I often post about Palestine but I'd like to take a moment to talk about what's happening in Bangladesh.
KEEP YOUR EYE ON BANGLADESH
TL;DR Students killed for protesting the government's quota system. Students are being arrested and murdered for speaking up about their deceased friends. Everyone is being threatened by the government and many social media platforms are being banned.
All I'm asking is to spread the word. Please. International pressure really works for our nation. We're dying here. UNICEF reports 34 children dead. There might be more. All reblogs and likes and shares are appreciated. Thank you. I guess I'll see you tomorrow.
Past
A movement protesting the government's quota system put forth by the father of our nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This was placed in the first place to help the grandchildren of those who fought in the Liberation War of our country to get government jobs. We have a terrible job market here which is why many highly educated people leave the country. On 16th July, While protesting, a Student named Abu Sayed of Begum Rokeya University was killed by the police. This only stoked the feelings of injustice between the students.
During a press conference, the PM was asked about the quota for the grandchildren of veterans. Her response? "If we don't give jobs to the grandchildren of Veterans, will we give jobs to the grandchildren of Razakars?" Razakars are the people who collaborated with the Pakistani Forces to bring down the Bangladeshi freedom fighters. They betrayed the nation for their own gain.
Traitors.
Imagine calling the youth of your nation traitors.
Imagine calling almost 14 million young people who can't find a job despite their credentials betrayers.
Imagine cursing people who are protesting for job equality under a government with the all time highest corruption in the history of this nation.
On 17th July the broadband connection centre in Mohakhali was burned down. Mobile data services and communication were shut down by the PM. After 11 days the internet was properly restored.
On 19th July, A National Military Curfew was put in place by the Prime Minister to mitigate the unrest.
But that was last month. If you need details I highly recommend sources in Bangladesh like the Daily Star or reputable like Al Jazeera. The quota has since been lifted. Lives were lost. But it was for a good cause, right?
Right?
RIGHT?
Present
Well no. There's still a curfew in the capital. Several districts like Cumilla are still under attack. The government warns of not spreading misinformation yet still lie about the severity of the issue. The police are arresting those who protest as well as those who speak up. The students are demanding for the resignation of the PM. The PM obviously refuses to apologise or even acknowledge the deaths of some 147?
or is it 200?
They're not counting how many they're killing. They're not letting anyone else count either.
It is midnight here. This morning as in 4th August 2024, the students have called for a non cooperation movement. The Ruling Party Awami League will also be holding rallies across the nation tomorrow. I do not know what is going to happen to me. I do not want to think of what will happen to my family tomorrow. I don't really care. What I'm truly scared for is the future. As these protests do not end well here.
Future
Precedence says the PM will eventually resign. Every student protest of our nation has ended in momentary success.
Momentary
What comes after is usually a military regime. A caretaker government until a next government is chosen in a supposed election. Even then if they decide to hold an election. The caretaker government is usually run as a dictatorship. It was true for the 60s. It was true for the 90s. I don't doubt it will happen again.
I'm graduating next year. My niece is still new to the academic system. I wish her the best. My grandmas and grandpas are dead. Nobody left to pray for me. My aunts and uncles are growing old. My cousins can't speak up for fear. My mom is so tired. My dad is angry. I'm unsure if I will still be able to post the next couple of days.
All I'm asking is to spread the word. Please. International pressure really works for our nation. We're dying here. UNICEF reports 34 children dead. There might be more. All reblogs and likes and shares are appreciated. Thank you. I guess I'll see you tomorrow.

