I'm glad to see posts circulating listing some of the significant legislation Tim Walz has supported as governor of Minnesota, but there's one I haven't seen mentioned yet that I think is really important for young voters to know about--the North Star Promise program, aka the reason I can afford to finish my Bachelor's degree.
Some of you may remember me posting about my financial aid offer being a lot more generous this year. That because Minnesota just implemented a scholarship program that makes undergraduate college tuition free for students with family incomes of less than $80,000 attending state or tribal colleges. As in, if after other grants and scholarships have been applied, you still owe money for tuition, the state of Minnesota will pay the rest.
Obviously tuition isn't the only expense associated with being a college student--I still am taking out student loans to help cover things like rent and other cost of living expenses--but it is the biggest one. As a low-income, non-traditional student paying my own way through college (and with a disabled partner who cannot work), I was genuinely unsure if I was going to be able to finish my degree before the North Star Promise program was implemented, and it has freed me from so much stress and worry.
A lot of factors had to combine to make a program like this possible --activists had to push for it, Minnesota had to vote in a Democratic majority in the state legislature to pass it, and we had to have a governor willing to sign the program into law--but it is still significant it was something Walz was willing to put his name on. And I cannot fathom how many lives it would change if he was willing to push for something similar to this at the federal level. So, keeping in mind that we have to vote up and down the ballot as well as keep the pressure on our elected officials to support programs like this once folks are in office, let's make it happen.
#highly recommend people look into all the good things minnesota has done in the past legislative session honestly#but this is one in particular that has actively changed my life for the better so i figured it was worth saying a bit about

I saw this post today and it reminded me of something library related I want to talk about.
As someone with a bachelor's degree in English and as someone who's working on a Master's in Library Science, this is something I'm quite used to. And this exact belief is what makes me so upset about a lot of recent legislation in regards to librarianship. Take Arkansas's Act 372 from last year as an example. Act 372 makes it illegal for librarians to "knowingly" distribute "obscene material" to minors. But it does not define obscene material, and leaves things very open for people to challenge, say, frequently challenged material dealing with race and sexuality. But crucially, this act also overrode most libraries' current policies on book challenges. So previously and in general, most libraries would receive a challenge on a book, and that challenge would be taken to a committee including library personnel, usually a children's staff member specifically. Those people would read the book and determine if it should be banned, or honestly more commonly, relocated to the adult section. (Most librarians and adjacent personnel really want books to be available no matter what, and are pretty anti-censorship overall, so this is the more common answer.)
But under Act 372, if that process outlined above results in the book being kept where it is, the person challenging it can then go to the "governing body of the city or county" and appeal. The act states that the city or county's decision is "final."
So basically, what this means is that if a committee of librarians, aka people who have gotten that Master's Degree in Library Science, have taken the time and effort to learn the best practices of the field and become experts in it, some of whom also have doctorates or other specialized degrees in the field, if that committee of trained and certified librarians decides a book should stay on the shelf, but then a committee of people who work for the city the library is in and are in no way trained or knowledgeable about the best practices of librarianship, can then get this book removed from the shelves. And that decision will be final.
This act was added to the Arkansas constitution, but it hasn't actually taken effect, because a bunch of libraries got together to file an injunction. These libraries are going to court in December of this year (2024) to revisit this law and challenge Sections 1 (to ask them to define obscene material) and 5 (to ask them to reconsider having the city or county as the final say.) All there really is to do is support your local libraries.
And this isn't just an Arkansas problem. There's a similar bill in Alabama, California, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oklahoma again, Oklahoma one more time, and many more tracked by the American Library Association. I don't really have much of a call to action about it to end this post, because I don't really want to spread fear or make people think that if only they did something, this would all stop. All you really can do is support your libraries and call your local legislators if you're someone who's able to.
The point of this post isn't to make people afraid or mad at the state of the world or anything, it's just to complain, really, about the idea that there is literally already a system in place for people to challenge books and a fair committee of trained people ready to handle that. It's frustrating that people don't understand this is already a skilled trade that people spend time and money developing and creating a career in. And it's one thing when it's just a couple of people on the street telling you that you should just be a librarian with an English degree, but it's another entirely when it's legislation. And that's not even to mention that most of this legislation is also attacking diversity in books. But that's a whole other rant.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk!
#support libraries#public libraries#librarian#library rant#thanks for reading this ranting about my job#which i LOVE being a librarian but yeah

SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY MANIFESTO 2024 SUMMARY
cw: extreme transphobia
ok story time. after thatcher happened the labour party elected a left-wing leader to try stop her. four labour MPs left the party in protest and formed the SDP. they formed a non-aggression pact with the Liberal Party, and after a couple years voted in favour of merging to form the Liberal Democrats. one of the four founders disagreed with the merger and founded a new party, calling it the SDP again and acting like it was the rightful successor. after a year or two the continuation party had been destroyed at every little election it had tried to fight, and it voted in favour of disbanding. however, a few activists disagreed with the disbanding and founded a new party, calling it the SDP AGAIN and acting like it was the rightful successor. this second continuation, this third SDP is what survives today
when reading about this party thirty years later, i’d found descriptions that they had become ‘economically left-wing but socially right-wing’ and tbh, i took them at their word. i were told they were communitarians, using traditionalist conservative moral frameworks to promote social democratic economics. that description is very, very wrong
this manifesto is deeply fascistic
i was expecting a couple of yikes moments, especially about trans people, and while there is truly an avalanche of transphobia and trans-hostile policy proposals, the fascistic nature is all over the place, especially on migration, hypernationalism and security. they are beyond Likud on some security matters – if the IRA came back under the SDP we’d be living in a hypermilitarised apartheid state before you can say boyfanny
the reason i’m covering this manifesto is because they’re comfortably the sixth largest party in terms of seats contested at 122, narrowly behind the workers’ party (though they have a suite of endorsed independents). i want you to look at this atrocity. i want you to see the number of votes they get in these 122 seats and despair. this is your country, this is your fascism
💷ECONOMY
abolish housing benefits

ban the NHS using any language other than english or welsh. whoops looks like they forgot to include BSL
the manifesto includes a whiny “charter” on “academic freedom”
mandatory one mile walk every day in schools
require international students to take a strict english test before being offered a place
“public funding of culture, media and sports organisations will be conditional on those organisations respecting the principles of balance and free speech. institutions that fail to do so, by censoring artefacts, promoting sectarian agendas or deterring people from civil discourse, will have funding withdrawn”
rewrite the PSHE curriculum to prioritise “parenting and household management”
🏠HOUSING
“the fundamental aim of national housing policy shall be to ensure that young people seeking to start a family will be able to find a suitable home in which to do so”

discriminate in favour of the married and veterans for council and social housing
suspend but later reintroduce right to buy with a one-in-one-out clause
ban buy-to-let
👮FORCE
“restore the offence of sedition and actively use this law to pursue those who incite terrorism overtly or covertly, or who act in flagrant support of the UK’s enemies”
abolish the supreme court and transfer its powers to the house of lords, which due to reform will be more politically partisan
leave the UN refugee convention
abolish the human rights act
abolish the european convention on human rights
leave the council of europe
surge defence spending
surge funding for MI5 and the NCA
surge police funding and pursue an aggressive broken windows policy
double all sentences for violent crime, and for any repeat offence
mandatory minimum of ten years after three serious offences
mandatory hard labour for parolees for two years after release

any legally resident non-citizen to be deported for “any act considered materially hostile to Britain’s social peace”
“prisons will become safe, orderly institutions - whatever it takes”

“promote a generation-long cessation of mass migration”
cease all aid for ukraine
🌱CLIMATE ?

ban ALL pharmacological care for trans minors
ban trans women using women’s shelters
ban trans participation in sports competition
force trans prisoners to be incarcerated at the prison for the opposite sex
all public sector DEI to be stopped, so goes the policy
introduce a bad internet bill, require id for porn sites, require all tech companies to “promote free speech”

