"Nimona" the movie art style inspiration
This tweet basically summarizes a big thing I've been thinking about when looking at reactions to the Nimona teaser and footage releases.
Tumblr media
But actually we have to go back to 2012 first, when Paperman the short film released under Disney (it was attached to Wreck-It Ralph).
For background, Nimona is a webcomic turned graphic novel by Nate Diana Stevenson. The adaptations rights were purchased by Fox in 2015, who assigned it to Blue Sky Studios to make. Disney purchased 20th Century [Fox] Animation in 2019, and shuttered Blue Sky before the film was complete, cancelling the project in February 2021. The film was picked up by Annapurna (production), DNEG (animation, with use of Blue Sky materials), and Netflix (distribution/marketing). It will premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on June 14th, 2023, show in limited theaters on June 23, 2023, and be on Netflix for general streaming on June 30th, 2023 at 3 AM EDT. Anyway, Paperman.
Tumblr media
Cannot stress enough that this short was really groundbreaking. While Nimona the movie adaptation didn't start life at Disney, 2012 was long before Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse came out in 2018 (or when it started production by 2015 or so). In point of fact, we knew back when Nimona was cancelled in 2021 (or earlier) that it was planned even then to use an evolved version of Paperman's art style. Notably, the short's animation supervisor was Patrick Osbourne. (Paperman's director, John Kahrs, also worked at Blue Sky prior to this, and the composer, Christophe Beck, is also composing the score for Nimona, but let's focus on Osbourne).
(Also kind of... random theory, a lot of people are criticizing the office building sequence in the Nimona teaser footage cause they think it looks "unfinished", I think because they're confusing intentionally minimalist "modern" design with being "unfinished". But a part of me kind of wonders if the design itself is some sort of homage to Paperman, which largely took place in an office building, though also it's just an office building, it's not surprising the design is minimalist).
Anyway, Feast the short film was released in 2014, and it was directed by Osbourne.
Tumblr media
Osbourne was later one of the original directors for the Nimona film before it was cancelled by Disney in 2021 (the article is from June 2015, and leads with the fact Osbourne directed Feast, and notes that he also worked on Paperman). Watch both the Paperman and Feast shorts, you'll see the same style there. Again, 2014 is a lot earlier than 2018.
And then of course Blue Sky (original animation studio for Nimona prior to the Disney cancellation) released The Peanuts Movie in 2015. DNEG has used a lot of Blue Sky Studios materials in their production to complete Nimona. A number of Blue Sky folks were brought back on to work on the project, as well. And based on leaked stuff from around the Disney cancellation, we know the stuff carried over (in the articles it's framed kind of like it leaked when the film was officially revived in April 2022, but the footage on the article came out around/before Nimona's cancellation in 2021).
Folks also need to remember that just because film A released after film B doesn't mean that film A was inspired by B, particularly with the long production schedules of animation (and in the case of something with as rocky a production history as Nimona).
From what I can tell, both Nimona and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse began production around the same time (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was in talks around 2014/2015, and seemingly was in at least pre-production by early 2015; Fox bought the adaptation rights for Nimona sometime in/around early June 2015). While Nimona was still in production when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse came out in 2018, it had been in production for around three years at that point. Certainly it was developing for a long time, even before it was cancelled in 2021 (6 years versus Spiderverse's 3), and projects stuck in development hell do make 180s sometimes. I just kind of doubt they just saw Spiderverse, or even the marketing materials for it, and completely redesigned things based solely on that, given what we know of the development plans and who they picked for the project. Comparatively, The Peanuts Movie also had a very long production time, seemingly, with the idea originating in 2006.
Whatever the case may be, and no shade on the amazing beauty of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (gorgeous, amazing film, please watch it if you haven't), I highly doubt we have Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to thank for Nimona the movie's existence/appearance, or later films or shows using similar styles. At best, I think there's a non-zero possibility that the 2018 success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse helped encourage Annapurna, DNEG, and Netflix to give Nimona a chance in 2021-2 to revive it after Disney shuttered Blue Sky Studios in 2021, but I doubt that's why the film looks the way it does, and the fact that what already existed for Nimona the film would have been a key convincing point there (e.g., here's our project that kind of looks like that/is planned to look that really popular thing).

For the second time today: WTF Scotland?
