"Nick And Nora With Barry Bostwick, Joanna Gleason, Christine Baranski, And Asta" (11/3/91) - Al Hirschfeld
I've decided Joanna Gleason's Hirschfelds are my favorite depictions out of all the divas. While some are reminiscent of the subjects in question, and certainly recognizable, I take one look at Joanna's and I know that's her. The 1985 one especially really captures her essence. I have it on good authority that one's hanging in her house right now.

Joanna Gleason's Sardi's Caricature, 2005
Joanna and the cast of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels received their own Sardi's portraits nearly twenty years ago. A few days ago, Chip Zien at last received his, and Joanna was there at the unveiling, but the world hates us because none of the press coverage has photos of them together. This is very upsetting to me and every other theatre gay in existence.

The Lights of Broadway Trading Card(TM), 2019 | Into the Woods cast, 2014 - Squigs
I really do love the Into the Woods illustration here. And I love that at last someone has drawn Joanna with her glasses, as it should be. They're a vital part of her character.

Fantastic Four Vol 1 #245
Mon Dec 21 2020 [08:23 PM] Wack'd: So the cover caption is "The Invisible Girl Fights Alone for the Life of Her Son" paired with the promised "Childhood's End" title [08:23 PM] Wack'd: So maaaaaybe this is where she sheds the Invisible Girl name and becomes Invisible Woman, and that's what that's about [08:24 PM] Wack'd: In any case I am at once tantalized and terrified by the prospect of a Bryne-penned Sue-focused issue [08:24 PM] Umbramatic: oh boy [08:25 PM] maxwellelvis: I'm quivering with appre... [08:25 PM] maxwellelvis: Fine, damn you [08:25 PM] maxwellelvis: hension [08:26 PM] Wack'd: So we open with Sue being interviewed on television for a show called Woman to Woman by Barbara Walker--a thinly-veiled take on Barbara Walters, the first woman to anchor an American news program when she became cohost of The Today Show in 1974 [08:27 PM] Wack'd: So. Immediately in some incredibly dicey territory [08:27 PM] Wack'd: Oh god this is going to be a lot, jesus, where to start [08:28 PM] Wack'd: So Walker addresses Sue as "Ms. Storm", and Sue corrects her to "Mrs. Richards", prompting Walker to claim she's "accepted a subservient role to her husband" [08:28 PM] Umbramatic: i [08:28 PM] InbarFink: There is a Lot to unpack here [08:29 PM] Wack'd: Walker then hones in on the Invisible Girl name, claiming it does not sound like "a modern, liberated woman" [08:29 PM] Wack'd: Sue's response is to smile politely and explain that none of this makes her feel less-than and she's proud to bare her husband's name [08:30 PM] Wack'd: Walker asks if Sue's "ineffectual powers" make her feel "short-changed or overshadowed", and Sue responds by levitating Walker's chair into the air with an invisible column [08:32 PM] Wack'd: Walker points out Sue's "primary function has been to be captured and terrorized by your foes" so Sue mentions a couple of the Lee-era wins she kinda sorta had [08:33 PM] Wack'd: And finally Walker goes in on Sue's history with "the super-chauvinistic Sub-Mariner", to which Sue responds that she was young when she considered dating him and hasn't romanced him in many years [08:33 PM] maxwellelvis: What's Byrne got against Barbara Walters? [08:33 PM] Wack'd: Yeah this feels mean not to Sue, necessarily--though Bryne's attempts to whitewash the past and many stupid authorial fiats by having Sue claim autonomy over it all grates like hell [08:34 PM] Wack'd: But painting a woman pioneer in news broadcasting as a hard-line idiot who attacks other women for being insufficiently feminist is incredibly gross [08:35 PM] Umbramatic: yeeesh, yeah [08:35 PM] maxwellelvis: Is he just hating her for not softballing? [08:35 PM] Wack'd: I dunno what Walters' actual track record is but John Bryne taking a hard stance against Feminism™  leaves a real rotten taste in my mouth [08:36 PM] Wack'd: Sue caps off with
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, we did not lose our human foibles when we gained our powers. And being the Invisible Girl has not deprived me of being a wife and mother, the role I love most.