i just wanna thank you all here on tumblr who'(of not bd origin)s been sharing all the news and posts of Bangladesh. Seeing people care, seeing people actually fckn wanting to stand up for us even tho you didnt have to.Also after all, many people of our own didnt stand up for the martyred people either and most probably tomorrow's gonna be a day of huge bloodshed too. The student league of the current government (bcl) have been taking preparation to meet the students tomorrow in the capital and they've even posted about killing off every protesters who're demanding the govt to give up power and also spreading rumors that they're gonna kill us all off in 7 minutes-which yes is ridiculous im just adding this to say how much confident the government party still is that they're gonna just wipe off the protest and they're not gonna stop at any cost. But, fortunately, the students are not going to too. I dont know how many activity status dots in messenger will go off for forever tomorrow. I dont know how many replies our group chat will have after tomorrow. But still for the blood already shed, the brothers and sisters already martyred, the students will still InShaAllah come out in the streets again following the leaders. Many of us can do nothing but just share posts and encourage the ones who can go there. And here on tumblr i see so many people supportinh OUR cause beside palestine ,sudan, congo and others. and I'm so grateful for that. Even after many of our own are murdering their own brothers and sisters for a cup of tea yet there still is humanity living in every corner of earth. I'm so grateful to you guys for reminding me that.
ps. the awami students league, even tho they werent active today in the capital massacared cumilla and sylhet district (please add more if you know) Even after the prime minister called for a peaceful meeting with the students to settle this once and for all. The students declined demanding her resignation for letting so many students be killed. The army cheif held meeting nationwide and declared they're not going to interfere and also the police surrendered to the students. (which yes is kinda sus if u think about it)
pss. please feel free to comment and notify me if i left out something or said something wrong, im only a human keeping up with so many things happening around me and stresed out very fckn much thank you

A walk through Bengal's architecture
Bengali architecture has a long and rich history, fusing indigenous elements from the Indian subcontinent with influences from other areas of the world. Present-day Bengal architecture includes the nation of Bangladesh as well as the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam's Barak Valley. West Bengal’s architecture is an amalgamation of ancient urban architecture, religious architecture, rural vernacular architecture, colonial townhouses and country houses, and modern urban styles. Bengal architecture is the architecture of Wind, Water, and Clay. The Pala Empire (750–1120), which was founded in Bengal and was the final Buddhist imperial force on the Indian subcontinent, saw the apex of ancient Bengali architecture. The majority of donations went to Buddhist stupas, temples, and viharas. Southeast Asian and Tibetan architecture was influenced by Pala architecture. The Grand Vihara of Somapura, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the most well-known structure erected by the Pala rulers.
The Grand Vihara of Somapura
According to historians, the builders of Angkor Wat in Cambodia may have taken inspiration from Somapura. Bengal architecture became known for its use of terracotta due to the scarcity of stone in the area. Clay from the Bengal Delta was used to make bricks.
The temple architecture has distinct features like the rich wall decoration, often known as the terracotta temples, which was one of the remarkable elements of Bengali temple architecture. The double-roofed architecture of thatched huts was replicated by Bengali temples. Square platforms were used to construct the temples. Burnt brick panels with figures in geometric patterns or substantial sculptural compositions served as the temples' adornment.
Dochala style
These served as models for many temples that were built in undivided Bengal. Construction materials used in ancient times included wood and bamboo. Bengal has alluvial soil, so there isn't a lot of stone there. The bricks that were utilized to build the architectural components were made from stone, wood, black salt, and granite. Bengal has two different types of temples: the Rekha type, which is smooth or ridged curvilinear, and the Bhadra form, which has horizontal tiers that gradually get smaller and is made up of the amalaka sila. Mughal architecture, including forts, havelis, gardens, caravanserais, hammams, and fountains, spread throughout the area during the Mughal era in Bengal. Mosques built by the Mughals in Bengal also took on a distinctive regional look. The two major centers of Mughal architecture were Dhaka and Murshidabad. The do-chala roof custom from North India was imitated by the Mughals.
Jorasako thakurbari
The Rasmancha is a heritage building located at Bishnupur, Bankura district, West Bengal.
Influence of the world on Bengal architecture: Although the Indo-Saracenic architectural style predominated in the area, Neo-Classical buildings from Europe were also present, particularly in or close to trading centers. While the majority of country estates had a stately country house, Calcutta, Dacca, Panam, and Chittagong all had extensive 19th and early 20th-century urban architecture that was equivalent to that of London, Sydney, or other British Empire towns. Calcutta experienced the onset of art deco in the 1930s. Indo-Saracenic architecture can be seen in Ahsan Manzil and Curzon Hall in Dhaka, Chittagong Court Building in Chittagong, and Hazarduari Palace in Murshidabad.
Hazarduari Palace in Murshidabad
The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, designed by Vincent Esch also has Indo-Saracenic features, possibly inspired by the Taj Mahal. Additionally, Kolkata's bungalows, which are being demolished to make way for high-rise structures, have elements of art deco. The 1950s in Chittagong saw a continuation of Art Deco influences. The Bengali modernist movement, spearheaded by Muzharul Islam, was centered in East Pakistan. In the 1960s, many well-known international architects, such as Louis Kahn, Richard Neutra, Stanley Tigerman, Paul Rudolph, Robert Boughey, and Konstantinos Doxiadis, worked in the area.
The Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban
This iconic piece of contemporary Bangladeshi architecture, was created by Louis Kahn. Midsized skyscrapers dominate the cityscapes of contemporary Bengali cities, which are frequently referred to as "concrete jungles." With well-known architects like Rafiq Azam, architecture services play a key role in the urban economies of the area. Overall Bengal architecture was influenced by various contemporaries of their time and continues to evolve.
Gothic architectural style seen in St. Paul's Cathedral in Kolkata.
Zamindar era buildings in ruin.

