Jennie possibly wants to act more. She has much stuff to promote (pr) and has already gained a lot of promo for her new series on HBO. Pr is part of a celeb’s life.. whether they like it or not.

Now what you possibly mean is that Tae doesn’t need to have a fake relationship. In a perfect world, no he wouldn’t… but this world isn’t perfect and queer people sadly enough have to hide. If he chooses to combine that with a strong dose of pr.. then he certainly wouldn’t be the first one.

Ofcourse he won’t deny or confirm.. this works way better.

Should I PlagueWatch It?: Series Finale!

In March 2020, I inaugurated on this blog what I said "may but hopefully won't(?) become an ongoing series": Should I PlagueWatch It? Basically, it took the thing Jill and I do best -- watch TV -- and offered our recommendations for what you should watch to get you through the pandemic.

Over a year later, Should I PlagueWatch It? did, indeed, become a series. In addition to the first entry -- HBO's Avenue 5 -- I also did entries on Gentleman Jack, Marvel's Runaways, Alpha House, Never Have I Ever, Jelle's Marble Runs, Making the Cut, and a "roundup" post that covered Billions, Insecure, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Ultimate Tag, Titan Games, and Holey Moley.

But now, it feels we're finally closing the chapter on the pandemic. Jill and I are vaccinated, my parents came to visit this past weekend, we're seeing friends, the CDC says we can go unmasked. It seems, alas, that all good things must come to an end. And while the pandemic itself is certainly not a good thing, some of us may be feeling a bit bittersweet at the prospect of being expected to interact with other humans rather than sit around and watch Netflix all day.

So to wrap up the series, one more omnibus "quick hits" review of all the shows we PlagueWatched that haven't yet gotten their own entry.

Blown Away

Reality TV can be wonderful in its formulaicness. Take a random hobby, find ten people who are pretty good at it, dangle $50,000 in front of them, and bang, you've got a competition show. This one's about glass blowing. I know nothing about glass blowing, but the competitors seem pretty talented to me?

I was impressed at how versatile a medium glass is. I worried when I started the show that the challenges would end up being pretty one note (how many vases can one make?). But the competitors actually made a lot of really cool material!

There's a lot of running and swinging and flailing given that they're handling molten-hot material.  It stressed me out. Also, apparently "glory holes" are an essential part of glass blowing, and nobody made a joke about it.

This show is definitely more in the "everyone likes and supports one another" mold of reality TV compared to the "constant cat fights and 'I'm not here to make friends'" mold. No judgment, just letting you know what to expect.

Sexify

A Netflix series about a young college student with no sexual experience who decides she needs to develop an app to optimize the female orgasm. It's not the most innovative concept, but it works well enough.

Of the core trio, my favorite character is Paulina -- the religious Catholic best-friend who is having (bad) sex with her fiancé and feels guilty about even that sin. She does a lot of great expressive work and has some superb character beats (her popcorn addiction -- just casually munching away while watching porn). 

Speaking of Paulina, at the outset I told Jill she looked like someone and Jill's first guess was "a plainer Emily Blunt" (that's not an insult -- who isn't plainer than Emily Blunt?). It wasn't who I was thinking of, and soon I realized the answer was like six women I've known over the years. So maybe "plainer Emily Blunt" is a more common face than I realized?

The show is in Polish (with subtitles), and I'm very proud that I managed to identify the language as Polish right away (I do not speak a word of Polish).

The musical motif for the show combines one of the catchiest guitar riffs I've ever heard with a sample loop of a woman's sex moans. It fits the show perfectly, but it's a bit awkward to listen to on its own.

Wandavision

You shouldn't need me to tell you about this show. It's good, but my hottest take -- and I stand by it -- is that as an exploration of grief Never Have I Ever does it better and it's not close.

Can we concede that Wanda is the unambiguous villain of the show? With only the barest shift in perspective, Wanda could be the nemesis with an admittedly sympathetic motive. To some extent, I think the show was far too forgiving of her. Motives aside, how different is she from Kilgrave on Jessica Jones?

