Do you guys know what was the biggest surrender of our history after world war two?
It was the surrender of Pakistani military against Bangladeshi
On 16 December 1971.
But today I didn't grab your attention only to give you some random history facts.
We Bangladeshi students need your help! So please read this article till the end
After the partition of the Indian region in 1947, two independent nations were born. One India and one Pakistan.
The country of Pakistan was divided into two parts, East Pakistan, currently Bangladesh and West Pakistan, currently Pakistan.
But the distance between the two regions was thousands of kilometers. So uniting them into one singular nation was definitely foolish.
To think that the partition actually happened because of religion is laughable on itself but this is a topic of debate for another blog.
Even though we got our freedom from the British empire the people of East Pakistan kept on getting exploited by the west pakistan government.
Note, from now on I will refer to East Pakistan only as Bangladesh because the way we were exploited by our own so called government which only resided on the west pakistan and left us on poverty clearly indicates they never saw us as their own people.
Pakistan didn't only exploit us politically and financially, but they also tried to take away our unique Bengali identity from us.
They banned our traditional Bengali festivals like Noboborso (which is Bengali new year) They tried to ban Rabindra sangeet in fact, they even tried to replace our Bengali alphabet with the Urdu alphabet.
People were already protesting against it and were participating in every traditional festival
But the elastic snapped when they tried to take away our mother tongue, Bangla
When a pakistani politician made the announcement that "Urdu and only Urdu will be the only national language of Pakistan" in Dhaka university's convocation, it was the students who roared in disapproval.
In 1952, breaking the curfew, students and common people went on a protest for our mother language Bangla.
The police started to shoot them and the soil of Bangladesh became stained with blood and Bangla became the only language for people had given up their lives.
That's why we celebrate "Sahid dibos" and "international mother language day" on 21st February.
Throughout the fight for our existence, freedom and culture, students of our nation had always played a crucial role.
They also made a student's political party "Chatro league"
After the election of 1970, when the Pakistani government didn't agree to give power to the Bangladeshi political party "Awami league" our students again started to organize protests and other activities
Finally "Awami league" ordered for a mass protest. 2nd march Dhaka and 3rd march the whole Bangladesh was shut down.
On 2nd march 11 am "Chatro league" students hoisted the flag of Bangladesh in Dhaka university.
All this information dump was for you all to understand how the students of Bangladesh had always played a crucial part in our liberation.
Our students have always been fierce and had stood up for injustice even if they had to sacrifice their life for it.
And right now history is repeating itself!!!
Again students are getting attacked because of their protests but this time, it was our so-called "chatro league" and the government who are doing this inhumane act.
They are beating the students with rods, throwing bricks at them and even police are shooting them.
Only because we wanted the quota policy to demolish. Only because we wanted equal opportunity for civil jobs.
On 25th march 1971, the Pakistani military committed genocide in Dhaka. They attacked sleeping students in Dhaka university and protesters on roads who were still protesting at night.
And now the same thing is happening, history is repeating itself.
Students of public universities are getting attacked in their own dorm rooms, they are getting beaten to death by the so-called "chatro league" members. There are screenshots of the chatro league leaders group chats flothing around the internet where they command the other members to stab the protester students.
There was a time when Chatro league claimed they always stood up when our mother and sisters needed protection
And now those same people are beating up those same sisters they vowed to protect
Tumblr media
The police are shooting the protesters like they did in 1952 language movement
The only difference is in the past we were oppressed by another nation's government
But this time it's our own people who are causing our student's blood to stain our roads.
Please do not ignore us. Reblog this post or use the hastag #savebangladeshistudents to create awareness

Three student protest leaders who helped co-ordinate the recent rallies in Bangladesh have been forcibly removed from hospital by police officers, the BBC understands.
Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud and Abu Baker Majumder were taken from Gonoshasthaya Hospital in the capital, Dhaka, hospital staff said on Friday.
