what is the difference btwn landscape architecture and architecture? =D
So architects design buildings and landscape architects design basically anything outside of those buildings. Public parks & squares, private gardens, Parking spaces, sidewalks and much more.
Landezine is a website where you can find a lot of notable projects & get an idea for what landscape architects plan. Looking in the 'projects' section on there will usually show you a pretty diverse range of projects from different studios.
In university we do have classes together with architecture students, tough that's mostly for basic design & drawing stuff. Most of my classes are specific to outside areas, like 'plant planning' (which plants work for certain areas and how can I include them in those areas?) or 'garden monument care' (researching a historic outdoor space/park/garden by taking stock of what is there right now and finding sources on its history, then evaluating the current state in regards to the original plans / historic layers, and then deciding what needs to be done to honor the history but also make it suitable for the current conditions and use)
#landscape architecture#The planning for certain places is usually decided through competitions#Where multiple studios will create their own design for the space and then present that through drawn plans. Digital or physical models.#And sketches / collages / photoshopped images#Buuut im not even sure I want to work for a studio like that in the future. It's supposedly very crunch-y/overtime heavy when it comes to#Competition deadlines#And theres plenty of other areas you can go in#Like im still in my bachelor program so ofc there's a bit of everything in there#But with the landscape architecture master you can pick your classes to focus on certain topics or even do a different masters program#Depends on what the universities have to offer. I've seen something along the lines of#'city planning in historic city districts'#As an example#Yah that's preddy much the basics#From someone who didn't know landscape architects even existed until they saw it#On a list of a universitys available bachelor programs

Timing is of the Essence
In Timing is of the Essence, you combine different bits of music into a sequence to solve a puzzle. The correct sequence opens up the path to the next segment of the game while adding a new instrument every time. Reach the end and sit back as the completion pushes the game world and the music to its climax, revealing the harmony between the sequenced sounds and the in-game world!
This prototype (vertical slice) of a game is my final submission and what got me my bachelor’s degree as a Games Programmer. I tried bringing the focus of the project towards both Game Design and Music, as I am both fascinated by Game Design and a musician (pianist) and in love with music-based games.
It began with a simple quote: “Make a game that uses music as a core element”. I took this idea to the next level, by eliminating any music-based game that could be played without any sound on (Guitar Hero, Piano Tiles, you get the idea).
What I ended up with was a beat sequencer that I would use as core mechanic of the game. The goal of the game is to solve puzzles in form of sequences. By interacting with the cubes in the game, you place them in the sequencer, which will then play them in order. Finding the correct sequence will unlock the next part of the world.
The project was seen as both fun and innovative, as games that use a sequencer as core mechanic do not currently exist (as of 2022).

Ch.2
______________________________________________________________
Chapter 1: Welcome to the Wolffs
Y/n Müller had always been driven by a deep sense of creativity and a desire to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. Growing up in a bilingual household in Stuttgart, she had developed a passion for languages and cultures, seamlessly switching between German and English. This dual heritage had given her a unique perspective and a love for connecting with people from diverse backgrounds.
When it came time to choose a field of study, Y/n followed her heart and enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts program, majoring in Media Design. She was drawn to the world of visual storytelling, believing that design could shape perceptions and inspire change. Her coursework was rigorous, covering everything from graphic design to video production, but Y/n thrived in the academic environment.
However, as graduation approached, Y/n found herself at a crossroads. While she loved the theoretical aspects of her studies, she longed for a more hands-on role where she could apply her knowledge in real-life situations. She had worked part-time as a nanny throughout her university years, discovering a natural talent for engaging with children and creating enriching experiences for them.
One evening, while scrolling through job postings, Y/n stumbled upon an advertisement that caught her eye:
______________________________________________________________
WE ARE HIRING
a live-in nanny position for a family in Monaco. bilingual background (German and English)
Job description: A high-profile family deeply embedded in motorsports is looking for a bilingual nanny who can travel with them fully and adjust to a dynamic lifestyle.
Required skills: Background in early childhood care.
Job Location: Monaco (base)
______________________________________________________________
It didn't say who that family was, but since she was a new motorsports fan, she had recently started watching "Drive to Survive" on Netflix, it only had 2 Seasons and she just started on episode 3 of season 1. All that she knew about motorsports she got from Drive to Survive but there are so many different categories, not only Formula 1. So she decided she may not know who they were anyway.
But that docuseries had piqued her interest, offering a glimpse into the thrilling and often dramatic world of F1 racing, full of fascinating stories, personalities, and grown men that could be so petty and childish sometimes. Between the drama and the drivers, she felt like watching an episode of "The Real Housewives" shows. Not to forget the lifestyle that comes with motorsports.
She felt an instant connection with the Mercedes team, even though they were hardly spoken about in the first season, since she was born in Stuttgart and everyone knows how interconnected that city is with the brand.
That's why her heart raced so fast as she read the listing. It seemed too good to be true! The chances that I really was anything remotely connected with the Show was slim but she still had a good feeling about it.
