They're similar but also very different. I also love the contrast between their partners. Hannibal is a devil incarnate, a fallen angel wreaking havoc on earth. But Hilda, Malthus describes her as an angel disguised as the devil sent to him by god.

Hortensia is here. A relief she hadn't even known she was carrying lifts off her shoulders. She sighs out as they drop. Like everyone else, she looks like she's had a rough time, but she's here. With so many of their friends' statuses still unknown, it's a victory all the same.

"Hey, Hortensia." A smile is forced into place as Yunaka gives a little wave. She doesn't know the youngest Elusian princess very well. Burdening her with anything other than the silly and mysterious traveler feels cruel, with so much going on.

"Glad to see ya up and at 'em, that makes this easier." She gestures over in the direction of where she last saw Ivy. "Your sister is looking for you, she's been worried sick. You should go and find here as soon as you can."

Ivy would have burned down that army by herself just to reach Hortensia, if she could. Fate was sick and cruel to have stopped her. "...I'm glad to see you're alright."

It's not as if either of them had had a whole great deal of time of it, what with the war going on and whatnot, but it still gave her a sense of relief to see someone else familiar in this mess.

"Yunaka!" Hortensia matches her smile, grasping her hand. "Aw, I'm really glad to see you're okay too! Diamant said you were here but not, like, your state of being, so!"

She gives Yunaka a once over. "Yeah," she says, no small amount of relief in her voice as she brings up Ivy. "I ran into her just now. She's-" and Hortensia doesn't trust herself not to be cringe and un-princess-like in front of someone she definitely should be looking the part for so she gives a double thumbs-up and moves on. "Okay! I'm really-really-really happy she's okay. I just wanted to give everyone a quick check-up before heading out!"

As way of explanation, she brandishes her (somewhat beat-up) staff with a smile. "So if you've up and broken a bone somewhere, or know someone else who has, lemme know, okay? I'm sure they'd be thrilled to be healed by Elusia's cutest!"

If i had a nickle for every time i watched a kids tv show from the 2010’s with three main, human characters(a boy w brown hair, and boy w black hair, and a girl w black hair AND dyed stripes) who befriend a group of non human characters(some of them are good, and others want to take over earth) and then have to fight for their lives while keeping the non human characters a secret from society, and taking place in west USA, AND having the mc have a missing father (one of the non humans r now his adoptive father), and the mc has a motorcycle/vespa, and they are also in highschool, and the girl w the cool hair speaks 2 languages

i never talk about naming patterns when it comes to the girls but ima do that. im not gonna get into the etymology bc thats kinda boring but more into why and how they would be named the way they are.

kiara is a very like. early 00s black girl name. i have a cousin named that (pronounced diff but its the same name) and like yeah. her parents would absolutely name her that esp because they're the youngest of all the pogue parents. she's born like 2001-2002 as well and while the name peaked in 199 it was still fairly popular with black people. the only girl i'll talk avout syllables with bc the others we dont have enough info. but mike (1 syllable) and anna (2 syllables) having kiara/kie (1-3) makes sense when you put all their names together. its common for people to name their daughters names with 2-3 syllables for some reason and very rarely does the name become more complicated than the parent. you see mike, anna and kiara together on paper and it makes sense.

sarah's simpler because that will always be a popular name. and it's a name that doesn't ever feel or sound old because of how popular it is. was prob named after a relative.

wheezie is similar in that she was likely named after a relative (p sure her bame is louisa) and that relative also likely went by wheezie or ouiser (think steel magnolias. also set in the south but this time its louisiana).

ruthie's name made me giggle bc like. its about time a ruth/ruthie showed up. southern white ppl (esp rich ones) keep names in the family forever like up above and its quite common to see young girls with "old" names. with wheezie and ruthie their names will never quite be at the top of a name list but it's about legacy not popularity.

cleo is interesting because if i had a nickle for every time a character from an island/ "island continent" (colloq) id have two nickles. but its strange that it happened twice but no seriously cleo is a very odd name in that it's simple, but there's something about it that sounds and feels exotic. people from islands do tend to have these lilting, sing-songy names (if you knew how many island ursulas i do...) and cleo is one of them. its like they take their accent into account when naming people.

Bachira doesn’t exactly understand why he feels this way. In some ways, you remind him more of his mother than anyone else; the way paintbrushes and late night walks seem to meld together into a journal of core memories — waiting for him to open that journal and flip through the pages of fleeting events that could dissapear at a moments notice.

Bachira, well — Bachira is, certainly an interesting individual. Those traits that seem to simmer and reflect into his yellow irises whenever you’re close to him. It’s not as if you were much more different than he was.

Every time he looks at you, he feels his stomach tie into a knot— your laughter teases him. He always thought you were pretty. It wasn’t as if he never looked past personality: he could think of a dozen girls whom had managed to attract him. Still, he always finds himself feeling this— this feeling.

A bit like a pathetic teenage boy whenever you walk the streets of outer Tokyo at night , when the lamps illuminate the city that supposedly “never sleeps”. It’s the only thing he remembers from sociology , ironically the one thing you mentioned to him while walking. Sometimes, only sometimes ; he catches himself staring a little too long at his reflection in the mirror after having walked you home when the “night walk” get dangerously close to an all nighter.

Its in that sliver of a moment , that his cheeks get red and suddenly poor little Bachira can’t comprehend why you never seem to teeter on that edge of seduction— he sulks , because he wants you to battle the same temptation he does whenever your faces get a little too close to eachother— maybe if he got you to play football with him— maybe then he could play off his lips accidentally touching yours when pretending to fall off and plant face first to the ground.

Like a pendulum, you swing towards him. Always going that extra mile whenever you manage to scramble whatever nickles you have dangling around in your school bag and buy him those sour pineapple flavored candies he loves from the vending machine outside of the school entrance. When you help him do all of those essays he always puts off to the last minute and then hastens to finish. When you call out to him after his football practice.

But just like a pendulum swings towards something, it also swings away from it.

He can’t help all those rumours that make him out to be a monster. He can’t mitigate the presentiment that he’s ransacking you of a social life that you deserve. When your classmates criticize your friendship with him, he feels something hideous creep into him— that alarming feeling of wanting to do things that are pure evil to those who harm you.

And he feels guilty for that.

He feels guilty for wanting to dictate your own life— to mallow what you feel inside so that you atleast know what it is he goes through every single day. Whenever you seem to unconsciously doubt a decision that would lead you astray from him, he convinces you to do a complete detour, to return to what you know best and—

And he snaps out of it.

Because he’s no longer in front of his bathroom mirror but in front of you,on his bed. Suddenly everything seems to come crashing down as his inner monster tell him to kiss you.

And he does.