Staff members said the officers, who were dressed in plainclothes, had forced their discharge despite the misgivings of medics at the hospital.
The three men were being treated for injuries that they said were caused by torture and beatings they received in earlier police custody.
"They took them from us," Gonoshasthaya hospital supervisor Anwara Begum Lucky told the AFP news agency.
"The men were from the Detective Branch."
She added that she had not wanted to let the students go, but police had pressured the hospital chief to discharge them.
Mr Islam's elder sister Fatema Tasnim told AFP from the hospital that six plainclothes detectives had taken all three men.
Nahid Islam told reporters last week he feared for his life.
He was kidnapped from a friend's house last week, interrogated and subjected to physical and mental torture by people claiming to be detectives.
He says he fainted and when he regained consciousness, walked home and sought hospital treatment for blood clots on both shoulders and his left leg.
In response to his allegations, Information Minister Mohammad Ali Arafat told the BBC the incident would be investigated but that he suspected "sabotage" - that someone was trying to discredit the police.
Police have arrested more than 4,000 people since the unrest broke out last week.
All three students are members of Students Against Discrimination, the group responsible for co-ordinating this month's street rallies against civil service hiring rules.
The trio's student group had suspended a further wave of protests at the start of this week, due to the bloodshed.
At least 150 people have been killed as a result of nationwide clashes between police and university students, with security forces accused of using excessive force.
Protesters had been calling for quotas on government jobs to be scrapped.
Bangladesh had reserved about 30% of its high-paying government jobs for relatives of those who fought in the country's war for independence from Pakistan in 1971.
Bangladesh's top court has now rolled back most of these quotas and ruled that 93% of roles would now be filled on merit - meeting a key demand of protesters.
At the beginning of the protests the government imposed an unprecedented communications blackout, shutting down the internet and restricting phone services.
Earlier this week, Bangladesh's leader Sheikh Hasina was accused of crying "crocodile tears" after she was photographed weeping at a train station that was destroyed during anti-government protests.
She has disregarded criticism that her security forces deploy excess force to quell the unrest, and instead blamed her political opponents for the wave of violence.
Some student leaders have vowed to continue protesting to demand justice for protesters killed and detained in recent days.
They are also seeking the resignation of government ministers and an apology from Ms Hasina.

The words “organic denim” kinda belong together as much as “healthy cigarettes” or “sustainable fast fashion” do…
But Cone Mills White Oak Plant, North Carolina, produced a few limited runs of organic selvedge indigo denim back in its days, before one of the last domestic fabric milling operation in the US shut down in 2017. If you’ve ever owned a pair of pre-2001 classic 501s, the one plant that had been supplying Levi Strauss with its proprietary shrink-to-fit indigo denim for over 100 years is Cone Mills. Why that mill folded while demand for premium denim fabric had NEVER been that high worldwide at the time? Beats me. Blame it on Fast-Fashion new sets of rules reprogramming price points and consumers’ buying habits, and profit-driven suits lured by offshoring production to cut down on costs to accommodate shareholders…
I always thought Levi’s (a public yet somewhat still family-run business to this day) should have considered sacrificing a few assets and saved that plant… But no. Much cheaper to produce denim jeans in Turkey, Pakistan, Cambodia, Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia etc. And the garment-distressing factories to achieve that desirable « vintage » worn-in look are also right next door! How convenient. Much easier to turn a blind eye on environmental guidelines when they are being violated on the other side of the world… While the average consumer just wants a good deal, and "Buy Less, Pay More" never sounds too appealing to a society plagued by consumerism.
Anyways, here are two identical (before/after) pairs of Mister Freedom® "Californian" Lot64 OG23, cut from NOS (New Old Stock) « organic » denim produced by Cone Mills, jeans cut & sewn in California, USA. I wore my pair for about 8 months doing chores + 3 maintenance full washes. More deets here

« Violent clashes between people loyal to Bangladesh’s ruling party and demonstrators protesting against job quotas for coveted government jobs have wounded at least 100 people, police say.
