Battlestar Galactica (BS-75)
Today’s spacecraft is the Jupiter-class Battlestar Galactica (BS-75) from the 2003 Battlestar Galactica reboot continuity!
Meta info: Galactica was designed by artists Eric Chu and Chris Bell, and was intended to look sleeker, while still honoring the 1978 design.
Tumblr media
Galactica went through many design variations before landing on the iconic design we know today. Not all of the scrapped designs were wasted though, as one went on to become the Mercury-class Battlestar Pegasus (BS-62), and some were repurposed by the team behind BSG Deadlock. We also see some of the scrapped designs appear at the Scorpia shipyards in the film ‘Razor’.
Tumblr media
Canonical info: Galactica was the first of the original order of 12 Jupiter-class Battlestars. One Battlestar was to be assigned to each of the 12 Colonies of Kobol, with Galactica assigned to Caprica. Galactica served in the First Cylon War under the command of Commander Silas Nash. She took part in the infamous ‘Ghost Fleet Offensive’ in the late years of the war.
Tumblr media
After an armistice was signed with the Cylons, Galactica resumed normal duties as a power-projection platform, patrolling the Colonies' borders with Cylon controlled space. In the time leading up to her decommissioning, her experienced crew was transferred to more modern ships. Command of Galactica was transferred to Cylon War veteran Commander William ‘Husker’ Adama, and the ship was to be converted into a war museum sponsored by the Ministry of Education.
Tumblr media
However, this would never come to fruition, as shortly before Galactica's decommissioning ceremony, the Cylons launched several surprise attacks on the colonies, destroying nearly the entire Colonial fleet in the first hour, and causing the deaths of almost 60,000,000,000 people.
Galactica, along with a number of civilian vessels, fled the Colonies after it was determined that resistance was hopeless. At first, they intended to organize a counterattack, but instead resolved to search for a new home on the long-lost colony of Earth.
Tumblr media
Technical Specs:
Dimensions: 1438.64x536.84x183.82 meters Crew compliment: ~2700 Armament: 24 Dual KEWs, 514 dual PDCs, 12 VLS Missile tubes Compliment: Viper Mk-II space superiority fighters, Raptor recon craft Propulsion system: Liquid fuel thrusters (Refined Tylium propellant)
FTL method: Teleportation
Additional notes: Galactica, like many ships of her time, is not equipped with a networked computer system. This is to prevent Cylon hacking attacks, which proved highly effective against colonial vessels.
Tumblr media
D's thoughts: Galactica is an absolutely beautiful ship. She's the perfect beat-up reliable hero ship, and becomes a character unto herself over the four seasons of the series. I can't really say more without spoiling the show, so I won't. Go watch Battlestar Galactica. It's well worth your time. It’s an incredible sci-fi story from the mind of one of the best writers in the genre.

I am once again seeking Opinions
The event is opening in July, and I’m going to finalize the rules and start more actively promoting it sometime in the next month or so. Exciting!
But the event should have, like, an Icon at least. Maybe a banner. So, using my brilliant MSPaint skills, I’ve put together a couple of options for an icon to use on the tumblr/discord--any feedback would be appreciated!
The poll is first, the actual images are behind a cut/readmore to spare your dashes. They're all based off of this logo:
Tumblr media
I can change things like the text color/etc., but these are the general idea. I wanted to do it looping around like in the actual logo (replacing where it says 'Battlestar Galactica'/'BSG 75') but that is. Beyond my abilities, lol

Can't decide if I'm done or I wanna push the shadows a bit more.... thoughs?
Gouache and water color pencil to the rescue. Resisting the urge to ink it, because ink fixes everything and I need to broaden my horizons. Or something.

Laura Roslin at the Tomb of Athena; mixed media on paper This was supposed to be a quick sketch to use as the base of an experimental technique. I’m bad at sticking with plans, though, so it became... Well, this... Photo didn’t come out great; may try some post-processing or re-take it at some point with better lighting or a proper camera.

I've never been good at anime/Manga style stuff, but my nieces are currently obsessed with the new Sailor Moon series, so here's a nostalgia piece in progress.

Gouache on paper. Still hate jelly gouache, but chose Neptune because one of the weird pastels was perfect for her hair. Not sure if it's more of a character study or a style study.
I think I like this one best:

Not sure if it's done or not... I kinda feel like Bill came out looking a bit like Johnny Cash...
As always, I feel like the shadows aren't dark enough. We'll see. Thoughts?

