gamers I love unions and everything but Uh Oh. UH OH. Canada post just voted YES to strike literally 2 weeks before my contract with them is supposed to start. They all may walk out as soon as Nov 3rd and my contract starts on Nov 17th ;-;
Like again I’m definitely ALL for unions but!! Uh oh!! My fucking JOB!!! They may strike for longer than my contract even lasts and since I’m part time and wouldn’t have received a pay check at that point I don’t think I’d receive anything from the union fund (which is okay because I wouldn’t feel right taking from it anyway)
I’m hoping the government is gonna bend quickly because of the holiday season but with how profitable Amazon is over the post office I kindaaa think they’re gonna drag it out and test their luck. Which is :(

got a visit from the head of hr today bc someone (unsure who but am pretty sure its one of the group of guys on another shift who have an issue with me bc of my being trans) complained that i was disrespectful and they felt they couldnt confront me about it because of my gender and im just. my probationary period at work is up in less than a week im so terrified theyre gonna let me go before i can join the union. i dont know what to do about it

The IAM union has a new contract proposal to vote on next week which would be great... if it passes. Even if it does, I still won't ve going back to Boeing for another week or so.

Even just like. $20 would be super useful to afford gas this week.
Not gonna be my usual sort of post and I hate having to ask for help more than anything but... I am a IAM751 Boeing union member still on strike and my first paycheck at my new job went entirely to taxes. I write books and have links if you have the means, cause I need to afford gas and food for another week. I know a lot of us are in similar boats but anything honestly helps.

‘‘Y/N, your father has asked for you’’ the girl stood at the bottom of the tree, looking up
‘‘Yeah just a minute’’ you strain, sawing at a branch with your knife. You are currently up a cherry tree, removing any dead or diseased branches (an issue that has spiked lately- your tribe is making use of the  fruit trees surrounding your current campsite, dismay to some, joy to others).
The girl -your new maid- stayed at the bottom of the tree, on the ground. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, clearly nervous. ‘‘M-miss, he says you must come now.’’
‘‘Y/N is fine. And i said i'll only be a minute’’ you grit your teeth, looking down at her. ‘‘Move out of the way, the branch is about to fall.’’
She stumbles to the left, narrowly avoiding the branch. You jump down, calling over to someone to take the branch away. ‘‘You okay? You seem on edge’’ you ask the girl, lottie, her name was.
‘‘yes mi- Y/N.’’ she replies. You raise a brow, but dont push. She was captured in one of your fathers raids about a month ago. You chalk it up to still being skittish- most captives are. 
‘‘You should be grateful, y’know. Most of your people end up in fields or some other labouring job. You're lucky.’’ you tell her, though, you're not sure ‘lucky’ is the right word. You, at the current age of 15, have been through a total of 12 different maids- now onto your 13th. It wasn't your fault, you would say to your father, they were all simply not good enough at their jobs! He would only laugh, amused, in response. ‘Or maybe you are too headstrong, my hellraiser.’ he would reply. 
He was the chief of your tribe, your father. He was strong, not just physically, but mentally too. Among the other barbarian tribes he was one of the most respected chief’s, given the name ‘dregris the reaper’ for his renowned capturing of servants and taking of crops, reaping villages and kingdoms alike for all their goods. ‘‘Yes o-ofcourse Y/N, i wasn't being ungrateful i just- i was only making sure- your father’’ Lottie began rambling, perhaps fearful she would be put into the fields, or even executed, for her ‘rudeness’. You held up your hand, silencing her.
‘‘Yes, yes, all is forgiven’’ you roll your eyes, turning to walk towards your fathers tent. ‘‘What did he want again?’’ you question.
‘‘The games will begin soon, he wanted you next to him when they start’’ lottie informs you
‘‘SHIT’’ you completely forgot about the games. How did you manage that? Everyone has been prepping for them for weeks! It's been non-stop work, decorate, gather, make, you should know more than most, having been in charge of most of it!
The barbaric games were held once every 5 years, as a symbol of the unions between yours and other tribes. This time, it was your tribe that had been chosen to host, a great honour to all involved.

