How do you feel about the new voice actors for Camp Camp?
I...Really don't like them. Like Gwen, I don't know why the voice actor left, I know they say that the three got replaced for representation, but replacing Gwen makes LITERALLY NO SENSE since she's not even going to be in the new season!
And then for Max, I get it, again representation, but he's already such a character. Plus, Micheal still works for Rooster Teeth, so I feel like it would have worked better if he had at least done this episode, and THEN got replaced for the next season if they really had to, and they could say he went through puberty or something.
Nerris I can't really tell because she hardly spoke, but another issue I have with Gwen and Max's voice actors is that they sound like robots. It's like this is their first jobs voice acting.
I think for Max it's almost definitely because the new voice actor is TRYING to sound like Micheal, like really trying.....I don't think it's working.
Thoughts?
Tldr I don't think the VAs are necessarily bad and can be judged completely soley on this episode. Max new VA could do really well if he talked faster and tried less sounding just like Michael. Gwen sometimes sounds too nice and monotonous and sometimes nails annoyed and tired w shit gwen. Nerris sound definitely different but not bad when not scratchy. Recasting for representation reason is understandable but it threw everyone off w new voices after 4 seasons of getting used to these characters.
Edit: adding the video cos its crazy how it improved max talking at ×1.25 speed
youtube
Hmmm well first I always think most important thing of a VA is being able to be expressive as the character. And then ofc there's if you look at that character you think this VA goes well w it.
Tho think especially hard to get used to the new VA when we've heard them for 4 whole seasons. Also i think this episode writing was also kinda awkward w the way the characters speaking or not expect the characters to say. Like for max
"Excuse me! Another betrayal"
"Woooooooow"
"Hear that, they love it. What would they do without us"
Actually someone mentioned max is talking too slow which makes it sound more off just like w that last quote.
You know putting max at faster speed at ×1.25 he sounds good like in alot of them! I'm wondering if they slowed him down or the VA really did talk slowly; so weird (I'm not over it)
Even went back for gwen on some parts and she could also talk a lil faster to sound better.
I think for max you are in somewhat right he's trying hard to sound like max, but i think emotion wise he does have potential if he just well wasn't trying hard to mimic "usual max". You can hear it especially when max annoyed like
"Nothing, I'm having a great time"
"Neil what did she just tell you to do"
"You have no idea how depressing that is do you. Don't worry kid you'll be happy at some point"
So i think as you said if the new VA just stops trying hard to mimic Michel (probably as you said excuse w puberty) I think he'll turn out well. (And if he talked faster lol)
For gwen oddly enough tho slightly different I don't think the va necessarily bad, I think in part it's the volume, like idk her volume is oddly consistent; I want her to be louder when she's pissed lol. I'm going back and someone mentioned she's sounds "too nice" and i think ye it doesn't sound in character sometimes in the episode.
Tho if she's not coming back it is odd to recast (unless it's a trick and she is coming back lol).
Tho yes it would make sense to at least keep the old va before kicking the new season but then thinking irl it's been years and who knows what they doing.
The only reason we can see is they change for representation and not to appropriate. Alot of conterversy around this, but personally I think the VA should match w characters ethnicity. Tho it can be alot harder to do like here where you already had the va for awhile and just now changing since now expected to sound the same.
As for nerris going back she sounds soooo different. She only talked twice.
One when the trio sat w her and dolph: different but not bad. Tho not typical "nerdy/dorky" voice.
And when everyone made fun of david: that i think was trying to mimic nerris "nerdy" (?) voice which made it sound off.

NYCC 19′ RWBY Volume 7 Panel
Went to the RWBY Panel at Hammerstein Ballroom, with following cast and crew in attendance: Kerry Shawcross & Miles Luna (RWBY writers & showrunners), Lindsay Jones (Ruby), Barbara Dunkelman (Yang), Arryn Zech (Blake), and Kara Eberle (Weiss).
