it is like in a way really really really fucking sick and twisted that they love/hate buck and eddie so much that they have legitimately cursed them into never being able to find the kind of love they want with anyone except each other. the same people who wrote madney and bathena - these sweeping insane love stories about people who are just obsessed with and unerringly devoted to each other - are fundamentally disinterested in giving buck and eddie anything even close to that with anyone else. their love interests by contrast are stale and pushed aside and meaningless. taylor kelly was the closest they got to caring but even she, with all her development and backstory and screen time, could not compete. if anyone else had been there, any girlfriend, any wife, eddie's dying breath when he got shot would have been for chris. we know this. but it was buck, so he asked, are you hurt? like bobby would ask athena. like chim would ask maddie. like hen would ask karen. it's literally unfair like let them have each other at this point or give it UPPPPPP!!!!! good god!!!

Tommy must have been staring at his phone for far too long, because Donato pounces on him (metaphorically) in the dining area.

"I go on leave for a week and you flew a chopper into a hurricane?" Donato exclaims, punching him in the bicep.

"Ow," Tommy says out of habit. "The hurricane was mostly over by then, actually."

Donato huffs. "The things you get up to without my calming influence, Kinard."

Putting down his phone, Tommy levels a stare at his friend. "Last I remember, you're the one who scaled a cliff sans harness to get to a scared kid."

"And got chewed up for it after," Donato says brightly, holding up a finger. Her voice drops. "Seriously though. What's the brass gonna do about you guys?"

"Hopefully? Nothing. There's enough positive publicity that's got Simpson off our asses, so I'm hoping it'll blow over."

"Melton says you might be grounded for some time."

"I wouldn't be surprised." Tommy sighs and leans back in his chair. "As long as I'm not fired, I'm ok with the consequences." His lips twitch into a smile. "You'd have liked it though. I got to land the bird on an upside down cruise ship, in a storm."

"Oh fuck you, Kinard, you lucky bastard." Donato grins, her blonde bob bouncing as she jumps to her feet. "You're buying me lunch, by the way."

"Why?"

"Because you love me," she says, laughing as she jogs off to bother someone else. "Mentaiko bowl, you know the one!"

Tommy shakes his head fondly. He didn't know what about him had attracted Lucy Donato's friendship, but her effervescent energy always brightens up his day.

Which still doesn't help with Tommy's dilemma, which is one leggy firefighter named Evan Buckley. His sunny demeanor and inexplicably funny chatter in the middle of a helicopter heist and dangerous rescue had helped Tommy stay focused on the task. Afterwards, on the return journey, Tommy, Howie, Hen, Athena and Bobby caught up with one another, and both Eddie and Evan had been there, joining in the conversation whenever they can.

Tommy hopes no one actually saw him staring at Evan most of the time. It helped that they had sat opposite each other, and Evan's eyes had been so, so blue, the color of a clear summer sky, and his smile radiant. Of course it was easy to get numbers from everyone then - Tommy needed to update the ones for Athena and Bobby, and he added Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley into his contacts.

Eddie texted him the very next day asking if Tommy's up for a quick visit to the Diaz household, because his son Christopher wanted to meet the pilot who helped save Captain Nash, and Tommy decided that, heck it, he could do with some new friends, and went.

And for the next hour or so, he listened to Christopher wax rhapsodic about "my friend Buck", how brave and funny and clever Buck is, how selfless, how he rescued Chris during the tsunami, how good a friend he was, how he loved taking Chris to the zoo and built him a structure so that Chris could skateboard, how the lightning strike gave him insane math powers, how good a cook he is...

And the photos Chris shared about Evan all show Evan grinning happily, as if there's nothing else he'd rather be doing than be with Christopher and Eddie.

For a moment Tommy had thought that Eddie and Evan were an item, until Marisol showed up at the house and kissed Eddie in the kitchen. The relief Tommy felt is disproportionate to how much he knew Evan. Which is ridiculous - Evan might have a partner already, or might not be into men, and Evan hasn't ever texted Tommy yet. Eddie's already sending dozens of messages about the upcoming reunification fight.

The phone in Tommy's hands suddenly rings and he almost drops it in shock. Cursing, he quickly swipes up to answer. "Hello, this is Kinard."

"Oh, uh, hi Tommy. It's Evan. Buckley. E-Evan Buckley."

Tommy swallows his surprise even as a huge smile blossoms on his face. "Hey. I wasn't, um, expecting you to call."

Evan chuckles. Is that nervousness in his voice? "Listen. Um, I was, uh, I was wondering if you gave, like, tours? Of the station?"

Tommy's heart skips a beat. Does this mean Evan wants to transfer to Harbor? Then he realizes it's been too long since the question so he hastily says, "Yeah, yes. I could show you around, if you want."

It's a good thing he's not hooked up to anything measuring his pulse. Tommy thinks his heart may jump out of his chest.

On the other end of the line, Evan says, "Great! Uh, you-you have my number so. Text me possible dates and times to go over?"

"Sure," Tommy replies, his mouth dry. He thinks about fawn-colored hair, blue eyes, red lips. He swallows again. "See you soon, Evan."

"See you soon, Tommy."

ok so buck and tommy were both basically working the same shifts right?

buck obviously had to go to the hospital mid shift and eddie stayed back with him hence both of them were missing their shift.

tommy came as soon as his shift ended and then accompanied his boyfriend (I'm still giddy over it) buck to his loft and stayed the night to take care of him.

next day both of them were at the apartment when eddie came to treat buck and then probably left around the same time for their shifts and probably got off around the same time too which is why tommy was with buck and the 118 at the hospital waiting for denny.

then next day they went to the cemetery together for the billy boils funeral, all of this goes to show that buck and tommy try to take the same shifts or atleast as close as possible so they both can have their days off together and then spend it with each other :)))))))))

I'm so delusional and in love with them that I'll make any theory lmao

also tommy def won't fit into buck's clothes so either they went to his house to pick clothes or he keeps extra clothes at buck's place or maybe caries an overnight bag.

i just love these bratty and sassy boyfriends.

tommy is so whipped he attended a 200 yr old cowboy's funeral who cursed his beautiful boyfriend's face.

also I'm convinced that when the next day buck's face clears up it's because of what tommy said to the grave lmao

also the last scene was definitely foreshadowing. the way buck said that while looking at tommy.

also also eddie tommy friendship is so precious to me. they are our next Michael and bobby.

