your brothers were upset when they found out you were going to university in california. luke because it would be the first time you would be separated for longer than a weekend. quinn because he couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that his baby sister was growing up and jack because now there was no one for him to get information on you from. 

jack’s reasoning caused a fight between the two of you as you claimed he had no right to control you. jack expected his brothers to agree, which they did, but they also knew how much it meant for you to be your own person. so they sided with you and told jack that he could see you whenever the devils were in town. 

that was a year ago. now luke was starting his sophomore year at the university of michigan. jack was starting his fourth year in the league and quinn his fifth. you were incredibly proud of your brothers and they were proud of you. 

you truly enjoyed being away from your siblings as it allowed you time to be yourself. no one was coming up to you to be your friend because you were quinn and jack hughes younger sister anymore, they wanted to be your friend because they liked you for you. 

albeit being a bit homesick your first year alex and trevor made it easier as they both took turns inviting you to watch their games and then taking you out for dinner or just randomly popping up at your dorm. seeing as alex was your billet brother during his time at the ntdp you were closer to him and hung out with him more often than trevor. 

“you do know that jack asks for a full detailed report on you every day right?” alex asked. the two of you were currently in your apartment as alex helped you get ready for your date. last year, you had many failed dates where the guy either stood you up or used you for your friends or your brothers. 

you chuckled and turned to the older boy. “i know turcs. once over summer he left his phone open to his chat with you and trev and i saw your texts. thanks by the way for not mentioning my multiple failed dates,” 

alex smiled before attacking you in a hug “i only mentioned the time you and quinton hung out because he wanted to know who the guy in your story was,” he defended. you knew all about that interaction. jack had texted you and your other brothers with every piece of information he could find on quinton and claimed he wasn’t good enough for you because he was canadian. 

alex pulled away from the hug and helped adjust your dress and hair before looking at you one last time. “you look gorgeous y/n/n and i’m so glad jack isn’t here cause he would definitely try stop you from going out,” he murmured. 

there was a silence in the room until the doorbell rang. you refused to tell alex who your date was which is why the boy had showed up at your apartment half an hour before you were meant to leave. 

“clarkey?” alex asked as he noticed his teammate. your date, brandt clarke, was a la kings prospect from the 2021 draft. as you spent time with quinton you also grew close to some of the other canadian boys around the area like jordan spence and trevor’s roommates jamie drysdale and mason mctavish.

you’d spent a good chunk of time with them that you spent the first quarter of summer last year in canada with the chl boys. during that time you had to admit that they were slightly better than your brothers friends. and it was during that time that you met brandt. 

seeing as you were the closest in age the two of you spent a lot of time together. brandt didn’t really know who you were but after asking around he couldn’t believe you were y/n hughes and you were standing in front of him. he’d seen you when jack and quinn were being drafted and he’d heard your interviews on luke and he admired the way you spoke about your family. 

“hi alex, is y/n/n here? we’re supposed to go out together. unless i’ve got the date wrong then could you ask her to call me if she’s busy,” brandt rambled on. you thought it was adorable, especially considering the fact that he was turning red. 

it was at that point that you grabbed your purse and headed to the door to greet brandt. “hi clarkey, you look good,” you complimented.

brandt was at a loss for words as he took in your appearance. he had never met someone as effortlessly breathtaking as you. “you look breathtaking,” he whispered. brandt then handed alex the flowers he bought for you before taking your hand.

your date with brandt may have been the first in person date you went on together but over year of knowing each other, the two of you had grown close. you had given him tips on what to do when he came to la and he listened whenever you ranted about a bad date or your brothers.

dating brandt was the best time of your life. you went with him to his first nhl game and watched all his away games on your tv. whenever he was in town the two of you would spend time in your apartment baking or curled up watching tv together. 

one thing you loved about your boyfriend was that he never pushed you. if you were having a bad day he would hold you until you were ready to talk or he would give you the space you asked for. what you really loved was that he wasn’t like your brothers.

you were also grateful for alex during the time of your relationship. he would help you get away with staying with brandt and he would cover for you whenever your brothers saw something on you hanging out with your boyfriend. 