A man who identifies as transgender has admitted to sexually assaulting two female volunteers at a local food bank. Graeme Beck, 53, who also uses the name Jane Beck, targeted the women for abuse while working in the kitchen in the cities of Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway, between 2021 and 2022. Additionally, Beck also admitted to having exposed his penis to coworkers in a separate incident.
Tumblr media
Beck was also accused of repeatedly assaulting a 13-year-old girl but entered a plea of not guilty to the charge relating to that allegation, The Scottish Sunreported. He will return to court in April.
Beck was set to go on trial on Thursday, February 23, facing four charges total but instead decided to plead guilty to three of the four counts — including two of sexual assault and one of offending public decency.
The court heard how Beck began to frighten the female volunteers at the Fed Up Community Cafe at Stranraer Baptist Church, a facility for adults struggling with alcohol and drug dependencies and financial problems. The sexual incidents began in October of 2021, when Beck was a patron of the services at the food bank.
In November of 2021, Beck began volunteering in the kitchen, and was afforded more close contact with some of the female volunteers, including the one he’d already harassed.
Imran Hussein, prosecuting, told the court that the first victim said that “Beck was nice to her at the beginning,” but quickly began to develop a habit of touching her without her consent. She explained that Beck grabbed her by the arm, and, when she asked what he was doing, replied “just a wee bit of Strictly,” in a reference to the television program Strictly Come Dancing.
On other occasions, Beck would approach the woman from behind and “slide [his] body against the back of the complainer,” according to the prosecutor.
Hussein added: “It was full physical contact – it was deliberate, sexually motivated and the complainer developed a genuine fear of the accused.”
Despite the sexual nature of the crimes, Hussein used “she/her” pronouns to refer to Beck in his statements to the court.
A second female volunteer told the court that Beck had sexually groped her during what she had thought would be nothing more than a friendly hug. As she moved away, she said the behavior constituted “sexual harassment.” Beck laughed in response, and the woman reported the incident to the police.
In a separate incident related to his work with cosmetics company Avon, the court was told how Beck would participate in weekly conference calls from his home in Stranraer with colleagues between October and December 2021.
“The accused would wear a loosely tied dressing gown with nothing on underneath,” said Hussein. “The accused was warned on several occasions in relation to her attire by one of the complainers. On at least two occasions, the accused’s camera slipped, exposing her penis which was seen by other members,” Hussein said, using feminine pronouns to refer to Beck despite describing his genitals.
Beck, originally from Leeds, had been previously jailed for two years in 2008 after sexually assaulting a sleeping woman he met through volunteer work conducted through a Christian organization.
The woman, who began to trust him, had allowed him to sleep on her couch, and was horrified to discover that he had climbed into her bed, completely nude, before attempting to rape her.
Tumblr media
When Beck appeared in court in August 2008, his lawyer Robert Campbell claimed: “It could have been worse.”
Speaking to the Ayrshire Post during the court case, the victim said: “His lawyer said in court that it could have been worse. How could it have been worse? That is
a ludicrous statement. I thought I was going to die. I was attacked in my own home, the place where I should be most safe.”
Campbell further attempted to argue that the victim was to blame, having allowed Beck back into her home the following day.
The victim blasted Beck’s lawyer in press, stating the defender had gotten the facts of the case completely incorrect: “How mad would I have to be to do that after what happened? That is factually incorrect … He ran off to Leeds the next day, where he was arrested. I had police and forensics teams in my house the whole day,” she said.
“It was also claimed in court that he left when I asked him to. Again, that isn’t true. I had to fight for my life to get him off me. He had his hand on my throat, I thought I would never see my children again.”
Beck had told the woman that he was unable to return to his own residence to sleep, claiming he had allowed another person to stay the night there.
“He tried to make out in court that we were in a relationship,” the victim told the press. “I had never been alone with this man before. I didn’t want to have him sleeping over in my house but as an act of kindness, I let him.”
“I’ve been through hell,” she added at the time, foreshadowing the most recent attacks by stating: “He is evil and I believe he will strike again.”
For the 2008 attack, he was placed on the sex offenders’ registrar for a term of 10 years, but his name would have been removed in 2018. Since pleading guilty to three of the more recent sex offenses he was charged with, Beck has been re-added to the register ahead of his anticipated sentencing in April. He has also been referred for a criminal justice social work report and risk assessment.