Anyway the friendship between eddie and tommy and buck together I love them, how nobody feels awkward and it's a beautiful thing this thing and this dynamic of friendship between the three of them

That touch to buck's leg, as if the touching him was to see that he actually is okay and at the same time comforts buck, but in my opinion also he that touch was to say that buck is alive and he is okay

The look between tommy and eddie and like when you're in a serious moment and you don't have to look at your best friend or you start laughing, that's tommy and eddie

This succession of scenes of Tommy taking care of Buck so casually, as if it's already a thing that happens in their daily life and it breaks my heart into a thousand pieces, because of how cute they are - This scene is so intimate and it's so natural especially with Buck that you see him so quiet, I like this, even though you don't see so many scenes in the everyday life between Tommy and Buck, these scenes make it clear that they are thriving more and more

“how's that?” in that tone of voice, in that voice so sweet, I don't know how buck didn't melt in that instant, I would have died there in that moemnto

Of course we know that buck told him to sleep on the bed and instead no tommy even though he knows that he will sleep not well on that couch, especially after an exasperating shift, he stays there sleeping on the couch even though he may not be able, perhaps, to rest well, but he does it anyway in order to be next to buck and to be near him for whatever buck needs

How tommy takes care of buck, in such a natural way, with gestures full of love

And in all this Tommy surely woke up before Buck to prepare them breakfast, tell me if they don't look like a married couple, because they are, and how Tommy likes Buck and how he takes care of him and stays there listening to everything Buck says, without it being forced but on the contrary, and something so normal and intimate

seeing tommy's reaction, reminded me of tommy with maurice, a panicked tommy AHAHAHHA,

"Evan dont' freak out" he was obviously saying it more to himself, than to buck - like "I must not panic, Evan needs me, I can't run away now, first let's call eddie and let him do all the work" HAHAHA

HOW CAN I NOT LOVE THEM, then with that little voice of Tommy when he says that, as if to say “ honey I love you so much, I could never tell you that you are gross, and if you were then you would be my gross”

When Buck said “so I'm disgusting,” I don't know why but his face made me think of this image.

It literally makes me think about the difference between tommy and eddie with buck in this state, but in a positive sense I mean: tommy as a boyfriend regardless of how buck is, he loves him anyway and doesn't care about those boils on his face, while eddie as a best friend doesn't give a damn about this thing and gets scared of buck in that state, it makes me laugh because that's exactly what a best friend would do

Eddie saying that he has to see it from the other side, that he doesn't need to wear a mask for Halloween this year, MADE ME LAUGH SO MUCH BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I WOULD TELL MY BEST FRIEND IF SHE WAS IN THIS STATE, LIKE WHO CARES ABOUT HER FEELINGS, I HAVE TO SAY IT

"stop picking", again with that sweet voice, while he tells to buck, and gives them the coffee, more in love and married than this, the wedding is missing and we're fine

This along with 7x04 where Tommy says he was jealous because he wanted to be part of 118 and because they were like a family, and in 7x10 where he says he doesn't talk to his father and has a bad relationship with him and also with this scene it makes you understand how much Tommy's past is a tortuous past and maybe he never had a person who took care of him, and this makes you understand HOW MUCH I NEED TO SEE AN EPISODE OF TOMMY BEGINS

However, I would like to see a scene where we see Tommy having a bad day and if before he had no one to take care of him, or who was just with him, now he has Buck, Eddie and the whole 118 and he understands that he is no longer alone but has a family that is there for him.

It's obvious if eddie had been there too, he would have said after seeing buck and tommy dressed elegantly tpo "you're both idiots, but it's clear that you're made for each other", and then continued telling tommy "finally you too who indulges all his weirdness and I'm not the only one, welcome to the club" I WOULD HAVE CRIED IF A SCENE LIKE THAT HAD HAPPENED

This episode is one of my favorites about buck and tommy, not only does buck call tommy "my boyfriend" but he also says that the people around us make life worth living, WHILE HE'S LOOKING AT TOMMY, BRO IF AFTER THIS YOU DON'T SEE HOW MADLY IN LOVE THEY ARE WITH EACH OTHER I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU DO IT, LITERALLY THIS IS ENDGAME (I HOPE SO)

A/N: This is only my second time writing for Eddie and last time it was a co-write. I did a whole bunch of research and had some proof reading from the lovely @thatonewriter15 and @muchamusedaboutnothing. Hopefully this is a somewhat accurate representation... 🤞🏻

Trudging up the stairs towards her apartment, she cursed the elevators for being broken. All she wanted to do was collapse into her bed and sleep for two days. Unfortunately, that was impossible since it was only Wednesday and she had an important meeting first thing in the morning.

Passing the third floor, she considered if she was going to eat before she went to bed. She was starving, but cooking seemed like too much effort and time. Then she considered having something delivered but guessed that would take even longer than cooking. She decided to just eat a spoonful of peanut butter so that she wasn’t battling hunger while trying to fall asleep.

Finally reaching the fifth floor, she exited the stairwell and took the four steps to her door. It was a small victory for climbing the stairs— at least she didn’t have further to go once she got to her floor.

She unlocked the door and pushed it open. Immediately, she dumped her purse, jacket, and laptop case on the floor beside the door before pulling her shoes off one at a time to drop in the pile.