[08:37 PM] maxwellelvis: Well, she reduced Donatello to tears when she interviewed the TMNT in 1991 [08:37 PM] Umbramatic: the turtles know what's up [08:38 PM] Wack'd: So there's a call at the studio, or as the producer puts it, "something's got the sweet things in reception all hot and bothered." [08:38 PM] Wack'd: I'm...not sure if Walker's producer being a misogynist is supposed to reveal Walker as a phony, or what [08:39 PM] Wack'd: Regardless, the flaming 4 sign is out the window, but no one wants to stop tape to alert Sue because Walker would be mad [08:39 PM] Wack'd: One Black guy says he'd "as soon drop by the Ku Klux Klan's annual ball", and *sigh* [08:40 PM] Umbramatic: REGRET [08:41 PM] Wack'd: *SIGH*
Tumblr media
[08:41 PM] maxwellelvis: Why'd you make us read that, what'd we ever do to you? [08:42 PM] Wack'd: Sue returns home to find Reed and Ben knocked out, and Johnny being strangled by some stranger [08:43 PM] Wack'd: He wants information from Johnny, but Johnny doesn't have it, so the stranger knocks him out as well [08:43 PM] Umbramatic: welp [08:43 PM] Wack'd: Sue is spying on the whole situation invisibly, but the stranger can see her and gives chase [08:44 PM] Wack'd:
"Whatever else I may have said to Barbara Walker I do have a limit to my powers, and against someone who could so easily beat the others, I'm going to need some high-caliber help!"
[08:45 PM] Bocaj: This is worse than the Lincoln’s mother defense [08:45 PM] Wack'd: She tries keeping him away with a force field and pelting him with invisible orbs but these also fail to work [08:47 PM] Wack'd: Meanwhile, Walker catches the news--"unidentified forces which seem to be filling the air around the tower complex of the Baxter Building"--and decides to take a crew down to get "footage of Miss Smart-Mouth doing her impression of a fifth wheel." [08:47 PM] Bocaj: 😐 [08:48 PM] Wack'd: Sue is chased down to ground level where Walker is catty at her when she tries to order her to safety [08:49 PM] Wack'd: Oh god I fucking hate this [08:50 PM] Wack'd: So it turns out Franklin heard someone on TV say "when are you going to grow up", prompting his powers to turn him into an amnesiac adult man [08:50 PM] Umbramatic: what [08:51 PM] Wack'd: Reed, Johnny, and Ben failed to recognize him, but Sue does, and comforts him as he breaks down sobbing [08:51 PM] Umbramatic: aw [08:52 PM] Wack'd: The rest of the Four come to and there's a brief sequence where Franklin offers to make Ben human again, and Ben turns him down, and Franklin reaches into Ben's mind and is terrified of complex adult emotions [08:53 PM] Wack'd: So he absorbs some of Reed's knowledge and there's some technobabble about how this happened and what does this mean [08:54 PM] Wack'd: Anyway he turns himself back into a child and Ben back into rocky Thing [08:55 PM] maxwellelvis: I'm guessing leathery Thing turned out to be harder to draw than he anticipated. [08:55 PM] Wack'd: Aaaaaaaand uh. No resolution on Sue's whole deal, I guess? A lot of talk about Ben's complicated feelings on being the Thing, which I am normally entirely here for, but. [08:56 PM] Wack'd: So what I assumed was going to happen was the news would see Sue comforting Franklin and helping him through this ordeal and so Walker would see the value of motherhood or whatever the shit and back down but Walker is just...gone? And Sue doesn't really do anything? [08:56 PM] Wack'd: Ben gets a good emotional resolution but not one that has anything to do with the story I just read [08:57 PM] Wack'd: Hell Sue doesn't even save the day except that maybe Reed Ben and Johnny would've never figured out this is Franklin without her [08:58 PM] maxwellelvis: So this issue had nothing to do with anything, even itself [08:58 PM] Wack'd: Anyway Ben is afraid Alicia only loves him as the Thing and even though he knows intuitively this isn't true his trauma is as such that he cannot fully accept it. Thus is narrated to us by Reed as Ben and Alicia walk off into the distance [08:59 PM] Umbramatic: weird [08:59 PM] Bocaj: People would be less sad if they walked into the distance less [08:59 PM] Wack'd: So. Issue is over. [08:59 PM] Wack'd: Friggin wild. [08:59 PM] Wack'd: Moving on, I guess [09:00 PM] maxwellelvis: This issue was like, one half of a terrible idea and one eight of a good one.

Favorite Books of 2020*
*being books I read in 2020, for the first time, rather than only limited to books published in 2020, and in no specific order, except for probably by author because I tend to read an author’s whole backlog when I ~discover~ them
**These are also, exclusively, books I gave 5 stars to. Didn’t intend it, but here we are.
Did this for my own gratification to sift through all the books I read this year, but thought it could serve as a recommendation list too! I pretty much exclusively read Historical (Regency) Romances, so that’s what this is.
