NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? There's also a number of guys who would fit in nicely but are free agents and the chances of signing them are not high (i.e. Alex Ovechkin).  EXPANSION DRAFT: Date, time, rules & more for Seattle Kraken team selectionRegardless of what Francis, coach Dave Hakstrol and Co. end up doing, there's a good chance the Kraken will be a playoff contender in just their first season. For now, let the intrigue and the guessing WWRFD (that's: what will Ron Francis do?) begin. Here's a look at every player they can pick.

In Denmark, Harsh New Laws for Immigrant ‘Ghettos’
By Ellen Barry and Martin Selsoe Sorensen, NY Times, July 1, 2018
COPENHAGEN--When Rokhaia Naassan gives birth in the coming days, she and her baby boy will enter a new category in the eyes of Danish law. Because she lives in a low-income immigrant neighborhood described by the government as a “ghetto,” Rokhaia will be what the Danish newspapers call a “ghetto parent” and he will be a “ghetto child.”
Starting at the age of 1, “ghetto children” must be separated from their families for at least 25 hours a week, not including nap time, for mandatory instruction in “Danish values,” including the traditions of Christmas and Easter, and Danish language. Noncompliance could result in a stoppage of welfare payments. Other Danish citizens are free to choose whether to enroll children in preschool up to the age of six.
Denmark’s government is introducing a new set of laws to regulate life in 25 low-income and heavily Muslim enclaves, saying that if families there do not willingly merge into the country’s mainstream, they should be compelled.
For decades, integrating immigrants has posed a thorny challenge to the Danish model, intended to serve a small, homogeneous population. Leaders are focusing their ire on urban neighborhoods where immigrants, some of them placed there by the government, live in dense concentrations with high rates of unemployment and gang violence.
Politicians’ description of the ghettos has become increasingly sinister. In his annual New Year’s speech, Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen warned that ghettos could “reach out their tentacles onto the streets” by spreading violence, and that because of ghettos, “cracks have appeared on the map of Denmark.” Politicians who once used the word “integration” now call frankly for “assimilation.”
That tough approach is embodied in the “ghetto package.” Of 22 proposals presented by the government in early March, most have been agreed upon by a parliamentary majority, and more will be subject to a vote in the fall.
Some are punitive: One measure under consideration would allow courts to double the punishment for certain crimes if they are committed in one of the 25 neighborhoods classified as ghettos, based on residents’ income, employment status, education levels, number of criminal convictions and “non-Western background.” Another would impose a four-year prison sentence on immigrant parents who force their children to make extended visits to their country of origin--described here as “re-education trips” --in that way damaging their “schooling, language and well-being.” Another would allow local authorities to increase their monitoring and surveillance of “ghetto” families.
Some proposals have been rejected as too radical, like one from the far-right Danish People’s Party that would confine “ghetto children” to their homes after 8 p.m. (Challenged on how this would be enforced, Martin Henriksen, the chairman of Parliament’s integration committee, suggested in earnest that young people in these areas could be fitted with electronic ankle bracelets.)
At this summer’s Folkemodet, an annual political gathering on the island of Bornholm, the justice minister, Soren Pape Poulsen, shrugged off the rights-based objection.
“Some will wail and say, ‘We’re not equal before the law in this country,’ and ‘Certain groups are punished harder,’ but that’s nonsense,” he said, adding that the increased penalties would affect only people who break the law.
To those claiming the measures single out Muslims, he said: “That’s nonsense and rubbish. To me this is about, no matter who lives in these areas and who they believe in, they have to profess to the values required to have a good life in Denmark.”
Yildiz Akdogan, a Social Democrat whose parliamentary constituency includes Tingbjerg, which is classified as a ghetto, said Danes had become so desensitized to harsh rhetoric about immigrants that they no longer register the negative connotation of the word “ghetto” and its echoes of Nazi Germany’s separation of Jews.
“We call them ‘ghetto children, ghetto parents,’ it’s so crazy,” Ms. Akdogan said. “It is becoming a mainstream word, which is so dangerous. People who know a little about history, our European not-so-nice period, we know what the word ‘ghetto’ is associated with.”
She pulled out her phone to display a Facebook post from a right-wing politician, railing furiously at a Danish supermarket for selling a cake reading “Eid Mubarak,” for the Muslim holiday of Eid. “Right now, facts don’t matter so much, it’s only feelings,” she said. “This is the dangerous part of it.”