You clumsily settle yourself into your seat (beside your fathers), hoping your face/body paint doesn't look too rushed or has smudged.
‘‘There she is!’’ you hear your father call over, turning your head to see him only to be surprised to see 3 others alongside him. ‘‘My daughter! These are the Bakugou’s, our closest allies. This is their chiefess, mitsuki,’’ he points to a tall, well built woman, with spiky blonde hair and red eyes, she smiles towards you, ‘‘their chief, masarau,’’ your father now points to a man with brown hair, and soft eyes, though you could see they were intelligent,  ‘‘and their son, katsuki’’ he points lastly to a boy your age, though a good bit taller. He was evidently strong, and looked the spitting image of his mother, with sharp carmine eyes, framed by spiked blonde hair. He stares at you, smirking slightly.
You stand and smile at them all, eyes lingering on katsuki before darting to his parents. ‘‘Welcome’’ you smile, ‘‘I trust your journey wasn't too troublesome?’’ you asked.
Mitsuki stared at you and suddenly let out a hearty laugh ‘‘Stars, Dregis, she speaks like a princess! Was she tutored by some duke?’’ True, you were considered extremely well- mannered for a barbarian, but your mother insisted you were given lessons on how to be, she valued manners, and your father greatly valued her- giving her everything she could wish for.
He laughs ‘‘ ‘spose, more like some poor old noble who happened to be taking a walk in the woods’’ the elder bakugou's laugh with him, all walking closer towards you as they seat themselves to watch the games. You are all sitting in front of a large dome-shaped cage, your father to your left, katsuki to your right (his parents to his right), all the other chiefs joining beside. Two men enter the cage, their names are announced to the crowd, and they begin to fight. You feel a nudge to your right arm.
‘Hey, idiot’ Katsuki asks you ‘What's your name?’
You internally facepalm at your fathers one-way introduction, and answer ‘Y/N.’ Returning to watching the fight. The men finish and a victor is declared and gets to move on to the next round. Two women are brought in next, and their fight begins.

The games finish, and Everyone gathers towards the feast. Your father at the head of the long table, reading himself to give a speech.
‘Many thanks to all entering the the games today, and to all who contributed to setting it up! and may there be many more in the future to come!’ there was a deafening cheer from all at the table and tables surrounding it.
The rest of the evening was a haze; eating, dancing, celebrating, but you do remember feeling as though you were being watched. Like someone was observing you. It was unnerving, but there were many ‘suitors’ as your father called them, no doubt wishing to court you. You shrugged it off and enjoyed the rest of your night.
Nearby, katsuki watched as you danced and weaved between people, eyes never leaving your figure. He was intrigued by you, and wanted to learn more about you. He headed towards you, and asked for a dance. You agreed, curious about the boy.
Unbeknownst to the two of you, your father was beginning to argue with another tribe. The Jurzac tribe. Only when a chair was thrown, did the pair of you look over, seeing what was happening, everyone prepared themselves for a battle, before the Jurzac chief spoke.
‘THIS MEANS WAR, DREGRIS’ and he leaves without another word, his tribe following. The atmosphere is tense, the air thick. A war between tribes ment only one thing.
Death.