“he wants me to got world juniors with him,” you announced walking into trevor and jamie’s house. it had become a regular thing for you to text the group of boys you were close with and demand they meet when you had a problem.

“clarkey?” “is that problem?” “yay, congratulations!” jamie, alex and trevor exclaimed. you ignored the three of them and flopped onto an empty couch and groaned. “the thing is luke’s playing too and that means jack and quinn are coming,” you explained. 

the boys proved to be no help to your situation as you now sat by the glass in your boyfriends jersey as canada faced off against usa. brandt had flipped you a puck and blown you a kiss before continuing on with his warm ups. just to annoy one of his good friends brennan othmann followed brandt’s actions which earned a slight shove from your boyfriend. 

throughout the tournament you managed to stay away from your brothers when you were with brandt. at first your boyfriend thought you were embarrassed of him but when you explained how overprotective they were he understood and helped you. 

the game had started with the us leading by two points until canada came bacl and tied the game with adam then giving them the lead. you watched with bathed breathe anytime your brother had the puck, you could tell he was tired. but one incident during the game that made you giggle was when luke went for a hit on brandt but your boyfriend retaliated causing luke to fall. 

after a loss to the usa your brothers had all texted asking if you were feeling any better. so maybe you lied to them and said you were sick in the morning so that you could sneak out to support your boyfriend. but your cover was blown the second you ran into brandt’s arms. 

“i swear luke, she was sitting by the glass in a canada jersey,” you heard dylan duke. at the voice you stilled, your boyfriend felt you tense up and looked around to see what happened. and there he saw your family waking directly your way. 

of course, your attempt to stay hidden was thrown away when brennan othmann came running down the hall screaming your name and picked you up. “look at you eh, finally supporting the right country,” otter teased. 

your brothers all stopped talking and looked over at you and the jersey you were wearing. “you’ve got to be kidding me,” jack spat. brennan dropped you immediately and looked at your brothers before giving you an apologetic smile. 

“what’s going on here y/n?” jack pressured. your mother tried interfering, alex had told her all about how your brothers made you feel. luke shook his head in disappointment and quinn just looked upset. 

brandt just wrapped his arm around your waist. the action bringing you more comfort than anyone could imagine, you looked up at your boyfriend as he smiled at you. “this is my boyfriend brandt. we’ve been dating for five months,” 

your boyfriend had already met your parents so they exchanged pleasantries. jack looked your boyfriend up and down before giving you an unimpressed face “you’re dating a hockey player,” 

“yes jack, i’m dating a hockey player. yes, he’s canadian and yes, he does play for the onatrio reign with alex. what else do you want to know huh?” you shot back. 

jack scoffed at brandt’s outstretched arm and turned his attention to your parents. “do you see what happened. i told you we shouldn’t let her go to california now she’s been there a year and she thinks she can run off with some hockey player she’s known for two months,” he stressed. 

“i’ve known brandt since the summer jack. that trip i took to canada that’s when we met and we kept talking to each other until he mentioned being in la for training camp. jack he’s good to me,” you whispered the last part. 

quinn hated the sad look on your face as you tried keeping your tears at bay. he watched as brandt kissed the top of your head as if he knew exactly how you felt. actually, during your whole interaction with jack, quinn noticed how brandt would do small things that seemed to calm you down. 

“you’re too young to have a boyfriend y/n. so next semester you’re going to transfer to umich and you’re going to finish school with luke and his friends. that way we all know where you are and that you aren’t running off with people with unstable positions,” he poked at brandt and grabbed your arm. 

however, you weren’t having it. you pulled your hand out of his grip and held onto brandt’s arms. “i am not letting you take me away from the one person i love,” you argued. 

“fine. then don’t come to the lake house this summer. actually after this you don’t have to talk to me at all. i know you think i’m overprotective y/n so let me save you some trouble, i don’t want to talk to you anymore so don’t even try to contact me,” jack sneered before walking away. 

quinn gave your shoulder a squeeze before running after his younger brother. ellen and jim had both chased after their middle son, the two parents speaking to him in a harsh tone as they berated him for his words. and luke gave you a hug before looking to brandt. 

“look after her,” 

when luke left, you turned to your boyfriend tears silently streaming down your face as he wrapped his arms around you. 

now in front of him, brandt was looking at a little girl who had been banished from one of the people she looked up to.