Poor Emma Caulfield. So much build-up for her character, and it's only a head-fake.

Space Force

I liked it. It's not in the most elite of the elite comedies, and maybe that's the standard when Steve Carrell is the lead, but it was quite funny. That said, I keep on almost forgetting that I watched it, and have no substantive commentary to offer. So take from that what you will.

AOC lookalike alert (the character even gets the nickname AYC -- "Angry Young Congresswoman")!

Mythic Quest

I love that Ubisoft is actually involved in the show (which is set at a game studio producing a popular massively multiplayer online RPG).

Surprisingly, given my love affair with Community, Danny Pudi is one of the least interesting characters on the show.

The actress who plays Poppy isn't the very strongest (though she's improving), but Poppy herself may be my favorite character. Of course, everyone knows I'm a sucker for an Australian accent.

The show has some great characters in side parts who don't get enough attention, like Sue the community manager and Carol the HR director. Also, Aparna Nancherla has a small recurring role in the first season and apparently doesn't come back for season two? I don't get why she keeps getting sidelined like this -- she's funnier than the rest of the cast put together.

Ted Lasso

Good, sweet, endearing, fun. British soccer comedies with heart are a winner for me (Bend It Like Beckham, anyone?).

Ted's estranged wife is played by the same actress who plays Linda in Better Off Ted. This was very strange, though admittedly I'm probably the only person who cared enough about Better Off Ted to notice or care.

Lupin

Dashing gentleman thief who's always a step ahead of his adversaries, except maybe the one nemesis who actually can match him step for step in a constant cat-and-mouse game? Look, it's a cliché for a reason. I'm not going to say Lupin breaks the mold, but it certainly is a well-crafted entry into the mold.

If there is anything innovative, it's how Lupin particularly leverages stereotypes about race and class to maneuver more freely in certain spaces (e.g., he can smuggle himself into prison because the guards can't tell him apart from another inmate -- sad commentary, but useful for Lupin!).

It did do something I hate, which is release "half a season" and just leave the audience hanging at the end. Maybe it was the pandemic's fault, but one could really feel its incompleteness.

Kim's Convenience

Of the Canadian shows I've been watching, I'd say Working Moms (not in this post because it is pre-pandemic) is the stronger of the two. But this is fun as well.

It just got cancelled, unfortunately depriving it of the chance to wrap up its single greatest storyline (that's been ongoing since season one). That's a real, real shame.

Simu Liu as Jung is the latest iteration of the Jason Mendoza trend of "dumb male Asian hottie leads". I guess it's a blow against stereotypes?

Pastor Nina also could be an AOC lookalike. I think the show struggled a bit to draw a bead on her character.

Legomasters

I actually mentioned this show in my post about Jelle's Marble Runs, but it is such a joy to watch. I can't wait for season two, which is dropping very soon. For pure, simple, uncomplicated happiness, Legomasters beats out everything on this list.

So, they flogged home movies for £16mill. Prince Harry In Talks For Guest Appearance On Goldman Sachs Show: Report

Goldman Sachs is in discussions to feature Prince Harry as a guest speaker for its online interview series “Talks at GS”, CNBC reported here on Wednesday, citing a source familiar with the matter. He will likely want to speak about two issues of personal interest: mental health and the needs of military veterans, the report added. The “Talks at GS” events are a series of interviews Goldman hosts regularly which feature prominent personalities from business and other walks of life. Previous guests include Walt Disney Co Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger, football star David Beckham and writer Malcolm Gladwell. The events aren’t a paid appearance, the report added. Goldman Sachs and Prince Harry’s spokesperson declined to comment. Last month, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced their decision to step back from their royal duties and seek financial independence, which includes giving up state funding. (x)

Controversial Ads – A publicity stunt?

