When I was nine, I’d pad downstairs to my grandparents‘ every afternoon, just before darkness fell.

I’d nab some biscuits from Nana’s room while he was napping, dig out a book or magazine from the under the coffee table, and flip through the brightly coloured pages as I lay on my stomach on the mosaic bedroom floor or the scarlet living-room rug.

(Nanu would place a little bowl of মুড়ি or a reused Quaker Oatmeal tin of her latest batch of কলার পিঠা next to me. She'd then comfortably curl up in a couch and knit, embroider, or cut up areca nuts, occasionally pausing to answer my curious questions.)

One UK-printed seamstress's guide had over 1,000 pages of beautiful vintage illustrations with endless lists of measurements.

There was this other large, hardbound book on knitting that Nanu had splurged on decades ago. ("Your Nana would've kicked me out if it weren't for the fact that this was a book!") I especially loved the plushie section: pretty photographs wrapped around with instructions written in code that—at that time—only Nanu could read.

Nanu’s shelves had a couple of charming, bangla-translated Russian folktale compilations from my mom's childhood tucked away. I eventually wore them to tatters though I never read a word.

But what I really looked forward to was the latest issue of টুনটুন টিনটিন on Wednesdays, with its movie reviews, science articles—and a section serializing an ‘80s comic adaptation of one of Blyton‘s Famous Five novels, translated in Bangla.

Somehow, I never got to finishing it.

But I remember with perfect clarity the delightful chills running down my spine at reading about kids my age stuck in a creaky cottage with only flickering lamplight for company, uncertainty and possibilities looming in the surrounding mysterious moorlands.

I mentioned that Banana Fish (1985-94 and 2018) strikes me as Bangla-translated Tintin comics meets তিন গোয়েন্দা novels, but really, what it reminds me of most is 2009, just with eleven more years of the weight of the world added: bone-deep heartbreak touched with fragile hope, an unlikely but exhilirating mix of cultures, and living within the vivid colours of a fast-paced '80s thriller.

Salaam!! I've been wanting to connect more to my Bengali heritage by reading stories, accounts, history books, etc, but I can't find anything by Bengali authors. I was wondering if you or your followers have any recs and places to buy them (small bookstores or something). Thank you!!

I'm going to keep this list as concise as possible but apologies if I ramble a bit.

Tahmima Aman

She is a Britsh-Bangladeshi author. Her first book, A Golden Age is set in Bangladesh during the liberation war and is written from the PoV of a widow and mother. The second book, The Good Muslim leads on from the events of A Golden Age; it centres around the woman's children and their attitudes to the military dictatorship of General Hussain Muhammad Ershad. Her third book, The Bones of Grace is less about the war and its aftermath, and more about identity as its about a young girl who was adopted by a Bengali family living in the US. Her books are in english, but I must put some trigger warnings as the books dont shy away from topics such as war, death, rape, abortions, extremism etc.

Fakrul Alam

This second recommendation is of a non-fiction book called, Rabindranath Tagore and National Identity Formation in Bangladesh. I wont lie, it's not the easiest reading and it did take me a while to read the whole thing. It is worth it though, because growing up, you hear a lot about Rabindranath Tagore as there is a lot of national pride surrounding him, this compilation of essays helps to understand the adoration and importance of him to Bengali people. This was especially helpful for me, being a kid that grew up quite detached from the Bengali community for a while. The book is in english

Afsan Chowdhury

This book is written in Bengali, it's called Bisshashghatokgon or The Betrayal. It's a fiction book and it's described, in the author's own words, as being about "the politics of class" but within the context of a newly founded Bangladesh. The book is in Bangla, and I'm not currently aware of any translations. I would recommend looking at Afsan Chowdhury's other work as well, he has a very extensive and impressive repertoire as a journalist and also in terms of job history. His articles can all be found in English.

The following is a link to a collection of some of his articles, he also has more published with Himalmag and Al Jazeera. They make for some interesting reading and provide some good starting points for further reading.

In terms of where to buy these books, I try to use BetterWorldBooks where possible.

But finding Afsan Chowdhury's work and Fakrul Alam's work on there would be difficult, I bought Bissashghatokon from a book store in Bangladesh and I got Fakrul Alam's work on Amazon.

BANGLA LEARNING RESOURCE: Bangla-Tangla

I found a page called Bangla-Tangla that offers a wealth of resources to aid Bangla learners!

Features:

Generates a conjugation table for any verb you plug in

Gives you a few options for Bengali keyboards to download for PC

Offers a couple different Bengali-English dictionaries

Offers a few examples of Bengali annotated works to follow along with (and allows you to practice annotating your own)

Has lists of frequently used words (every day words, words you need to know in order to read the newspaper at 95% comprehension, etc.)

Allows you to read an online Bengali newspaper with the ability to scroll over words to see what they mean. Although this isn’t fully developed quite yet, clicking on these words will forward you to a dictionary that will tell you the word as well.

Offers a downloadable Chrome extension that lets you highlight Bengali words you come across in order see the definition. You can also type words in as well.

Be aware: you need to have at least a basic understanding of the Bengali alphabet to use this. While the instructions are in English, the Bengali words are not romanized; you have to read the Bengali words as they are. I wouldn’t be discouraged by this if you’re learning because it can challenge you, and you can use my romanized alphabet post to help you. You also need to type Bengali words you want using the Bengali script as well. This can be solved by using a Bengali keyboard (you can download one on your phone or PC –I know Apple has one built in) or you can copy-paste from reliable translation websites/blog posts.
