One of the Team sent me this in DM--Sarah Holden seems to be at Midhope Castle, where they film Outlander! 😊 Turn up the volume on her IG story, and you can hear the SAME bagpipes that were playing at Midhope Castle. Go to both accounts and compare the bagpipes.
Tumblr media
You can hear the bagpipes in Sarah's IG story playing faintly in the background. 👇
And the bagpiper here, playing the same thing at Midhope Castle hahaha 👇 Gee, what a coinky dink. 🤗
Tumblr media
Here's the video of it. 👇
instagram
Now let's see if Mr. Sam Heughan posts something from there...
PS. I added this comment afterwards since I already got a comment asking how do we know it's the same bagpipes. There aren't just random bagpipers walking around Scotland playing for no reason. Bagpipes are for special occasions. It would be a HUGE coincidence that on the same day that bagpipes are played at Midhope Castle, which is associated with Sam Heughan due to Outlander, you can also hear bagpipes playing outside rumored girlfriend, Sarah Holden's car. What special event could be happening right outside Sarah's car that would warrant bagpipes playing on a Monday? C'mon now. JS

The Yoons want us stop using Flower of Scotland- it must never be allowed to happen.
There is nothing more stirring than this!
#AsOne.
Where else in the world can they put a musician in such a position to get the crowd going like this?
Name another instrument that can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

No good reason for publishing this, but I have been listening to part of my collection of Medieval and renaissance music CDs including a wonderful set of bagpipe pieces by three groups specializing in early music: Piffaro out of Philadelphia, Ciramella from USC in LA, and our local Folger Consort.
The bagpipes were once a staple of European music from Spain and Portugal to at least as far east as Poland at a time when there was less distinction between popular music and "cultivated tastes." With the "sophistication" of the modern era, the pipes have been driven away from all but occasional folk music performances and now are mostly relegated to folk music on the western fringes of Europe - especially Galicia in Spain, Ireland and Scotland. The gradual abandonment of the bagpipe in European music would be a fascinating study of "modernization." Alas, I am ill equipped to research or write it, and I am nor really aware of anyone who might.

This is one of my favourite pieces, 'The Gravedigger's Suite'. Natural C and F to give it a darker feel and played on Smallpipes in the key of A. From 'Off the Beat 'n Track' by the Lonely Busker

A Brief History of the Kilt
Before diving into the contemporary-day attraction of kilts, it’s essential to apprehend their rich history. Kilts originated within the Scottish Highlands for the duration of the sixteenth century as a full-period garment called the "belted plaid." The traditional utility kilt, as we know it today, developed inside the early 18th century, becoming shorter and extra tailored to the wearer’s frame, which allowed for extra mobility. Worn through Highland warriors and Scottish clansmen, kilts represented a practical answer for shifting through the rugged terrain of Scotland while also showcasing the wearer’s allegiance to a specific clan via the tartan sample of the cloth.
In the 21st century, kilts are still worn in formal settings like weddings, Highland video games, and army parades, however they're additionally being embraced as an elegant opportunity to wear pants and jeans. Whether made from traditional woolen tartan or cutting-edge fabrics like denim, kilts have come to be extra versatile than ever.

Piper Daniel Laidlaw of The King’s Own Scottish Borderers was born on July 26th 1875.
Tumblr media
The men of the 7th King’s Own Scottish Borderers (K.S.O.B.) were under heavy shell fire the morning of September 25, 1915. If that was not enough to unnerve the soldiers, a cloud of poison gas began to drift over their position. A few of the men began to cough and choke and many succumbed rapidly to the effects of the gas. The remainder were shaken by the disturbing images they saw.
Tumblr media
Piper Laidlaw, seeing that his company was shaken with the effects of gas, with complete disregard for danger, mounted the parapet and, marching up and down, playing “All the Blue Bonnets Over the Border.” The effect of his bravery was immediate and the company dashed to the assault. Piper Laidlaw continued playing his pipes even after he was wounded and until the position was won.
Tumblr media
He later achieved the rank of sergeant-piper. His medals are on display on the 5th floor of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Only one other piper was awarded a Victoria Cross during the First World War, the Scottish-born Canadian soldier James Cleland Richardson.