                   ‘Controversy is the part of nature of art and creativity’

With so much competition for attention today, controversial ads are becoming more common. Brands have to be bold to be heard – and sometimes they cross the line with outrageous work. Some agencies have even gone so far to create work they know will get banned to gain maximum publicity with minimum marketing spend. Others have absolutely no idea the impact their work will have when it plays in the wider world.

While fortune can favor the brave, the ad industry is littered with examples of bold ads that have backfired. 

Dove is a popular skincare brand that targets numerous countries around the world with their moisturizers, deodorants and hair care products. In 2017, Dove released a social media ad on their Facebook page of a black woman “transforming” into a white woman. The advertisement showed a black woman removing her top to reveal a white woman underneath after using Dove’s body lotion. 

This advert shows that if a dark skinned person uses dove products, the person’s skin tone becomes light several tones. The American advertising campaign shows a series of photographs in which a black woman pulls off her T-shirt to reveal a white woman underneath. Another image shows the white woman undressing to reveal an Asian woman. This advert caused a big controversy which upset the dark-skinned women. This could have possibly reduced the sales of Dove in Southeast Asia and places like Africa. 

The company eventually apologized publicly and took down the advertisement. 

The name 'Dove' in itself is quite racist as doves are white colored birds, implying that using these products make you fairer.  

In the first week of January 2018, H&M UK created a worldwide controversy by advertising a green hoodie with the slogan “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” in its online store featured by a black boy model while a white child model was presenting an orange sweatshirt saying “Mangrove Jungle – Official Survival Expert”. Immediately, the company was faced with an outcry on social media from celebrities, journalists, advocates for social justice and consumers, most of them widely criticizing the advertisement as being racist, offensive, derogatory and negligent. Furthermore, the company was criticized for showing a serious lack of social awareness and racial sensitivity 

Comparing Black people to a ‘monkey’ implies a racist undertone because of its historical use for demeaning and dehumanizing people of African descent.

Beach body ad campaign by health supplement supplier Protein World. Released in 2015 across London and New York billboards, the ads pictured a bikini-clad girl with the slogan “Are you beach body ready?”. The idea was to promote their supplements to users who wanted the perfect beach body for summer. However, the ad quickly received plenty of backlash via social media and even resulted in many passersby vandalizing and writing over the ad. The problem with this ad campaign was the fact that it promoted “body shaming”. Many feminist groups noted that the wording of the ad insinuates that the body in the picture is the only “acceptable” beach body. This means that any other body type not like the one in the picture is “unready”.

Pepsi is known for their high budget ads which usually feature famous faces such as Lionel Messi, Michael Jackson, and Beckham to name a few. This ad was no different and featured celebrity fashion icon, Kendall Jenner. Released in 2017, the ad shows Kendall joining a protest outside after removing her black wig and makeup. She then proceeds to give a can of Pepsi to a police officer during a stand-off who then smiles and the crowd cheers. During the time the advertisements was released, there were many protests and riots taking place in America over the #BlackLivesMatter campaign. The ad took a lot of “inspiration” from these protests and fundamentally undermined the whole point of the protests. In addition to this, the ad also received a lot of criticism for how Pepsi was responsible for “saving the day”. 

I think these ads are to gain publicity more than anything. It may just be a coincidence, but these companies are targeting controversial issues to promote their product.

Her wedding in the chapel of Windsor Castle just over a year ago was a roll call of royalty mixed with the choicest sprinkling of celebrity friends.

TV host Oprah Winfrey, Hollywood actor George Clooneyand his glamorous barrister wife Amal, Wimbledon champion Serena Williams, and David and Victoria Beckham were just some of the A-listers who witnessed the marriage of Prince Harry to former actress Meghan Markle.

It was a fitting, if somewhat untraditional, congregation considering the Duchess's acting past.

But spool back a little further, to the days when she was just another rising American starlet, and Meghan can be found fishing in the shallower end of the showbiz pond.

Indeed, not long before she was introduced to her Prince, you could find her cosying up to a male model on the red carpet, flirting on social media with a former X Factor winner and deliberating whether to go on a date with footballer Ashley Cole.