Rounding the corner into the living room, she gasped. Her favorite scented candle was lit on the coffee table next to several containers of Chinese take-out. Eddie stood from the couch as she approached.

“What are you doing here?” she asked as she let herself fall into his embrace.

He pecked a kiss to her temple as he pulled back to look at her. “You sounded a little overwhelmed when you called earlier. So I had Buck take Christopher for the night, and I brought you dinner.”

Tears welled in her eyes as she was overcome with emotions. “I love you. You are the best. I was about to eat some peanut butter because I’m too exhausted to cook or wait for delivery.”

“And let me guess, you’ve barely eaten anything all day?” he chastised.

She shrugged. “I had a bagel for breakfast.”

He pulled her over to sit on the couch. “I’m glad I came then.”

“I’m really glad you did.” She grabbed a fortune cookie while he started to open the other containers. “Are you staying all night?”

He nodded. “I’m all yours. Buck is taking Christopher to the zoo tomorrow.” He dumped some rice on the plates he’d gotten out of the kitchen. “Chicken, beef, or shrimp?”

“Some of each, please.” She set the fortune cookie back down as she stood. ”I’m gonna go change out of these work clothes. I’ll be right back.”

Before Eddie could even finish dishing up the food, she returned in sweats and a shirt she’d stolen from him.

As she sat back down, she picked up and opened the fortune cookie. She pulled out the piece of paper. “‘Life will soon become interesting,’” she read. “I think it’s already plenty interesting.”

Eddie chuckled. “Yeah, where’s the one that says we get a vacation soon?”

He finished adding everything to their plates as she flipped on the television and started an episode of How I Met Your Mother.

They ate in a comfortable silence and had finished before the twenty-minute episode had ended. He set the mostly-empty plates on the table, and she shifted to curl in against his side while he wrapped his arm snugly around her shoulder.

As the credits rolled, he asked, “Bed or another episode?”

She yawned. “One more. I’m probably going to fall asleep, but I’m comfy.”

He pressed a kiss to her forehead as the TV rolled over into a new episode on its own. “As you wish, mi amor.”

She had just started to doze off when, suddenly, she was overcome with a familiar, distinct, full-body tingling sensation along with intense nausea. She quickly shifted to leaning forward on the edge of her seat. “Oh, no. No, no, no.”

Eddie reached out and placed a tentative hand between her shoulder blades. “What’s wrong?”

She stood and moved over to the empty dining room, which she kept devoid of a table and other furniture precisely for this reason. “Seizure,” she stated as calmly as she could before lying down in the middle of the floor.

“Oh, uh, okay.” Eddie was surprised, but quickly stood. He grabbed a blanket from the recliner and moved to sit beside her. He knew about her epilepsy and the medications she took for it. However, in the eighteen months they’d been dating, she’d never had a seizure. He lifted her head to slide the folded blanket underneath.

She let out a quiet whimper before her eyelids fluttered closed.

“Okay. You’re okay. I got you.” He pulled out his phone, opened the timer, and set it on the floor. He continued to whisper soft reassurances to her and started the timer as soon as she started to seize.

Despite his training and having treated patients with seizures at work, he couldn’t help but notice the way his hands shook as he carefully kept her rolled on her side. “You’re okay,” he repeated, more to reassure himself than anything. He continued to repeat it several more times as he waited for her to stop.

He felt his anxiety spike again as he watched the timer hit four minutes. He thought about what time it was, trying to figure out which shift was manning the 118 currently. He knew if she hit five minutes, he would have to call 9-1-1. As the timer rolled past four and a half minutes, her movements finally began to slow. He breathed a sigh of relief and pushed some hair out of her face as she stilled. Next, he used the corner of the blanket to wipe the saliva that had dribbled out.

For his own peace of mind, he checked her pulse, satisfied that it was steady and only slightly tachy. Next, he counted her breaths, ensuring her breathing was also back to normal. Then he sat there, running his fingers gently through her hair, and waited for her to wake.

Finally, after several minutes of anxiously waiting, she groaned.

“Hey, sweetheart. You with me?”

Slowly, she cracked her eyes open and looked around for several moments before finally landing on his face. She was clearly confused and still disoriented.

“You’re okay. You just had a seizure,” he explained. “Do you remember feeling it coming on?”

She thought for a minute before finally nodding. Groaning again, she rolled onto her back and threw an arm over her face. “Trash,” she slurred.

Eddie shifted away to grab the trash can sitting in the corner and move it beside her. “Do you want to sit up?”

“Not yet.” She lied there, trying to regain her bearings.

He took her hand in his and ran his thumb softly over her knuckles. “Anything I can do?”

“Mmmm, make the jackhammer in my head stop? And the nausea, too.” She rolled back onto her side before starting to push herself into a sitting position and pulling the trash can between her knees. “This blows.”

Leaning forward, he placed a chaste kiss on her temple. “I know. I’m sorry. Do you want something for the headache?”

“Not yet. I don’t want to puke it right back up.”

She didn’t know how long she sat there, taking slow, deep breaths in an attempt to clear the nausea. All the while, Eddie rubbed soothing circles across her back. The soreness was already starting to settle in all her muscles. Eventually, she pushed away the trash can and leaned into him.

“Ya know, this isn’t the kind of interesting I was hoping for. Stupid fortune cookie,” she grumbled.

“Me either. You think you’re ready to move?” he asked as he wrapped his arms around her gently.

“Yeah.” She nodded. He stood, and she reached a hand out for him. “Help me up?”

Instead of pulling her up, he bent down and slid one arm under her knees and the other around her back and easily lifted her. He walked slowly towards her bedroom, cautious of making the nausea worse, then set her gently on the bed. “What do you need?”