1. The Captive by Grace Burrowes- Absolutely moving book, my new standard for hurt comfort
2. The Traitor by Grace Burrowes- ~villain~ from book 1 on this list as the MC and also super moving and just generally Great
3. Andrew: Lord of Despair by Grace Burrowes- I read the summary. I was not interested. I decided to read the first 10 pages before bed. Read the first 190 pages.
The rest of the list is under the cut, 29th entry has a spoiler so just be pre-warned.
4. Darius by Grace Burrows- I hate the trope this book covers, and yet I loved this book
5. The Seduction of an English Scoundrel by Jillian Hunter- So funny, actually I loved this whole series and since it is 15 books long, I won’t list them all. Just know I loved them. Most of them.
6. Teresa Medeiros. Seriously almost all of her books. Specifically, though: The Vampire Who Loved Me, After Midnight, One Night Of Scandal, Charming the Prince, and Thief of Hearts
7. Yours Until Dawn by Teresa Medeiros- This one was so good, it needs its own spot even though I also loved the ones above. This book though.
8. The Wedding Night by Barbara Dawson Smith- love people already married who come back together and fall in love, and this one delivered
9. The Markham Hall Series by Sierra Simone- erotica, Good book, I reread favorite scenes all the time
10. Duke I'd Like to F... and Naughty Brits- Two anthology that had to be read for their titles alone, liked all the stories which is all that really matters to me with anthologies
11. Two Rogues Make a Right by Cat Sebastian- so sweet, another hurt/comfort
12. The entire Sebastian St. Cyr Series by C.S. Harris- murder mysteries set after the Napoleonic Wars. LOVED. Also nice to see a love story play out over several books.
13. Someone to Romance by Mary Balogh- I’m going to be honest: I love everything Mary Balogh writes. Her books just work for me.
14. The Deadly Hours- another anthology, but I really only liked Susanna Kearsley and C.S. Harris’ stories. Still, worth it for me!
15. The Will Darling Adventures Series by KJ Charles- these boys. Charles makes me feel her books viscerally in a way I like.
16. Daring and the Duke by Sarah MacLean- Another villain (sort of) turned MC for this one. MacLean makes me like characters I don’t expect to like, and I would legitimately like anything she wrote so here we are.
17. A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Bryne- I hated the MC of this book in the rest of this series and now I like him, so again, here we are
18. The Earl of Christmas Past by Kerrigan Bryne- healed my pain from the Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and that is all I will say on the matter
19. All Scot and Bothered by Kerrigan Bryne- I think its clear that I just like Bryne’s books.
20. Marry in Scarlet by Anne Gracie- I was so excited for this book and it managed to exceed by expectations.
21. Amanda Quick- Just, all of them yet again. I literally gave most of them 5 stars and cannot reduce them to my favorites. I liked all of them. You can message me for specifics cause they do cross genres ect., but just know that I loved them all.
22. The Lord I Left by Scarlett Peckham- as a person with a complicated relationship with religion, this book appealed to me, and you know ~I hope that didn’t awaken anything in me~
23. The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham- loved the thesis of the book (if you can call it that in a fiction book). Thought it was really well done.
24. Something Wicked by Jo Beverly- it has been months since I read this book and every time I think about it, I’m like, damn that was a good book. Enemy-ish characters and like....my stomach hurt when I was reading it? I was that emotionally distressed. This book made me feel some kind of way.
25. That Scandalous Evening by Christina Dodd- young woman sculpts crush, gets the proportions of his....manly bits wrong because she’s an innocent, he’s embarrassed, she’s ostracized for 10 years! and then they meet again and its great and hilarious
26. My Favorite Bride by Christina Dodd- I’m 1000% sure this is a The Sound of Music retelling and it’s Perfect
27. House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas- I just think it was Neat. World building, characters, Maas, I liked it.
28. Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas- there was a scene cut from a previous book in this series about the characters in this book and it appears in this book, but someone posted it and every so often, I would read that scene over and over because it was so good and the full book did not disappoint me.
29. The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo- ok, this is a well written book but it has low ratings on goodreads for its ****SPOILERS**** psuedo-incest between two step-siblings. ***END SPOILERS*** I think its a little unfair, because it is a good book, and I love Choo’s writing, but I mean I understand that it can be a problematic read for some people.
and finally
30. Ten Things I Hate About the Duke by Loretta Chase- I’ve been waiting 3! years! for this book and boy was it worth that wait. I’m not even done with it yet, but yeah, it’s working for me.