Fic writer meme
Nicked from @alienfuckeronmain
1) How many works do you have on AO3? 83 as of touched by the feasting tendrils of the night, my first mainline oxventure fic (which no one but me cares about)
2) What's your total AO3 word count?
372k (as of 10th August 2021)
3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
27 though there's a couple of multitags in there. 22 without.
4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
look what you made me do - So I'm good at writing fast and being new to fandoms. This paid off for me. I wrote this very quickly and it includes a lot of taylor swift references, including some very oblique ones that I'm pretty proud of. Also its got a great sex scene and some good OCs and the phrase goatus interruptus.
feel you from the inside - my first viral fic! AKA when do you guys do rec? Turns out Stormtroopers have orgies like workouts and superstitions about wanking and Poor Poe Dameron. Never saw it coming. Jas Queen - the sequel to lwymmd. There's so much in this story that I really love, I think the sex scene is one of my best, its symbolic, its funny, it has songs and puppetry and crossdressing! Catch me when I'm falling for you. - again, early to the fandom, reaps the reward. The perfect girlfriend is better, but this was me on a post-ghostbusters high writing science girlfriends
vestis virum facit - this is a reverse striptease/clothing porn/cockblocking geralt for fun and kudoes fic.
5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Probably 99% of them. Only really don't answer ones that are "thanks for sharing" on very old stories.
6) What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
Lolololol consent to be wrecked. I genuinely thought I'd write a sequel after the last Jedi came out so I purposely didn't give them a happy ending. Absolute lols. I also thought I'd be a bnf off the back of it. the amount of humble pie I ate in the aftermath of that story would give me diabetes if it was real. I needed it though, the experience.
However, if there is love at the end of everything is a twilight zone style story, it has the most "bad ending" of all my fics.
7) What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
The schmoopiest ending is definitely the rose of terok nor, I kind of almost hate it but it is the point that they have a romance novel ending. Honourable mention to go let the stars watch let them stare...the happy ending is a single line but fuck did I work so hard for it.
8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you've written?
I've written and published two crossovers but I don't think either are crazy really. I wrote never noticed the rain, an X men/Hannibal fusion, and a dS/bsg fusion/crossover called the poets let a generation down that I think everyone in latter-day dS fandom has to write. I wrote a lot of weird ones in my nsfw Fridays days, and I wrote two raffles/star wars crossovers interesting basically just me and one other person. Oh and I have an outline for a Hitman/Bloodborne fic I will never write even though I really, really want to.
9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?
I was the target of dsanon like everyone in latter day ds fandom, and once a peer in swtfa fandom said that one of my stories was rapey (it was not ctbw) and I'm STILL furious about it. Also back in my ff.net trigun days someone said I was "waisting my talent" and I was sad for ages.
10) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
lolololol. I used to exclusively write slash smut, then I moved to femslash smut, now I write 75% het smut. honestly I wonder what happened to me.
11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
12) Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Mostly femslash stories into Chinese, Russian and Thai.
13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. I don't even have a beta. I've discussed it a couple of times but honestly it feels too much like work.
14) What's your all time favourite ship?
Raffles and Bunny, probably. Obviously 47 and Diana are my current otp, (we will always have Mendoza and the launch trailer even if we don't have the lust dlc) and I have other fandoms and I'll always love most of the pairings I've written (sit down johnlock). That said, I think only Raffles and Bunny still give me the fluttery feeling in my chest with how hard I ship them, 12 years since I first read the first pages of the ides of march and lost my mind.
15) What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
Pioneer au. The last Jedi killed off everything good about star wars, but this was going to be SO iddy and SO brilliant and I'm still SO keen to write it. I might file the serial numbers off it and make it an original story...but its such a star wars story, its such a classic fic, I think it'd just feel like a fic with the names changed. plus, the twist won't work...god fucking damn it Kyle Ron. I'll never get over the loss of that fandom.
16) What are your writing strengths?
Character studies, smut, character studies through smut. Cadence and rhythm of prose. Dumb sex farces.
17) What are your writing weaknesses? Dialogue, pacing, plot, OCs. They're improving though.
18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?   I think there's only one fic where there's another language that's a plot point, which is in blow a kiss fire a gun, which no one has ever told me was wrong, unlike every single time I try and use Latin for fic titles. I once got Latin so wrong I got so immediately called out for it I ended up using the translation in the gibberish of chapter three of consent to be wrecked.
19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?  Trigun. Well, technically the X files, but I never posted it. Trigun was my first fandom, I was 13, I wrote smut. It is still floating around on the internet and I'm not linking it. You're welcome.
20) What's your favourite fic you've written?
I have a list on my ao3 profile of my faves but it needs updating, but number one probably has to be even steak don't cry. Second place is the rose of terok nor...2019 was a good year for my fic writing. Shout out also to the currently unpublished final part of watch me (its coming!) which I have reread and redrafted so many times and love so much.
I'd love to read other people's, so if you want to, give it a gooooo.