“Uh, I will take that Tylenol now. Plus, water and some Advil for in the morning, and the trash can by the bed,” she listed, then, with a pout, added, “Please?”

“Okay, I’ll be right back.”

She laid back into her pillows as she waited for him to return. Next thing she knew, she was peeling her eyes open to find Eddie beside her, rubbing a hand across her head.

“Here, take these and then you can go to sleep.” He handed her the pills and then opened a bottle of water before offering that as well.

Once she’d swallowed them, she took a few deep breaths to clear the flare of nausea. “Thank you.”

“Of course.” He pressed another kiss to her hairline.

“As much as seizures suck, it’s really nice having you here to help. I’ve just slept on the floor in there so many times because I just didn’t have the energy to move.”

“I’m glad I was here. I hate that you’ve had to go through that alone.”

“I hate that I have to go through it at all.” She sighed. “And I just broke my longest streak. At least I didn’t try to take a chunk out of my tongue.”

“Ouch.”

She nodded. “Yeah, one time, I had to get stitches from biting it so bad.”

He cringed. “That sounds awful.”

“Mmhmm,” she hummed, eyes fluttering closed. “Work is really going to suck tomorrow.”

“No, it won’t.” Eddie argued. ”You’re taking the rest of the week off.”

“I can’t!’ she declared, opening her eyes and leaning forward. “I have too many things to get done and a meeting first thing that we’ve been working toward for three weeks.”

“You just had a seizure,” he pointed out the obvious. “For the first time in, what, two years? And a long one at that. You were about twenty seconds away from a trip to the hospital. You don’t think your stress levels had something to do with this?” His tone was one of frustration, but she could tell he was just worried.

She sighed, knowing he was right. “Maybe.”

Eddie climbed into the other side of the bed and settled nearly in the middle. “So take the long weekend. Just relax and get some rest. Doctor’s orders.”

Shifting to curl into his side, she giggled. “You’re not a doctor.”

He huffed. “Medic’s orders. Is that better? Or I can call a doctor.”

“Don’t you dare.”

Rolling impossibly closer to her, he pressed one more kiss to her forehead. “Good night, mi amor.”

When she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was her alarm clock. She was surprised to find it was nearly ten already. Slowly, she shifted onto her back and turned her head to look at the other side of the bed. She found Eddie sitting on the bed, scrolling through his phone.

“Good morning,” he greeted as he noticed she was awake. “How’re you feeling?”

“I’m okay. Just a bit sore. Which is pretty much what I expected.” She took Eddie’s hand in hers. “And maybe a little grateful that I got to sleep in and I don’t have to get up and go to work.”

He lifted her hand to kiss her knuckles. “You needed it.”

“Oh, shit!” she panicked. “I didn’t call. I missed the meeting. I’m gonna get fired!”

Eddie shushed her. “I called. Just breathe. It’s okay. I called earlier and talked to your boss. He knows you’ll be out today and tomorrow and told me to tell you to take Monday also, if you need to.”

She took a deep breath and let herself relax. “Okay. Thank you.”

“Of course. How about some breakfast?”

“Mmm. Yes, please.”

Eddie let go of her hand and got up off the bed. “Stay there. I’ll be right back.”

He disappeared out of the room, and she could hear him moving around her kitchen. A few minutes later, he returned with a plate and set it on the bed in front of her.

She looked up at him, surprised. “Since when do you make omelettes?”

“Uhh, well, never?” He laughed. “I may have called in reinforcements. Bobby dropped it off earlier. I just reheated it according to his very direct instructions.”

“Eddie! I could have just had some cereal or something. You didn’t need to make him drive over here so early on his day off.” She reached over to grab her phone off the nightstand.

“I figured you could use real food. I was going to order delivery, but Bobby offered.”

“Why would he have offered?” She opened Bobby’s contact to send him a thank you text. “Oh. You told him about last night.”

“I couldn’t fall asleep. Then they were all texting in the group thread. So when they asked why I was still up, I told them. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have without asking you first.”

“No, it’s fine. It’s not like my epilepsy is a secret. They’re your—our— friends. I’m sure I would have told them anyway.”

He nodded. “Okay. Eat and then you can go back to sleep for a bit. If you want.”

She cut a piece off the omelette and ate it. As she chewed, she spoke, “Bobby says we’re invited over there for dinner if I’m feeling up to it. I told him we would let them know a little later today.”

“Sounds like a good plan to me.”

She took another bite of her food. “Aren’t you going to eat?”

Shaking his head, he explained, “I ate earlier.”

“Oh, right.” She glanced at the clock. “I forgot it was so late already.”

“Anything else I can get for you?”

She contemplated for a moment. “Umm, maybe a glass of apple juice?”

He disappeared from the room with a simple nod.

Soon after he returned, she finished her omelette and he took the plate into the kitchen.

“Did you want to go back to sleep?” he asked.

“How about a shower and then a movie on the couch?” she countered, throwing off the blankets she was still tucked under. As she stood, dizziness flared, causing her to sway slightly before sitting back down.

Eddie was in front of her instantly, steadying her. “How about a bath instead?”