For their part, many residents of Danish “ghettos” say they would move if they could afford to live elsewhere. On a recent afternoon, Ms. Naassan was sitting with her four sisters in Mjolnerparken, a four-story, red brick housing complex that is, by the numbers, one of Denmark’s worst ghettos: forty-three percent of its residents are unemployed, 82 percent come from “non-Western backgrounds,” 53 percent have scant education and 51 percent have relatively low earnings.
The Naassan sisters wondered aloud why they were subject to these new measures. The children of Lebanese refugees, they speak Danish without an accent and converse with their children in Danish; their children, they complain, speak so little Arabic that they can barely communicate with their grandparents. Years ago, growing up in Jutland, in Denmark’s west, they rarely encountered any anti-Muslim feeling, said Sara, 32.
“Maybe this is what they always thought, and now it’s out in the open,” she said. “Danish politics is just about Muslims now. They want us to get more assimilated or get out. I don’t know when they will be satisfied with us.”
Rokhaia, her due date fast approaching, flared with anger at the mandatory preschool program approved by the government last month: Already, she said, her daughter was being taught so much about Christmas in kindergarten that she came home begging for presents from Santa Claus.
By focusing heavily on the collective cost of supporting refugee and immigrant families, the Danish People’s Party has won many voters away from the center-left Social Democrats, who had long been seen as the defenders of the welfare state. With a general election approaching next year, the Social Democrat party has shifted to the right on immigration, saying tougher measures are necessary to protect the welfare state.
Nearly 87 percent of Denmark’s 5.7 million people are of Danish descent, with immigrants and their descendants accounting for the rest. Two-thirds of the immigrants, around half a million, are from Muslim backgrounds, a group that swelled with the waves of Afghan, Iraqi and Syrian refugees crossing Europe.
Critics would say “the state cannot force children away from their parents in the daytime, that’s disproportionate use of force,” said Rune Lykkeberg, the editor in chief of Dagbladet Information, a left-liberal daily newspaper. “But the Social Democrats say, ‘We give people money, and we want something for this money.’ This is a system of rights and obligations.”
Danes have a high level of trust in the state, including as a central shaper of children’s ideology and beliefs, he said. “The Anglo-Saxon conception is that man is free in nature, and then comes the state” constraining that freedom, he said. “Our conception of freedom is the opposite, that man is only free in society.”
“You could say, of course, parents have the right to bring up their own kids,” he added. “We would say they do not have the right to destroy the future freedom of their children.”
Of course, he added, “There is always a strong sense of authoritarian risk.”
Ms. Hussain, the high school student from Tingbjerg, is accustomed to anti-immigrant talk surging ahead of elections, but says this year it is harsher than she can ever remember.
“If you create new kinds of laws that apply to only one part of society, then you can keep adding to them,” she said. “It will turn into the parallel society they’re so afraid of. They will create it themselves.”

″One Denmark Without Parallel Society: No Ghettos in 2030″: An Event Analysis
Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the Prime Minister of Denmark, and other Danish politicians have been vocal with their opinions toward the immigrant ghettos in their country. “Ghetto” is a term used by Danish authorities to define neighborhoods with “a uniform population that often has a particular ethnic background or is from a particular community class” (Gram, 2018). The Danish Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing has a list of districts, Ghettolisten, that includes 30 different areas in Denmark that are considered to be ghettos. A neighborhood is included on the Ghettolisten if it has at least three of the five criteria for unemployment, education, income, crime, and ethnic origin (Nørgaard, 2018). Because sociocultural issues are so highly politicized in Denmark (Rydgren, 2010), the ghettos have become a concern to the well-being of the country. This led the Danish government to propose a plan with 22 initiatives that will “do away with parallel communities” by 2030 (Nørgaard, 2018). This program was announced at the beginning of 2018 by Rasmussen himself and passed by the Folketing in March of the same year. With this plan, Denmark aims to eradicate the ghettos that are filled with crime and populated by poor, uneducated immigrants from non-Western countries who refuse to integrate into Danish society (Ngo, 2018).