New Announcements (Official News, Partnerships, Media Tie-ins)
The Smite collaboration was officially confirmed, with Team RWBY available in November. There will be a battle key to unlock a god skin. Miles noted humorously that it's typical for Smite characters to have a joke line of some kind, so "they won't a bunch of stinker joke lines for Weiss, since she wouldn't be good at telling them."
The next RWBY novel tie-in is called RWBY: Before the Dawn, focused on Teams CFVY and SSSN. It'll be published by Scholastic in July 2020. There is a chance that the lore featured in these novels may tie-in referenced in the general show lore later on.
The first issue of the DC Comics tie-in will be available on 10/9. Blake will also have her own upcoming storyline in this tie-in.
Volumes 8 and 9 have already been greenlit! Kerry noted that he literally started the first script for volume 8 this morning after the RWBY team was officially given the budget to start working on them several weeks ago.
Miles noted that Vol 9 will be shorter than the other seasons so that Vol 8 can be longer. This is also partially because they want Volumes 7 and 8 to be more connected story-wise.
Miles noted that the main draw of external partnerships is that "it expands the RWBY world and let others play in their sandbox." His favorite thing about the Scholastic novels is that "they're completely different from the show, but still feature the characters we love and get to expand on them."
What's Next for Volume 7
In terms of development, Miles and Kerry noted that "they've never been this far on a volume before so everyone in the office has been working normal hours."
There's no theatrical release for volume 7 this time, which is different compared to previous seasons, but at the same time, having this release usually forces the team to push things ahead of schedule, so this is probably a good thing since it lessens the pressure for the team? Kerry and Miles did thank RWBY fans for having general patience for the Volume 7 wait.
The new designs for Jaune, Nora and Ren were shown. Miles seemed pretty enthused about Ren's design in particular and joked about being "Ren-sexual." I think he also said something along the lines of: "He's just really hot, okay???"
Miles is most excited about exploring the settings of Atlas and Mantle (the extant city underneath Atlas) and that the "art team did a great job combining the future fantasy and tech savvy aspects" which define Atlas.
Lindsay interjected that "Atlas is straight-up NYC," and joked in comparing different architectural designs of the kingdoms, it's like a "Mac vs. PC" situation.
Arryn's excited to learn more about Weiss this season, since she herself has yet to see the full rendered setting of Atlas.
Kerry made a general note that he loves seeing all the new character outfits/designs animated, and Lindsay's favorite outfit is actually for an unseen character that wasn't featured in the teaser trailer shown.
General Q&A
"Favorite experiences working on RWBY so far": Lindsay noted that "it's been a life-changing and humbling experience." Kara noted that she loves the community and prior to two years ago when she came to NYCC for RWBY, she'd never been to NYC before. Arryn noted that "it's created this wonderful platform that's connected people from all different backgrounds, so it's lovely to hear all these stories of how RWBY has helped them in some way." Barbara noted that she loves "getting to be someone else's favorite cartoon character."
"Is there a reason why everyone is loaded on belts this season?": "Anime, Final Fantasy, and gravity." Arryn did note some confusion that Blake is wearing a cat suit, so she wasn't quite sure why she has so many belts. Kara came up with a humorous backstory theory on the spot for Weiss that she must have had some kind of traumatic experience where she was pantsed as a kid and joked about Weiss subsequently having a "belt butler" of some kind.
"What are some of the most difficult lines to voice act?": The general consensus is that one or two lines are the hardest since more emotion has to distilled/conveyed with less words. Lindsay said Ruby's "Leave her alone," was a tough line, for Arryn, it was Blake's "It's Fine" in Vol 6, Barbara noted that it's a toss-up between Vol 2 with her talking to Blake in the classroom vs. Vol 5 where Yang confronts her mother. For Kerry, it was the chibi episode where Neptune has a noir-esque introduction scene. And for Miles, it was when Jaune first comes across Pyrrha's statue.
"Which character would you choose to be stuck in an escape room with?": Arryn noted that either Pyrrha, who would be calm, or Yang, who would literally just break the room to escape. Miles noted that he'd pick Ren, who would also be chill, and for Kerry, he said that he'd go for the chaotic choice and chose Sun. Lindsay interjected with a humorous anecdote on how she's really bad at escape rooms, and once thought a clock in the room was a clue and subsequently convinced her co-worker to smash it - they ended up having to pay for it, since it wasn't a clue, and indeed, merely part of the overall set.
