Today we will talk about Cassetes!
I am very bold to assume that not everyone knows what this is so here's a quick definition:
a sealed plastic unit containing a length of audio tape, videotape, film, etc. wound on a pair of spools, for insertion into a recorder, playback device, or other machine

Now that you have a brief idea of what it is I want to explain to you how they're built, who came up with them, and when they started to be sold.
Compact Cassettes have two miniature spools between those there is the magnetically coated, polyester-type plastic film (Also called magnetic tape. Side fact: The original magnetic material was based on gamma ferric oxide Fe2O3).
The audio is recorded onto it by using the incoming sound wave, having been converted by a microphone into an electrical signal, which produces a time-varying magnetic field in the gap of the magnet. As the tape moves past the recording head, the powder is magnetized in such a way that the tape carries a record of the electric signal.
Now that that is out of the way we can finally discover who came up with these beautiful sound devices.
The Cassette tape was invented by a Dutchman called Lou Ottens (21.06.1926 - 6.03.2021) and his team at the company Phillips, they released the first Cassette in 1963.
Short after the Walkman was released to the market, a Walkman is a portable cassette player, they were brought to the market by Sony (who else honestly) on the 1st of July 1979 (The model was named TPS-L2 which I found on eBay for a whopping 2000 Euros or 2177,50 US Dollars)
Shortly after the Cassette, we got CDs then iPods and now we have online streaming platforms too! This makes music easily accessible to everyone!

New hardware engines provide accurate noise reduction (MCNR), face detection (HWFD), and video HDR in the Dimensity 7300. This allows users to take beautiful pictures and videos in any kind of lighting. Compared to the Dimensity 7050, live focus and photo remastering are 1.3X and 1.5X faster, respectively. In addition, 4K HDR video may be recorded with a dynamic range that is more than 50% broader than competing solutions, allowing users to capture more detail in their recordings.
The MediaTek APU 655 doubles the performance of the Dimensity 7050 while also greatly increasing the efficiency of AI tasks. Also, in order to reduce memory requirements for larger AI models and more effectively use memory bandwidth, the Dimensity 7300 chips support new mixed precision data types.

Avoid signing contracts, if possible, if not double check the content for possible mistakes or misleading information. It is a good time for study and research. People who say this are blatantly unfamiliar with romance publishing because, well, it has always been like this.
Romance has always been one of the genres with the largest number of books published per year, and most of it has always been very tropey and paint-by-the-numbers stuff meant to do little more than scratch the itches in your Id. And that's cool! That's its purpose! Romance readers have always been very strict in their expectations: they want predictable things and tropes they like and don't want experimental.
Most of it was also always written with tight deadlines and to fit trendy prompts - now it's tropes and the author is required to dish one out in under a year WHILE doing the marketing, back in the heydays of Harlequin they did the marketing for you and paid you a set fee but you had an even tighter deadline. Don't get me wrong, there are some incredibly talented writers in romance (LaVyrle Spencer is amazing), but the industry has always functioned like this.
And a lot of it included tons of fucked up stuff: I invite you to read something like Stormfire by Christine Monson and compare and contrast with any messed up dark erotica in 2024 - it's the exact same stuff.
It rarely if ever influenced any broader publishing trends because the sort of people who pick what to publish in other genres mostly look down on romance. You just notice the existence of these books more now because there's social media, and because women have (thank god) stopped being ashamed of reading them, and because, since Twilight and its related crop of YA romantasy, a lot of them are also marketed as fantasy-lite and feature various magical creatures.
What's funny to me is that this snobbery is trying to coexist with the broader trend of "reclaiming female-oriented genres", so you'll get the same person defending paint-by-the-numbers airport romance novels from the 90s ("there can be artistry in them! you just hate them because they're for women! they're often bad because the publishing industry is merciless and the author doesn't have the time or space to develop their idea!") while bashing tiktok books for the exact same things. Not to mention the even more absurd crop of people who think fanfiction is a beautiful and sacred art form with a long and proud tradition and will defend it to death while bashing tiktok books when a lot of the flaws of tiktok romance exist because the author was excessively influenced by fanfiction without understanding why a trope or narrative device doesn't work as well in original fiction.
can I be so real with you. can I be honest. totally aside from the moral panic about women on booktok being """porn addicts""" because they're reading erotica, I think it's so fucking goofy when people act as if there needs to be some kind of societal reckoning with how tiktok books "aren't very good." like, okay? they're commercial products mass produced for entertainment. tiktok didn't invent that; you're going to have to take it up with pulp magazines and dime novels and comic books. you guys would throw up if you found out about Fanny Hill.
