The Five Year Plan were a Bristol, England band whose members went onto bands like Heavenly, The Beatnik Filmstars among others. It's always interesting to listen to the pre-bands of indie semi-gods. Rob Pursey (Heavenly, Swansea Sound) and Tim Rippington (The Beatnik Filmstars, The Charlie Tipper Rebellion) founded the band as teens. It's the classic story of learning to play instruments together and finding a sound.
The band wrote and recorded "1985" but it never released. A couple of years ago they reformed and "properly" re-recorded the album, but added no new sounds. We posted their 2014 compilation CD release "Peacetime Broadcast" back in 2016. A lot of the comparisons remain - The June Brides, Orange Juice, Monochrome Set. This has a decided C86 sound.

Hand-written playlist for one of my circa-1994 Record Hospital radio shows on WHRB, 95.3 FM in Cambridge, MA.
I could probably get more precise about the month, or at least the season of this playlist if I did a bit more digging about the newer songs played here. But this is a blog, not a scholarly journal, so “sometime in 1994″ will have to suffice.
My “circle-N” notation next to select songs marked it as a new release, whether from the station collection (”the coffins”) or my own. The rule of thumb for Record Hospital air was to shoot for roughly 1/3 new music, with a floor of 1/4. No nostalgia trips here. Given how into discovering new music I was—and am—this was no problem whatsoever.
That Kicking Giant song really launched this show, a perfect opener. And there are so many other bangers here, from classics (Alternative TV, Buzzcocks) to then-currents (The Bear Quartet, Beatnik Filmstars). I am a little embarrassed to find that I’d also played that Tse Tse Fly song (which is great) in another 1994 playlist I’d written about earlier. But I could rattle off a number of other classics for which I was probably guilty of overplaying. To name two: “I Wanna Destroy You” by The Soft Boys” and “Son of A Gun” by The Vaselines. At least both hadn’t yet reached 2021-level saturation.
I’m pretty sure I have an actual tape of this show somewhere in my rack of cassettes. But that is another project for another day.

Beatnik Filmstars sent me the tape with their first 3 John Peel Sessions in the 00s. The last song _Is this Is Rad?_ is one of my fav ever. You can hear John Peel in the beginning and end with a short cameo of a Mary Anne Hobbs in her first years on BBC.

Vasilis Klb - Kissamatic Lovebubbles
A piece of music that needs to be played loud
Television Personalities - If I Could Write Poetry
A piece of music that moves you forward
The Brilliant Corners - Oh!
A piece of music that gets stuck in your head
The Shop Assistants - Seems To Be
A piece of music that makes you want to dance
The Primitives - Stop Killing Me!
A piece of music that makes you feel badass
The Last Drive - Have Mercy
A piece of music that you remember from your childhood
The Barracudas - Summer Fun
A piece of music that reminds you your hometown
The Manhattan Love Suicides - Never Far From You The piece of music you’ve listened to the most
The Wedding Present - Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now?
Vasilis Klb is the lead singer of the band “Kissamatic Lovebubbles”, who started their career way back in 1991. After taking a break in 1995 they eventually reformed in 2017. Their sound is one from the underground, noisy twee pop with a lo-fi garage punk edge and even though the band only released one single for the now legendary label “This Happy Feeling”, their songs have been included on many compilations, tapes etc and featured in several fanzines.
Vasilis also hosts his own radio show in the nineties and along with his colleagues from the 90s Athens indie pop scene creates the popular fanzine called “Make Me Happy”. You can also quite often catch him DJing out and about, spinning his vinyl collection at unique parties and late night clubs.
Bring us up to date, he runs his own successful independent underground label called “Old Bad Habits”. The label started off as a home for Kissamatic Lovebubbles but then almost immediately turned into becoming a label for other acts as well. The Greek label has released some of the most important and exciting records with artists from the area and beyond. The roster is full of indie music superstars like Jowe Head, The Flatmates, Arrest! Charlie Tipper, Beatnik Filmstars and The Yellow Melodies.
This along with many other European acts the label also supports many homegrown artists like Jimmy Knows, Dark Matters, Red Light, The Acid Barretts and the mighty The WaterStriders.
Vasilis is always working hard on new projects and is at present involved in building a network of European independent labels all sharing the same ethics and values. Helping to spread the spirit of the music they all love globally.

Raving Pop Blast! Recordings (UK) have taken it upon themselves to release "new" music from The Groove Farm (UK). "The Surf Shop" is a more recent release that sounds like it was firmly planted in the C86 scene of the 1980s. Members of The Groove Farm went on to form The Beatnik Filmstars.
While only "Kvatch" is currently represented on Bandcamp, you can hear sounds of The Dentists and The Wedding Present or any number of 2000s bands: for example, Veronica Falls. It should also be mentioned that the 7" single "Surfin' Into Your Heart" does sound a bit like Game Theory.
Raving Pop Blast! reminds me a bit of Precious Recordings. Reissue, but find new/unreleased music from the bands you love.

Page from my personal journal: a review of Soho record store Selectadisc, from my trip to London, August 1995.
Another in a series of record store reviews from my UK trip diary, summer 1995. My overall impression of Selectadisc was pretty positive. In particular, I found a lot to love in the 7″ singles section:
Selectadisc (Berwick) New CDs, 7″es and LPs. Looks like a run-of-the-mill “indie” CD store from the outside (and name), but the secret here is the 7″ vinyl, tucked away in a corner near the back. Good selection of new U.S. and UK indie. A couple of things I saw here and no where else, esp. U.S. pop (FLW [Four Letter Words] label), the new Beatnik Filmstars 7″ on Mobstar, plus Slampt, etc. Bunch of fanzines. 12″ vinyl is more predictable, less adventurous, but good U.S. 12″/LP section. Credit cards—Amex only?
Interesting that I called out that the store accepted credit card(s). Hard to believe that, as little as 26 years ago, so many shops still operated on a cash-only basis.

Local Adelaide, SA Bands Maybe
Going on a trip in Australia bac in ’08 i saw flyer for a concert at The Edimburgh Castle in Adelaide. First there was The UK special with a cover of VU’s Sister Ray in the end. I really liked them because they had that kind of seriousness of Beatnik Filmstars. And then the AMcats. Sure they were from Adelaide and that they were really really fond of the White Stripes. Anyways a good night out with very friendly aussie audience. There was another band but drinking beer made me forget to press REC.