Of course, hanging out with D-listers was never really going to be the right fit for ambitious and sophisticated Meghan Markle.

But her determination to climb the celebrity ladder — and to jettison anyone who did not fit into the parameters of her new persona — provides a fascinating insight into Meghan's mindset.

This week, it was revealed that, a few months before she found her Prince, the Duchess of Sussex had flirted on social media with X Factor winner Matt Cardle.

Meghan complimented the singer, now 36, as he prepared to hit the West End in 2015.

Cardle, who had won the talent show five years earlier, knew of Meghan from her role in the hit U.S. TV series Suits, and was said to be 'stunned' when she started sending him messages. She said that she was a 'big fan of his work'.

'Matt couldn't believe a star like Meghan would even know who he was, so he was very flattered and they chatted a little bit online before she suggested meeting up,' a source said.

'But then he met his girlfriend and knew it wasn't appropriate to keep talking to Meghan, so he ended up ghosting her.

'It felt like there could have been a connection, but the timing was wrong. He didn't reply to her last message.'

So what is the story of Meghan's life before she met Harry?

I can reveal that Meghan spoke of plans to quit Suits and start a new life in London, hoping to find an upper-crust boyfriend from the Made In Chelsea set and possibly even become a fixture on the show.

Television presenter Lizzie Cundy, who was friends with her at the time, said: 'She told me she wanted to be on an English reality TV show and that she wanted an English boyfriend.

'She set her sights on Made In Chelsea and worked hard to get in with that crowd. She said that she could only be in Suits for so long and that Hollywood was a really brutal place. She had not made a breakthrough, and said she would feel at home in London.'

Meghan made two visits to London — in 2013 and 2016 — and both appear to have been networking exercises.

By the time of her first trip, she had two advisers helping her with what she called 'hustle' — turning her little bit of fame into a little bit more.

One of them was Neil Ransome of the talent agency Insanity Group. He got in touch with people in the media, including journalist Katie Hind, at that time working for the Sunday People newspaper, and said that he was desperate to get some publicity for Meghan.

I'm told Ransome was all but begging journalists to come out to meet Meghan, who was pretty much completely unknown and newly divorced from husband Trevor Engelson.

Ransome, who declined to comment on his very famous former client this week, now has an eclectic range of clients, from model Alexa Chung and singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor to a Tattoo Fixer, from the TV show on E4, and a man who pimps out sports cars for a series on the satellite channel Dave.

The best known of his current clients are radio hosts Vick Hope and Roman Kemp, who present the Capital Breakfast Show in London. He also has The Only Way Is Essex's Lydia Bright and former rugby player Thom Evans on his books.

Meghan was fortunate also to work with PR man Nick Ede, and his influence can be clearly seen in what happened next.

Nick, a flamboyant and popular figure on the showbiz circuit, is best pals with Maria Bravo, an actress who founded the Global Gift Foundation.

The non-profit organisation hosts events at selected spots around the world each year, including a celebrity-heavy gala.

Guests include the likes of Victoria Beckham, singer Nicole Scherzinger and the charity's ambassador, actress Eva Longoria. Celebrities are honoured for their philanthropy, and there is an auction to raise money for global charities.

Ede proposed the almost unknown Meghan be the co-host of the London gala in November 2013. He has since said he has 'worked with' Meghan and describes her as 'too good' for the Royal Family.

He said: 'She ticks every single box, from the way that she looks to the way she thinks and speaks. There is nothing that is wrong in her, apart from maybe writing on bananas. But nothing else. She has never put a foot wrong.'

At the 2013 gala, Meghan took on presenting duties with model Oliver Cheshire, one of Ede's close friends. At the time, Cheshire was dating pop star Pixie Lott, who is now his fiancee.

Former WAG Lizzie Cundy went to the event and did a short, filmed report from the red carpet.