Andrei Svechnikov: A Primer

BASICS:

Born 26 March 2000 in Barnaul, Russia

Right winger on the Carolina Hurricanes (who drafted him 2nd overall in 2018)

6’2 and 195 lbs

Andrei’s first and foremost a family oriented person. One of the most important people in his life is his brother, Evgeny. He followed Evgeny everywhere, including to Michigan in 2016, where in juniors he played for the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks; near Grand Rapids where Evgeny was playing for the Red Wings AHL affiliate. Svechnikov led the team in scoring and was named to the All-USHL Team and declared USHL Rookie of the Year. He then was selected first overall by the OHL’s Barrie Colts and later won the Emms Family Award as rookie of the year. After being selected 2nd overall by Carolina, he chose the number 37, the same as his brother.

On their childhood: 

“We didn’t have much money,” Evgeny said of their childhood in Siberian Russia. “We ate from the same plate. We did everything together.” “I’ve waited for this my whole life,” Andrei said, sweat still dripping. “It’s my dream. My dream came true.” “It’s huge,” Evgeny said of both the goal and their relationship. “It’s everything.” “They moved from job to job every city,” Evgeny said. “They sacrificed so much for us.” If you ask Evgeny, there was “no doubt” Andrei would make it from the time he started dominating older competition at 5 years old. Evgeny was 8 when he fostered that opinion. Clearly he was on to something. (X)

The brothers have a special handshake and Evgeny wears a bracelet Andrei gave him everyday.

In the NHL:

Andrei made NHL history being the first player to ever score a lacrosse style goal. Seen here.

And is the only player (so far) to do two successfully.

But he can do tricks off the ice too. His first few years on the Hurricanes, he enjoyed learning magic tricks. Here's one with former beat reporter Sara Civian.

Andrei is loved by many, if not most, current and former teammates, coaches, media, and more. 

Praise from others: 

“I’m just proud of the kid in general,” Brind’Amour said after his first win as coach and Svechnikov’s first point. “He’s a great kid. He wants to learn and he’s got a lot to learn, but he’s going to be a great player in this league. You gotta remember how young he is, and that’s something I have to keep reminding myself. He’s just a kid, and he’s out there in the NHL and he doesn’t look out of place. We’re very fortunate to have him.”

Former Muskegon Lumberjacks GM John Vanbiesbrouck once told me he didn’t want to drop a bomb too soon, but yeah, he could see hints of Gordie Howe in a young Svechnikov. Vanbiesbrouck was more comfortable with a comparison to Todd Bertuzzi. “You know what? He’s hard to compare to anyone because there’s not a lot of guys like him,” he said after Svechnikov’s NHL debut. “Because sometimes he drives the net or sometimes he’ll see a play. He’s so multi-talented. When he drives the net — Todd Bertuzzi, one of the best net-drivers I’ve ever seen. He’s got an acute way to make plays and find lanes and shoot in place. There’s not a lot of guys like him in that way and how he can play a speed game, then a slowed-down game.”

Here's a snippet of a very heart felt interview the Svechnikov brothers gave before their first match up.

What’s his best quality as a person? Evgeny: Humble. Humble, shyness, respectful. There’s not just one word. But one thing (that) comes in my head, humble and respect(ful), of anything: parents, people around, polite. Just a good kid, man. He’s just a good kid. Andrei: I feel like he’s just a kind person — he’s always going to care about you, he’s always going to ask you if something’s wrong. He’s a culture guy. But obviously he gets a little emotional sometimes (laughter) … He’s gotta work on that a little bit, probably. When have you been the proudest of him? Evgeny: Just one thing? … That he doesn’t let himself get down, and anything happens, nothing stops him. But I think he learned that from me (laughs). And yeah, he doesn’t give up and he keeps going. Nothing bothers him, and he’s like a tractor, just keeps going, and I’m telling you, he learned that from me. Andrei: Every day, to be honest. Every day I am proud of him, to be completely honest. He’s been through a lot, there have been a lot of hard things. He was injured, now he’s here in the show. It’s going to be fun to play against him. I’m proud of him every day. Anything else you want to add about him? Evgeny: That I love him so much. He’s a great brother. Andrei: I don’t know, really — did he say anything interesting? The Athletic: He said he loves you so much and that you’re a great brother. Andrei: I love him so much, too. He is my hero.