“Sounds perfect.”

what is buck and tommy's first major argument about + how does it end 🎤

ohhhh jack this is such a good question!! ♡

i had to sit back and think a little bit, but what i came up with us that i think it would honestly just come down to both of them having a bad day and i think they deal with those in completely different ways. at this point, i think they have been together in a serious relationship for a decent amount of time - maybe six months or so? and i think they become very serious very quickly so six months is certainly long enough that they’re starting to feel more comfortable that the other person isn’t going anywhere, and you know how sometimes you lash out at the person you know is going to stay? yeah.

because of his childhood, i headcanon tommy as someone who finds solace in solitude, and while i think there are certainly times where he craves affection and company, i think it’s just as common that he just. needs to be alone. i think he knows that if he doesn’t get that alone time, his frustration is going to get directed at people who haven’t done anything to deserve it, and he’s certainly responsible enough to handle that and prevent it.

now, buck? buck is someone who we know to seek comfort in the people he loves. we have seen him go to eddie, to maddie, to hen, to bobby, and so on - he is just someone who needs to talk, and to feel embraced and listened to, and loved.

and tommy would absolutely be his first choice at this point - not only because he’s his boyfriend, but because tommy is tommy. he’s older, and he’s smart, and he’s kind, and he’s caring, and he always says what buck needs to hear. he never makes buck feel as if he’s too much, or too needy.

their awful, terrible, nightmarish days happen to fall on the same day.

i don’t think either of them are awful to each other, there’s absolutely no name calling, or cursing each other out, but they just kind of… clash. i think buck really wants to just go home and sit on the couch with tommy and watch a movie (love actually is just fine because he loves watching tommy watch it) and it’s not that tommy doesn’t want that, he just needs to be alone first.

and i think this would be perfectly fine if they communicated - but they don’t. i don’t think they have the energy to do that, so it just kind of ends up being a mess where buck misses him and wants him to come over, and feels a little blown off (i don’t think tommy ghosts him but maybe his texts are a little more chilly than they usually are) while tommy feels frustrated because - he’ll be there in a few hours, if evan can just calm down and leave him alone, he’ll be fine and he’ll hold him because he needs that too, but just. not right now. (again, i think tommy isn’t as cold as buck feels he is, and buck isn’t nearly as clingy as tommy feels, i think it’s just completely exaggerated in their own heads because they’re already upset for reasons that don’t have anything to do with each other.)

this is just the pre-argument, though. i think the real argument comes later, when tommy comes over to the loft (and at this point, he’s calmed down, he’s fine, he just wants to have a good night with his boyfriend and listen to him talk about his bad day, because now he’s been alone for a while so he has the energy to do so.) and he realizes that there is still friction between them - because here’s the thing:

we have only really seen tommy from buck’s pov this go-around, and that’s why he feels so… perfect? in a lot of ways? and again, i don’t think that buck is in any way upset that tommy couldn’t come over the second he needed him - he’s a grown man, he’s fine - but i think it’s the way that he felt tommy kind of blowing him off, and not communicating. i think it makes him feel annoyed and ignored (valid) and i think it kind of drags tommy down from this pedestal he has had him on?

in the end, i think tommy snaps and i think that’s exactly what he says - something along the lines of “i’m not perfect” etc etc. and i think they argue for a while, but they ultimately end up working things out that very night. i think tommy genuinely apologizes, and so does buck - i think buck reluctantly confesses that although he has grown a lot, and worked on himself, and become more confident, he does still ultimately have this fear of being too much, and i think tommy’s face just. softens, and he tells him that he never wants him to feel that way, and that he wasn’t and would never be annoyed with buck wanting or needing him around - it was just… everything else, and terrible timing, and bad communication. and then i think tommy explains some things about his childhood that helps buck understand why he may need to be alone sometimes, and how that’s how he finds comfort and makes peace with a bad day.

in the end, they ultimately know and understand each other so much better, and they make a vow to just. communicate. and they’re falling even deeper in love with each other.

I woke up to a dash full of bones, and I thought to myself: What a day to be a moopsy!

But then I realized it was the same kind of bones people have been trying to force feed me since May. I'm a moopsy with standards, give me herringbone, funny bone, trombone, Jackson Rathbone (jk I've never seen Twilight), any other kind of bone.

Please don't force a moopsy into vegetarianism.

Oh, and I've read that opinion piece. It's certainly one of the articles ever written.

First of all, I feel like I'm in a time loop, I can't believe I have to dig through the vault to find this post from June. Tommy wasn't taking Eddie on an "adventure" in 7x04. Both flying and combat sports have been Tommy's passions way before Eddie showed up in his life. They happened to share common interests, so Tommy asked Eddie to tag along for the ride, but he was going to Vegas anyway, solo or not.

Exploring your partner's interests would be more like... I don't know, showing up to a groom-less (and fun-less) bachelor party while being on standby because it's important to your partner? Listening to him ramble about a dead outlaw even though you're so tired from your shift and taking care of him all night that you're basically mumbling half-asleep, yet still manages to catch that he's said "crossed" twice? Thinking your partner is stressing himself over a stupid curse but you still put on a nice suit, drive him to the cemetery and stand behind him while he gives a century old mummy a eulogy, for it to unexpectedly turn into a moment of connection between you two?

Secondly, I'm not even getting into the whole "slow burn is the only valid form of romance" thing. I just never imagined there would be a day I see the words "slow burn" and Bathena put together. They're the antithesis of slow burn. They're explosions in the form of beautiful fireworks. I understand that the author only started the show about a month ago? But literally, in the first episode of S7, Athena told the therapist that while she loved her husband, she didn't know how to just slow down and chill out with him. The cruise ship disaster arc ended with them bonding over yet another near death experience. Life's too short for slow to them.

Thirdly, 9-1-1 doesn't really do cute dates? It's either in the ending montage of an arc or it's a setup for some terrible misfortune afterwards. It's not a YA style queer coming-of-age show either, the best you'll see Buck navigating through queer spaces is speeding from "calling himself an ally while on a date with a guy" through "walking into a room full of people with a soot eating grin". (While we're on that, I guess I have to dig out another post from June about the first date closet comment. Tommy took the initiative to tell Eddie they were just hanging out, and Eddie bought it. He didn't mind keeping Buck's sexuality private, but he did mind Buck pushing him back into the closet with the hot chick lie.)