The panel ended with showing the first 12 minutes of episode 1 of Volume 7.

Birthday Blather.
Today’s my 24th birthday. It’s kind of surprising that a year has gone by so quickly. But it’s also the one year anniversary of my grandmother passing away. It’s her birthday too, as my mother said to me.
Read below if you want to see what I have to say about my thoughts today. It’s sort of dark so just a warning.
It was really hard last year, getting that call. My sibling and I were on vacation in Austin, Texas; we went to RTX 2017 together and we planned to spend the days after, looking around Austin on July 10th, going to the beach in Galveston on the 11th, and on my birthday (the 12th) we drove to San Antonio, before we were to drive back home to Kansas on the 13th.
I had gotten HORRIFICALLY burned going to the beach, my sibling and I having so much fun that neither of us really thought, “Hey we haven’t put sun screen on in a while” and then I realized as we walking around, about to head back to the car: Ow, everything hurts. My sibling was burnt as well, but I’m pretty sure I got the brunt of it.
It was bad. I couldn’t lean back in my seat, my shins hurt, the tops of my feet were burnt. I was very sore and upset, since I was so excited to go to San Antonio and I was roasted, when we called our mother that night upon returning to our hotel room. She was not to be told about the hideous burn, it was on the DL.
Anyway, we slept that night and woke up early to drive into San Antonio. I was sort of miserable, my burn still fairly hot to the touch and sensitive to everything. We got there and walked along the River Walk until we decided to head up to the street to walk to the Mercado, to shop for souvenirs. We start walking in one of the buildings in the area and my sibling’s phone rings. They answer as we tour this shop that has these adorable stone cut outs of animals that I was fawning over. They seem upset as they talk to whomever and hand the phone over to me after. My mother’s voice is tearful as she tells me the news: “Honey, Lita (short of Abuelita) passed away.”
I was stunned, I kind of chuckled and said, “That’s not a very funny joke...You’re joking, right?”
No, she wasn’t. I started to get choked up and my sibling led me outside, trying to place a comforting hand on my back as I started to cry and ended the call with my mother. It was kind of funny because they touched my burn and I kind of slapped their knee like “Rude, ow” and I remembered chuckling a little. The skies had been dark that day, a thing my torched back was thankful for, and it started to rain as we sat outside, sharing in our grief.
We spent some more time around the shops, we got lunch and walked to the Alamo before returning to the hotel. The drive home was shrouded in thunderstorms the next day as we rushed to get home to our mother and family that was grieving so far away from us.
And here we are, one year later. I went to the cemetery where my grandparents lie buried and I stared at the dates carved in the headstone. “Carmen: Died July 12, 2017.”
It felt like a slap in the face. One year it’s been: I started the radio job you had been so excited to hear about and it ended when I graduated, I graduated finally, I got a job, I met some of my heroes, I actually won a lottery (It was for Planet Comic Con tickets but she knew I always lost these things since I was a kid), I did this, I did that, I did so much without you. I know you were there with me, in every moment, every breath I took, every tear I shed.
I miss you so much. My birthday today has been relaxing and cheerful for the most part, but I spent time thinking about this year without you and how much I miss you every day. You would have LOVED hearing the stories about Planet Comic Con, about me meeting some of the people I’ve loved for so long from afar, about meeting the cinnamon roll that is Barbara Dunkelman (who honestly probably would have made my grandmother laugh if I ever showed her some of those videos I’d been meaning to), or the trip my sibling and I are planning this year, or seeing my goofy graduation photos, or being at the ceremony. There are so many things that I wish you could have physically shared with me, but it was just your time. It just so happened to be my birthday.
This sort of stuff only happens in the movies or on TV right? Someone dying on someone else’s birthday, and you happen to know that other person? It’s weird. And unusual. But that’s just how the cookie crumbled one year ago.
Happy birthday to you. And to me. I love you.
