Unlock tales: With 50% rent, storage spaces are a win-win for both tenants and landlords - gurugram
https://liveindiatimes.com/unlock-tales-with-50-rent-storage-spaces-are-a-win-win-for-both-tenants-and-landlords-gurugram/
Exuberant rents, salary deductions, job insecurity — times are tough! So how does one survive in such difficult circumstances? Well, young professionals have found a way by relocating their stuff to storage facility for a month or two, till they return from their home towns.
Social media timelines are filled with posts by professionals offering to keep belongings of others at their rented space for 50% or a lesser amount. Anish Bakshi, who had posted about one such storage facility on a Gurugram group on Facebook, says, “The idea is just to help out people who are being made to pay full rent for their rooms in Gurugram, even though that they are not living here anymore because most organisations have given work from home (as an option or mandate). We are offering storage in our flats. I’ve mostly received enquiries from bachelors who are moving or have already moved to their home towns.”
A 22-year-old marketing manager in Gurugram, Anamika Manhas, sharing her experience, says, “I couldn’t move to the new house and there was a lot of family pressure to return to my home town, Jammu. I flew two days before lockdown. It’s been three months that I’m here now, and all my stuff was at my rented place and the notice period was over too. I couldn’t physically come and move my stuff (clothes, kitchenware, etc). So, when I found out about this service, I felt it was very helpful. I paid around ₹4,000 for a month and my stuff is all safe.”

For Varun Kataria, who owns flats and PGs in Delhi-NCR, storage space has become a means to sustain him during these times. This landlord says, “Jo log Maharashtra, UP se hain woh iss time Gurugram aana safe nahin samajh rahe… People who were living on rent in Delhi-NCR have reached out to me from across the country including Mumbai, UP, and even south India. We sent a vendor to get their luggage picked up, and then confirmed with the owner each item on the check list. After all this checking, we sent a video to the owner on WhatsApp to confirm.”
Aditya Kaushal, a 32-year-old fraud investigator with an MNC in Gurugram, tells us, “I was travelling prior and have been with my family in Jammu since March, and couldn’t go back to Gurugram because of lockdown. There is a huge rent burden wherein I’m not using the premises but still have to pay the rent. My stuff was lying in the house (refrigerator, washing machine, etc.). Initially we had a discussion with the owner about the salary cuts that I had to bear, but the owners didn’t agree to reduce the rent. The only option thus left was to find a storage facility and move our stuff over there. I took help of movers and packers, and a friend helped me too. And now when the landlord saw us vacating it, he thought he’d loose a steady income so offered to reduce the rent by 40% till the time we come back!”
“It’s an equal opportunity for all. There are people like us who don’t want to spend anything like ₹30,000 as monthly rent, when they aren’t even living in these places.” – Kovid Ummat, an advertising professional
Those who are renting out their place for storage are ensuring to share all crucial information in advance, before allocating the space. Kovid Ummat, an advertising professional who is renting his two rooms as storage space, says security is a concern, too. “We ensure that I and the other party share all details prior. Somewhere this came out of our own need, as one of my flatmate had left for Agra before the lockdown. And when we came home, we realised that it was uncertain as to when will WFH stop. The rent was a completely avoidable expenditure at this point. So we guys thought to take out our stuff and put it in a warehouse, and in the process realised that they aren’t many warehouses. This made us open two rooms for people who required this facility. It’s an equal opportunity for all. There are people like us who don’t want to spend anything like ₹30,000 as monthly rent when they aren’t even living in these places.”

IIT Delhi alumni to donate a part of their assets to the institute in their will
IIT Delhi alumni to donate a part of their assets to the institute in their will
The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) has reached out to its alumni and urged them to donate a part of their assets to the institute in their will. As of now, two alumni have pledged to name the institute as a beneficiary in their will. “We have been requesting our alumni, particularly the ones comingfor the Golden Jubilee celebrations, to leave something in their willfor the institute. In a couple of cases, we have already got a response.Ram Matta, from the 1976 batch, said he initially thought of leavingsomething in his will for the Stanford University, but has nowdecided to contribute the amount to IIT-D. However, he hasn’tmentioned how much,” said Sanjeev Sanghi, Dean, Alumni Affairs. “Another alumnus, Ramesh Kapur from the 1968 batch, has said hewould leave one million dollars. Both of them are NRIs living in theUS. It probably works out better for them because according to theirinheritance rules, after a particular amount, if you give your moneyto your children, it’s taxed at 80 percent,” he said. Alumni also contribute to the institutes by making the donations. For example, Kapur has pledged a scholarship of INR 2.4 crores for the students who are coming from a financially challenged background. Another alumnus, Amarjeet Bakshi from the 1968 batch has given INR 1 crore to the institute and has pledged to donate the same amount by for the next 10 years. “Saurabh Mittal, based in Singapore, has pledged to give Rs 10 crore for an indoor stadium,” said Sanghi. The institute is also in the process of setting up an ‘Alumni Endowment Fund’. “The interest and earnings from these funds will be used by the institute wherever it wants,” Sanghi said.

Lal Chowk
Lal Chowk is a city square in Srinagar in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. Lal Chowk was named so by Left-wing activists inspired by the Russian Revolution as they fought Maharaja Hari Singh. It is a traditional place for political meetings with Jawaharlal Nehru, Jammu & kashmir first Prime Minister, Sheikh Abdullah, Kashmir's first premier and various other Kashmiri leaders having addressed people from it.
History
It was at Lal chowk that Jawaharalal Nehru unfurled the national flag in 1948. It was here that he promised Kashmiris a referendum to choose their political future. It was in Lal Chowk that Sheikh Abdullah announced his love for Jawaharlal Nehru and India in a Persian couplet saying “Man Tu Shudi, Tu Man Shudi, Ta Kas Na Goyed, Man Degram Tu Degri (I became you and You became I; so none can say we are separate)”.
On 2 November 1947 that Nehru, standing beside Abdullah, addressed thousands and said “The fate of Kashmir will ultimately be decided by the people. We have given that pledge and Maharaja (Hari Singh) had supported it. It is not only a pledge to the people of Kashmir but to the world. We will not, and cannot back out of it,” promised Nehru. Although this is conditional to Pakistan withdrawing troops from the then-Princely state.
Lal Chowk fire
The 1993 Lal Chowk fire refers to the arson attack on the main commercial center of downtown Srinagar, Kashmir that took place on 10 April 1993. The fire is alleged to be started by a crowd incited by militants, while civilians and police officials interviewed by Human Rights Watch and other organisations allege that the Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) didn't provide enough protection to the building and did not allow the police to rescue of people, apparently in retaliation for the burning of an abandoned BSF building by local residents.
Clock tower
The Clock Tower gained political significance in 1992 when the then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Murli Manohar Joshi came to hoist the Tricolour atop the tower on Republic Day. Joshi’s move brought several militant groups together, uniting them against India. Joshi hoisted the flag in the company of soldiers. He was whisked away when a rocket fired by Pakistani-backed militants landed some metres away from the tower. Since then, the BSF and the CRPF undertook the hoisting ceremony until 2009 when they announced it was unnecessary to continue the ritual because the tower “had no political significance” and an official function was held at the nearby Bakshi Stadium on Republic day and Independence day anyway.