This is my purely fandom based account. I post all my serious posts on my other blog. However, this is also the account with the highest reach. I have done my best to help out others, including donating to GFMs from Palestinians. This is my turn to ask for help.
I am a Bangladeshi Hindu. Our lives are serious risk right now. My friends and family members had to leave their own homes for safety. I am posting screenshots and links to the attacks we faced in the last few days. Any protests on social media are faced with more attacks for being a 'Awami league' (the previous government) or 'RAW agent' (Indian intelligence agency). I supported the student protests and did my best to support them, then why are my family, friends, and faith at risk? Is this what I deserve? I absolutely condemn the corruption and terror by the last Awami League Government, but why is that our fault? My family never even dared to vote in any national elections. There's no police available as they are afraid. The army is of very limited help. There are photos on Facebook of students and local people trying to guard the temples but that is nowhere enough.

I can't risk the lives of my family for my hobby. I strictly used my other blogs to post about student protests, but I only have a handfull of followers there.)

What is happening in Bangladesh ?
A protest by the students to abolish the Quota system. Now, what's the quota system ? A system introduced in 1972 and went through a change in 2018, which is, 56% (the info might be inaccurate too) of the government jobs were blocked under various quotas. Mostly it was covered for the freedom fighters, for women and underdeveloped districts receiving a share of tenth each, with 5% alloted for indigenous communities and 1% for disabled.
The students want all the quotas to be abolished other than the last two. As according to them and to many, the reservation shrinks down the number of jobs open for all and they want the jobs to be given to the people who deserve.
Keep that in mind that the young unemployment rate is very high there.
The protest has deepened from the past 1 week. Students are protesting and dying. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh is filling up the places by sending troops of armies, police already trying to calm the fuss down, but rather, heating it up more. So many students have already died, and the riot continues. The students fighting, troops shooting them dead. Is it really fair ? Tell me people, is the present situation of Bangladesh really appealing to see ? What about these small kids ? The person who is leading the country says that the students must be patient and see what the apex court has to say and that veterans deserve utmost respect. What about the students who are working hard day and night to get a government job ? They'll be declined because that place will be reserved for someone else ?
I stand for every student who's losing their soul to fight for justice. I stand for those who are working so hard. I stand for every student.

