Give and Take.

Zonke Dikana has made her break in the South African music industry when she released her first offering, Life, Love ‘n Music in 2007. Zonke had taken a big break from singing but have been busy writing hits for other artists. This talented writer, released her second offering in 2011, Ina Ethe, which means “Give and Take”. Ina Ethe has rejuvenated the slowly dying Afro Pop genre and has given us a breath of fresh air. The musicality and the different sounds that she plays around with in the songs, the way that she plays with the vocals in the songs is interestingly beautiful. As an Afro Pop music fan, I first asked myself, “what is another Afro Pop artist going to bring that Judith Sephuma or Simphiwe Dana or any other well-known afro pop artist hasn’t?” The very first single that Zonke had released off her first album,Uzondilinda featuring the amazing Thandiswa Mazwai had the answer.

The Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape, South Africa) born, Zonke wrote and produced all the songs in the album. It features the hit tracks, Jik’izinto, Feelings - a song that talks about a relationship so bad that there is no communication at all between the two people and it is difficult for the other to stay -and Ngomso - a song about a loved one who promised to come back tomorrow but just did not keep the promise. Viva The Legend is the song that is dedicated to her father, the late drummer, Viva Dikana. These are some of my favourite tracks from the record.

The album opens with the title track Ina Ethe, all that Zonke is asking for in this song is your (listener) ear, following with Uzohamb’ ubuye a song basically meaning, “you can leave me now but I know you’ll come back” (actual lyrics from the song). Songs that tell stories like I know A Place are nothing less magical together with Chivalry Is Dead with its eastern influences. Some of my picks from the album are: When All Is Said and Done, Sobabini, Nameless. The former has a very nice mild musical experimentation with the reggae-tempo and sounds very different from the other songs.

Ina Ethe is a must listen! It has this nice soul thing going on. Its musicality draws one’s attention from the first track  to the last.