History and Nature
There was a story that I stumbled upon a while ago by Molly Seaman, when researching the Holocaust. She visited Krakow, Poland which can be designated as a place of memory. As explained in the textbook, a place of memory is a property or site vested with historical significance due to the nature of the historic events that occurred there (Beck et al., 2018). Her story is called The Trees Have Eyes and it’s about her experience visiting the largest German Nazi concentration camp in Poland. She says, “The trees. The trees of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The trees that saw everything. That is when it hit me. The trees have eyes (Seaman, 2021).” She was appealing to the fact that the trees that stood long before her, had witnessed the atrocities of genocide and are part of the landmarks that stand today as a reminder of what 1.1 million people went through (Seaman, 2021). The story about the trees doesn’t only apply to her experience but she applies it to the experience of others, like the trees having seen farmers struggling to make ends meet because they can’t cultivate their land due to climate change (Seaman, 2021).
Within her story, Seaman does exactly what entails the role of a history interpreter. Remembering stories of the past, whether they are tragedies, atrocities or happy memories, is very important as one can look back at the past and change the future so the mistakes and atrocities the trees have seen while quietly planted, will not be repeated.
I shared Seaman’s story, because it encapsulates the quote we were to unpack this week. To me, this quote highlights how ancient things have no value on their own. To expand, ancient relics hold value due to the memories they hold as well as the history behind it. This is what adds to the entertainment value of specific areas. As the textbook mentioned, quality living history will provide entertainment on its own (Beck et al., 2018). Whether the entertainment is in the form of stories or sightseeing of ancient things. This is what allows ancient relics to live on and we cannot forget about it as the tracks cannot forget about the train that has passed through. Just like Seaman’s story, the Holocaust impacted millions of people and we don’t forget about the history or keep it in the past. It is still discussed today due to the remnants of the past - families impacted, lives lost, stories for generations.
In essence, the quote emphasizes the importance of respecting and maintaining antiquity, not due to their age but their role in maintaining integrity throughout time. It cautions against overlooking the past as insignificant highlighting how history is woven through the past but also affects the present and future.

Propaganda - Draft 1 (About 500 words)
For my personal project, I decided to focus on the topic of Propaganda, whilst also briefly linking it to technological innovation and how propaganda effects us now in a modern world full of easily accessible fake news. I decided to focus on propaganda as it is not a topic I have thoroughly researched previously and wanted to broaden my knowledge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before WW1, the word propaganda was not commonly used in the English language and when it was, it was mainly used by social activists. The word propaganda often resided with Catholics before it was changed into a political term in the 19th century. This term had then been associated with secret organizations spreading opinions and often lies in order to influence public opinion and to create a bias. This is also when the word started to get a negative connotation surrounding it.
Although, many believe propaganda is mainly spread through posters, it is much more versatile in which media it presents itself in. Many other ways it is used include: speeches, radio and film. Nowadays, it can be hiding anywhere and affect a much larger group in a shorter amount of time. Especially with the use of social media and influencers, many can now simply voice their opinions and sway a large audience in one sitting. Many politicians also use social media to spread slander and dishonesty, in hopes of swaying the public and win their votes.
One of the most recent  instances we have of political propaganda, comes from the Russian v Ukraine war. Disinformation such as: manipulated photographs, state propaganda and deep fake videos are all used to intimidate and gain advantage over the other country. Another fairly recent example of propaganda and mass disinformation surrounded a first responder team in Syria, the White Helmets. This group was known to save thousands of lives everyday as they worked on the first aid frontline of the civil war and even had a Netflix show. The information around the White Helmets is quite messy, many believing they have been nothing but a PR stunt to paint the western world as heroic when in fact it was all staged (this claim was more often made by the Russian and Syrian government in hopes of painting them as the good guys). Some believed they were real but intensified their videos in order to gain more of a shock factor. Others were shocked that they had decided to film a video surrounding the mannequin challenge, where whilst pulling a boy out of rubble they are frozen mid-rescue, this creating a surge of more people questioning the truth.
A lot of the time propaganda is filled with ill intent, often benefiting the organization/individual behind the disinformation over the viewer. We see it everyday. We see it everywhere. But we are rarely ever able to recognize it. From distractions, emotional manipulation and self-guilt these are all tactics used by those behind the creation of propaganda.

Johnny Depp, last Saturday (March 19, 2022) after attending a private benefit gig at the Troubadour Club, in West Hollywood, California.