The previous day, Lizzie and Meghan had met at a pre-awards dinner hosted by mobile phone tycoon John Caudwell. Others present included tennis star Boris Becker and Eva Longoria.

Lizzie, whose book Tales From The Red Carpet has just been published, was seated next to Meghan, and they became friends.

She said: 'She's a great laugh and we had fun straight away. She's a girlie girl.

'We were having a chat and then she said: 'Do you know any famous guys? I'm single and I really love English men.' So I said: 'We'll go out and find you someone.'

'I was thinking about some of the Chelsea lot and I thought of Ashley Cole, as he had split from Cheryl. I showed her a photo of Ashley and she was like: 'Oh yeah, he's cute.' '

Not long afterwards, Meghan went out for drinks with journalist Katie Hind and asked her what she knew about Ashley Cole.

Katie said that, over a bottle of prosecco in the Sanctum Soho Hotel, Meghan revealed that Cole followed her on Twitter and had been 'trying really hard' to persuade her to go on a date.

After being told of Cole's reputation as a cheat, Meghan replied: 'Thanks, I appreciate it. Some of my friends told me to stay away from him, too. I think I'll leave it.'

She then returned to Canada and soon started a romance with high-profile chef Cory Vitiello. They were an item from 2014 to 2016.

She settled into a social circle in Toronto which revolved around the exclusive members' club Soho House.

Her best friend, Jessica Mulroney, is married to Ben, the son of former Canadian PM Brian Mulroney.

The Mulroneys introduced Meghan to crooner Michael Buble at a dinner party at their house in 2015. Buble even put together a Christmas playlist (and plugged his own track, Cold December Night) for her lifestyle blog The Tig, which she has since shut down.

Another prong of the Toronto nexus was Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the wife of Canadian PM Justin. Most important of all was Markus Anderson, a Soho House executive who is her closest male friend and who attended both her hen night and her baby shower. He was positioned at the front of the chapel at her wedding, too.

Not that her elevation in Canadian social circles put an end to her fascination with the British hall of fame.

Shortly after her messages to Matt Cardle, Meghan was followed on Twitter by Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan.

Again, he was surprised when she followed him back right away and started messaging him, saying that she was a big fan of his work.

Morgan recalled: 'She sent me a private direct message: 'Well hello there — thanks for the follow. Big fan of yours!' '

He says that they spoke over Twitter regularly about everything from Rwanda to cycling classes, and that she would send him preview episodes of Suits.

In June 2016, she came to London as part of a month-long trip to Europe with friends. Lizzie Cundy saw her again. She said: 'By now she had become friends with the Made In Chelsea set and she was hoping to get a role on the show. She was close to show stars Millie Mackintosh and Jessica Woodley.

'She had also got to know TV presenter Natalie Pinkham and Bidders — Adam Bidwell — who was a friend of Harry's from that trip to Vegas.

'She still wasn't much more successful in Hollywood terms and was setting her sights on coming here to live if she could. She wanted it bad, and she did still want an English boyfriend.' Meghan met with Piers Morgan and spent 90 minutes drinking at his local, the Scarsdale Tavern in Kensington. She asked his advice on the media and requested a favour — that she be interviewed on his breakfast show, Good Morning Britain, on her next visit to help raise her profile.

Then she went to have dinner with friends at 5 Hertford Street in Mayfair. She met Prince Harry at the dinner that night, and Piers never heard from her again.

He said: 'Meghan Markle is a self-obsessed professional actress who has landed the role of her life and is determined to milk it for all she's worth.

'She's spent most of the past 20 years cosying up to people until they serve no more use to her, then airbrushing them out of her life without so much as: 'Goodbye, loser!' I know because I was one of them.' Harsh? Perhaps. But Piers's story is echoed in the experience of Lizzie Cundy, who said that she and Meghan exchanged texts when news of her romance with Prince Harry came out.

'I texted saying: 'Oh my God, I heard about Harry.' And she was like: 'Yeah, I know. We'll try and hook up.' She was probably told by the Palace to end contact with people she befriended in the media.

