We all have secrets to hide. Can you keep a secret? Single mom Stephanie investigates the disappearance of a new friend when she fails to pick her son up after a playdate. Plots within plots...whoa boy - Imma have to read the book to see if the movie did it justice, or if it was as good as the movie. (because OMG the movie was wild) I liked it more than I thought I was going to after seeing the trailer, posters and standees for however long they were at work. And the trailer really only gives away like the first 30-45 minutes and then it goes off the rails (at least from the little to no expectation I had.) The humor was a nice balance to how...if not dark, how serious, some parts got. Whoo #AnnaKendrick - yea buddy. Her small stature, the funny awkward interaction with the cop, and the “mommy vlog” were a nice contrast to #BlakeLively’s character - the tall statuesque, mysterious blonde, who had the balls to talk to her boss like that. I mean - her entrance, those outfits - Lively can act, in things like this, but then also does stuff like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Shallows, and Green Lantern. I liked the vlog “breaking the fourth wall” for like the whole first scene (basically the part of the movie covered in the trailer) and at the end, and reading the older vlog posts along the side and the comments on the bottom. Also the soundtrack 👌🏼. It was like a darker, more adult version of The Parent Trap....w/o the hooking up the parents part. Review : Gringo (2018)

I love the outlandish nature of comedy.  It’s amazing how you can take a hopeless protagonist, surround them by the worst people, put them in harrowing situations, and still find ways to make us laugh non-stop.  I hope that the element of comedy never fades out of cinema, and films like Gringo may help keep it alive and well.

Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) is middle-management for Cannabax Technologies, Inc., a company with a game-changing discovery in the weed pill, but also a company facing an impending buyout.  Harold’s bosses, Richard Rusk (Joel Edgerton) and Elaine Markinson (Charlize Theron), in an effort to save their jobs, are leading him along to think his job is safe while trying to cut ties with their illegal drug interest in Mexico.  On top of everything, Richard is sleeping with most everyone involved in the story, including Harold’s wife Bonnie (Thandie Newton).  As things come to a head, Harold finds the pressure mounting, setting forth a series of action, adventures, and monumentally funny moments.

I had no idea that Joel Edgerton had a brother, let along one that directed films.  But, lo and behold, we find that Nash Edgerton has evolved from a stuntman and music video/short film director to making a wildly entertaining feature comedy.  The film is well shot, the comedy beats are played flawlessly and consistently, and the character depravity is a ruthless onslaught of self-serving choices with no regard for the consequences of actions.  There is even a slight bit of meta in the course of the film as Joel Edgerton’s character attempts to involve his film brother (Sharlto Copley) involved in the proceedings, possibly an inside joke of sorts in regards to the relationship of the lead and the director.  The most satisfying aspect of this film, in my opinion, is the way that it is being sold in promotional material versus what you experience in the theaters, as the surprises that unfold yield a deeper enjoyment.

David Oyelowo is surprisingly strong as a comedy lead.  With roles in Selma and The Butler in his repertoire, his ability to play the comedic center of chaotic forces is endearing.  Joel Edgerton plays a good jerk opposite Oyelowo, with Charlize Theron rounding out the lead trio as the alpha dog.  Sharlto Copley turns in another brilliantly oddball performance, furthering his comedy mystique... I expect to see much more of him over the years.  Thandie Newton is strong playing against type, including a wonderful few moments in full prosthetic make-up that she owns to the maximum levels. 

I would say that going into this film knowing as little as possible would provide the most rewarding experience.  Having just seen the trailer set me up enough to go in with expectations that were exceeded all around, and I am happier for it.