there's so much to kvetch about, i dont know where to begin
i was gonna traumadump but im gonna rant about jewish history instead
well ever since i noticed activism becoming an internet trend i knew we were doomed cuz a part of soviet antisemitism is an intellectualisation of jew hatred (that's why stalin would publicly condemn antisemitism and then be antisemitic in a manner he could treat as just "anti nationalism not antisemitism"). first of all jewishness/antisemitism is already so complex which means it's really easy for people (jews and non-jews) to misunderstand it and harm us. so when i saw people quickly latching on to binaries such as the oppressed/oppressor and good/bad and removing all nuance, i knew things were gonna go downhill. yes all forms of hatred are very complex but in my opinion even the most basic forms of antisemitism like "jews control the world!" aren't properly grasped by gentiles which strengthens antisemitism since they're so ignorant about us lol. this is particularly dangerous because most people have never met a jew or know much about us and we are only like .2% of the world. what's worse is that they view us through a culturally christian lens as well instead of seeing us for who we really are.
the phrase antisemitism makes you stupid is too real. it feels like a stupidity epidemic has really made itself clear with the rise of antisemitism which opens the door to other hatreds too.
back to soviet antisemitism, i cant really discuss it properly because yk tumblr antisemites are everywhere and i dont want you to get harassed by them but here's some things i wanna bring attention to
taken from this incredible book "The Jews of Eastern Europe, 1772-1881" by Israel Bartal, "The imperial project to enlighten and reeducate the Jews in the spirit of the autocratic Russian state was to be implemented through the establishment of a system of Jewish schools, with instruction in Russian. The actions of the authorities in the days of the affair of ‘‘government- sponsored enlightenment’’ were similar to those taken by colonial regimes that sought to disseminate European culture among the natives in their overseas colonies." of course this didn't work lmao but it was one of their many many many efforts. people don't realise the scorching similarities between native americans and jewish people and it is so frustrating. people don't understand the extent of both of our suffering.
2. In the early 1960s the image of the Jew in the Soviet Union was that of an evil capitalist carrying out illegal capitalist deals which resulted in a high number of death sentences and executions of Jews which was not really out of the norm since death sentences and executions were already "normal" punishments for Jews, it was just a new excuse :/
3. a book i read a long time ago about soviet jewry said: a) jews are more safe in the democractic centre than everywhere else and b) jews in the soviet union were not allowed to assimilate or live a jewish life, nor were they allowed to immigrate even though the soviet union didn't want them there which i found very interesting. i cannot remember the name or author but i will look and let you know later if i find it.
4. the newspapers in the soviet union in their antisemitic propaganda would list the full names of jews along with their home and work addresses, job positions, etc. these newspapers would also illustrate the jew as disrespectful and harmful to "even their own jewish people and synagogues" to show how bad we are lmao.
5. theres so many jewish political movements partly because when everyone is so dedicated to wiping out jewish culture, these political movements form a jewish culture as an attempt to make up for the absence. this may seem simple but it seems like people really don't understand our desperation for survival. moreover soviet union "atheism" mostly attacked jews and really shows how atheism/secularism can be damaging to us as well.

I don't wanna say this under my own name because I'm friends with too many Quackity fans, but god, everything about his actions just makes me think that what he cares about is just avoiding legal trouble and protecting his own public image
And maybe also about his friends to be fair

He says he's doing all this for the viewers, but I guess that doesn't include the viewers who care about the French streamers or the French characters
And I don't see any hint of him genuinely caring about the workers. This is not how you treat someone you care about. He keeps implying that he can't talk to anyone because of "leaks" but what the fuck could be so bad about the "leaks" that it justifies this kind of disrespect? Why is this secrecy more important than the needs of the workers?
Nobody's asking him to reveal his biggest secrets to the workers, everyone is just asking for him to TALK to them at least, and hearing them out
He also says he can't talk because he doesn't want to make false promises, then just say that! Again, nobody asked him to promise them a job in the future, we just want him to be honest and respectful! Just tell them directly that you don't know yet and listen to their thoughts on the situation! Ask them how you can alleviate the inconvenience if it's within your means! Just talk to them like they're fellow adults who are capable of having a reasonable conversation! Because they are!
The union mentioned that some of the workers had basically been told by management that they should be grateful to be allowed to work for Quackity Studios and ngl, I wonder if this is not only the view of higher management but of Quackity himself too. That's the question I keep asking myself and not daring to say out loud: does he see the lower level workers as just fans who should be happy they were even allowed to participate at all?