Friends on the team:

When he first joined the Hurricanes, Andrei became good friends with Dougie Hamilton and Warren Foegele. They all lived in the same building and new to the team. The Hurricanes even made a video of them hanging out and talking about their friendship called the “Three Amigos.”

Even after both Dougie and Warren were traded to other teams, he remains good friends with them. (X)

**Fun fact: Both Dougie and Warren had to pick new numbers with their new teams. Dougie, formerly #19, picked 7, (at the time, Pavel Zacha already took #37) and Warren, formerly #13,  picked 37.

Andrei has always been good friends with alternate captain, Jordan Martinook. Taken under Marty’s wing from the start in 2018 when they both joined the team, Jordan has a pre-game tunnel tradition to scream Andrei’s last name to hype them up. Martinook will occasionally add in other players but he always exaggerates ‘Mista Svechnikov’ the most. Like another older brother figure, Martinook enjoys messing with Andrei in practice and in general.

After Dougie and Warren were traded, Andrei became closer with Martin Necas. Always good friends, they started going out to eat together more and attended the US Open Men’s Final in 2023.

With Seth Jarvis joining the team, Andrei gained the opportunity to be the "big brother" for once. Pulling pranks and messing around with Jarvy.

Another player who’s allowed Andrei the opportunity to grow as a leader on the team is Pyotr Kochetkov, fellow Russian and a goalie. The two have become good friends, Andrei acting as a guide and translator. 

Andrei loves Carolina, and Carolina loves Andrei. One of the many reasons he agreed to an eight-year, $62 million contract with the Hurricanes in 2021.

Andrei has always loved animals. He’s good with both cats and dogs, looking forward to the annual calendar photoshoot, and adopting one of his own in 2023.

Andrei has never met a penalty box he didn’t like.

“I just love that style. Just hit hard, you know?,” Svechnikov said. “I think I’m playing a hard game, and that’s why I think I’m scoring goals. I’m gonna hit, then I’m gonna go to the offensive zone and someone’s going to give it to me and then I try and shoot it into the net. Good tries for me. I love that style of play.” (X)

He made the 2023 All Star Game, winning the Fastest Skater competition. The first person he called after was his brother.

He suffered a tear in his left ACL a couple months later, and missed the rest of the season and playoffs. However, he had fun sounding the siren and joining his good friends in the broadcast booth. He had a successful surgery and is recovering well, hoping to start the 2023-2024 season on the right foot.

STATS No Flyer had a hat trick in the 2023-24 season. The four listed have: Konecny: two hat tricks over the course of his NHL career. Foerster: none at the NHL level, but had two with the Barrie Colts in 2019 and 2022. Tippett: one at the NHL level. Michkov: had two hat tricks playing for the Russian U-18 team against Germany and Czechia.

Harley-Foerster primer

Making my case for why you should ship these two rookies

Tyson Foerster

He’s a rookie on the Flyers with really excellent advanced stats, whatever that means. He had a slow start to his season, but he stayed positive, and he recently hit his stride. Lately he’s been scoring a ton of goals:

All of his cellies are just him flinging his arms up in the air in pure joy. He is almost always smiling.

He cares about his teammates and doesn't like beating them even in pointless competitions.

In this clip, Tyson wins a meaningless accuracy shooting competition against Cam York and a few other Flyers. When asked how it feels, Tyson answers "not good, he's my teammate." We love a professional athlete who just wants to have fun with the boys.

When he isn't smiling, he's extremely expressive:

He has a well-documented history of frolicking

Also one time he dressed up as a playboy bunny. How that alone has not yet launched 1000 fics, I do not know.

So: Tyson Foerster is a sweet ball of sunshine and an A+ goal scorer, secure in himself and his masculinity.

Thomas Harley

From Syracuse NY, he’s the star (heh) rookie defenseman of the Dallas Stars. 

We love him because he's a total babe and also very good at hockey.

He was highlighted on the NHL Network for leap year as a player who's taken a bit leap forward.

drysdalc on Twitter created a dizzying fan edit of him scoring goals and running his hands through his hair, if you'd like further justification.