Finally, Tommy has been relatively involved in the Fire Fam circle ever since his re-introduction. He literally stole borrowed a helicopter and flew the 118 to the Pacific Ocean just to save Bathena. He was at the wedding, he was at the medal ceremony, and now he's part of the hospital vigil for Denny. And each time he's not just there for Buck, he's there for Chimney, he's there for Hen too. For someone who puts so much emphasis on "slow burn", the author seems rather hasty in pronouncing BuckTommy dead on arrival, after watching a total of 5 out of 18 episodes this season (with 2 of them heavily featuring passengers on the plane and putting the whole fire fam to the side no less). Every relationship takes time to build up, I'm sure the author understands that, welcoming a new member into your family is not a question of yes or no, it's also a question of when. Tommy has mentioned 3 times how much he wanted to have a team like that behind his back, how alone he was navigating through life with only negative influence like his father or Gerrard. Buck's story in 8x05 started as a spooky comedy about a mummy, but ended as a heartwarming tale of Buck empathizing with Billy's loneliness and declaring himself part of Billy's posse. So what do you think will be the more satisfying payoff to Tommy's story? Him being formally welcomed to the family eventually? Or having him break up with Buck then cast aside with a mere "lol sucks not being a main ig"?

Buck stays with Eddie and Chris for a week. Two weeks. Three weeks. More.

He goes back to the loft a few times, of course. For more clothes, or to check his mail, or just to give the place a quick dust and open the windows for a bit. When Eddie has long shifts, he sometimes takes Chris there to spend the night so they can play video games on Buck’s bigger TV and order from the Korean barbecue place that doesn’t deliver to Eddie’s house. Truthfully, the ink had barely been dry on his lease when everything with the Devil’s Mouth went down. He hasn’t really had time for the loft to feel like home…but more and more he’s realizing it’s never going to feel like anything other than a (very expensive) storage unit.

Eddie’s house is home. It’s too early to be thinking in terms of permanence and forever, but in his heart, Buck knows that home is always going to be wherever Eddie and Chris are.

Before he knows it, it’s been over a month. A month of the most dizzying ups and downs, the most breathtaking upheaval. A month of falling asleep by Eddie’s side at night and waking up to him every morning. A month of slotting himself into Christopher’s morning routines even more firmly than he already had been. A month of taking care of his Diaz boys the way he’s realizing he’s always wanted to and being cared for in return in the way he doesn’t think anyone has done for him since before Maddie left their parents’ house.

He and Eddie take things slow—slower than he ever has in any relationship, honestly. Part of it is due to Chris’s presence. Buck’s never dated (hah, ‘dated’…as if that word could really encompass what Eddie is to him, what he wants Eddie to be to him, what he wants them to be to each other) someone with a kid before. It’s not like he didn’t understand how much having a child affects somebody’s schedule—hell, he’s been in the thick of raising Christopher with Eddie for months, he can acknowledge that now—but wow, it’s really hard to find time for intimacy and alone time with a child around. Especially one they’re still trying to keep their relationship a secret from for now.

But the greater part of it is they just don’t want to rush things. Don’t want to put any pressure on each other, on this thing that is growing between them.

Eddie and Shannon were so young when they got together, and even when they were apart, Eddie says he never felt right straying from his vows. Buck would be lying if he said his heart doesn’t flip every time he really lets himself think about that—about the fact that after all this time, after everything he’s been through, Eddie finally feels ready to try again, to be with someone again, love someone again and he chose him. On the other side, this is the first time Buck’s been with someone and had any expectation of a future. He can’t even completely blame the curse for it. Even if he hadn’t been cursed, he knows most of his previous relationships were transient. Selene and Derek had cared about him, and he about them, but there had never been the kind of passion and need he feels for Eddie. What he’d had with Rafael down in Peru hadn’t even progressed to a situationship—more an extended hookup (and really, human/merperson relationships are already extremely uncommon for obvious reasons). Abby is the only other person he’s ever felt something for a fraction as strongly as he feels for Eddie. The only other person he’s ever seen himself trying to build some kind of future with.

And even that is nothing compared to what he feels for Eddie. He knows it’s really unfair to compare the two—the combined weight of his curse and her own frustrated dreams and ambitions was always hanging over their relationship. He had loved her, and he knows she loved him (as much as she’d been able to, anyway), but even in his wildest dreams, what he had with Abby never felt as real as this. As solid. As sure. It’s breathtaking. Unbelievable. And yet, somehow, it’s real. It’s happening.

Buck can have this. He can keep this. A month ago, all that was looming on the horizon for him was a horrific death, and now he has this. A family. A home. A future.

But it’s also been month of figuring out how to exist without the golden light of his magic. A month of catching himself trying to reach for all the little charms and enchantments that have come to him as easy as breathing for as long as he can remember. A month of changing the way he thinks and reacts, of retraining his instincts. It’s like trying to re-write muscle memory and it’s so hard, but he’s doing it.

He has to do it. If he wants a life with Eddie and Christopher, if he wants to see Maddie have the future she deserves so, so much…he has to be able to exist without his magic.

Physically, he’s completely recovered from the backlash shock and has been for weeks. He can’t go for his recertification until he gets a formal assessment of his magic…which he won’t be able to do until he’s had a physical and psych evaluation by department-approved therapists. He has no doubt he’s going to get the all-clear for physical, but he can’t get cleared by psych until he’s completed at least two courses of alchemical therapy to try and heal his connection to his magic. He’s still on medical leave and partial disability until then, but like he told Bobby, he’s already filled out the paperwork to schedule his recertification. He just needs a couple signatures.

He's so close to the finish line he can taste it.

He’s just finishing chopping the last of the herbs for the chimichurri he wants to serve with the steaks they’re planning on grilling for dinner tonight when he hears Eddie enter the kitchen. A moment later, his partner’s arms wind around his waist and he smiles as Eddie just leans almost his whole weight against him, resting his cheek against the back of Buck’s neck.