In his annual New Year’s speech, reports The New York Times, the Prime Minister warned “the people” that Denmark’s ghettos were spreading violence onto the streets. Rasmussen also said that, because of the ghettos, “cracks have appeared on the map of Denmark” (Barry & Selsoe Sorensen, 2018). This metaphor made its way across the country, alarming the Danes and making them believe they were in danger. The Prime Minister used his authoritative platform to convince the Danes that ghettos are damaging to Danish society because the non-Western people living in them are disrespecting their values. His ability to mobilize, or engage a wide range of individuals to raise awareness of a particular problem (Mudde & Kaltwasser, 2017, p. 42), gave him the support he needed to bring this issue to the government. Preserving national and European cultural identity is important to the Danes, and Rasmussen made them think the ghettos were in opposition to their society (Bakkær Simonsen, 2016).
The 22 initiatives found in the plan, titled “One Denmark Without Parallel Society: No Ghettos in 2030,” are divided into five themes: physical demolition and conversion of vulnerable residential areas, more robust management of who can live in vulnerable residential areas, strengthened police efforts and higher penalties must fight crime and create more security, a good start to life for all children and young people, and the government following up on efforts against parallel communities (Regeringen, 2018). Denmark plans to spend DKK 12 billion on demolishing and converting the ghettos and has set rules to make vulnerable residential areas safer to live in  (Nørgaard, 2018). Other initiatives include having higher penalties in specific areas, better distribution of students in educational institutions, and having ghetto representatives constantly observing the ghettos (Regeringen, 2018). Although “One Denmark Without Parallel Society: No Ghettos in 2030″ seems well-thought-out, the plan is doing more to ensure the safety of the Danes than help the immigrants who are living in those ghettos.

Congrats @barryschwabsky & @tbradway LANDSCAPE PAINTING NOW reviewed @hyperallergic “Art critic Barry Schwabsky’s new book, “Landscape Painting Now: From Pop Abstraction to New Romanticism” (DAP), delivers a global and multi-generational perspective on what may be the most malleable of painting genres. Along with editor Todd Bradway and historians Robert R. Shane, Louise Sorensen, and Susan A. Van Scoy, Schwabsky sets out to update readers on what artists have been doing with the pliable clay of landscape painting since 1950. With a specific focus on paintings completed since 2000, a view unfolds of a genre that earned only sporadic attention from critics while its practitioners were busy expanding, redefining, and generally complicating the form… Readers will be left with the question: can landscape painting retain its distinction as a genre, or is it doomed to drift toward Jackson Pollock’s “I am nature” paean to solipsism? For those invested in such inquiry, I suggest post-it markers placed at the pages where they feel the author’s inclusiveness led him adrift. For that participatory exercise alone, above and beyond the volume’s intelligence and visual sumptuousness, I believe ‘Landscape Painting Now’ could play a significant role in our conversations about contemporary painting and its meaning.” — Peter Malone #landscapepainting #landscapepaintingnow @landscape_painting_now #pleinairpainting #pleinair #figurativepainting #nature #contemporarylandscapepainting #postpoplandscapes https://www.instagram.com/p/BvRkN-bHePu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vb377eb9c2vi

In Denmark, Harsh New Laws for Immigrant ‘Ghettos’
Tumblr media
By ELLEN BARRY and MARTIN SELSOE SORENSEN The Danes, who have struggled to integrate non-Western families, are getting tough: From age 1, immigrant children will receive mandatory instruction in “Danish culture.” Published: July 1, 2018 at 05:30AM from NYT World https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/01/world/europe/denmark-immigrant-ghettos.html?partner=IFTTT via ClusterAssets Inc., https://ClusterAssets.wordpress.com

CHILD'S PLAY (1988)
A shoot out between the Lakeshore Strangler - Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) - and Chicago detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) ends with the former getting hit. Dying and desperate, the killer manages to take shelter in a nearby toy store. As Mike closes in, Charles gets his hands on a doll and begins reciting a Latin incantation. Before Mike can find him, a lightning bolt strikes the store and destroys it, though the detective survives the blast. Some time later, young Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent)’s birthday has arrived and all he wants is a Good Guy Doll, the latest toy craze. Though his mother Karen (Catherine Hicks) is initially unable to find one, she's finally sold one by a peddler (Juan Ramirez) and takes it home. Andy immediately adores the doll, Chucky, though things go horribly wrong as Karen's friend Maggie (Dinah Manoff) is killed and thrown from their apartment window. Investigating the death, Mike begins to suspect Andy, the only other person present. As more bodies begin to turn up, the police become convinced that Andy is responsible or at least somehow involved. But Karen soon discovers that Chucky is alive, possessed by the soul of Charles Lee Ray, and that Andy is his next target.