What's happening in Bangladesh Today? (4th August 2024)
The Anti-fascist protest was held all over the country. Not only students but also people from different occupation, class and age joined the protest. The movement was massive. The demand is one: Step down PM Sheikh Hasina
Police open fired the protesters in different districts.
Government body Chhatra League armed (with sticks, guns, sticks) attacked ordinary students.
Mobile internet was stopped by the order of the government. Facebook and WhatsApp were closed. (After some hours it restored)
93 people died today so far around the country. The number can change.
A lot of people are injured.
In some places, The Bangladeshi Army protected the ordinary students from the "Chhatra league" goons.
Chhatra League has committed violent incidents in various places across the country.
Government has imposed curfew again on the general public.
The procession will go on as long as PM Sheikh Hasina don't resign.
The current situation of the country is bad overall. Keep praying for us.🎀 I only have few videos of the situation. I'm gonna upload those one by one.

Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Bangladesh's embattled prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, resigned Monday and fled the country after protesters stormed her official residence in the capital amid a growing revolt that began over quotas for government jobs in which hundreds of mostly protesters have died.
The announcement from the head of the army, Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman, came after security forces were overwhelmed by thousands of people incensed by a violent government crackdown descending on the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka, setting cars and offices ablaze.
Footage circulating online shows protesters celebrating inside Hasina's residence, removing furniture and elsewhere in the city trying to tear down a statue of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former prime minister and leader of the country's independence movement, who was assassinated in 1975.
Promising the formation of an interim government, Zaman pleaded with demonstrators to call off their protests.
"Whatever demands you have, we will fulfil and bring back peace to the nation, please help us in this, stay away from violence," said Zaman who promised the military would also back off.
"The military will not fire at anyone, the police will not fire at anyone, I have given orders."
Hasina arrived by helicopter in India at a military airbase 17 miles east of Delhi on Monday evening with the BBC reporting that she may be en route to London, citing unconfirmed reports.
A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday that he wanted to see urgent action to "ensure democracy" won out -- but made no mention of Hasina coming to Britain or any discussions regarding where she might go into exile.
"The right to peaceful protest must be protected and never subjected to violence, and we call on the authorities to release all peaceful protesters and ensure due process is followed for those charged and prosecuted," he added.
"I hope that swift action is taken to ensure that democracy prevails and accelerate the process towards peace and security to people in Bangladesh."
Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, said she had been considering resigning for the past 24 hours and had left the country for her own safety at the insistence of her family.
He rejected the accusations leveled at the 76-year-old of outstaying her welcome after four terms totaling more than two decades during which she gradually morphed from the democratic icon catapulted into office in a people power uprising into an authoritarian leader amid crackdowns on dissent and allegations of graft.
"She has turned Bangladesh around. When she took over power it was considered a failing state. It was a poor country. Until today it was considered one of the rising tigers of Asia. She's very disappointed."
In Dhaka, demonstrators ignored an evening curfew as unrest and looting continued into the night with demonstrators breaching the gates and damaging the residence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan in the Dhanmondi area of the capital where smoke was seen coming from the building.
Protesters torched the city's Mujibur museum.
Northeast of Dhaka, 150 miles away in Sylhet, the offices of the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police and the homes of several councilors were attacked.
Hasina's resignation came a day after more than 90 people were killed Sunday during clashes between anti-government protesters and police -- 13 of whom were among those killed after thousands of people attacked a police station in the northwestern district of Sirajganj.
Sunday's casualties brought the death toll to 280 since early July when student protests over the partial reinstatement by the courts of civil service recruitment quotas -- where sought-after government jobs were reserved for supporters of Hasina's ruling Awami League -- erupted into wider, and violent, anti-government unrest.
Government crackdown efforts escalated from tear gas and rubber bullets to live fire, curfews and Internet blackouts bringing hundreds of thousands more people onto the streets demanding change and ultimately Hasina's resignation.
Student organizers had called Sunday for a national non-cooperation government boycott under which people would refuse to pay taxes and utility bills.