“Reached the summit of Mt. Laundry, yet?” Buck asks playfully, setting the knife aside to rest his hands over Eddie’s. They’re halfway through Eddie’s first forty-eight off in a while, and the afternoon has been dedicated to getting on top of some of the larger chores around the house that they’ve admittedly been neglecting. Buck has spent the last couple hours deep cleaning the bathrooms while Eddie tackled the kitchen and the truly impressive amount of laundry they’ve been letting build up.

“Why do we own so many damn socks?” Eddie grumbles. “And how many Henleys do you have, man?”

Buck frowns at that, a little shiver of unease running through him. His things have been slowly migrating over from the loft—not all of it, of course. That would be silly; he’s barely three months into a year-long lease, and it’s not like Eddie has actually told him he wants him to stay here permanently. So no, most of his stuff is still at the loft, but he’s been bringing the things he uses often, the clothes he feels most comfortable in. It’s just easier and cuts down on the trips he has to take back and forth, and hell, it’s not like a bunch of his possessions didn’t already sort of live at Eddie’s house. But maybe it’s too much? Eddie hates clutter, after all. Maybe he doesn’t actually want Buck’s things taking up so much space, maybe Buck’s doing that thing he does again where he takes up more room than he’s been offered, and Eddie’s trying to drop some hints that it’s time for Buck to start migrating things back to the loft maybe—

His head throbs, a little stab of pain radiating from his temple, and he reaches up absently to rub it in a gesture that he doesn’t even realize has been more and more frequent.

“I, uh, what’re you talking about, I own the normal amount of shirts, Eddie,” he says, trying to laugh it off even as anxiety spikes through him. ��Is—do you want me to take some stuff back to the loft, or…?” He means it to sound casual, offhanded even, but he knows he’s missed the mark when Eddie’s arms tighten around him and he raises his head from Buck’s shoulder blade.

“What? No,” he protests immediately, tugging at Buck until he turns around. “Hey. No. I like it. I like having your stuff here. I mean—look, I know we haven’t made any concrete decisions, but you know we like you being here, right? Chris loves it. I love it. Hell, I think Chris would stop speaking to me if I let you start taking stuff back to the loft.”

Buck laughs, some of the tightness in his chest easing, the throbbing in his head receding as Eddie pulls him closer, slotting their bodies flush against each other. “I could…my building allows sub-letting with prior approval,” he says slowly, trailing one hand up Eddie’s arm to curl his hand around the back of his partner’s neck. “Not that I—it’s too soon, I know that, but just…it’s an option. For whenever we, uh, we want options.”

Eddie nods to himself, a faraway look entering his warm, brown eyes. After a moment, he chuckles lightly. “It’s weird, but it doesn’t feel like it’s too soon, does it?” he says quietly. “All the things you’re supposed to do…you know, getting to know each other, figuring out all the things you love about each other and the things that drive you nuts? We already did that.”

Buck’s heart thumps in his chest, and he has to bite down on the wide, hopeful grin that wants to split his face. “There’s things that drive you nuts about me?” he asks teasingly, instead of the question he really wants to.

Eddie laughs, and kisses him. “You suck at picking up wet towels.”

“Yeah, well, you leave the butter out on the counter.”

“I can’t find anything in the kitchen anymore.”

“You hog the blankets at night.”

“You turned Chris into a nonfiction junkie.”

“Hey, he’s already met his AR goal, like, twice as fast as everyone else in his class,” Buck laughed, tugging Eddie still closer to him, running his hand through the short hairs at the back of his partner’s neck.

“Yeah, but Pete the Cat is way easier to read at night than firsthand accounts of the first arctic expeditions!” Eddie leans in to nip at the underside of his jaw.

Slow. They are taking things slow on the physical front, but that doesn’t mean that they’ve been standing still.

Unfortunately, Chris will be home from school soon so they won’t be breaking any new territory today. Eddie pulls back after a moment, his face turning serious. “Maybe you could get the ball rolling on the sub-leasing paperwork? I’ve been thinking…we’re really pushing our luck sneaking you back out here in the mornings. Shannon and I have talked. I don’t want to hide things from Christopher. Especially things like this.”

Buck goes still, a thrill of excitement and apprehension running through him. “You wanna tell Chris?” he asks. “Cause I’m, I’m fine with waiting for a while. This is a huge change, I get that. I mean—most people don’t introduce new partners for months. Or, like, a year!”

Eddie smiles at him—the warm, fond smile that Buck secretly likes more than just about any other expression on Eddie’s handsome face. “I don’t think it counts if the kid already loves you. Besides…you belong here, Buck.”

Eddie doesn’t know—cannot know, has no way of knowing—how long Buck has been waiting for someone to say that to him and mean it. Truly mean it. Eddie says it so casually. As easily as if he’s rattling off inventory in the back of the ambulances or reciting a weather report. As though it’s a simple, unarguable fact and not something Buck has longed for and thought was out of reach for what feels like his entire damn life.

Buck isn’t ashamed to admit he’s been struggling with the absolute whiplash that is his life now. Sometimes he feels like he blacked out on the street after channeling the leyline and woke up in an entirely new reality; one where he has to relearn every rule and expectation. It’s harder than anything he’s ever had to do, but if it gives him this…if it gives him this, it is a reality he’ll gladly stay in forever.