A BSG Rewrite
Okay, so when I was a kid, I watched the 1978 Battlestar Galactica and enjoyed the ships and explosions (I was a Star Wars kid, what do you expect). Then the reimagined series came out and I love the ships and the series, waiting in an anticipation for each season (being in Australia was hard). So it was enjoyable, even the bad episodes of Season 2 and 3, but Season 4, aside from the opening battle with the loss of the Pyxis and damage done to Zephyr, was just terrible. When the rest of the first episode focused on Starbuck’s weird return (which I still don’t get after several re-watches) and what it meant while Baltar was off to get a harem of women who worshiped the ground he walked on (urgh). We got no one figuring out why the fleet lost power or even how the 40-odd ships left in the fleet were disabled in one go while also dealing with the fact they lost another ship and other vessels were hit and damaged with 1,700+ lives lost. That’s when I knew the soul was lost. I remember them spending several parts of Season 1 caring about the Olympic Carrier after it was blown up in Episode 1, not to mention holding on to the lives lost. Yeah, Season 4 and The Plan was a disappointment for me and BSG went out with a gasp (similar to Game of Thrones actually).
But anyway, before the series even ended, I’ve had an idea for a series of my own. And kept the notes - mostly fleet ships and even pilot names - for the past 15+ years. And occasionally I have written my own episodes up to Season 4 (mostly rewrites of those episodes with my characters but with different outcomes). But I never went that far and then got annoyed and deleted it.
But my brain refused to forget it. And what’s worse, it wanted me to go beyond Season 4. Frak, I have gone as high as seven seasons! The original BSG had potential like Star Trek and imagine the places RDM would’ve gone with his.
So I have written up to Season 5 in this latest version, including shorts set between Season 2 and 3, a special between Season 3 and 4 but happens in late-Season 2, shorts about the Twelve Colonies from approximately 12,000 years before the Fall to about 5 years before the Fall and a special set during the attacks and the first seven months after the attacks following a third battlestar and the expected merge will happen in Season 6.
But a few things to say about it. It isn’t really human vs. robots. The robots are there, but they serve another sect of humans. Essentially its humans vs. humans, but it’s more complicated then that. And there is the religious element (sue me) but it plays out differently. As one of my characters say: “Colonial, Aor [the enemy humans], we’re all just pawns in a higher being’s game.” The real bad guys is the dark entities who manipulate my Baltar equivalent (so not a sometimes nice Number Six but rather someone who looks like an angel but is really a demon).
Another thing. I actually keep track of what ships are in my fleet and who every pilot on Galactica and then the second battlestar (not named Pegasus). This saves alot of problems. Original BSG was vague, telling us there were 220-odd ships while really only showing maybe 40 ships. Reimagined BSG seemed to change the numbers on a whim. Miniseries indicated over 50 ships escaped from Ragnar with Galactica, 33 indicated at least 63 ships and Galactica (total: 64), then Season 2 came along -- Tigh says 24 ships were almost a third of the fleet (then next episode said 18,000 people is over a third of the people in the fleet), the nameboard during the election episodes (and adding those mentioned in past episodes) gives you around 75 ships. But counting several ship you see (minus Six Degrees of Separation, cause that is a nightmare, and Flight of the Phoenix’s deleted scene cause it isn’t finished), I got 81 ships at least. Didn’t help every season wanted to add a new ship design (heck The Passage gave us two Defender-type ships when every episode prior indicated you have one, the poor Adriatic). The nightmare that was fleet shots and dialogue, never should the two meet it seems. But no, I did away with it. There were 64 ships at the start, we lose ships, we gain ships, but consistency to me is very important. Same with pilot names and callsigns. The burden of coming up with names and even callsigns was fun.
Anyway, that’s all I’m going to say. I blame my brain. But I always encourage the official release of anything. Just a fan.

I was tagged by @aviss
Name ten favorite characters from ten different things (books, tv, film, etc.), then tag ten people.
1. Brienne of Tarth (ASOIAF series, Game of Thrones)  - Brienne is Brienne in many ways across both of these media, but she’s also very different in some interesting ways primarily related to her age and her innocence. But in whatever form I see her, she’s my all-time fave: honorable, brave, doing good in a world that doesn’t encourage it. A role model AND my precious baby.
2. Ray Vecchio (due South)  - Vecchio is the one character in all of media I would actually marry, except he’s in love with Fraser so I wish them well. Hee.
3. Kermit the Frog (The Muppets) - The character I most identify with, which probably says too much about me already.
4. Hazel (Watership Down) - I just really love well-meaning characters put into positions of difficult leadership who are always trying to make the Good choice in a hard world.
The top 4 were easy, definitely my ride-or-die characters in media. The rest of these I had to really ponder, and some of the answers surprised even me.
5. Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - This is the first of two characters on this list I didn’t expect, because if you’d asked me back when I was really into Buffy I would have picked Spike. But with time and wisdom and a better understanding of the world, I am All About Buffy.
6. Lee Adama (BSG) - I am annoyed about a lot of things they did in BSG, but early seasons Lee was very much my jam so he gets on the list.
7. Ellis Carver (The Wire) - Ellis’ growth in the show earns him a place for sure; his path is so difficult but it’s walked with love and genuinely trying to do the best he can, especially in later seasons.
8. Abigail Mills (Sleepy Hollow) - It’s possible at least 25% of my love for Abbie Mills is spite for how they handled her on the show, but the 75% remaining is enough to put her on the list anyway because SHE IS GREAT.
9. John Crichton (Farscape) - This is the other one that changed over time. When I watched the show it was D’Argo, and I still adore that dude, but emotionally my heart belongs to John.
10. Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation) - A force to be reckoned with. I like to think Brienne of Tarth is her favorite character, too.
Not tagging anyone since I’m on the tail end, but if you want to do it, say that I tagged you and go for it!