It also was just a chance to combine her creative background, passion for nurturing children, and newfound love for motorsports while experiencing life in an entirely new and glamorous setting, knowing that the family had wealth seeing as they live in Monaco.
The more she thought about it, the more it seemed like the perfect opportunity. All those factors drove her to apply for the job.
Working for that prominent family would allow her to make a significant impact on a kid's life, providing him or her as nanny a stable and loving presence amidst their busy lives.
The role also offered her professional and personal growth, which a traditional design job might not provide. At least not in that capacity.
And the opportunity to travel with the family in their fast-paced world and manage the challenges of a high-profile household would push her out of her comfort zone and help her develop a diverse skill set.
Plus, the exciting idea of living in Monaco, a city known for its beauty and sophistication, was too tempting to pass up.
She could immerse herself in a new culture, build a global network, and create unforgettable memories. Her twenties were here so she could explore herself and the world so what better way than to travel and make friends.
She could always go back to her design background if she was getting tired of childcare. With her, you would never know.
Being highly interested in the job opening Y/n sent out her resume and a cover letter. Still not knowing who the family is. But she really didn't care who those people were as long as they were nice.
______________________________________________________________
I am writing to express my interest in the nanny position for your family. With a strong background in Media Design and over five years of experience in childcare, I am confident in my ability to provide a nurturing and enriching environment for your child. My bilingual skills and creative approach to education make me uniquely suited to support your family’s needs.
My experience includes designing engaging, educational activities that support children’s cognitive and emotional development. I am adept at managing busy schedules, coordinating travel, and maintaining the highest standards of discretion and professionalism. I believe my dedication and adaptability align well with the high standards you seek in a nanny.
I was born in Stuttgart, Germany, to a German mother and an American father, which afforded me the advantage of being raised bilingual in German and English. This multicultural background has not only enhanced my communication skills but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for diverse cultures. I am passionate about traveling and eager to learn from new environments, which I believe will enrich my role as a nanny.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to your family’s well-being.
Kind regards,
Y/n Müller
______________________________________________________________
When Y/n sent off her application, she felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. She had poured her heart into the cover letter, hoping her passion and experience would shine through. The following days were a whirlwind of emotions and activities as she waited for a response.
During those two weeks, Y/n kept herself busy to manage the anticipation. She continued her part-time nanny job, investing extra effort into creating engaging activities for the children she looked after. She also worked on freelance design projects, hoping to bolster her portfolio in case she needed to pivot back to her design career.
Y/n spent time with friends and family, sharing her hopes about the potential job in Monaco. They encouraged her, but the waiting was still nerve-wracking. Every time her phone buzzed, her heart raced, thinking it might be an email from the Wolff family.
To prepare herself for a possible interview, Y/n researched more about Monaco and the world of motorsports. She watched documentaries, read articles, and familiarized herself with the different sports leagues and key figures, hoping to impress the family with her knowledge if given the chance.
When the invitation for a video interview finally arrived, Y/n was both nervous and hopeful. The email's subject line made her heart skip a beat. She quickly opened it and read through the details, feeling a surge of excitement. She was thrilled to finally meet the family and get to know them, but also anxious about making a good impression.
______________________________________________________________
Dear Y/n,
We hope this email finds you well. Thank you for your interest in the nanny position with our family. We were delighted to receive your application and are impressed by your qualifications and enthusiasm.
Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are Toto and Susie Wolff, deeply involved in the world of motorsport. Toto serves as the Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, while Susie is a former racing driver and currently the CEO of ROKiT Venturi Racing in Formula E. Our careers require a significant amount of travel and flexibility, which is why we are seeking a reliable, creative, and adaptable nanny to assist in caring for our son, Jack.
Jack is a lively and curious three-year-old who loves exploring new things and learning through play. We are seeking someone who can not only care for him but also foster his love for learning and creativity. Your background in Media Design caught our attention, as we believe your creative skills can help make Jack’s experiences both fun and educational. Your bilingual ability is also a big plus, knowing you can speak both English and German with him.
We have scheduled a video interview with you to further discuss this opportunity. The interview will take place on January 12th at 3 PM. You can join the call using the following link: [Video Call Link].
During the interview, we would like to discuss your experience, your approach to childcare, and how you envision supporting Jack’s development. Additionally, we welcome any questions you may have about our family and Jack’s routine.
We hope you are as excited about this opportunity as we are about the prospect of having you join our family. Please let us know if you have any questions or need further information before the interview.
We look forward to speaking with you soon.
Warm regards,
Toto and Susie Wolff
______________________________________________________________
When Y/n received the email, her eyes widened in surprise and excitement as she read through it. She had been anxiously awaiting a response, but she never imagined that the family she had applied to work for was as prestigious as the Wolffs. She quickly reread the introduction, her heart racing.
"Wow," she whispered to herself. "Toto and Susie Wolff? This is incredible."
The significance of the opportunity began to sink in. Toto Wolff, the Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, and Susie Wolff, a former racing driver and the CEO of ROKiT Venturi Racing in Formula E, were offering her a chance to be part of their world. She felt a mixture of awe and determination.