The quota system reserves more than half of well-paid civil service posts, totalling hundreds of thousands of government jobs, for specific groups, including children of fighters in the country’s 1971 war of independence from Pakistan.
Critics say the system benefits children of pro-government groups who back Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who won her fourth consecutive term in a general election in January that was boycotted by the opposition.
Bangladesh’s top court last week temporarily suspended the quotas, but protesters have promised to continue their rallies until the parts of the scheme they oppose are scrapped completely.
Police and witnesses said hundreds of antiquota protesters and students backing the ruling Awami League party battled for hours on Monday on the Dhaka University campus, hurling rocks, fighting with sticks and beating each other with iron rods.
Some carried machetes while others threw petrol bombs, witnesses said in a report by the AFP news agency. “They clashed with sticks and threw rocks at each other,” police official Mostajirur Rahman told AFP.
Nahid Islam, national coordinator of the antiquota protests, said their “peaceful procession” was attacked by people carrying rods, sticks and rocks. “They beat our female protesters. At least 150 students were injured, including 30 women, and conditions of 20 students are serious,” he said.
Injured student Shahinur Shumi, 26, said the protesters were taken by surprise.
“We were holding our procession peacefully,” she said from her hospital bed at Dhaka Medical Hospital. “Suddenly, the Chhatra League [ruling party’s student wing] attacked us with sticks, machetes, iron rods and bricks.”
Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said an “attempt is being made to transform the anti-quota movement into an anti-state one using the emotions of young students”. »

Summary: Events in India’s life, inspired by the speech, ‘A Tryst With Destiny.’
India = Bharat
Pakistan = Faiz
Bangladesh or Bengal = Padma
Sri Lanka = Aadhya
Disclaimers:
I am not a history expert, nor will I ever claim to be. Everything written here is of my own research, if I made any mistakes please feel free to inform me!
I am also not Indian, or a Hindu Nationalist. I am not trying to demonize Pakistan in any way, if you feel that I am, please contact me privately and we can work together to fix it.
Warnings: Descriptions of violence and sickness.
Long years ago, we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially."
November 2nd, 1858.
Bharat stood before Britain, his hands tied behind his back; Padma stood behind him, her head also bowed.
They were in jail in New Delhi. Honestly, Bharat was surprised Britain had not shot him dead and then dragged him here.
Britain glared, but his gaze was not very threatening. "Padma." Padma's head quickly snapped up, "yes, sir?" she quietly asked. "Leave us alone in privacy. Wait for me outside."
Padma looked at Britain, then back at Bharat, then quickly left.
She was only gone for a second before Britain reeled back his fist and punched Bharat in the face; Bharat stumbled back and fell to the floor, and Britain glowered at him from above.
"You really thought you could beat me?" Britain taunted, kicking him in the stomach for emphasis. "Your glory-filled empire days are over; your independence is not coming soon, so do not hold your breath."
Bharat managed to sit up and spit on Britain's feet. "I've been alive for almost 4,000 years. I've seen empires as great as yours crumble to dust. And I am in full confidence that yours will be among them."
Britain's pale face burned with anger, and he again kicked Bharat. "You will be sent to the Andaman Islands and serve your sentence there until I declare it over." He kicked India again to prove his dominance and then left the room with a slam.
"At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance."
February 28th, 1948
Bharat watched the 1st battalion of the Somerset Light infantry march through Bombay from his balcony with a smile.
After this battalion left, India would finally be free of the British Army, a process more than 200 years in the making.
As he watched the battalion pass by, he remembered the 39th Foot, the first British army regiment stationed in India, and how much he loathed their presence. India's opinion hasn't changed since then.
Bharat knew Britain would try to hold on to the crumbling remnants of his empire, but as he watched the setting sun, he knew the British Empire had ended.
"It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity."
December 30th, 1906.