Second I tbh don’t want to assume what Q true intentions really are because heavy speculation isn’t productive and can lead to more stress in general. However I think that we can agree that he isn’t doing it all for the money, given that we’ve always known QSMP was never and problably even supposed to be a profitable thing (just the hosting and translation costs alone point to this).
That said, I do agree that everything that has been done up to this point and since Lea started to reveal things seems to be more damage control and trying to avoid legal issues than actually trying to be fair to the workers. This isn’t even speculation if you consider the sudden firing of Twitter admins and the silent towards all the other admins.
Obviously, when you’re a company or an individual you wanna avoid a lawsuit at all cost. It is a logical business move, morally I don’t agree with that mindset ofc, and I also feel like it’s a misunderstanding of the intentions of most of the admins.
I don’t know any of them personally but none of them, so far, have publicly said they wanted to take the legal route or even sue Qstudios. In fact, most if not all of them have expressed their love of the project and wished for it to continue with better working conditions. Some admins also said they didn’t care about getting paid, that volunteer work was fine if they had done it without the stress and pressure. Side note if it ever comes out that some admins want to take the legal route to make their rights be recognised and be compensated then my full support to them.
As if he is doing all this for preserving his image (i say IF) then what a terrible job he’s doing. I hope I’m making very clear that QSMP and Q’s image with french speakers fans (and non fans, and other French Ccs) is in literal ruins.
Also I feel like there was a genuine wish to add different cultures, I’m talking specifically about the French and BRs here, but an underestimating of the work it takes to actually merge people from different backgrounds and that it goes beyond just putting CCs from all over the world on minecraft with a translator. The fact that there was no FR, PT or KR speaking upper admin at all in the team baffles me to this day.
Worst thing is that we probably only know like a fraction of the overwork, miscommunication and intimidation that went on behind the scenes. Heart aches for all of those who went through it. All the love to them ♥️

since level-5’s localization branch closed down a couple of years ago, im honestly wondering how this will affect the english release of nwos
dont get me wrong im not at all concerned for its existence—its going to exist most definitely. not only is nwos included in christopher robin miller’s business website (he lists 8 games hes worked on, when his voice only appears in seven), but nobody is more aware of layton’s incredible popularity in the west than level-5 themselves. professor layton was inspired by the west, after all. it would be franchise suicide to not localize it and that’s the last thing l5 is trying to do after making a reboot so crappy that it nearly bankrupted the franchise
but since there’s no localization branch anymore, it’s likely level-5 is for the first time ever outsourcing their projects’ localization, and that’s what kinda concerns me. the reason a lot of anime and games have shitty dubs is bc they get outscored to companies that can’t be fuckin asked (funimation is a good example)
localization divisions of game companies specifically can be shit too (treehouse is a good example) but level-5’s branch always made a genuine effort to produce good dubs. thats why all of their voice actors fit the setting; they're all bri'ish, and most of if not all of them did genuinely good jobs (im not tolerating slander against lani she did her best. i blame whoever casted her she was not designed to be voicing a 11 yr old cockney child)
and that's why it worries me to see nwos be outsourced - we have no way of knowing how the dub quality will change. obviously christopher robin miller is not going to stop voicing layton, we're not going to get any kind of chris pratt mario shit bc hino is not a backstabber
but what DOES worry me is the possibility of nwos getting outsourced to one one of those companies that dont give a shit. i should note that the the likelihood of this isnt very big just given how aware level-5 is of layton's prevalence in the west. layton is not like most anime/anime games, its not going to have its dub be unceremoniously flung to some low-effort team to hire the same non-union white man you recognize in every fire emblem game
but still, just because its unlikely doesnt mean its completely impossible. in the second l5 vision hino mentioned that inazuma eleven's next game is getting internationally released, which means the same is almost certainly happening to nwos (the fact this is happening is actually kind of huge - every other layton game before this has had to wait up to a year after the game releases in JP for the localization)
as much as it pains me to give any non-hershel level 5 game anything but my cold and dismissive scorn, i will be checking out inazuma eleven victory road's english version when the game releases in 2024 (its not guarenteed that victory road and nwos will be outsourced to the same people btw, but that kind of thing is common)
and unless victory road's localization ends up sucking some seriously crinkly ass, i dont think we have anything to worry about