In an era of inhuman murderers (Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers) and supernatural beings (Freddy Krueger, Pinhead), Child's Play gave us something different. While killer dolls were nothing new to horror (the Zuni Fetish Doll from Trilogy of Terror and Talky Tina from The Twilight Zone were notable monsters earlier in the same genre), writer Don Mancini and director Tom Holland (of Fright Night fame) brought us a far more fleshed out monster than previous attempts. He wasn't just some mindlessly evil living toy of unknown origins, the way he had reached such a state was integral to the film's plot, and in fact the entire series. A truly nasty individual, Chucky is portrayed perfectly by Oscar-winning actor Brad Dourif. Though he appears briefly at the start as serial killer Charles Lee Ray, Dourif soon disappears from the screen and becomes nothing but a voice emanating from the Chucky doll, providing a wonderfully sinister, darkly humorous performance. The animatronics used to bring Chucky to life are also impressive, not only providing close ups of him emoting and talking, but also shots of the killer doll's entire body moving about in full view. The special effects, combined with Brad Dourif's performance, results in one of the screen's most memorable horror villains.
Catherine Hicks turns in a solid performance as Karen Barclay, the panic-stricken mother of the film's young protagonist, Andy. While she desparately wants to believe her son, as any mother would, she also realizes how insane it sounds as he tries to tell everyone that his doll is alive. Chris Sarandon is a little one note as aloof cop Mike Norris, but he's still likeable enough as a lead. Mike's partner Jack never really adds anything to the movie, and Dr. Ardmore is a classic a-hole who never believes the kid's/hero's warning and ultimately pays the price. Easily the star of the show, however, is Alex Vincent as child protagonist Andy Barclay. Vincent's performance as Andy is a rarity, not just in horror movies, but in movies period. Andy isn't perfect, making a scary breakfast in bed for Karen, and possesses a lot of qualities that children have in real life. But never once is Andy annoying, nor does he ever make things worse for the other characters. Not only that, we feel sorry for him as he tries to warn everyone about his doll's terrible secret. It never feels like he's acting either, which is another huge plus. In fact, he's downright likeable. The scenes in which he lets out a quiet, horrified "Stop! Stop..." as he watches Chucky kill Dr. Ardmore, or when he sobs "He's coming to kill me..." when he sees Chucky approaching his window, are honestly heart wrenching. Thankfully, Vincent would return in Child's Play 2.
Chucky was the last of the major 1980s horror icons to make their debut and the killer doll instantly struck a chord with fans. While his quest for vengeance against Andy Barclay would eventually taper off, his thirst for blood would remain strong, and Chucky would return six more times to terrorize anyone standing in his way, gaining a stronger resolve, a frightening new appearance, and even a family.

10 young Championship stars to watch in the season ahead
The new Sky Bet Championship campaign is imminent and it promises to be another fascinating season in the second layer.
Another hectic race to win promotion for the Premier League is virtually guaranteed, while the fight to prevent the drop will probably also be fascinating.
Amid the madness, there are opportunities to make rising stars shine and we watch 10 champion players 21 or younger to keep an eye on.
Jamie Shackleton (Leeds United)
Nothing makes the fanbase of a club more proud than a local boy who rises through the ranks of the academy and seizes his chance in the first team.
That's exactly what 19-year-old Shackleton did at Leeds United last season, aided by the dedication of manager Marcelo Bielsa to give Thorp Arch academics their chance.
The Argentinian manager is known as an obsessive detail on and off the field, so it comes as no surprise that he has successfully turned Shackleton from a midfielder-playing ball into reserves in a looting right back.
Now he is equally skilled in both positions and offers the energetic game that Bielsa demands, and the international appearance under 20 in England will be crucial if Leeds sets up a new promotion challenge.