Y/n couldn't help but smile as she thought about little Jack, imagining the lively and curious three-year-old they described. She was thrilled that her background in Media Design had caught their attention and that they saw the potential for her creative skills to enrich Jack’s experiences. Knowing they appreciated her bilingual ability gave her an added boost of confidence.
"January 12th at 3 PM," she murmured, making a mental note of the interview date and time. She clicked the video call link to ensure it worked, not wanting to leave anything to chance.
Her mind buzzed with a hundred thoughts at once. She needed to prepare thoroughly for the interview, making sure she could articulate her experience and vision for supporting Jack's development. She also wanted to prepare insightful questions to show her genuine interest in their family and lifestyle.
Y/n felt a surge of excitement mixed with a hint of nerves. This opportunity was bigger than she had anticipated, but she was determined to make the most of it. She took a deep breath, feeling a wave of gratitude wash over her.
"This is it," she thought. "This could be the start of something truly amazing."
She immediately set to work, planning her preparations for the interview. She wanted to be ready to impress Toto and Susie Wolff, knowing that this was a chance to combine her passions for childcare, creativity, and cultural exploration in an extraordinary way.
The night before the interview, Y/n rehearsed her answers to potential questions and prepared thoughtful questions of her own. She set up her laptop in her parents' house in Stuttgart, double-checked her internet connection, and ensured her surroundings were neat and professional. If this interview didn’t work out, she reminded herself, she could always fall back on her design background. But deep down, she knew how much she wanted this opportunity.
______________________________________________________________
She took a deep breath and clicked the link to join the video call.
The screen flickered, and soon she found herself face-to-face with Toto and Susie Wolff. Y/n had done a quick search on them prior to the interview, discovering their significant influence in the motorsports world, but she still didn’t know the full extent of their prominence.
“Hello, Y/n. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Susie said with a warm smile.
“Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Wolff. Thank you for this opportunity. Es freut mich sehr, dass wir die Möglichkeit haben, so miteinander zu kommunizieren (I am very pleased that we have the opportunity to communicate with each other like this),” Y/n replied, trying to keep her nerves in check.
“Please, call us Toto and Susie,” Toto said, his tone friendly and welcoming. “We’ve read through your application and were very impressed. Why don’t you tell us a bit more about yourself?”
Y/n began to explain her background in Media Design, her passion for working with children, and how she believed her creative skills would be beneficial in engaging and educating their son, Jack. She also mentioned her bilingual abilities and her experience growing up in Stuttgart.
Susie nodded thoughtfully. “We think your background is quite unique and would bring a fresh perspective to Jack’s upbringing. How do you feel about traveling frequently and adapting to different environments?”
“I’m very excited about the opportunity to travel,” Y/n said. “I think it would be an amazing experience for both Jack and me. I’m adaptable and eager to learn about new cultures and environments. Traveling has always been a passion of mine, although I haven’t had the opportunity to see and learn as much as I would like to until now.”
Toto leaned forward slightly. “One thing to consider is the nature of our lifestyle. It can be fast-paced and demanding. How comfortable are you with managing stress and maintaining flexibility?”
“I’m confident in my ability to handle stress and stay organized,” Y/n replied. “My studies and previous nanny jobs have taught me how to manage my time effectively and stay calm under pressure. Zudem möchte ich auch nochmal anführen, dass ich eben deutsch bin. Es liegt mir also eigentlich im Blut immer pünktlich zu sein und mein Leben gut zu managen. (I would also like to mention again that I am German. So it's actually in my blood to always be punctual and to manage my life well.)”
The last part was meant as a joke, but Toto and Susie knew she fully meant it.
Y/N paused before she asked a question she was eager to get an answer to. “I am very sorry to tell you I don’t really know about your work background and I was not comfortable googling the both of you so if you don’t mind what exactly do you do? Also, you spoke about traveling how often would that be and when would you like to have Jack with you guys?” It was a long question but she was confident they would answer her fully.
Susie and Toto exchanged a quick glance, their smiles warm and understanding. They appreciated her directness and respect for their privacy.
Susie spoke first, her tone friendly. "No worries at all, Y/n. I’m a former racing driver and currently the CEO of ROKiT Venturi Racing in Formula E. My role involves overseeing the team’s operations, strategy, and ensuring we’re competitive in the championship. It’s a dynamic and demanding job, but one I’m very passionate about."
Toto nodded, adding with a hint of enthusiasm, "And I’m the team principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. It’s an intense job, managing the team and ensuring we perform at our best during the racing season. So, as you can imagine, our schedules can be quite demanding and involve a fair bit of travel."
Susie continued, "Regarding travel, we do move around quite a bit, especially during the racing season, which runs from March to December. There are races almost every other week, and they happen all over the world. We'd love to have Jack with us during these travels, but it depends on the location and the duration of our stay."
Toto chimed in, "Ideally, we'd like him to join us for the major races and during the summer break when the schedule is a bit lighter. It's important to us that he experiences different cultures and environments, but we also want to ensure he has stability in his education and routine. We’re looking for someone who can help maintain that balance for him."
