My ex's mother once gifted me some Bach Flowers Remedy against stress (never used it tbh) (not too keen on naturopathy) (i may be witchy but i don't believe in alt medicine).
I've just read BFR are mostly infusions of a teeny tiny bit of flower in water, then mixed with brandy, then sold after being diluted with more alcohol.
No wonder it is suppose to soothe anxiety. I too after a glass of liquor am pretty relaxed.

Encounters with the Bach Flower Remedies
Flower essences are concentrations of plant energies, there are no chemical constituents from the plant sin the remedy, it’s all energy. I used them many years ago but had no noticeable success. I was on the way to the breakdown that has darkened my family’s life to this day. The thing was, in my anxiety, I was throwing them down like you would any herbal remedy or industrial medicine tablet. Six…

seriously, as a qualified herbalist with a science background, you literally never know what you're going to get when you purchase herbal supplements. Some herbs that people venerate for healing powers are straightup placebos, let's start with that. Of herbs (and there are many) that have been identified as medically significant, the amount of any active constituent varies with growing conditions, soil, climate, weather, seasons, even the time of day some things are harvested, and variations in individual plants. You can have two plants of the same species growing next to each other and harvest them at the same time and still observe differences in their phytochemical profile. How they're harvested, dried, stored, and prepared also matters, some constituents oxidise, some break down under UV or heat, some straight up evaporate, some decay into different compounds depending on how they're processed, and so on.
On top of that, in large scale production there's an increased risk of unwanted volunteer plants being included in the harvest, ranging from the inert to the outright dangerous (this isn't a hazard unique to herb farming, that's just industrial agriculture eg. a couple of years ago in Australia there was a situation where large amounts of Atropa belladonna was found in bags of baby spinach) as well as greater risk of things like aflatoxin contamination.
On top of that you have suppliers and manufacturers doing shady shit like bulking out herbs with cheap adulterants (chaff, sawdust, grass clippings, whatever) and/or adding dyes and fragrances to make them more appealing, same as we've recently seen highlighted with kitchen herbs and spices.
You literally never know what you're going to get when you purchase herbal supplements.
Do some herbs have medicinally valuable properties? Yes, absolutely. Can a knowledgeable and skilled herbalist utilise them effectively? With a thorough consultation, maybe, sometimes, depends on what for. Is herbalism a 1:1 replacement for conventional medicine? No, and no herbalist worth a damn will tell you otherwise. Are OTC herbal supplements a reliable, safe alternative to conventional medicine? Jesus fuck NO.
While it is absolutely possible to get me to yell about a diet-media personality just by giving me their name and half an hour to go look at their achievements (or sometimes several hours depending on how mad I get fuck you david avocado wolfe) please keep in mind I will probably do it to your faves as well and also I am *aggressively* anti-CAM in a way that is probably a bit extreme for most of tumblr and I have very very very very very little respect for the vast majority of CAM and I think a lot of it is actively harmful, especially because it's so unregulated that you literally never know what you're going to get when you purchase herbal supplements.