On that night, Johnny attended a private gig tribute honoring the late singer, songwriter, actor Chuck E. Weiss, in what would be his 77th birthday.  Unfortunately, Chuck (who was also Johnny’s friend and even played together) passed away last July 20, 2021 due to cancer.
It’s been said that Johnny also played guitar, but it was not confirmed yet. Also, while leaving the club Johnny greeted dozens of fan and photographers, took photos, gave autographs, hugs and received a lot of support after spending long lovely minutes with them.
Johnny was also asked in what he was working on right now (thank lord someone made a good question) and Johnny after a few seconds answered: “Yeah... I’ve been doing a thing I’ve been working on… I’m in flux” after chuckle a little.
The “I’m in flux” part means that he is an “in a state of flux”, he is “constantly changing”.
By saying that, Johnny doesn’t confirmed or not that he is working in something new, but we know that he is pretty busy with dozens of projects, such as: * The upcoming filming of his new movie in France set to start in July 2022. * His Never Fear Truth NFT collection and Discord server. * The upcoming Art Exhibition in Serbia * His new European production company. * The new documentary about Charlie Chaplin * The upcoming songs with Hollywood vampires and the book he is writing. * His and Jeff Beck’s upcoming album * The upcoming trial in Virginia in April, 2022.
In other words, Johnny is always working in something, always “in flux”.
STAY STRONG JOHNNY!

Hello Glass! This might be a weird question, but do you have a list of essential Phantom casts that PotO phans should watch? By this I mean a list of casts that everyone should watch at least once, whether it be because of their importance/significance or because of how good they were. Thank you!
Yep, I've done that before! I absolutely do not guarantee the links will still be working (I did make some of these posts years ago), but this was one I made as a way of introducing new phans to the show. This was specifically written to highlight good casts that I felt didn't get talked about a lot, and this post kind of complements it by putting in some of those most popular cast members.
Since you mentioned performers who are important because they're significant, I'd also recommend the following:
Broadway; April 1988 - It's the original Broadway cast, and the original trio of performers (Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and Steve Barton) who opened the show in London, so it's definitely of historical significance. That being said, the video has suffered a lot of generation loss, so if it's not worth making your eyes bleed, you can check out the better quality videos of Crawford in his LA run.
San Francisco; October 14, 1998 - Franc D'Ambrosio was, for a time, one of the longest-running Phantoms ever, and he was at the San Francisco production for literally years. There's definitely a good reason for that, hence why he goes on this list. And also because he has a mega-fan on Tumblr who would kill me if I didn't recommend him. The October 15, 1998 video is also good and more complete, though with somewhat less close-ups.
Toronto; November 15, 1998 - Peter Karrie is a popular, if somewhat polarizing, Phantom, especially in the olden days of the phandom. This video taken from fairly late in his overall time as Phantom really showcases that. An interesting watch just to see how you feel about his quite interesting take on the character.
Broadway; September 20, 1999 - Howard McGillin is the longest-running Phantom on Broadway. I assume that was for a reason. This video is supposed to be one of his best performances. I wouldn't know, I don't really care about his Phantom. But hey, you said significant actors.
London; February 25, 2006 - John Owen-Jones is another very popular Phantom, and this video, which also happens to be of his last performance at the time, is a really great capture of him, he has lots of energy and screaming power. It also features Rachel Barrell as Christine, and it can be fun to compare her performance here to later videos of her with Earl Carpenter and Matthew Cammelle.
London; August 18, 2010 - This video can be a bit difficult to get since it's technically supposed to be not for trades or sales, but if you do (maybe beg an accommodating trader enough), it's well worth a watch just for Gina Beck's Christine alone, as she's quite a popular Christine among fans.
Broadway; May 17, 2014 - Norm Lewis was the first black Phantom on Broadway, and here he's paired with Sierra Boggess, probably one of the most popular Christines in the phandom. The video itself is really great quality too, so definitely an essential cast to watch!
London; August/September 2021 - Video of not only the re-opened London production, but also of Lucy St Louis, the first black Christine in London! Unfortunately the video that's available for trade is only of Act 2, so you can supplement it with the September 2021 video of Holly-Anne Hull, the alternate Christine.
Broadway; December 2021 - This video isn't up for trade for a while, but it's of the re-opened Broadway production (which has some minor differences from the London production), it's of Emilie Kouatchou, the first black Christine on Broadway, and it's with fan favorite Jeremy Stolle as the Phantom.