Susie nodded, "Exactly. We want Jack to feel secure and supported, no matter where we are. Your role would be crucial in providing that stability while also making the experience enjoyable and enriching for him."
Y/n listened carefully, nodding as Susie and Toto explained their busy schedules and travel needs. When they finished, she smiled confidently, ready to reassure them of her capabilities.
"Thank you both for sharing that with me. Your careers sound incredibly exciting and demanding, and I can see how important it is to you that Jack has stability amidst all the travel."
She paused for a moment, collecting her thoughts. "I have extensive experience working with children in various environments, including situations where parents have high-profile, busy careers. I understand the importance of creating a stable, nurturing environment for Jack, no matter where we are. I am skilled at maintaining routines and providing the educational support he needs to thrive."
Y/n continued, her voice steady and reassuring. "I’m very adaptable and have handled travel with families before. I’m organized and proactive, ensuring that everything Jack needs is prepared and that he feels secure and happy in each new location. I also love finding creative ways to make travel educational and fun for children, turning each new place into a learning opportunity."
She smiled warmly, looking between Susie and Toto. "I’m confident that I can provide the balance you’re looking for—supporting Jack’s growth and education while also making sure he enjoys the unique experiences your lifestyle offers. I’m excited about the possibility of being a part of your family and contributing to Jack’s development in such a dynamic and enriching environment. That of course is if you would have me.” She smiles at them.
After a few more questions about her approach to childcare and her thoughts on integrating educational activities with play, the interview began to wrap up.
“We’re very impressed with you, Y/n,” Susie said, glancing at Toto, who nodded in agreement. “We think you’d be a wonderful fit for our family.”
Y/n’s heart soared. “Thank you so much. I’m really excited about the possibility of working with you and getting to know Jack.”
“We’ll be in touch soon with more details,” Toto said, smiling. “Thank you for your time today.”
As the call ended, Y/n felt a rush of exhilaration. The interview had gone better than she could have imagined, and she felt a sense of validation in her choices and aspirations. The Wolff family represented a new path, one filled with opportunities for growth, adventure, and meaningful connections.
Two days later, Y/n received another email from the Wolffs.
______________________________________________________________
Dear Y/n,
We are thrilled to inform you that after careful consideration, we would like to offer you the position of nanny for our son, Jack. We believe that your skills, experience, and personality make you the perfect fit for our family, and we are excited about the prospect of having you join us.
As mentioned during the interview process, we would like to start with a trial period to ensure that there is a good connection between all of us. Therefore, we propose a trial run of three months, during which we can assess how well we work together and whether this arrangement meets everyone's needs.
We are genuinely excited to welcome you into the Wolff family. We believe that your background in Media Design, your bilingual abilities, and your passion for childcare will make a positive impact on Jack's life and development. We are confident that you will create a nurturing and stimulating environment for him, allowing him to thrive and grow.
Regarding logistics, we understand that relocating to Monaco is a significant step, and we want to make the transition as smooth as possible for you. If you are able to join us by the 1st of February, it would give us ample time to settle in and get acquainted before the busy racing season begins.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to support you and ensure that you have all the information you need.
Once again, congratulations, Y/n. We are looking forward to embarking on this exciting journey together.
Warm regards,
Toto and Susie Wolff
______________________________________________________________
As Y/n sat amidst the flurry of emotions, her mind drifted to the impressions she had formed of Toto and Susie Wolff during the interview process. Toto, with his focused demeanor and stern yet approachable presence, exuded a sense of determination and drive that commanded respect. She couldn't help but admire his unwavering commitment to excellence, balanced by an underlying charm that shone through in the occasional dad joke or lighthearted quip.
In contrast, Susie embodied elegance and grace in every aspect of her being. Y/n admired the way Susie carried herself with poise and sophistication, radiating warmth and sincerity in her interactions. Behind her poised exterior, Y/n sensed a deep well of motivation, care, and love for others, driven by her passion for making a positive impact in the world.
As Y/n pondered these thoughts, she felt a sense of gratitude wash over her. To be welcomed into the lives of such remarkable individuals, to work alongside them in nurturing and shaping the life of their son, Jack, was an honor beyond measure. She knew that under their guidance and with their support, she would not only thrive but also contribute to creating a loving and enriching environment for Jack to grow and flourish.
With a renewed sense of purpose and excitement, Y/n turned her attention back to the task at hand—preparing for the journey ahead. As she packed her belongings, her heart swelled with anticipation for the adventures that awaited her in Monaco, where she would embark on a new chapter of her life filled with love, laughter, and endless possibilities.

Theme: TTRPGs For Accessible Gaming Charity Bundle
The TTRPGS for Accessible Gaming Charity Bundle is going on until October. 20, and has 314 games included. There’s some real gems in this pile of games, so let’s highlight some that I’m excited about!
Unknown Journal, by Mori Seika.