could you tell us about your apprenticeship?? how did you get into it etc? i'm really thinking abt moving towards a trades career but it's a bit intimidating
depending on what trade u r going into and where u are going into it it can be a piece of cake or a bit difficult. here in alanta joining the union is easy as fuck. i haven't even taken my exam yet and i am already placed in a job. definitely did not require a resume. the exam is high school english and algebra. if u pass, you immediately get a raise and begin your official apprentice period. but for the same union, if you apply in portland for instance, you are competing against thousands, must submit a portfolio and go through two interviews, and your job placement is dependent on how high you score on the exam. high scorers getting the first and best placements, low scorers having to wait potentially months and months for placement. honestly still worth it bc the pay in that area is sooooooo good, and it's still doable, not that crazy, certainly not harder than getting into college.
DONT BE INTIMIDATED!!!!!
whatever your trade, definitely consider going union if possible. one great thing abt the union is, if you hate the company or crew you are working with, you can request a new job assignment very very easily. so if there's a crazy or sexist guy giving you a hard time, you can just go work somewhere else, it's a piece of cake. plus these guys are really not trying to lose their pensions or get into trouble w the union. but if u work for a private company and not the union, much more difficult to get out of a shitty situation.
i think electrician is a great way to go for women. i think machinery mechanic or crane operator (chachingggg $$$$$) could also be a good way to go... hvac could be cool, i know a lot of female carpenters but not on my jobs bc my local is mainly industrial and not residential.... pipefitters and sheetmetal workers make good money but tbh i haven't seen any women in those crews so far, they're a bit heavier on the heavy lifting, and the guys seem like fucking knuckleheads, but idk. women make superb welders. from what i have seen.
cnc machinist could be cool but idk if the money is all that good. there's a based as fuck aircraft mechanic here on tumblr, that's a cool option. pilot is another cool ass trade, high demand rn, with a strong union presence though it works a bit differently in their area.
also a good option? ups? but if u go ups try to get that first package handler job at an air hub, not a ground hub, way more women and dykes in the air industrial sector in that company.

first, what is a union?
A union (or labor union) is any group of workers who negotiate a contract / labor rights with their employer, for the purpose of protecting their rights as workers.
emphasis on group of workers because a union is not comprised of third-party. there are no outsiders who come to a workplace and go ‘hey fuck your boss organize with me :)))’. a union is organized because the employees of a workplace want to organize. and when they organize a union, they democratically decide upon a contract that they as the workers want, whether its increased wages, better protections, other benefits, etc.
Union organizers are visiting stores to get partners to sign up, with some stores filing in as little as a few days.
THIS IS A LIE. the phrasing of this implies not only a third-party organization, but one that isnt also comprised of starbucks workers. the union is MADE of starbucks workers and organizers DO NOT independently reach out to stores: WORKERS reach out to ORGANIZERS to unionize.
This card carries legal weight.
again, blatant fear-mongering. they do not have ‘legal weight’. the ONLY thing union cards say is that you want to be represented by a union. NO ONE CAN SUE YOU OVER SIGNING A UNION CARD, NOT EVEN STARBUCKS CORP ITSELF. THAT IS ILLEGAL. in the first place union cards are entirely anonymous: no one knows what you signed except the National Labor Relations Board. you CAN sign ‘no’. you CAN choose not to sign a card at all.
Union cards are legal documents and by signing you may give up your rights to speak for yourself.
yet another blatant lie! you do not forfeit ANY rights by signing a union card. NONE. in fact, if you sign a union card, it is not even a definite yes to a union. always always always, starbucks denies the legitimacy of a union card signing and requires an election vote, which is the ACTUAL election that calls for unionization.
Signing a card has legal meaning.
AGAIN. IT DOESNT. THE ONLY THING a union card says is ‘i want a union’ and that is IF you sign yes. you can sign no. OR EVEN NOT SIGN ONE AT ALL. every organizing partner is completely transparent about this because that is the truth, these union cards are in no way binding, yet starbucks corporate employs scare tactics to make it seem as if these cards will seal the deal. THEY WONT. NOT UNTIL AN ELECTION IS CALLED.
No, union organizers do not have special privileges that require you to talk to them. If at any time you are feeling harassed or unreasonably pressured, please contact your managers and the Partner Resources numbers on the Make The Right Call poster in your back room.