Hope that helps!

Listed: Lanterna
Tumblr media
Photo by Theo Merritt (c) 2021
Lanterna is the ambient shoegaze project of Champaign, Illinois veteran Henry Frayne, who, in the 1980s, played with midwestern bands including The Syndicate, ¡Ack-Ack!, Area, and The Moon Seven Times. In her review of Frayne’s seventh album as Lanterna, Hidden Drives, Jennifer Kelly noted that, “It hits a sweet spot in the overlap between ambient meditation and propulsive groove.” Here are some of the songs and artists that inspire Frayne.
The Past Seven Days — “Rain Dance”
youtube
I joined a Champaign band called ¡Ack-Ack! in 1984 and in addition to learning about group composition I gained access to their mix tape library and LP collection. One song on a mixtape was “Rain Dance,” a curiously long song for a 7" from a band that only released one 7".
A song with a guitar part that is almost all harmonics is stunning. Also, the dark and unsettling drones that hover at the edge of the sonic space (with indistinct voices and the insistent beat.) I’m not sure how many other guitarists it inspired but I have to say I did eventually end up recording a song using only harmonics. After all these years I am hearing the slow fadeout for the first time and those rather discordant notes at the very end.
Tubeway Army — “Me! I Disconnect From You”
youtube
My father always returned home from his travels with an LP for me from the places he had visited. In April of 1979 he and my mom were coming back from Europe and meeting me at my grandparents’ house in Riverside, NJ. I had been listening to a newly acquired copy of The Yes Album on an old console turntable when my father pulled out a copy of Tubeway Army’s Replicas from his luggage. He’d walked into a record shop in London before flying home and asked, “What's hot this week?”
One might wonder how this influential piece of vinyl affected me. How many copies of Replicas were in the US at that time? Did I start my own dystopian synth band in the garage when arriving in Maine that summer? Did I flee to the relative comfort of my progressive rock albums (where ironically the Minimoog had been in common use for some years!)? The answer is that Tubeway Army’s Replicas still sounds as mysterious as it did in the parlor of my grandparents’ house all those years ago.
StarCastle — “True To The Light”
youtube
My brother’s high school newspaper interviewed the resident local progressive rock band StarCastle in January of 1977 (at the local Champaign Pizza Hut on the U of I campus). My brother brought home the brand new Fountains of Light and I proceeded to put on Side 2 and was met with the heavenly flanged/chorused vocals of StarCastle’s “True To The Light.”
StarCastle were mostly local lads. Three of the members had graduated from my high school a few years before. They were signed to Epic Records at the time and recorded with Roy Thomas Baker (for two albums in one year). A friend delivered papers to their band house and hung out with them when they weren’t touring which was always! It was only in recently years that I’ve realized just how much StarCastle toured. They played with practically every band that passed through the Midwest and beyond in the mid-1970s.And it being the 1970s they thought nothing of releasing two RTB produced albums in the calendar year of 1977!
The StarCastle experience taught me that music on LP records can come from people who live in small towns just down the street from where one was playing Little League baseball.
The Chameleons — “On The Beach”
youtube
A blur of sound! It is still hard for me to believe that these songs were recorded in a conventional studio and not just sounds echoing through the glens captured by a bird watcher with a tape recorder in the Peak District.
Giles, Giles & Fripp feat. Judy Dyble — “I Talk To The Wind”
youtube
From reading about The Brondesbury Tapes it is apparent that they were recorded on a Revox reel to reel machine with the sound-on-sound function which allowed one to add a new part to an existing track (a function which could be repeated a number of times). This yielded a mono master, but it is in fact composed of multiple performances.
Before acquiring a Tascam 4-track I created songs using a Revox A77. As well as being able to create my first tape echo effects on the A77 it taught me a lot about mixing instrument parts together. It is fun to imagine the folks in Brondesbury Road going through the same process as I did to make this recording of “I Talk To The Wind.”
Blitz — “For You”
youtube
Another album borrowed from a member of ¡Ack-Ack!. It was the era of lightly chorused guitar and bass. I’ve always been in awe of the glassy sounding guitars on this track, and puzzled by the haltingly uncertain guitar solo near the end. One can feel the legendary ambience of Strawberry North throughout this track.