🚨𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡!🚨 𝐵𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑞𝑢𝑜𝑡𝑎 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚!!? 🚨 What’s going on?
Hundreds of students are protesting in universities and cities all over Bangladesh!
Things have gotten serious: 6 people have died and over 400 are hurt!
The government is shutting down all universities indefinitely!
🧐 Why?
Unfair job reservations.
Bangladesh brought back a 30% job quota for descendants of 1971 war freedom fighters.
Now, 56% of government jobs are reserved: 30% for freedom fighters' descendants, 10% for districts, 10% for women, 5% for ethnic minorities, and 1% for the physically disabled!
😲𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲: - The students are not against the reservation for women, minorities, and so on, but are against the unjustified 30% quota for freedom fighters’ descendants! - They claim that it lowers the chances of the average Bangladeshi while simultaneously increasing discrimination. - PM Hasina’s Awami League has defended the reservation, stating that it was necessary to honour the sacrifices of the fighters. - Moreover, the party has accused the protesters of being ‘Razakars’, people who collaborated with Pakistan in 1971!!! ❓𝙸̲𝚜̲ ̲𝚜̲𝚞̲𝚌̲𝚑̲ ̲𝚊̲ ̲𝚛̲𝚎̲𝚜̲𝚎̲𝚛̲𝚟̲𝚊̲𝚝̲𝚒̲𝚘̲𝚗̲ ̲𝚛̲𝚎̲𝚊̲𝚕̲𝚕̲𝚢̲ ̲𝚗̲𝚎̲𝚌̲𝚎̲𝚜̲𝚜̲𝚊̲𝚛̲𝚢̲?? Old Jamindar Houses of Nawabganj,Dhaka,Bangladesh
Kolakopa, Nobabganj is one of the districts of Bangladesh which is full of old zamindar houses and architecture. There were a lot of landlords in this village. Two brothers named Bocha Teli and Bodha Teli first started this oil business. Later their house was named “Teli Bari”. Gradually the business expanded and Kolakopa become the heart of the business.
Many old traditional zamindar houses are scattered all over the Panalia village in Kolakopa union. When you walk along the rural road of the village, you will see all these signs of ancient times. In the war of 1971, many landlords left the country cause they couldn’t unable to bear the brutal oppression of Pakistan, and the rest lost their lives. The whole Kolakopa turned into hell. Even today, their descendants carry that terrible memory. Scattered abandoned old houses in different parts of Kalakopa, and broken temples are reminders of that era.

Corey Anderson had always been known for his powerful striking, but he took it to a new level on New Year's Day 2014 when he set what was then the world record for the fastest ODI hundred with a 36-ball blitzkrieg against West Indies in Queenstown. It came at a time, a few months after he scored a century in his second Test, that Anderson was suggesting he was ready to fulfill the potential spotted in him as a teenager.
Anderson, who would not look out of place in the All Blacks' front row, became the youngest New Zealand player to gain a contract when, at 16, he was awarded the deal that Chris Harris declined. Anderson had already appeared for Canterbury the previous year and, within a year, he had played for New Zealand A, as well as in the State final. A left-arm pace bowler and middle-order batsman, Anderson played in the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008 and two years later again made the squad for the tournament, which was held at home in New Zealand.
Anderson made his first-class debut in 2007, but had to wait till 2012 for his maiden first-class century. It was a big hundred, though - 167 against Otago - and soon after that he was included in New Zealand's squad for the Twenty20 international series in South Africa. He didn't do much in that series, and was injured for the subsequent one-dayers - a continuation of fitness issues that have followed him through the early part of his career - but continued to score runs in the domestic season. In 2013, he was included in New Zealand's ODI squad for the Champions Trophy, and made his debut in that format against England in Cardiff.
A Test debut followed later in the year against Bangladesh and he scored a hundred in the second match of the series in Dhaka. Since then, he has established himself as a regular member of the New Zealand side in all three formats, and played a key role in their run to the ODI World Cup final in 2015. He made a strong case to be adjudged the allrounder of the tournament, scoring two half-centuries, including a 58 in the semi-final chase against South Africa, and picking up 14 wickets at 16.71.
In 2021, Anderson made a move to the USA and participated in the Major League Cricket competition subsequently. In 2024, he was selected in USA's T20 World Cup squad.