Bharat sat alone in Calcutta, he knew Faiz and Padma were in Dacca, and he had an inkling of their plans.
He had told Faiz it was a bad idea to take Padma on a journey like that with her declining health. But he hadn't listened.
Faiz had been particularly aggressive these past days, ranting about a new policy Bharat didn't like.
The two-nation policy, it had been dubbed. It supported the idea that upon Independence, the British Raj be split into two nations. One for Muslims and another for Hindus.
The whole idea sounded absurd to Bharat; it would just divide people further, and what about Muslims living outside of the territories that Faiz had suggested becoming the Muslim state? What would become of them, or the Hindus living in what would theoretically be in the Muslim State?
Faiz's whole plan was utterly ridiculous, and when Independence came, he hoped that Britain would be sensible enough to not divide them like this.
"At the dawn of history, India started on her unending quest."
1921, No specific date
It was a warm summer's night when Faiz had come to him with the question.
"What do you remember about…being born?"
Bharat raised an eyebrow, "now, why would you want to know about that?" Bharat questioned.
"I just wanted to know, I guess…" Faiz answered nervously.
Bharat chuckled; he knew why Faiz was asking these questions. Ruins of a civilization called the Indus Valley Civilization had just been discovered in Punjab; perhaps he wanted to see how that Civilization could be related to him.
Bharat cleared his throat and prepared for a long story.
"I don't remember a lot about being born. I was born in the Northeast; I just felt like being born. Suddenly the world just started; I'm unsure how to explain it. I followed a river to Civilization, and the local villagers took me in."
Faiz frowned, "so, no cool story about your birth." Bharat shook his head, "I'm sure you can ask Padma; maybe she has a better answer."
"and trackless centuries are filled with her striving and the grandeur of her success."
Sometime between the 4th century and 5th century AD.
India = Bhadra
Bangladesh = Amrapali
Bhadra went over the mathematics again to ensure he was getting it right. At that very moment, Amrapali decided to stick her head in.
"What are you doing?" Amrapali asked, looking over Bhadra's shoulder. Bhadra didn't even get to answer because Amrapali then groaned.
"Math again!?" Amrapali complained. Unlike Bhadra, mathematics didn't interest her at all. Instead, she devoted her days to plays and art.
"When are you going to do something fun?" Amrapali questioned, pulling on Bhadra's arm.
Bhadra laughed, "So you want to do something fun?"
Amrapali nodded, and Bhadra gestured to the board in front of them. "What about we play some chaturanga then?"
"and her failures. Through good and ill fortune alike, she has never lost sight of that quest or forgotten the ideals which gave her strength. We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."
August 16th, 1946
Bharat ran through the streets of Calcutta, looking for Faiz. The violence had escalated unimaginably, and Padma was right in the center.
Dead bodies in the streets, and business owners were forced to flee. Bharat had to find Faiz and stop this, but he had no clue where to find Faiz in the first place. He could be anywhere.
When he finally found Faiz, to say he was angry was an understatement.
"What have you done?" Bharat questioned.
Faiz scoffed, "What have I done? I didn't do anything!" Bharat gestured to the damage around them, "What is this then? Your dumb league incited the violence; what does 'direct action' mean?"
Faiz shook his head, "I don't know where you're getting your information from. The Muslim League is only standing their ground!"
Suddenly screams came from down the street, and a truck loaded with men holding iron bars and lathis drove past them. At first, Bharat thought the truck would keep going, but then the truck abruptly stopped.
The men trickled out of the truck and started running towards them, screaming.
Bharat looked at Faiz, "I think that's a sign for us to run."
"Freedom and power bring responsibility. The responsibility rests upon this assembly, a sovereign body representing the sovereign people of India. Before the birth of freedom, we have endured all the pains of labor, and our hearts are heavy with the memory of this sorrow. Some of those pains continue even now. Nevertheless, the past is over, and the future beckons to us now."