The Vertebrats — “Left In The Dark”
youtube
Sophomore year at Champaign Central High School a classmate started playing in a group called The Vertebrats. In December of 1979 I was in the audience in the chapel at the Red Herring Coffeehouse in Urbana, Illinois to see one of their earliest shows. The chapel would always sport a very reverberant sound but with vocals, two guitars (one a Fender Mustang favoring the treble pickup), drums, and bass it was an awesome experience. For one, there was someone I knew making this ruckus, in addition to the songs and particularly “Left In The Dark” being instant classics. I’d started seeing rock shows at the local arena the year before but never up close with the band playing at floor level. I had a handheld Sony tape recorder on loan during that time but sadly didn’t take it along to this legendary show.
The Beatles — “Only A Northern Song”
youtube
In June of 1974, following afternoon showings of The Seven Samurai, and Modern Times at the University of Illinois, my father and I did our usual rounds to the local new and used record emporiums. Record shops proper, but also The Salvation Army. It was here amongst the discarded shirts, slacks, pots, and pans that I spied the distinctive artwork of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album. I’d seen the film a few years before when it was first in the theaters, and still had the songs buzzing in my head. Being able to listen to songs from a film at home was a new concept which I was willing to dive into. The band was most certainly not quite right but that was okay with me!
The Wild Flowers — “The Promised Land”
youtube
A purchase at Champaign’s Record Swap (still around, now in Urbana at Lincoln Square!) in the Fall of 1984. As was the case with The Sound’s Heads and Hearts, The Quaker would hand me an album from behind the counter and it would go on to influence me for years to come. My favorite guitar, bass, synth, and drum sounds of all time!
Yardbirds w/ Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck — Blow Up (1966)
youtube
With a father who taught film studies at the University of Illinois, it fell to him to once in a while check incoming acquisitions to the 16mm film library there. I’m sure that I didn’t see ALL of Antonioni’s Blow Up but I'm sure I bestirred myself from doing my grade school homework when the opening howl of “Stroll On” tore through the Frayne household one summer’s eve.
At the time I had no way of knowing that the chap on stage right was the very same guitarist playing some wicked (heavenly?) acoustic and electric guitar (including a Fender Electric XII) on a certain tune that WLS would be playing every hour on the hour for the next several years.

Unit 09 Blog Post – Bears: Beauty or Beast?
If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll probably know that I’m one of the unlucky few who wasn’t born with the itch to interpret nature. Although I suppose, the itch for nature interpretation doesn’t have to be something your born with, it can be something you develop over your life. That said, a part of nature that I have always been fascinated by has been bears.
Tumblr media
So, how did this fascination with bears begin? Looking back many years, I think my first exposure to bears was through the TV show The Bernstein Bears (2003 – 2004). I can vividly recall watching reruns of The Bernstein Bears every day after school when I was in kindergarten. Needless to say, if I remember something from so long ago, I think it’s safe to assume that it’s something that deserves to be explored! Looking ahead many years, this fascination with bears was only further exacerbated upon the release of the movie Ted (2012). What stood out to me the most in both these media representations of bears was their interpretation of bears as human-like beings.
A great example of this is the video linked below in which the family of bears in The Bernstein Bears go to the movies. I encourage you to have a watch and share your thoughts (iVideoXD, 2010, 0:00-5:28)!
youtube
What are bears? Bears (of the family Ursidae) are stocky, bob-tailed mammals with 5 clawed toes on each paw (The Canadian Encyclopedia, 2012). The three species of bears that inhabit Canada are (The Canadian Encyclopedia, 2012):
The polar bear (Ursus maritimus).
The grizzly bear (U. arctos).
The black bear (U. americanus).
More information about bears can be found here (National Geographic, 2021).
Tumblr media
This photo was taken the first time I went exploring in nature. I remember thinking how lucky I was to see a dear in person (as can be seen in the photo), almost immediately after I put away my phone, I saw a bear! Caledon, ON – Photo taken by Agam Verma.
How does one interpret bears? It is important to note that the interpretation of bears, and by extension nature as a whole, is contingent on the expertise of a number of disciplines (Hooykaas, 2021). As a matter of fact, in the past, humans have been able to interpret bears via zoos, wildlife parks, camps, etc. (Beck et al., 2018, p. 32-33). All of which, have allowed each individual to foster a more harmonious relationship with bears, and by extension nature!
Tumblr media
A polar bear and two cubs photographed on a melting ice cap (NOAA, 2019).