Personality-wise, The Athletic said the following:

"Harley has always been a soft-spoken individual, especially in front of the microphone. There’s a looser version of him, one who picks playful fights with Wyatt Johnston in practices and during warmups, as he did on Saturday. But the most impressive thing about Harley has always been his maturity."

Sometimes he looks a bit deer-in-the-headlights during interviews. In my opinion this only adds to his charm.

Foerster/Harley

I hope I've convinced you that they're both at the very least plausibly nice boys. But why the two of them together?

I invite you to cast your thoughts back to September 27th, 2019. Harley is a recent draftee of the Dallas Stars. He played a few pre-season games, then was sent back to the Mississauga Steelheads of the OHL.

He gets off the plane and immediately plays a game against the Oshawa Generals, which he loses 5-6. The very next day, he plays another game, this time against the Barrie Colts. Thomas's team loses again, 7-3.

That season, Tyson Foerster was playing on the Colts. In that 7-3 game, Tyson recorded 6 points, including 3 goals.

"Foerster put himself squarely on the draft map on a late September day against the Mississauga Steelheads. He recorded six points including a hat trick. Then he went on a crazy point streak recording points in 13 straight games which including six consecutive multi-point efforts." - The Athletic

See? Huge deal for Foerster, and he got there by absolutely grinding Thomas's team into the dirt.

Thomas responded aggressively the next time their teams played each other, on 12/20/2019. In that game, Harley recorded two points and two assists, and the Steelheads beat the Colts 8-2. They played a few more times, including an overtime win for the Colts and an 8-1 Steelheads win.

After that season, Harley and Foerster didn't face each other again, as they both spent time in the minors. But this year, they're full time with their respective clubs. The Flyers and Stars have played two games this year.

The first, on October 21st, 2023, went to overtime. The Stars won 4-5. Tyson got a couple of shots on goal but neither player was particularly decisive.

The teams faced each other again on January 18th, 2024, AKA Tyson's 22nd birthday. This time, to the shock of basically everyone, the Flyers beat the absolute shit out of the Stars—but it took them a little while to get there.

As the second period was winding down, the Flyers were only up by 1. The shots differential was dramatically worse, at one point  28–3 in favor of the Flyers.

In the final minute of the 2nd period, Thomas high-sticked Tyson in the face. Miraculously, the Flyers scored on the associated power play, and it only got worse from there. The final tally was 1-5 in favor of the Flyers. Arguably, the Harley/Foerster penalty was the beginning of the end.

To summarize:

9/27/19: Thomas Harley plays 5 pre-season games with the stars and gets sent down back to Mississauga  9/28/19: Foerster’s Colts win 7-3 against Harley’s Mississauga, Tyson Foerster gets 6 points including a hat trick  12/20/19: The Colts play Sauga again, Mississauga wins 8-2 and Thomas gets a hat trick  2023–2024: Thomas Harley and Tyson Foerster are finally up with their respective teams for the season.  10/21/2023: Harley and Foerster play their first game against each other in the NHL. Neither of them does anything particularly of note.  1/18/2024: Harley and Foerster play their second game against each other in the NHL. Thomas highsticks Tyson at the end of the 2nd, arguably costing the Stars the game. Oh, and it’s Tyson’s 22nd birthday. 

In conclusion, you should ship them because:

sunshine-quiet is a fun pairing

their games against each other, while few, have a lot of drama

they're both very cute

edit 4/22/24: additional information has surfaced for me personally, which is that Tyson's roommate Joel Farabee is a longtime friend of Thomas Harley. This is very important and relevant information that everyone should know.

brandt/luke: a primer

i'm gonna be super honest, there's nothing that's prompting this. it's quite literally self-indulgent for me to archive their interactions before i forget them all!

so hello ! welcome ! if you're here, i presume you're clicking because you're like 'what the fuck is this, luke hughes and who now?' and yeah that would be me too if i didn't know the background information

but it exists!!! and it has spiralled far beyond my wildest dreams and become an actual Thing that i would consider one of the ships i ride the HARDEST for!!!!!! that i have somehow convinced my closest friends to also ride for, which is the biggest accomplishment for a ship, as we all know

here's who the ship consists of:

luke hughes!