Unknown Journal is a solo post apocalypse TTRPG in the same universe of its’ sister game Unknown Signal. In this universe mysterious beings have taken over the world, and they can take over human's bodies, making it really hard to distinguish between humans and monsters. It is best to ignore anyone you see, you never know who is human, and who is actually one of them. You'll need to look for resources, deal with monster encounters and maybe find some people you can trust.
Unknown Signal appears to be a video game designed by the same person, so this appears to be another way to engage with the world they built, with a journal and dice instead of a computer program. The printout includes a number of event tokens that you can cut out and put into an opaque bag; these will generate random events that will affect your character as they try to survive.
This looks to mainly be a resource management game in a post-apocalyptic world: every event has the potential to drain your resources, or force you to roll for consequences. Because events happen in a random order, your ending scene is determined by whether or not you’ve reached certain locations or met certain people, which I think lends this game to feel a little big like a choose-your-own adventure novel. If you love rolling dice to see what happens and using small prompts to generate fiction, I think you might like Unknown Journal.
I Want Your Bite, by Rue.
a mysterious bachelor has recently purchased the manor house overlooking the town. they're in the process of renovating- starting a new life. and rumour has it- they're looking for a partner.
compete against your fellow players for the chance at immortal love- a place by the Vampire's side.
Say hello to a competitive pvp-style rpg, but the arena involved here is love: you’re all competing to win a vampires’ heart. One person plays the vampire, and everyone else will pick up a reality tv-show style archetype, slated to engage in a number of challenges in order to score dates with the vampire and accumulate points. In between each challenge, there will be be downtime scenes that include those coveted dates, as well as other drama between competitors, probably trying to sabotage each-other’s chances or digging up dirt in the pursuit of making you appear to be the most desirable contestant of all.
What I’m really excited about is the optional Vampire Hunter rules. This changes the game, and also raises the stakes, by introducing a (secret) Vampire Hunter character who’s not here to kiss the Vampire, but kill them instead. All of the contestants will know who the Vampire Hunter is, and the Hunter will compete in the challenges just the same as everyone else - but our Vampire player will have to use their dates with people to suss out their true intentions - and hopefully pick a lover who actually wants to join them in a grand afterlife. A perfect way to change your dating sim into a hidden-role social game.
Post-Apo-Calypse, by CardboardHyperfix. @cardboardhyperfix
You play a troupe of three characters, each representing a stat. The three of you are trying to set up a route from one town to the other for delivering mail. POST represents a determined mail carrier. APO is a prepared representative from the town who makes sure you have enough supplies. CALYPSE is the protector who covers the group to keep them safe.
This one is for the solo gamers who like balancing a number of characters in their head. Post-Apo-Calypse has you build a troupe of three characters, with each character responsible for a different specialty - as well as different facets of the game. You need index cards, 12 Fate dice, and a pencil in order to play this, as well as a map that you can move your little group around on, and an inventory of the letters your mail carrier needs to deliver.
The game comes with generative tables that you can use to determine your surroundings, as well as the obstacles that will stand in your way. You’ll use a character (or perhaps the trio, working together) to overcome the obstacles by rolling the dice and looking for positive results - the more you get, the more obstacles you can clear. Your characters also have an exhaustion mechanic; if too many folks get too tired, they’ll have to return to home base before they can continue. However, any progress you make on your map will be saved, so the next time you venture out, you’ll likely get farther - and eventually get to another town.
The Girls of the Genziana Hotel by Hendrik ten Napel @hendrik-ten-napel
She only left behind a bloodstained stocking…
The Girls of the Genziana Hotel is a roleplaying game about chambermaids investigating the disappearance of one of their own: Marga, the boyish girl with the wild curls. It is the nineteenth century and all the girls work at the Genziana, an alpine hotel at the edge of the German territories. The Napoleonic wars have come to an end and Germany is changing—but you don't care about that, you just need to know what happened to her.
The Girls of The Genziana Hotel is a great game for folks familiar with other PbtA games, especially games like Brindlewood Bay or the Between. It’s a horror murder mystery, about a group of girls trying to find out what happened to their friend - and nobody else seems to care about her. The themes here are rather heavy, and are likely to centre feminine horror, including a potential reference to abortion, harassment, and violence.
There’s a couple of optional PbtA mechanics that show up here, the primary one catching my eye being the rolling with advantage/disadvantage mechanic. This involves adding an extra dice to your roll (making it 3d6 instead of 2) and taking the two highest or two lowest numbers, depending on the situation you’re in. You’ll also be slowly uncovering Marga’s fate as you play, and as you do so you’ll simultaneously uncover the kind of girl she was - and perhaps also why you miss her.
I think the biggest potential for the emotional side of role0play here is the Grief moves - different ways of grieving that differentiate your character from everyone else. These moves allow you to interact with a specific part of the game differently from everyone else, but also embody different ways of grieving someone who’ve you lost, and I think thematically it really ties in with the whole story that you’re trying to tell.
shadow/giant by PsychHound. @psychhound
It don’t matter how you got here. Don’t matter what the destination is. At some point, somehow, against the odds … Shadow felt safe with the Giant. And the Giant, though they mighta sworn off it before … cares for the Shadow. There’ll be threats. Always will be. But, maybe, you can get through. Find safety. Together. As long as it takes to get there. And through those long days, cold nights … the tears, the fears, the fighting … someone, somewhere … might just mistake you for a family.