Let’s look beyond the traditional methods in which bears can be interpreted. Currently, the concept most applicable to the interpretation of bears would be climate change. Climate change looms as a threat to communities and safety on many fronts (Beck et al., 2018, p. 459). Within the context of bears, it is quite evident that climate change has endangered a number of bear species. As a matter of fact, the IUCN lists six of the eight bear species as vulnerable or endangered (Bear Conservation, 2017).
So, what can we do to help mitigate the effects of climate change on bears? The answer is simple, keep track of your impact on the planet! This will not only aid in mitigating the challenges we face with climate change, but also allow for bears to not go extinct. Thereby, enriching the history, cultural heritage, experiences, diversity, etc. of those who choose to be interpreters.
More information about how you can help save bears, in this case polar bears, can be found here (Three Ways You Can Help Save the Polar Bears, 2020). Have a read and share your thoughts!

Making Science Assessable → Positive Change
“Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela
Tumblr media
Photo by Jaredd Craig on Unsplash
Nature interpretation and science communication are two outstanding ways to discover our environment. When you think about it, science is an interpretation of nature... Science education (which focuses primarily on teaching knowledge and skills) and environmental education (which stresses the incorporation of values and changing behaviours) have a synergistic relationship. Why is this so?
“Science is simply the word we use to describe a method of organizing our curiosity” – Tim Minchin
Tumblr media
Photo by Samantha Gollway on Unsplash
Let’s take climate change for example. If you have little education and/or misconceptions about climate change, you are less likely to modify your actions in order to protect the environment. On the other hand, if you have a good understanding about climate change and its adverse effects on the environment, you would be more likely to change your behaviours in order to effect positive change. But how can nature interpreters effectively utilize science communication to combat global issues, and consequently, effect positive change? I think this comes down to the accessibility and presentation of scientific information.
“We cannot solve problems with the same thinking we used to create them” – Albert Einstein
youtube
Most people agree that it is important to engage children and to support public understanding of science. Ever since 'impact' entered the government's vocabulary, funding bodies have started to inquire about the societal impact of research and 'public engagement' has appeared in academic strategy papers. Despite this, motivation and active involvement varies hugely and too often it is down to a few passionate individuals to drive engagement projects forward. So, what can we do, as interpreters, to bring our knowledge, understanding, and research to a wider audience?
“The power of social media is that it forces necessary change” – Erik Qualman
Tumblr media
An incredible and accessible way to communicate science is through blog posts; something we are all very familiar with at this point. Blog posts tend to be a lot shorter and less formal than scientific articles. This makes them more accessible to a non-expert audience. Furthermore, blogs have the potential to incorporate visual and dynamic content (such as animated videos, podcast interviews, and science songs). Social media is another possibility and a new vehicle to enable science to travel from the lab to the outside world. It offers great flexibility, creative freedom and opportunities for discussion with people you would never normally encounter.
“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.” – Kofi Annnan
Tumblr media
Photo by Marty Serlesto on Unsplash
As nature interpreters, multidisciplinary approaches to conveying information is another avenue we can use to make science more accessible. A multidisciplinary team approach involving several professionals with their own expertise is important in attaining an optimal effect. We often teach as if knowledge is discrete and compartmentalized, whereas in reality, the most enjoyable and reinforcing aspects of learning are seeing and experiencing the connections between different subject areas.
“Accessibility allows us to tap into everyone’s potential” – Debra Ruh
Tumblr media
Accessibility issues also impede many people’s opportunities to connect with science. For example, people with dyslexia cannot use read-out-loud software because it is not well suited to journal articles with citations. Furthermore, wet labs are designed for people with no physical challenges, and, despite being the most popular event at scientific conferences, poster sessions are probably the least accessible.
“The disability is not the problem. The accessibility is the problem.” – Mohamed Jemni
Tumblr media
Photo by Jake Spitz on Unsplash
Evidently, the accessibility and presentation of scientific information is crucial and the way in which we interpret this information can make a huge difference. Combining accessible science education with effective environmental interpretation can change the world...
Some Questions for You:
Have you had the opportunity to make science more accessible to others in the past? If so, how? If not, have others made science more accessible to you?
Social media can be a great avenue for distributing information. However, do you see any problems with this platform in terms of teaching/interpreting science?
How, as a nature interpreter, would you go about educating the general public surrounding climate change (or any other large global issue)? Could art interpretation and science interpretation be used in tandem?