Sometime in 1950.
Bharat finished packing the final box; the British Raj house was finally empty. Bharat had meant to move out of this house for a couple of months; the memories associated with this house were just too much.
There was just one thing left, the giant painting on the wall. Britain had commissioned this shortly after Queen Victoria was crowned Empress of India.
Britain stood tall and proud in the center, surrounding Bharat, Pakistan, and Padma. None of them were smiling except Padma, who smiled even when she wasn't supposed to.
Bharat couldn't decide whether to get rid of or keep it; it was something about nostalgia.
But there was something Bharat hadn't considered; Pakistan was gone. His own country now, a country that hated his guts.
Bharat knew that he could keep his personal relationships separate from a county's, but keeping a good relationship with Pakistan would be impossible.
Bharat took the portrait off the wall. It was time to let go of the past.
"That future is not one of ease or resting but of incessant striving so that we may fulfill the pledges we have so often taken and the one we shall take today. The service of India means the benefit of the millions who suffer. It means the ending of poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity.
The ambition of the greatest man of our generation has been to wipe every tear from every eye.
That may be beyond us, but as long as there are tears and suffering, so long our work will not be over."
1943
Bharat finished reading the letter, his hopes thoroughly diminished. According to the letter by Aadhya, Padma's condition had severely worsened. The Bengal Famine was wrecking her, even as she lay in New Delhi. Aadhya doubted that she would make it past partition.
Faiz quickly noticed Bharat's emotional change. "What happened?" Faiz asked. Bharat sighed, "Padma's condition worsened. Aadhya thinks she won't make it past partition."
Faiz frowned, "Padma is much stronger than she looks; she'll be fine." Bharat snorted, "You overestimate how strong Padma is. You know how weak she was post-1905."
Bharat crumbled up the paper and threw it on the ground; he would have to write back to Aadhya later. He wished he could be there, but Britain would throw a fit if he left the front lines. Bharat prayed that Faiz was right, he knew Padma was strong, but the last few decades had put quite a strain on her.
"And so we have to labor and to work, and work hard, to give reality to our dreams. Those dreams are for India, but they are also for the world, for all the nations and peoples are too closely knit together today for anyone of them to imagine that they can live apart.
Peace has been said to be indivisible; so is freedom, so is prosperity now, and so is disaster in this one world that can no longer be split into isolated fragments.
To the people of India, whose representatives we are, we make an appeal to join us with faith and confidence in this great adventure. This is no time for petty and destructive criticism, no time for ill will or blaming others. We have to build the noble mansion of free India where all her children may dwell.
The appointed day has come - the day appointed by destiny - and India stands forth again, after long slumber and struggle, awake, vital, free and independent. The past clings on to us still in some measure, and we have to do much before we redeem the pledges we have so often taken. Yet the turning point is the past, and history begins anew for us, the history which we shall live and act and others will write about."
January 26th, 1950.
It was done. The Constitution of India was finally completed, passed, adopted, and put into force. It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days, and 6.4 million rupees. But all that mattered now was that the new country had a constitution, they had gone the last three years of Independence without one, and Bharat worried that every day without one would lead to India's destruction.
The number of people living within Bharat's border scared him but filled him with awe. 359 million people of different cultures and religions now resided within his country.
He would have to work with all of the personifications to make sure that they didn't fight amongst each other and that they all got the rights given to them under the Indian constitution.
The new constitution didn't guarantee that India would stay together; at any time, something could happen, but it gave the country more legitimacy and made it a little more stable. Which was all Bharat could care about.
Bharat had no idea what would lay before him in the future, what would happen. All he hoped was that India would stay together through all of it.
"It is a fateful moment for us in India, Asia, and the world. A new star rises, the star of freedom in the east, a new hope comes into being, a vision long cherished materializes. May the star never set, and that hope will never be betrayed!"