first, no, union organizers dont have special privileges because again they are baristas. starbucks partners who work on the floor. the same sentiment applies to shift supervisors and even store and district managers. you arent required to speak to a ‘union organizer’ because no one can fucking make you speak to your manager if you dont want to and express that you dont want to.
second, they frame ‘union organizers’ (i.e. partners and coworkers who want to organize) as authoritative and controlling, and make it easy for a partner to report an organizing partner. this will kill union organizing at a store before it can even begin.
i know none of my followers are starbucks workers and tbh i also know none of you have worked a job yet but you have to fucking look at this and see that this is blatant union busting! this is what it looks like! its manipulating language to scare workers from organizing, its lying about what a union is and how the process works and what a contract does to benefit its workers!!
like.. honest to god this is so infuriating. this is what Starbucks workers have to put up with. NATIONWIDE. across the country. INTERNATIONAL even. on top of the ridiculous changes from sbcorp itself. and you have to think, if this is what we face because of organizing, think of the shit we get every single week from corporates trying to maximize profits by cutting hours, delaying benefits, leaving partners unsafe and unsupported. its frankly fucking ridiculous

George manages to spin it as like, part of a Scheme which IS funny to me (and also I have been thinking a LOT about George v Bertha in terms of like, harm caused and why Bertha is maybe not less Upset but is like 'i don't feel personally bad for people I don't know dying' and I think it's like, most of the harm George causes is faceless, like talking to the union boss is his first time being like 'oh workers are PEOPLE who also have children and families, whoa', meanwhile Bertha has spent her entire married life walking into a room and thinking 'if I have to destroy every person here to get ahead I will')

reading this chapter was truly an emotional journey for me - i wrote a page of notes while reading that are completely incoherent but i will recount here anyway
firstly, of course chip is a pun girly we have known this forever, but every time she makes a joke i laugh out loud like yes you are so funny
my next focus was him forgetting to turn his location off - i hear the black dog by taylor swift playing in the background. i need this girl and this boy to realise that neither of them hate eachother because this cat and mouse game is getting on my nerves (in the best way no offence to you author)
wondering why i wasn’t invited on the richie carmen road trip - mainly because i want to hear their conversations and secondly because it would be the perfect opportunity for a tag team
as soon as i read the bit about the chance that they would interact being low i thought ,,,, ooo this will be disproved by our favourite author extraordinaire and i was right!
random request but can we have a christmas / holiday themed chapter i just want to see all the presents chip gives out i love her
also enjoying the use of kitchen as a verb when talking about richie being bad at kitchen - it’s giving ken’s job being beach in the barbie movie

i can’t even explain the neil fak moment but it is so fucking classic for him to misread a situation SO SEVERELY, i wish this was an actual scene because i need to physically see the facial expressions
and then we get to uncle lee. i had to put my phone down when carmen said his name, genuinely i let out a singular clap. we have never seen chip like this and i don’t know if we ever will again. this interaction consolidated the chip being a sponsor theory for me as it is so clear that she cannot stand the way people talk about drugs and addiction - especially regarding mikey
a callback to the italians loving their unions, you love to see it
i wrote very minimal notes on the carmy chip interaction at the end of the scene as there is really nothing for me to comment on except for how beautifully you wrote it. it is so peaceful but so angry i don’t know how you manage to do this every time. such a great reveal (despite the theories) as it did feel like a suprise to me still!!!

The Union Italians scene was so much longer in the original version in my brain-- But I condensed it upon writing because it didn't really add much. But it was essentially gonna be Tony tired and then while ordering they look at her and go "wait,,, have you taken a break?" :( "no" "WHAT??? KNOW YOUR FUCKING RIGHTS!!!!"
This makes me so happy that I nailed that feeling, I was worried honestly that it was too peaceful? But that peaceful sort of like tempered anger is exactly what I was trying to go for. Like we're trying to problem solve and it's all kind of funny but I am still so mad.