Flirting is illegal in NYC !!!
Landon's bill passed in 1902, "aimed at the flirters, gigglers, mashers, and makers of goo-goo eyes in public."
I'm sorry this is so funny. I can totally see Foggy suing Matt—
Okay. OKAY.
I spent way too much time on my lunch break trying to figure out what was actually going on here, legally.
Here is the language of the proposed bill, which was supposedly passed in 1902:
Any person who is intoxicated in a public place, or who shall by any offensive or disorderly act or language, annoy or interfere with any person or persons in any place or with the passengers of any public stage, railroad car or ferryboat, or who shall disturb or offend the occupants of such conveyance by any disorderly act or language or display, although such conduct may not amount to an assault or battery, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
Notably, violations would result in a fine of $500.
As you may notice, this law says nothing about flirting specifically.
However, according to sources, the intent behind this law, proposed by State Assemblyman Francis G. Landon, was as you noted, "aimed at the flirters, gigglers, mashers, and makers of goo-goo eyes in public. We have all been disgusted with them . . . so they must be brought to their senses."
(Another assemblyman, poor William Bennett, apparently received flack for the proposed bill as well, and denied any association: "I want to assure the bachelors in my district that I do not entertain the objections to this innocent amusement which have been attributed to me. There is no occasion for their excitement, at least so far as my position is concerned.")
However, I have not been able to actually find the code for that law, so I'm scratching my head over this.
Multiple articles also talk about a law with a $25 fine against men “looking at a woman in that way.” (A second offense would require the male to wear a pair of "hose-blinders" when out for a stroll.) But I haven't been able to discern whether that is connected to the previous proposed bill, other than the fact that it appears that this "looking at a woman" law was also passed in 1902. And I haven't been able to find the code for that law, either.
So...are either of these laws real? If so, why can't I find their code? Can anyone else find their code? HELP.
Anyway, assuming these laws are real....
Foggy might threaten to sign a citation against Matt, but Matt would reply that: a) he is not intoxicated; b) nothing he is doing is offensive or disorderly; and c) he is not annoying or interfering with anyone (he would want to argue that Foggy actually likes whatever he's doing), and d) he is not on a public stage, railroad car, or ferryboat. Matt would argue that even if the intent is to prohibit making "goo-goo eyes," etc., this intent was not codified, and interpreting the code as prohibiting goo-goo eyes, etc., would render the entire code void for vagueness per the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments.
He might also argue, under the other law, that Foggy is not "a woman" (although, to my knowledge after some very cursory research, there's no statutory definition of what a "woman" is in New York). He might also argue that this other code is also void for vagueness, because "that way" (as in, the way a man is not allowed to look at a woman) is undefined.
He might also argue that, as someone with NLP, he can't make "goo-goo eyes" at any particular person (which is the only specific action mentioned in the legislative intent behind the code). He might argue that if the law intends to criminalize other forms of flirting in addition to making "goo-goo eyes," that would also render the law void for vagueness, because what are those actions and how is he supposed to know what they are to avoid them? Similarly, as for the other code, he might argue that even if Foggy were a woman, he can't "look" at him.
#legal#matt murdock#foggy nelson#this was a spectacular waste of time thank you all for indulging me#daredevil#asks#ask me things i'm friendly