Well. Wouldn’t that be somethin.
Shadow / Giant is a duet roleplaying game about finding care, safety, and family amidst a malicious and unaccepting world. In it, one player will play as the Giant – a gruff and jaded adult who thought their care for the world was long gone – and the other will play the Shadow – a child with magical abilities who now relies on them for protection.
First of all, I want to say that I am in awe of @psychhound ’s layout skill. This game is so beautiful, and it makes me so so jealous but in the best way. This is a duet game with asymmetrical rules, inspired by another duet game called Badger & Coyote.
In Shadow/Giant, one person plays the Giant, who is wrestling with mistakes they may have made in their past, and is doing their best to take care of the Shadow, even if they don’t feel equipped to do so. They build a dice pool out of skills, traits and the Shadow’s assistance, and use the highest result to determine how well or how poorly they do. In a way it reminds me of Forged in the Dark games.
The other person plays the Shadow, who has suffered something that scares them, an event possibly linked to their special powers. The Shadow chooses a single skill number to represent both their strength and their weakness. This skill number shifts up and down whenever you fail, with two conditions that will end the game should you ever reach 1 or 6.
The rules for shadow/giant have a strong narrative voice, which immerses you in the tone of the fiction even as you learn how to play. I’m a huge huge fan of the amount of art built into the design of this game, and even if you don’t have someone to play this with, I think reading the document in and of itself is a worthwhile experience.
Under the Neighbourhood by Quest Friends!
An eccentric girl enters a world of magical monsters and decides to become a witch. Twins discover a mysterious journal in the woods near their great uncle’s house and delve into the world of cryptids the journal describes. Three friends get lost on an island filled with frogs and fight to find their way home.
Under the Neighborhood is a tabletop roleplaying game for 3-6 players using the Powered by the Apocalypse engine, where players live out adventures from their favorite Saturday morning cartoons. All you need to play are some dice, some friends, and your own imagination!
Whether you want to recreate your favorite episodes from The Owl House, Gravity Falls, or Amphibia, or you simply want to go on exciting adventures in a curiously ordinary world of your imagination, Under the Neighborhood is the game for you!
Under the Neighborhood is a funky combination of PbtA design hallmarks and Cypher System mechanics. Like PbtA, you use stats and typically roll 2d6+stat to do a move. You also choose from a set of character playbooks, which establish how your character relates to the worlds around them. However, like the Cypher System, you have a special player resource that can be used like XP, or spent to activate special abilities or improve a roll. You also choose a descriptor, which makes your character especially unique, and grants you special items, skills, and inabilities.
You also build you own setting, but no matter what world you create, your world will have Mundane elements, Magical elements, and elements of the Other. The mundane elements will include what makes this place feel normal, but they also come through when you create your character complication: you’ll have small, slice of life problems that are important to you as a character, but probably don’t matter as much to the rest of the world. You’ll also have to define what is different from regular Earth - maybe the dead come back to life, or there are animal folk who live as our neighbours. And even though this world is Magical, there will still be bits of it that are Other - another place or dimension that connects the setting, but it’s unfamiliar, and provides special challenges. (@oddatbest you might like this one)
Intemperate Shadows, by Sad Goose Cooperative.
Discover the source of the scratching in the garden shed. Escape the disaster at Meitner base. Fight your undead grandmother in the crypt beneath City Hall.
Intemperate Shadows is a GMless no-prep horror-adventure system where four players simulate a monster movie, building from a subtly sinister opening scene to a no-holds vbarred showdown at the game's conclusion. Over the course of a three to four hour game, you'll pass control of the monster from one player to the next as a series of desperate decisions pushes your characters closer and closer to victory--or destruction.
I might have a bit of penchant for PbtA games - although I didn’t necessarily realize that this game was Powered by the Apocalypse until I opened it up. It’s boiled down to a few essential moves, with a broad interpretation of possible outcomes encouraged - whatever makes sense for the fiction. You slowly reveal a monster as you play, in a way that leaves the group’s odds of survival up in the air all the way until the end.
This is also a no-prep game, meaning that you’ll learn it as you play it, with an infographic mapping out each phase of the game in sequential order, as well as instructions for each phase as you get introduced to it. Your characters are fairly simple, because the focus is on what you can build together; I think this might be a great exercise in building onto elements introduced by other people to create something new. It’s also potentially a great way to give the entire table a chance to try out a part of the GM experience. I think it might also be a neat tutorial for roleplaying in general, as every action that a character can do requires that you answer a prompt question before you do the action.
The game itself culminates in a showdown - players will add up victory points accumulated over each phase, to find out whether they won, and if so, how final the monster’s defeat is: did you temporarily stop it, or put it away for good?
Inspirisles by Hatchlings Games.
Experiencing visions of a mythical land throughout childhood, you are guided to a kingdom ruled by the fae. Responsible for a pact made long ago by your ancestors, Arthur & Guinevere Pendragon, you must now earn Belief and the respect of their gods to secure your ticket back home.