over the past two weeks I have been dealing with one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a community theatre.
I have a very strong suspicion that they are changing aspects of my design that they don't like without me there. As a designer I am offended by this. That's my intellectual property. I wrote that lighting program.
back in April I accepted a union position at a local venue - part of this agreement was to be able to design and operate a musical there. This show was opening the same night as a previous contract I had agreed to. (both would open the second week of june) As soon as I found this out I went to the producer of the non union contract, and let him know what had happened. I told him that I was willing to back off of the project because I was not likely to be available for evening runs during tech week. I offered to hire an assistant designer using the money out of my contract fee. He dismissed that offer and promised to be available to take notes for the runs and coordinate them with me, as long as I could be there during the day to do work notes. I agreed and continued to do all the paperwork and rehearsal prep that I could.
The set ended up being rather complex and the show required a good few specials, practicals, and an LED tape project. I have worked with all of these before but never had to tackle all of them on my own, but I was under the impression the producer would be willing to help me and be there. He was not.
I had to fight tooth and nail with my boss at the union job to get a day off to be able to be there for load in.
Anyway I am there load in day for 14 hours and dont even get to do a focus with my lights because the set is not complete. I focus on other things to do. As the set goes up I lose access to about half of my light fixtures. When the director comes in she tells me she would rather not deal with me at all that day and leaves before I can show her much of anything. When I leave that night my car battery dies.
Luckily my partner is able to take me into work the next morning to work for the community theatre, from 8am to 5pm, then I go to work the union gig from 6pm - 2am. I have a breakdown at the union gig cause I am stressing about how I am going to get both shows done with no car to get between the two.
basically the whole week is like this. I wake up early to go do community theatre, stay up late to do union work. on tuesday I am late to the theatre to get my car battery replaced. I am moving intelligent fixtures on my own on top of a ladder with wheels on the base (OSHA Violation). I am dealing with a data system the producer misrepresented his understanding of. the producer and director ar both over the age of 60 so they do not understand why I keep asking for them to record the rehearsals and they don't. So I am running blind on even the placement of people onstage.
Monday night they are just doing spacing so I give them just a full stage look. Tuesday I had a structure of all the blackouts and area lighting for the show. I let the stage manager know but she didnt hear me and just pulled up the same lights as the night before. On wednesday I text the director asking if the night had gone better on tuesday and she just said "a bit". I have no notes from the producer, because he has lost multiple operators and cannot take notes while filling in those roles. He takes no notes all week. The stage manager also does not take notes for me.
on thursday (the day before we open) I am finally given dark time to do my work. This is the first time i have been able to see my work under show conditions because the scenic team had to have all the lights on for safety. (that evening they throw a fit because I ask for more dark hours) I dont actually get that much done that day because the stage manager and i had JUST had time to sit and share cues and walk through the show (had to beg her to come in) the director was to come in and look at my stuff. She is over an hour late. When she does show up she is uninterested in what I have for her and talks the whole time about how unhappy she is to have had to come in. When she leaves I dont get to do any notes cause the scenic team is there and I can no longer keep the lights off.
Friday I complete all the notes. No one says anything and I feel really uncomfortable and I leave.
Saturday afternoon I get a text from the director stating that if I had watched the show i would have seen a million things wrong with it. I am very upset and send a screenshot to the producer who calls me and tells me he thinks the show looks great and that the director didnt mean it like that (gaslighting).
Monday night I get a call from him with multiple notes from the playwright about the looks that I had made. They claim because they did not see any of them till opening night that it was reasonable to ask for changes. I agree to some of them because they are basic illumination issues and some things I had also been unsure about if they would work for the scene. Others I can tell are just based on taste and spite.
on tuesday the producer texts me and asks if I can come to the theatre and do the notes. I tell him i have to be at my other job in an hour and I cannot come in. he says he will just do the notes himself. I tell him thats a violation of my intellectual property. He screams at me that it is his show and he will do what he wants with it. I tell him if thats how he feels he can pay out half of my contract and take my name off of the show. He screams at me he thinks I violated the contract anyway because of my absence at rehearsals. (he has not given me a contract)
I am absolutely over it at this point but I tell him I am willing to make some of the changes and i can walk him through how to do it over the phone so that I do not have to come in. He agrees and we do the changes I want to do. He says passive agressively "i guess I will go to bat for you with the playwright on the other changes" (this is his job)
The following day the performance report states that one of the gobos was obstructed during the final scene. These were one of the things the playwright wanted to cut out of spite and because of his bad taste in lighting. As a decent designer does I am talking to the stage manger about solutions when she abruptly tells me "it has been resolved". I email back asking how it had been resolved. Still waiting on the answer.
I have been vibrating with anxiety at the prospect of havinng to go to bat for myself with these people who have shown themselves to be both liars and passive aggressive. I want to just walk away entirely, but I dont want to have gone through all of that without getting somewhat paid for my work. I also left my tool bag there and it wouldnt sit right with me to not be there to strike the show.
My heart hurts a lot, and I feel very taken advantage of. My friend in the industry just keeps telling me to leave them in the dirt behind but I think its because she doesnt want to engage in actual problem solving with me. I feel so lost on what the right thing is to do. I dont want to deal with this producer anymore, and I am considering going to his board but I do not think they would even understand the situation