(sorry he looks cursed but this is not a post about how attractive he is)

he was the 4th overall pick in the 2021 draft or smth, no big deal, just comes from an extremely talented hockey family and plays with his brother in new jersey now. used to play at the university of michigan, which unfortunately is an important setting for many, many rarepair ships. don't know if there are really any fun facts about him but he used to model for american eagle and got made fun of for that

anyways here's the second person in the ship, brandt clarke !

8th overall pick to the la kings, former don mills flyer with shane wright and brennan othmann, former barrie colts captain, friends with jack quinn, etc etc. you may actually know him from that time he tried to jump the glass and fight a fan in the stands, i think that video went p viral on hockey twitter. the most important thing you know though is that he has more attitude and swagger in his pinky finger than the majority of people have in their whole BODY

so let's venture back to 2022, and how this all started, with a conversation between me and @fifthovertime about the greater toronto area and its hockey connections

toronto, as many might know, is considered a hockey hotbed, due to its abundance of minor hockey teams. it's where a lot of nhl players come from, and where a lot of players call home and return to in the summers.

luke, prior to moving to michigan with his parents and brothers so quinn could play with the ntdp, used to live in toronto while his dad worked for the leafs. at this time, there were a lot of other young budding stars in the area, brandt clarke included. he'd moved down from ottawa to play on a minor midget team in toronto, the don mills flyers, which was rival minor hockey team to luke's. however, since the toronto hockey scene was so tight (and because brandt's older brother was playing with luke's on the same team), they would periodically see each other and play pond hockey together. as kids do.

this is what i like to call interaction #1. of course, it's really just brandt retelling a story, but it's the first time i heard about any sort of friendship between the hughes brothers and the clarkes. very wholesome, you can tell brandt really has a hero complex for luke and jack, it's frankly adorable.

and if you go back, you can even see that brandt was a really supportive friend! he commented on luke’s commitment post to umich and luke liked the comment, at the time

but they’re not friends. no, i’d call them far from that. because slowly....you can start to see that hatred is building........because brandt starts to know he's good enough to go fourth overall. and he would love to go to a team with his brother on it.....but there's another brother standing in the way of that.

he doesn't speak about luke in particular in this interview, but he definitely talks about njd as if he doesn't think it's a realistic option for him

at this point then, the narrative is pretty clear. it was once a friendship, that slipped away from both of them because of distance, and although brandt once had reverence for it, he’s soured on the idea. he wishes he could be good enough to play with his brother too. he hates that luke hughes is good enough at hockey to do it. luke to him is less so an extension of his brothers, but an obstacle for brandt to overcome, an obstacle that stands in the way of everything he wants.

but so far it’s been pretty one sided…right? it’s all kind of just been brandt’s feelings toward luke, right?

i soooo wish i had the video for this (screw tsn for wiping their archives so often) BUT TRUST WHEN I WATCHED IT FOR THE FIRST TIME I AUDIBLY GASPED.

he said it with so much fucking snark, and an EYE ROLL. the inflappable luke hughes, who has seemingly never let an opponent get in the way of him and his friends having fun and kicking ass at the same time, is bothered by a dig from brandt clarke. that didn't even mention him directly! that was more about techniques of the game than it was about the usa players! "he can say what he wants", but he didn't even say anything about YOU

genuinely, i will thank mark masters for bringing this up with luke forever, he's so valid for that, he knew we needed this narrative.

what's even better is that THE NEXT DAY during the semi-final? guess who scores the game-winning goal. and guess who just happens to be flopping like a fish on the ice during it, trying to prevent it from going in.

and thus brandt/luke is born! as taylor describes it as, it is bitch ass cunt (luke) for cunt ass bitch (brandt). they are each other's equals and opposites. they're both cocky and sure of themselves and can give it as good as it gets, and what they like about each other is what happens when that is stripped away. they are undoubtedly MY favourite luke hughes narrative, and the only one i feel truly captures his narrative essence, away from his brothers. sure, others are cute and i can see where people are coming from, but nothing gets luke as much as this gets luke.

this is luke, unfiltered, and it's only brandt that can bring it out of him.