“Okay,” he says softly. “Okay, then, let’s tell Chris.”

i wonder if most of the pushback with regard to 8x05 comes from the fandom being so sure that eddie is going to figure out he’s gay before he shaves the mustache. i think that belief has led to there being this sense of ‘if gay eddie/buddie doesn’t happen now and like this then it’s never going to happen and we’re running out of time’, which isn’t true. i admittedly did get caught up how the fandom theorized episodes 5-7 would play out (bt fight and breakup in 5-6, gay eddie and mustache shaved in 6, possible feelings realization in 7) and felt disappointed with 8x05 because of that, but after rewatching the episode and reevaluating the expectations i had for it and why i even had them in the first place i feel a lot better about it. eddie’s arc is only just starting! we know the shaving scene is at the end of the next episode, and imo it would be extremely rushed for eddie to realize he’s gay within that time frame based on what we’ve seen from him so far. eddie has clearly been thinking a lot about the situation he’s in but his sense of self is still wrapped up in being a father. my guess now is that he will confide in someone about feeling completely lost without christopher in his life and the mustache being a manifestation of that, and they will tell him that altering his physical appearance isn’t the solution he needs to change his circumstances and encourage him to figure out who he is outside of being a father. the synopsis for 8x06 says a call dealing with a divorced man will open old wounds, so if that's about eddie then i think that he will likely also confess to shannon wanting a divorce and how he’s been lying to himself about the true nature of their marriage and the effect that lie has had on all his subsequent romantic relationships. shaving off the mustache will be what kickstarts his self-discovery arc instead of being the moment he accepts his sexuality like i’d thought previously.

as far as the bt breakup goes — if the show does end up going the route of tommy being abby’s ex and that striking a nerve with buck, i think that could be the catalyst that allows him the freedom to admit all the other things about tommy/the relationship that he dislikes but has so far disregarded in an effort to make the relationship work. the comments buck made in 8x05 (“oh so i am gross?” and “my own boyfriend won’t even kiss me”) point toward him feeling dissatisfied and frustrated with tommy. i also wanted to add on to what the other anons have said about bt’s lack of intimacy and say that i find it to be apparent in the dialogue as well. what stuck out the most to me about the daddy issues joke last season was that although buck and tommy had been seeing each other for a couple months and were presumably fucking, tommy still says “god i hope so” instead of something like “i know you do” which would have established a sense of familiarity between the two. everything about the way they’re physically positioned in scenes and how they speak to each other shows that the writers are not interested in developing tommy or the relationship beyond what’s strictly necessary.

also! something i liked about the episode was how it showcased how much trust and respect buck has for eddie versus how little he cares for tommy’s input. tommy and eddie both tried to talk buck out of believing he’d been cursed, but he only relented because of eddie (the pointed “if you say so”). even tommy recognized that he was incapable of swaying buck and deferred to eddie (“listen to the medic”). buck protested when tommy called him out for picking his skin but quieted when eddie backed him up. tommy doesn’t know best, eddie does. also the way buck kept talking about billy boils despite tommy’s multiple (very condescending and patronizing!) attempts at getting him to stop… buck does not like that man lol

Thank you for sending me such a thought-provoking message. I love this post entirely, but I have one small correction regarding your first piece about Eddie’s journey. From my perspective, it's misconception that Eddie’s gay discovery hasn’t started. I always thought the Buddie feelings realization theories were too fast, too soon since they would be a core couple, and like Chimney and Maddie before, their romantic development would happen spread across the season. However, we’ve been watching Eddie’s gay discovery storyline unfold the moment he said “Tommy’s gay?”, learned he and Buck were on a date, then instead of breaking up, stayed with Marisol. So I don’t believe it’d be rushed if he has a small realization that he keeps privately to himself. Otherwise, I agree with you and all your thoughts.

I don’t want to simply reword everything you said about Buck and Tommy. I will also add that Buck likely believes he owes Tommy their relationship since he’s his first gay relationship. Buck has once remained in a relationship under obligation (Taylor Kelly after they said “I love you”). And he has never made the same mistake twice in his relationships.

And hmm who has been their for each of them when they are at their lowest? Let’s look at some examples:

Eddie being the one to drag buck out of bed when he was depressed after the bombing and pulmonary embolism

Then he shows up for him again and reassures him when Buck was dealing with the guilt he felt in the aftermath of the tsunami

Buck being the one to breakdown the door and help Eddie deal with his mental breakdown

Eddie being Buck’s safe place to go after everyone showed up at his loft to check in after the lightening

The lawsuit era and Eddie’s fighting and how they both just spiralled further because they weren’t able to be there for eachother

Eddie being the one buck went and talked to after that cursed dinner with his parents

Eddie being there for buck (hospital jail scene) when maddie was kidnapped by Doug

Eddie being there to rationalise and talk to buck after chimney punched him and left and maddie left before that

Buck admitting to Eddie in the graveyard scene that he is very much not okay and just feels the need to pretend to be the same old buck

I’m pretty sure this isn’t even all of them but yeah I feel like it’s so weird for them to keep including lines about love being so interlinked with this concept of being there for someone at their lowest and then consistently showing us that when buck and Eddie are at their lowest they are each others person to turn to

Like oh my god I actually sob like they trust eachother with the most fragile, the most painful, the most dark parts of themselves and are so vulnerable with eachother time and time again

Also people forget that the blessing and curse of a slowburn that has lasted this long with such an active fandom is that there is so much fanfic, people have envisioned just about every possible scenario where they could get together. So many options have been explored. And so naturally - you’re not going to please everyone. There’s always going to be somewhere where that loves the ship but they went canon with the one trope they hate - we have to get over that. Like I don’t enjoy reading fics where one of them realizes they’re queer but doesn’t realize they’re in love with the other and dates someone else first. I don’t care for that trope and I’m watching it play out on the show and as long as we get to Buddie canon I will be happy. The only things that would truly upset me is if they write them horrifically out of character - which is to say repeatedly hurting or treating each other awfully.

I agree. We have to put a lot of our expectations for Buddie on the back burner and really just be ready to support the show finally willing to go there with Buddie. Because another thing I think people don’t seem to get is it will be a big risk for the show. Having two main popular characters come out and get together in a relatively short period of time. It shouldn’t be but unfortunately that’s the world we live in. Buck and Eddie finally getting to be together and fully express their feelings for one another is going to be a huge deal and I can’t wait to celebrate that no matter how it happens.