Im SO FUCKING SICK AND ANGRY AND TIRED OF SHITTY LIVE ACTION REMAKES ESPECIALLY for shit like stop motion, which is an entire beautiful painstakingly time consuming artform in of in itself. and theyre remaking it just to earn some money. Gonna make it more bland and take away the charm just because its “a popular thing we own that’ll make money because idiots will watch anything”.
Live action remakes piss me off because it feels like they never truly understand the charm of whatever they were remaking, and then they fail to create anything close to it. Theres also the point that Often times, animated films are animated for a reason. Because the story is suited for animation, animation can help every frame look artistic and beautiful and contribute to the stories and themes, ect…. live action can be good but disney doesnt put in the effort to make their live action films artistic. Plus many of the effects and cgi will look very outdated in a decade when animated works still hold up over time due to the stylization and artistic nature. The live action remakes are also very forgettable- none of them have left as great an impact as the originals and I often forget which films have had remakes already.
First of all: The nightmare before christmas has a wonderfully stylized aesthetic, all the characters are sculpted in a stylized spooky way thats full of character, and the worlds are very well crafted and theres so much visual stylistic contrast between the halloween and christmas worlds (most of my praise is for henry selick and the animators rather than tim burton btw. Since tim burton came up with the idea and then fucked off and wasnt even involved in the film at all. Tangential comment but wanted to give credit when i can since i feel like he always gets the credit for this movie) Do you really fucking think disney is going to take the effort to replicate those aesthetics well in a live action film. Do You REALLY Think It Would Have As Much As A Visual Impact As The Stop Motion Film?
Second: Nightmare before christmas literally takes place in a world full of monsters 😭 meaning animation is one of the BEST mediums that could be suited for it because monsters arent real and animation is for creating worlds that can’t exist in real life. IF YOU DO IT IN LIVE ACTION ITS NOT GOING TO WORK. Practical effect monsters can look cool but its fucking disney and god knows its just gonna be all cgi because cgi animators aren’t currently unionized to my knowledge and they can fucking take advantage of them to make themselves more money. Im also sick of them doing mostly cgi animated shit and calling it live action like they did with the insulting lion king shit. (no disrespect to cgi or cgi animators, just doing their jobs. But god knows big movie companies do not respect the medium and do it as cheaply as they can)
Fuck Disney. Fuck Live Action Remakes. Fuck Lazy Corporate Cash Grabs. Please support original works, original creators, writers, animators, unions, support the people who make great films that we love and Dont support disneys lazy cash grabs for the love of god. grahhh sorry for ranting but this shit makes me livid

Today was the real first day of realizing that they were going to actually take away our jobs, being really annoyed over how little our bosses did to prevent our job being cut out so i broke down at work, called my boss that didnt answer, asked my collegues if they were ok with me going home bc i just kept on crying. Texted boss and 2nd boss i went home. 2nd boss tried to call me tonight but i was doing union stuff and didnt hear the phone and then i crashed on the floor for i dont know how long 🥲 they texted to ask if i was ok and i was just yeah sure just dont ask if im ok or ill start crying again 🥲🥲