September 25th, 1949
Bharat smiled as he watched the crowds gather in anticipation of the elephant's arrival. It was India's first big diplomacy move, and he was happy it was coming to fruition.
"Are you ready to see the elephant?" Bharat asked Kiku. Kiku had always been a prominent ally of his, even with the whole Anglo-Japanese thing that had gone down. "I am excited to see the elephant. Thank you, India-san, for the elephant. Indira is bringing hope to Japanese children everywhere."
Bharat couldn't take that statement to heart due to mainly America's occupation of Japan. Everything that Kiku was saying was likely scripted by America himself. Bharat knew this because this had happened to him many times under Britain's rule. Kiku was also in a terrible state, his skin scarred and charred, and he was left standing with a cane.
Cheers erupted as the elephant finally embarked off the ship. Bharat and Kiku made their way to the front of the crowd. "She's majestic," Bharat sighed; he had always held a deep respect for elephants, the way their presence commanded some respect. Kiku nodded along with him, "They really are."
"We rejoice in that freedom, even though clouds surround us, and many of our people are sorrow-stricken and complex problems encompass us. But freedom brings responsibilities and burdens, and we have to face them in the spirit of a free and disciplined people.
On this day, our first thoughts go to the architect of this freedom, the father of our nation, who, embodying the old spirit of India, held aloft the torch of freedom and lighted up the darkness that surrounded us.
We have often been unworthy followers of his and have strayed from his message, but not only we but succeeding generations will remember this message and bear the imprint in their hearts of this great son of India, magnificent in his faith and strength and courage and humility. We shall never allow that torch of freedom to be blown out, however high the wind or stormy the tempest."
February 2nd, 1948.
When Bharat had heard of Mahatma Gandhi's death, he had gone into a state of shock. At first, Bharat had assumed that Gandhi had died of natural causes, a heart attack maybe. But when he learned that he was assassinated, Bharat was shocked.
Now as he walked the five miles of Gandhi's funeral procession, Bharat was left in a state of confusion. He knew Gandhi would not live forever, but to have his life cut short like this was undeniably cruel. All because he didn't support violence against Muslims.
Now Bharat knew that all the violence of the partition was useless and never should have happened. Religious extremity had led to his death, and Bharat was determined to ensure that the same religious extremity would lead to his own country's death.
"Our following thoughts must be of the unknown volunteers and soldiers of freedom who, without praise or reward, have served India even unto death.
We also think of our brothers and sisters who have been cut off from us by political boundaries and who unhappily cannot share at present in the freedom that has come. They are of us and will remain of us whatever may happen, and we shall be sharers in their good and ill fortune alike."
1990's
Loud screams of 'India Zindabad' color the air orange, green, and white. Bharat knew that Faiz was on the other side of the border, watching the same ceremony he was in.
The national enthusiasm and patriotism were almost too much for Bharat, and he could feel his competition flaring up.
The guards wore their khaki uniforms while wearing frilly red headdresses that even India thought were a little too expensive.
The whole show went on for 20 minutes, with each of the guards showing off. They met in the middle for a blink-and-you-miss-it handshake, and that was that.
India knew this ceremony was supposed to connect, but it only inspired his competition with Pakistan.
"The future beckons to us. Whither do we go, and what shall be our endeavor? To bring freedom and opportunity to the common man, to the peasants and workers of India; to fight and end poverty and ignorance and disease; to build up a prosperous, democratic, and progressive nation; and to create social, economic, and political institutions which will ensure justice and fullness of life to every man and woman.
We have hard work ahead. There is no resting for any one of us till we redeem our pledge in full, till we make all the people of India what destiny intended them to be.
We are citizens of a great country on the verge of bold advances, and we must live up to that high standard. To whatever religion we may belong, all of us are equally the children of India with equal rights, privileges, and obligations. We cannot encourage communalism or narrow-mindedness, for no nation can be great whose people are narrow in thought or in action."
