OJT EATS | Oriole

This week, we're off to the new 2nd iteration of the cocktail bar Oriole. After closing up shop in Farringdon, and having a brief pop-up across the road of their new place as Prelude, it has now re-opened in Covent Garden. As before, there are sets of live music but what's new is that this place has a fully fledged food menu; you can even book in for a dinner and show option. We weren't that hungry so just went down for drinks and some bar snacks.

We love us some padron peppers and these were good ones. They were surprisingly large but super well roasted and nicely seasoned. Perfect with a couple of drinks.

And right on cue, the drinks arrived. This was the Aomori which was gin, quince rakia, meadowsweet and Fuji apple. Super refreshing, slightly sweet and the fact that it came with a big chunk of candy floss on top was a bonus!

The other drink we ordered was the Arcadia which we were told was the Oriole signature that had been on the menu since the beginning. Once it arrived and after we'd eaten the delicious chocolate floating on top of the ice, it was easy to see why. Made with bourbon, maple syrup, peanut butter, rowan berry and grapefruit juice. Incredibly velvety and smooth with a sweetness from the maple syrup. Definitely worth ordering!

Now onto a bit more food. Shiitake mushrooms with an egg yolk. Super tasty and once you cut into that yolk, you get this lovely unctuous sauce. Definitely a step up from your normal bar finger food!

If you are looking for finger food though, they can also oblige. These truffle parmesan fries were excellent. Super truffle-y and with a good layer of parmesan on it. The fries were also crispy and fluffy inside. These are perfect alongside a few drinks.

The original Oriole was voted one of the best bars in the world and if our first visit to this new version was anything to go by, we would not be surprised if this iteration will end up on the same lists.

Blistered Shishito Peppers

These were so easy to make. I shopped around but they really were so simple.

Instructions

Preheat a pan on the stove over medium heat.

Add oil to cover the pan (can render animal fat too)

Toss in washed and dried peppers. Cook for 5-7 minutes. You'll know they're done when they look like that.

Add seasoning salt of your choice (I used a simple garlic salt)

Can mix sauce - gochujang, QP mayo, and lemon/lime juice + pepper (aioli)

Light BLT Dip

I love fun food, but try to keep it as healthy as I can! This ticks boxes, as being light, contains vegetables, and can be made healthier again by dipping crudités into it, instead of tortilla chips! If you really have a hankering for chips, try spraying some tortillas with sunflower oil, then cooking in the air fryer on a high temperature for a couple of minutes! More appetizers WINE NOTE:…

Sommerminne i vinterland Når det nesten er middag, men fortsatt er hakket for varmt i lufta... Nime Chow, ni:m tjao, er kambodsjanske sommerruller. Alts��, ferske ruller med snittete sprø grønnsaker, vasket og av og til forvellet, kokte nudler og eventuelt noe kaldt oppskåret protein. Reker, paté, stekt kjøttdeig, surimi eller tofu er populære muligheter. Pakket i salatblad og rullet inn i rispapir. Servert med en saus, gjerne en vinaigrette med urtehakk eller grønnsakhakk. Eller en søt peanøttsaus med litt chillisting. Vårruller i frityrstekt utgave er som regel introduksjon til denne asiatiske spesialiteten. Friske, snittete grønnsaker, gjerne med en type protein, pakkes i løvtynt rispapir og frityrsteikes. Spises omgående, gjerne dyppet i saus. Ofte en chilli-saus. Oppvarmet fordi, vel, førstegangsreisende i Asia bør sørge for at maten er oppvarmet eller hygienisk pakket . Iallefall inntil egen bakterietarmflora har harmonisert seg med lokal bakterieflora. Vårruller kom til Norge om lag når land som Fillippinene og Thailand startet bli mulige reise- og feriemål på 1970- og 1980-tall. Etter snart femti år dukker vårrulloppskrifter opp på norske nettsider som viser og deler oppskrifter på norsk tradisjonsmat. Nok et eksempel på vellykket integrasjon. Solnedsgangssnacksen jeg viser her med kaldt følge er et grei overgangsrite mellom dag og kveld. Akkurat når det trengs litt mat, og kald drikke, og temperaturen fortsatt er litt høy for noe tyngre måltid. Sommerruller er tross alt hakket sunnere uten frityren. Til en dollar femti cent er det ikke avskrekkende. Størrelsen på disse sommerrullene er typisk for det som serveres i de fleste restaurantene  i Kambodsja. Fin til forrett, som tapasalternativ eller barsnacks. Men det finnes også noen spesialsteder drevet av khmerer som tenker dem mer som fullverdige måltider. Da har de format mer som norske middagskjøttpølser, og er mange munnfuller. Gjort av rette kokka er det absolutt nydelig.