'I was literally ghosted by her.'

Meghan's former agent, Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne, who believed they were friends as well as professional associates, was also ghosted not long after Meghan met Prince Harry.

They had met in October 2014 at a One Young World youth leadership summit. Gina found her 'hugely charismatic' and very warm. By 2015, she was Meghan's agent. In an interview she said it was clear that Meghan's romance with Cory was coming to an end.

Meghan confided in Gina that she was going on a date with Prince Harry in July 2016.

Gina said: 'After the date, she was telling me what a great guy he was, a real gentleman, genuinely nice, and when I asked if she would see him again she said: 'Well, it looks like it.' '

Meghan returned from her trip to Botswana with Prince Harry saying: 'We're going to change the world.'

By October 2016, after she had been with Prince Harry for three months, she sent Gina an email to say that she was giving up her career and terminating their contract.

Gina later asked Meghan if it was possible to use a photo of her from the youth summit, and was hurt to receive a reply from Meghan's legal team. As Gina said: 'Meghan likes to move on.'

Made In Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh is another who can attest to that.

Millie was at Soho Farmhouse over the summer of 2016 when Meghan and Harry were romancing there. Meghan even captioned an Instagram picture of Millie saying how 'proud' she was of her friend.

There was talk that Millie was helping her to plan her wedding, but on the day of the ceremony, it became clear this was wide of the mark. Millie was at home, watching events unfold on TV, and minus an invitation.

'The contact just tailed off,' says a source. Another suggests Meghan was 'spooked' because she suspected Millie was leaking details of their friendship to the Press — which might endanger her romance with Prince Harry.

Nick Ede explained last year: 'Meghan had a lot of friends. That circle has reduced greatly.'

Lizzie Cundy concurs more bluntly: 'She ditched everyone.'

Well, not quite everyone.

As Meghan's make-up artist Daniel Martin revealed in a televised interview with U.S. chat-show host Gayle King recently, she will always make time for life's A-listers.

Telling King, another new and powerful friend of Meghan, of the moment pop superstars Beyonce and Jay Z accepted a Brit award in February 2018 while posing in front of a portrait of Meghan wearing a tiara, he said: 'I sent her a pic — I think it was a screen grab of the two of them in front of the portrait. Review: For You & No One Else by Roni Loren (Sourcebooks Casablanca, 5 July 2022)

The third installment in Roni Loren's Say Everything series dials up the angst considerably -- but with one protagonist addicted to her social media stats and the other outrunning a secret identity, high anxiety is a justifiable baseline. For You & No One Else still manages to deliver the banter, steam, and refreshingly nuanced emotional development readers of the series have come to expect. Just...angstier. 

Three-sentence summary: When a disaster first date shines a negative spotlight on therapist Eliza Catalano, her enigmatic new friend Beckham challenges her to give up social media for six months in favor of the analog lifestyle he prefers. As Beckham helps Eliza sever ties with her online persona, they discover a deep connection that challenges their wildly divergent ideas about romance, love, and relationships. If Eliza and Beck want to explore a future together, they'll have to confront the pasts they've been trying to deny -- and the reckoning may just tear them apart.

FY&NOE was my least favorite of the series so far, which isn't to say it's a bad book by any stretch -- it just didn't sparkle the way Hollyn's or Andi's stories did. The dynamic between Eliza and Beck felt less evenly matched than I would have liked; he comes off as somewhat judgmental about Eliza's lack of authenticity online (or rather, the lack of authenticity online in general), even as he obscures his personal history and basically lies by omission for 90% of the book. Their chemistry was off the charts, and Roni's dialogue always gets top marks... but I didn't fall in love with these characters as they fell in love with one another. The secondary relationship in any romance is the one between the leading couple and the reader, but I felt myself held at a remove from Eliza and Beck. Ultimately, it's that lack of connection that makes this a 3.5-star read for me, rounded up to 4 because Roni's writing slays.