Local boy Jamie Shackleton hopes to build a positive breakthrough season in Leeds
Matt O & Riley (Fulham)
The Fulham Academy rightly has an excellent reputation, and they return to the championship, it's the perfect opportunity for a few more prospects to get their chance.
One of the most exciting is the 18-year-old midfielder O & Riley, who has made a handful of performances for the first team in recent years, mainly in the EFL Cup.
Although Fulham has gathered a powerful forward line insisting on an immediate return of the Premier League, Scott Parker manages to depend on an insured midfielder.
The versatility and creativity of the teenager will hopefully mean that he will knock on the door of the first team more often.
Matt O & # 39; Riley has a handful of first team games played for Fulham and hopes for more
Rekeem Harper (West Bromwich Albion)
West Brom will be happy to bind the 19-year-old Harper to a new three-year contract after Tottenham and Celtic reportedly circled for him at the end of last season.
Harper already has a lot of first team experience with the Baggies and, with something of a mid-summer exodus with Gareth Barry, James Morrison and Wes Hoolahan leaving, he should get more.
After joining West Brom at the age of 12, nder-19 international has a chance to inspire efforts to return to Premier League under new manager Slaven Bilic.
pursues Rekeem Harper, 19, committed to West Brom with a new contract while pursuing playing time
Mads Bech Sorensen (Brentford)
Brentford raised many eyebrows in favor of withdrawing their traditional academy structure in favor of from a continental B team in 2016 but it is beginning to bear fruit.
Danish defender Mads Bech Sorensen, 20, seems most likely to make the permanent move to a Brentford team, some tipping the dark horses for promotion.
Injuries within the team allowed Sorensen first team chances at the end of last season and he certainly looked at the part.
Since then, Yoann Barbet and Ezri Konsa have left Griffin Park, giving Sorensen the chance to take.
Mads Bech Sorensen on the ball for Brentford his first team references
Kieran Dowell (Derby County on loan from Everton)
Frank Lampard's Derby County last season when she lost to Aston Villa in the championship final
Again, there is a change of manager at the club and the incoming Phillip Cocu has promised to help the young players in his team develop.
Last year's success story was 18-year-old right back Jayden Bogle, who made 50 appearances in all that had never before played in the first team.
This time it is 21-year-old attacking midfielder Dowell, who has joined Everton on the Championship side.
Dowell, who has played for the Toffees five times, brings a wealth of Championship experience for his tender years on loan to Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United.
Kieran Dowell will be next season loaned to Derby from parent club Everton
Juninho Bacuna (Huddersfield Town)
The reality of degradation of the Premier League bit this summer in Huddersfield, where trimming the team looks more like an exodus.
It means Jan Siewert takes a team with a youthful complexion into battle, with a 21-year-old central midfielder Juninho Bacuna to watch.
He may sound Brazilian, but he actually comes from Groningen in the Netherlands and is a Dutch under -21 international.
Bacuna gave a good report of himself towards the end of last season and the move to the championship should provide an even greater showcase of his talents.
Dutch midfielder Juninho Bacuna plays in a youthful Huddersfield team this season
Michael Olise (1945) Reading)
The experts tip Reading for another season of problems, but a bright spot of the coming season could well be the rise of 17-year-old Frenchman Olise.
Royals Academy, he made his first team debut in a 3-0 home loss against Leeds United in March and then played three more championship games.
Olise has an advanced midfield role and has excellent footwork and a good eye for a defense-splitting pass
He spent the early part of the summer playing for France in the Toulon Tournament, but is also eligible to represent England or Nigeria.

'Get him on the bench against Fulham' - These NUFC fans react to announcement about teenage ace
Newcastle United fans have been on social media reacting to the news that Elias Sorensen has been nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Season award.
And a number have called on head coach Rafael Benitez to hand the centre-forward some first-team minutes against Fulham in the Premier League this weekend.
Sorensen is yet to make his first-team bow for the Magpies, but has scored 20 times this season – including 12 in the Premier League 2.
The 19-year-old actually joined Blackpool on loan during the January transfer window, but made just one league appearance for the club before being recalled.
It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with the Denmark Under-21 international at the end of the season.
But there are some Newcastle fans thinking about the here and now, with a selection hoping to see Sorensen feature away to Fulham on Sunday afternoon in what is a pretty meaningless fixture.
A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:
Bench him next week and bring him on 80th minute I reckon