The Indigenous Brazilian attorney bringing the village to the court
Samara Pataxó studied law so she could help her relatives. Years later, Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin asked her to coordinate the Supreme Electoral Court’s diversity and inclusion area. She encourages Indigenous people, Black people and women to ‘open roads’ by occupying spaces of power
She knew the weight of those five minutes. “I’d made a specific script to speak for 15 minutes, along with another to speak for 10, a script for five, and one for three minutes. I thought: ‘What can I say that is remarkable, that provides a technical contribution as well as the words of the Indigenous peoples?’” Three years after the day she made her first oral argument before Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court, in the early stages of hearings on a proposed historic cut-off point for demarcation of Indigenous territories, Indigenous attorney Samara Pataxó, from her in her small office at the Supreme Electoral Court in Brasília, shared details with SUMAÚMA from that day on September 1, 2021, that defined her life and her career.
Pataxó, born in Coroa Vermelha Village, in the state of Bahia, has worked at the Supreme Electoral Court since 2022, in a position created by Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin. The 34-year-old attorney, who holds a master’s and is now pursuing a doctorate in law, is the first Indigenous person to join a higher court in Brazil. The 2024 municipal elections are the second vote she is watching from her post, after making her debut in the tumultuous 2022 presidential contest. She has since stayed on as the chief inclusion and diversity adviser at the Supreme Electoral Court. Justices Alexandre de Moraes and Carmen Lúcia, who succeeded Fachin as chief justices on the electoral court, decided to keep her in the role.
The historic cut-off point legislation is a legal argument created by the ruralist lobby and predatory agribusiness whereby territory can only be demarcated if the Indigenous people claiming it were occupying the land on October 5, 1988, the day when Brazil’s Constitution was enacted. The Federal Supreme Court has already ruled it unconstitutional and has said it ignores the history of extermination and persecution perpetrated against Brazil’s original peoples. It has been Samara’s subject of study since she graduated with a bachelor’s in law from the Federal University of Bahia.
As an amicus curiae (a Latin expression meaning friend of the court, an attorney who provides support to the decision-making body during a trial), Samara was representing the United Movement of Indigenous Peoples and Organizations of Bahia that day in oral arguments before the Supreme Court. Justice Luiz Fux, the chief justice at the time, decided that each attorney would only have five minutes to speak. Because of the covid-19 pandemic, arguments were held virtually, over Zoom, and broadcast life on TV Justiça. Samara was locked in her Colina complex dorm room at University of Brasília. The grandeur of the moment was not lost through the screen. Her white headdress sat in contrast to her pitch-black hair, lying long and straight, a necklace of red seeds and the Pataxó feather earrings she was wearing that special day – and still frequently wears – stood out sharply against her white shirt. It was a strong image. She spoke eloquently.

I actually fled Utah to Oregon in April of last year due to both knowing a bill such as this was on the cusp of being made law, as well as a nice slice of DV.
Before I transitioned, I actually went to BYU-I for a bachelors in PoliSci which allowed me both great insight into ongoing Utah legislative talks, as well as a couple "little birds" on capitol hill that let me know what was going down behind closed doors.
The thing is, Utah has NEVER been tolerant towards LGBTQ+ people thanks in no part to the giant Mormon hand using them as a puppet. Problem is, the Mormon church isn't filled with just raving lunatics, but Machiavellian chess masters who work day and night to make sure that A) people underestimate them, and B) that their hold on the state government remains undetected and unchallenged. The Church and their hand puppets in the legislator know that any law they push, whether overtly or discretely, will put a spotlight on both parties, meaning they can't pull of major changes without risking the Federal Government bringing the hammer down on their "Special Relationship".
So what do they do? Simple: they play the long game. They wait till other states pass Draconian Laws that impact whoever the Church wants to see fall. You can actively see this being done after Florida passed the Don't Say Gay bill, in fact. A lot of ears in Utah perked up when that piece of drek got past, and the church would very much like to see a similar bill passed in Utah.
Of course, ever since I fled, I've basically lost a lot of my inroads into what is going on there, but if things continue as they have been, more then likely Utah will continue to twist the screws over the next few years, probably going for an outright ban in 2025 depending on how well each step goes. The simple fact is that Utah is playing a very long game against those they deem as "sub-human" and unless a massive backlash forms throughout the states (Say, a blue tidal wave in 2024), they're going to keep inching towards their goal until they have enough established law that they can go in for the kill.
TLDR: Don't underestimate Utah's moves here. They know exactly what they are doing, and their end goal in all of this is a complete purge of all "undesirables" in the state.
Utah will become the third state to restrict trans persons from using bathrooms in buildings other than schools, alongside Florida and North Dakota. However, the legislation in Utah is of a different caliber as North Dakota’s bill only applies to correctional facilities and dorms and Florida’s legislation only applies to government-owned buildings.
In accordance with the bill, trans individuals could also be charged with voyeurism and/or criminal trespass if they use publicly owned bathrooms that align with their gender. According to Utah’s law, these class B Misdemeanors are punishable with up to six months in jail and a fine starting at $1,000 if charged and convicted.