INSPIRISLES is a completely original all ages Tabletop RPG promoting storytelling, empathy and Deaf awareness with an emphasis on cooperation.
This game takes place in a fairytale setting that places a heavy focus on elemental magic and opposing energies called Belief and Disbelief. Because of the use of four elements, I think the ideal play group is probably one gm and four players. Your character background is built through memories that you choose during character creation, and you also have to choose a patron and element. This elemental choice is going to be the biggest thing that differentiates you from the other characters. The game also has a mechanic that I’ve seen before in We Are All Mad Here, that being a location in-game that is a designated safe space; where your characters can retreat to for sanctuary.
The game comes with links to an online resource with sign language tutorials, as well as an explanation on how sign language can be incorporated into gameplay. There are different levels of sign that can be used, from Weak (finger-spelling) all the way to a “Bonus” level that includes learning signs for basic vocab attached to the game world. The game also comes with plenty of information about Deaf culture and ways to communicate respectfully and efficiently in sign language. In this way I think it’s a very helpful teaching tool!

@lexirosewrites here's the ask i told you i've been putting too much detail into, i call it Haunting of Harrington House it's more details on the ask i sent quite awhile ago of a/b/o steddie haunted house AU this is very long so it is under the cut
it involves slightly better harrington parents, but they still aren't the best the emotional neglect is very present, it isn't very steddie or buckingham coded yet so i didn't tag it as either these r just broad initial details
O!Steve A!Robin
Steve grew up in a relatively cosmopolitan town in Washington near Seattle. His father and mother were big shot lawyers with little time for him. He was mostly a check on the to-do list for a "picture perfect" marriage, his designation as a male omega wasn't unexpected or shunned as the Harrington family apparently had a long history of male omegas. But they were still much too busy so every school break they'd dump him at his maternal grandparents house a few towns away. When there wasn't a school break he was primarily in the care of a nanny till his 15th birthday when it was deemed he knew how to take care of himself & be safe abt it.
He grew up learning next to nothing about his paternal grandparents aside from what was essential to a family tree project here & there. Steve knew his middle name, Oliver, came from his great-grandfather & tht said great-grandfather was a male omega as well. Richard Harrington never divulged more than the necessary information that Steve needed for school: his grandfather's name was Elijah Harrington, his grandmother's name was Amelia Smith before she married Elijah, his ancestors were some of the first settlers of the area that would grow into Hawkins, that his grandparents lived there their entire lives
Well time passed as it's wont to do, Steve graduated high school & decided to study Library Sciences as a long-term goal. Despite their estranged relationship his parents were supportive of this choice, but his father drew the line at looking at schools in Indiana. Richard told Steve he'd left Indiana & specifically Hawkins for a reason. He never told his son what tht reason was.
Steve thrived in college, getting a Bachelor in Information Science eventually getting into a Masters program that would earn him a Masters in Library Science thus allowing him to begin working as a librarian. In his Masters program he met A!Robin & they instantly bonded after a disaster of a Socratic seminar where they ended up on the same side of a heated debate abt the legacy of the Library of Congress. When Steve graduates his parents r nowhere to be found even tho they'd promised & even shared w him their travel plans tht would get them there on time. So he goes thru the motions of celebration till he gets a call from an unknown number. It's the police, his parents had been involved in a serious car accident after swerving to avoid a drunk driver. They'd both been pronounced dead at the scene. His parents were dead.
The next two weeks r filled with meetings with his parents lawyer, finding appropriate coffins, alerting business partners & friends alike to the deaths, & then getting acquainted with their will. The will stated that if Steve was 20+ upon their death their house would go up for sale. They'd left certain things to business partners, certain things to friends, and the rest was Steve's to do w as he pleased. he sells much of it, keeps some of it. Among what was left to Steve is the deed & blueprints & keys to a house in Hawkins Indiana.
Well, he'd always been curious & there was no more childhood home waiting for him so he gets Robin to agree to come with him to the town he'd never been to before. They get in his car & go on a road trip. They arrive in Hawkins days later & stop at a diner they happen to find on Google maps before making the final trek to the mystery Harrington house.
They come upon a historic mansion from the Gilded Age. It's unmistakably in need of work. The windows r dark & the key gets stuck before working. The electricity buzzes & blinks before coming on reliably. There's furniture covered in white sheets in nearly every room. The kitchen hadn't been updated since the 1950s. The drawing room has covered paintings, covered furniture, a large fireplace clearly meant to impress, & nearly empty bookcases built into one wall. There is no television but an antique radio as well as a 70s record player in the sitting room. There's a second fireplace in the sitting room tht is just as gorgeous but clearly meant for the personal use of the family. There's an entire personal library past the sitting room & the platonic pair r apprehensive of the state of the books on the shelves. The library is two stories with a spiral staircase leading up. Another staircase directly opposite the foyer leads up to the second floor of the mansion. The blueprints show a total of five bedrooms & three bathrooms on the second floor with the third bathroom being an ensuite to the master bedroom. There's a staircase w a door at the top leading to the attic/servants quarters. They test the faucets in the kitchen & after some noise & undeniably stale water it works. The fridge clearly needs to b replaced & the oven & stove top r dubious at best. They find the master bedroom has a gorgeous antique nesting frame tht Robin thinks might date to the 1910s. Neither wants to chance the old mattress so they roll out their sleeping bags next to eachother & settle as comfortably as they can on the hardwood floor.