March 2022
India rechecked the gdp reports again; he knew his economy had massively grown. But this, this achievement of irony, was a little too unbelievable.
It was true India had taken over Britain, becoming the fifth-largest economy in the world.
With a cheer, Bharat threw up the papers in the air, how he would pay to see England's current state.
India would have to bide his patience until he saw England again to brag about it. Still, he would have to make his birthday party much more glamorous to showcase his new position in the world economy.

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday executed a U.S. national convicted of torturing and killing his father, state media reported, bringing to at least 19 the number of foreigners put to death this year.
The death sentence for Bishoy Sharif Naji Naseef was carried out in the Riyadh region, the official Saudi Press Agency said.
The Gulf Kingdom is frequently criticized for its prolific use of capital punishment, which human rights groups say undermines its bid to soften its image through a sweeping "Vision 2030" social and economic reform agenda.
A court found that Naseef, whose age was not given, beat and strangled his Egyptian father to death and mutilated him after he died, and that he also used drugs and attempted to kill another person, SPA said.
The mode of execution was not specified, but Saudi Arabia has in the past often used beheading when implementing the death penalty.
A State Department spokesperson told CBS News on Wednesday that the U.S. "are aware of reports of the execution of a U.S. citizen in Saudi Arabia."
The spokesperson added that "We are monitoring the situation and have no further comment at this time."
Saudi Arabia was the world's third most prolific executioner last year, Amnesty International has said.
More than 1,000 death sentences have been carried out since King Salman assumed power in 2015, according to a report published earlier this year by the European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights and the Britain-based group Reprieve.
A total of 91 people — 19 of them foreigners — have been executed so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on state media reports.
As well as the U.S. national, those put to death came from countries including Bahrain, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Jordan, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines and Yemen.
Last year's announced figure of 147 executions was more than double the 2021 figure of 69.
Executions for drug crimes resumed in 2022, ending a moratorium that lasted for almost three years.
The 2022 total included 81 people put to death on a single day for offenses related to "terrorism," an episode that sparked an international outcry.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, King Salman's son and the de facto ruler, has said on multiple occasions that the kingdom was reducing executions.
In a transcript of an interview with The Atlantic magazine published by state media in March 2022, Prince Mohammed said the kingdom had "got rid of" the death penalty except for cases of murder or when someone "threatens the lives of many people."

A Burnt Love Turns into a Biscuit: The Story of the Baqarkhani
Once upon a time, a man's tears turned a mill. He lost his love to a rival in the royal court.
Perhaps you can guess already, the object of his desire was too beautiful. But it was the time of kings and queens. And when the premier's son set his eyes on the same woman he loved, he found himself trapped in the royal chokehold.
After a while, his lover was dead in the swordfight that ensued. He could not save her.
He ordered to bake a new biscuit in her memory. It was his magnum opus, and an undying signature on time itself. Perhaps he too didn't know that it would become immortal. And every time it is baked, people will remember the love story - for centuries.
The delicacy is known as Baqarkhani - named after the couple who could not be together in life, Agha Baqer and Khani Begum.
Tumblr media
It is not exactly a biscuit. Best to say, it is somewhere between a biscuit and a cookie. The subtle difference of its flaky and yet silky texture makes it a category of its own. But nevertheless, it is a baked good.
In the absence of a proper word in English, some call it a flatbread.
Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is the location where it originates. Or more precisely, the 'old Dacca', the oldest part of the city which now looks like a downtown suburb, still littered with the ruins and the last remains of the Mughal buildings and structures - from five hundred years ago.
Mirza Agha Baqer lived in the 18th century. History says, he died in the year 1754. In different versions, he appears either as the adopted son or the son-in-law of Dhaka's Naib Nazim, the chief of the city, Murshid Quli Khan II. And Khani herself was a courtesan. Zaynul Khan, the son of the Wazir (the Prime Minister of the City), abducted her after she turned him down for Baqer.
As the story goes, Zaynul tricked the premier into believing he is dead when Baqer followed him. And out of fury, he ordered to lock up Baqer alive in a tiger's cage. But he was too much of a brave guy and ended up killing the tiger.
That did not end the turmoil. It is said that the premier himself killed Zaynul when he attempted to hurt Baqer. But at his last breath, he pierced his sword into Khani's chest, leaving her dead with him.
300 years later...
The biscuit never lost its popularity, but records of time are saying that it became impoverished after the second world war. The country came to a standstill and people were battling a famine.
So instead of milk and Malai - the locally churned cream, the bakeries at Old Dacca started baking it with oil and Dalda - a type of fat extracted from vegetables.
Originally, it might have been way silkier than it is today. The version that remains comes in mostly sweet and salty flavors. But the local, traditional bakers of the city aren't affluent enough to recreate the very authentic version.
For centuries, it served as the breakfast of the city's royalties. When it started losing its glamour, it slowly turned into a rather ordinary food.
Tumblr media
Pic: Collected
It is no more a royal feast now and everyone can afford a piece or two. But lately, it has been commercialized. These days, it comes in dry chocolate flavors as well - which is the newest addition.
The factories of Baqarkhani in the city are now baking it in the commercial ovens. Although, these rather synthetic versions can neither beat the taste nor the texture of the traditional bakeries.
The traditional flavors still surviving from ages include sweet and salty Paneer (cottage cheese), sugar, salt, Kebabs, minced meat and coconut.
And it is still a hot favorite in at least three countries of modern times, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India.
Tips for Baqarkhani
If you ever come to see Dhaka, don't forget to try it out. I guess at this point, that goes without saying. But if you do, here's my suggestions.
You have to travel to Old Dhaka and hunt it down right from the shabby, dimly lit bakeries by the road. If you are going for the cheaper versions manufactured at factories, you will miss the entire taste profile.
It is a token of love, a melt-in-mouth delicacy. And it turns into dust if your grip is too firm when holding it, and it crumbles. Just like the lost love of Baqer and Khani. The only Baqarkhani that's fake is a hard one. The products made in its own land all retains the softness and the snowflakes that drops from its body.
My American friend tried to make it in her oven. It didn't exactly turn out as what it was meant to be. From the pictures she showed me, I could tell that it came out a rocky (and if not rockhard) buttertoast - sitting on her cookie tray. She wasn't as much of a Baqarkhani enthusiast as I am, but perhaps a few more tries could make it better. So, while you can always google up a recipe and make it at home, it would be best to taste the original thing that comes out of the traditional, clay oven dug on the ground.
It is addictive. Once you taste it, you will crave for more. So, every time I buy it, I make sure I'm having a mix of flavors in my rack - both sugary and salty. The sweet Baqarkhani is harder to resist, but it still satisfies my sugar cravings on a rather low sugar count than all the desserts I would have in place of it.
And when a jar of Baqarkhani ends up at your life, make sure to try it with desi meat curries. The cup-a-Baqarkhani sold nowadays is rather a new twist to it, turning it into a meatier and juicier wholesome dish. Fewer carbs than a regular rice Bento, and still a wholesome meal. And there's quite a few recipes available on the internet for the leftovers, too!
Everyone knows that the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan once built the Taj Mahal to immortalize his love for his wife, the empress Mumtaz. But the Baqarkhani was here, too.
And it will be here, like a brown moon - served on silvers. And on our plates - will be a story of love, to cherish and remember.
(Though it's just a dream, I'm pretty sure we will remember it lavishly one day. The story has everything one could ask for - kings and queens, the white marbles of the royal palace and the fountains in the room, streaming, the dancing courtesan girl, the heartbroken Baqer and the jealous Zaynul.
When the time is ripe, and the country finally gets a real film industry - Baqer and Khani will become the Romeo and Juliet of a desi blockbuster.
It is not just flour and sugar. All of these goes into the making of Baqarkhani.)