That night Steve dreams.
He stands in the garden behind the mansion. The lights r all on, & he can see shadows moving within as if a party is taking place. He's in the pajamas he wore to sleep & his feet r getting cold. But every effort he makes to get to the house makes him sink into the dirt. Just as his head is abt to b submerged beneath the soil he wakes up.
They eventually end up committing to using Steve’s inheritance to restoring/renovating the mansion. The dreams do not stop. In fact when he begins sleeping in the master bedroom alone the dreams get worse. More vivid and more confusing.
It all hits the fan not long after Steve has his first heat in the mansion. He comes out of his heat a little worse for wear bc he kept dreaming in between waves of horniness & moments of care from Robin. The dreams were not the pleasant wet dreams he’d always had during his heats. He could not remember any of them, but he always awoke with a rabbiting heartbeat searching the room for eyes he knew wouldn’t be there.
So he’s a little anxious but has to get over it quickly because they had carpenters coming in to reinforce various areas tht needed the help tht week, the electricity and wiring was already renovated and up to code. Context: they’d been working with local companies through this entire process, and the workers always smelled a little nervous whenever they were around. Neither of them asked because they got the feeling they wouldn’t get a straight answer. So these workers come in to do their job. The last area they needed to work on is the attic/servants quarters. These are big people, strong people, most of them alphas, but they all stood at the bottom of the stairs to the attic psyching each other up to go up there. Eventually they go up, begin working, all is quiet for half an hour, then suddenly every single one of the workers in the attic are charging down the stairs and stampeding out of the mansion.
i haven't exactly finished this thought but im now cooking up an entire fic

You know what I'm thinking about? That trip to Vergessen.
Not the memorable one. The super innocuous one, in which Ludinus and Trent insisted they'd just dug this weird rock out of the ground weeks ago, it's nothing to them, the Bright Queen can have it. The one where Eadwulf told Caleb he looked good despite having just crawled out of an eldritch horror's sludge and then showed off his super muscular, super tatted arms.
Let's return to Eadwulf's arms in a moment.
The scourgers were helping out with the Assembly's research portfolio, which at the time had included Ludinus's pet project of developing dunamantic super-serum. The scourgers had also previously been involved—in their off time, when they weren't doing their primary duties of torture and execution—with human experimentation of methods of augmenting a mage's personal reserves of magic.
Sound familiar?
(Really, Ludinus, are you too old to test your experiments on yourself?)
Back to Eadwulf's well-sculpted arms. By the time we meet him in 836 PD, whatever might've been done to them in 810 PD has been covered with those pointedly geometric tats. Somewhere around the same time span, an assassination attempt is made on the life of the Voice of the Tempest by assassins using what was likely a prototype of Otohan Thull's dunamantic contraption, which is a kind of harness that uses the distilled dunamis created by Yeza Brenatto from studying the stolen beacons. This attack of course left multiple Ashari dead and beyond the point of recovery, among them Derrig and Will.
Six years later, Otohan Thull of course would kill Fearne, Orym, and Laudna in battle using that contraption, and not long after would also use the same assassination tactic to draw out the Champion of the Raven Queen so Ludinus could press him into an orb.
Still with me?
In Molaesmyr, after the Solstice had been stuck in time, Team Wildemount find a number of interesting items in Gildhollow, Ludinus's forsaken bachelor pad. Notable among them is a chest harness designed to consume various natural sources of power in order to augment the wearer's arcane abilities.
I think it's incredibly likely that the human experimentation component of the scourger program, given its scope, was requested if not designed by Ludinus, in an effort to further his research in the realm of augmenting mortals' capacities for magic. (Mechanically, I imagine this equates to additional spell slots per day, or the capacity to singlehandedly pull off experimental spells beyond the scope of ninth level, i.e. Dunamantic Nap spell, but that's just speculation.)
Primarily my point here is to demonstrate that its entirely possible if not likely that even the minutiae of the Assembly's horrific program to create child soldiers may have been part of Ludinus's effort to release Predathos and kill the gods, in an effort to show how broadly this may touch even other previous campaigns.
Additionally my point is to say that if anyone has reason to lead the vanguard (pun intended) of righteous warfare against Ludinus Da'leth, it's a Liam O'Brien PC, and frankly, at this point, given all of this character reasoning to do so, I do not care which one.
#critical role#cr spoilers#ludinus da'leth#orym of the air ashari#caleb widogast#vorb#(i do think I'm funny thanks :3)#cr meta#also it's possible the nein bathed before getting shuffled off to vergessen but i do not remember. it's for the joke.
