No 5. WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING? On the Run | Failed Escape | Rescue

"C'mon," Will grit out, panting as he readjusted his friend's arm over his shoulders again. "Keeping helping me. C'mon."

Gilan was trying; however, there was only so much one could do when he had a large gash through the back of his thigh, rendering the leg practically useless. Factoring in the blood loss... Gilan was in no state to help anyone, and Will knew it.

Without warning, Gilan buckled. He'd have pulled both of them to the ground had it not been for Will's agility and reaction time. Will ended up on one knee, bracing a hand against Gilan's chest to keep him semi upright. "Gilan. Gil, hey. You're alright. C'mon- up-"

"Will," Gilan gasped out. "This isn't working."

The younger Ranger ignored the words, instead taking the time to check the rough field bandage he had thrown on Gilan's injury in a feeble attempt to stem the blood flow. The fabric was soaked through and skewed, and Will bit out a curse. Absently patting Gilan's chest a few times, Will then propped his friend against his shoulder and prepared to readjust the slipped bandage, because Gilan couldn't afford to lose anymore blood to the forest floor-

"Will, you've gotta go."

"Yeah, we're going, just give me a moment to fix this," Will replied distractedly. Gilan hissed in pain as the bandage pulled tight, reaching fingers out to insistently grab Will's sleeve. Their weak grip made Will pause and turn to meet Gilan's bloodless face. "What?"

"You have to go."

Will simply stared for a moment before his face twisted. "Don't be stupid," he snapped. "I'm not leaving you, so just stop."

Wearily wiping the cold sweat from his forehead, Gilan doggedly shook his head. "They're going to catch up, and... I can't keep going."

"Yes, you can!"

Gilan gave a faint, sad smile. "No," he answered gently, sounding immensely tired. "I can't."

"Then let them come," Will snarled, drawing his saxe. Gilan's face scrunched in distress.

"No! Just get out of here! Think about Halt - you don't want to that to him, do you?" The older Ranger hissed, locking eyes with Will. For all the pain they were in, they were also alight with defiance.

Will scoffed and pulled the bandage tighter, making Gilan groan. "Don't be stupid. Halt has two apprentices, idiot. Neither of us are dying here, alright? Now, c'mon, time to back get up."

"You didn't see him after you were taken to Skandia," Gilan wheezed, breath hitching as Will yanked him back up. "You didn't see him in Arrida. He lives for you, Will. Please, just go. Better me than you."

Gilan sounded so resigned, so sincere, that for a moment Will just gaped at him. "... Why would you even say that?" he said finally said, tone heated and face horrified.

Gilan was spared from answering by the sound of rough trampling through the underbrush. Both Rangers automatically turned toward the sound, and a long moment later, Horace burst into view.

"There you two are! We couldn't find you, and the blood trail, and we had to take care of the others, and Halt is finishing up with them, and..." The knight gasped for air, eyes frantically roving up and down his two friends, at Will supporting an ashen Gilan. "Gilan. Will, what do we need?"

"Yeah, the horses are nearby, Horace, right?" Will said tightly, and Horace nodded as he moved forward to take Gilan's weight. "Good. I'm going to get them. Horace, stay here and get more compression on the wound. I'll be back soon."

If Horace noticed the tension or the way that Will refused to look at Gilan, instead passing the latter over to Horace and immediately stalking off into the trees, he didn't comment on it. Instead, the warrior pulled out his own handkerchief, and with a quick apology to a quiet Gilan, pulled it tight.

Gilan gave a pained yelp, and it was almost a mercy when he finally passed out into Horace's shoulder.

"You need to stop putting holes in yourself," Halt said, briefly resting a hand on his former apprentice's hair before retreating and settling into one of the chairs. They had tracked down a healer in a small, nearby village, and Gilan shrugged from the cot where he sat propped, the gash underside his thigh looking far more manageable now that it was carefully and neatly wrapped in crisp white bandages. He'd been lucky. "Any deeper," the healer had said in wonder and relief, "And you'd be looking at a limp for the rest of your life. As is it, you should be all right, so long as you let it heal properly."

"You're telling me," the tall Ranger said lightly in response to Halt's complaint, though there was an undercurrent of strain in his tone. Halt flicked his eyes to Will, who sat slumped in his chair with his feet propped on the small table, twirling his throwing knife between his fingers. The tension in the room was practically tangible.

Halt raised his eyebrow. "Is everything all right?"

An awkward silence followed, before Will suddenly slammed his knife flat down on the table. "No, everything's not all right. This one-" he gestured roughly to Gilan, "Tried to make me leave him today because of some stupid notion that his life is worth less than mine. He even went as far as to suggest that only my death would be upsetting to you, Halt - that he would hardly factor in at all in comparison. And as much as I would like to blame it on delirium from blood loss, I need an explanation, for my own sake, at least."

Heaving a breath, Will leaned back again and crossed his arms, eyes trained heavily on Gilan as he waited. Gilan's face had gone practically grey during Will's rant, and he opened his mouth wordlessly for a moment before closing it again, looking very much like a cornered animal under Will and Halt's stares.

It was Halt who broke the silence. "Gilan, is this true?" he asked, his expression and tone carefully blank. Halt knew Gilan would never flat out lie to him, and felt himself sink as his first apprentice withered under the question.

"It's not like that," Gilan answered finally, face hot and throat tight because it wasn't like that and he hated being on the spot like this. Halt and Will had a special relationship, everyone knew that. Gilan knew that. Will had experienced his first taste of family only when Halt had taken him as an apprentice - Halt, the first person who had truly wanted Will for being Will. And with Halt, came the Rangers, a tight knit group that was practically a family in itself... and more specifically, with Halt came Gilan, practically a built in older brother, due to Gilan's former position as Halt's apprentice. Gilan loved Will. Gilan had a family of his own and a plethora of father figures. Gilan and Halt's relationship was different - Gilan simply hadn't needed the older Ranger the way that Will did, a fact that Gilan understood and respected.

However, as much as Gilan understood that, and as much as he convinced himself that being the second favorite didn't hurt... sometimes it did.

"It's not like that," he repeated, then fluttered a hand towards the youngest Ranger. "Will is... Will. You two need each other." You wouldn't need me, hung unspoken in the air.

Halt didn't answer for a long moment, absorbing the words. "When I apprenticed you both," he said finally, "I took an oath to protect you. This oath still stands. I don't mean it lightly when I say that I would die for either of you in an instant." Halt nodded to Gilan. "I need you to understand how important you are to me."

Gilan nodded slowly, his eyes shiny. Halt leaned forward to tightly embrace the younger man. Gilan responded in kind, clinging to his mentor like a small child. Halt whispered something in his ear, and when they pulled away, Gilan was smiling.

Will leaned in for his turn, all anger -no, fear- gone from his being. "Self-sacrificial is a bad look on you," the youngest Ranger said as he firmly hugged his friend, and Gilan gave a wet laugh.

From the doorway, his arms full of food, Horace smiled. He wasn't entirely sure what had happened, but he'd resigned himself a long time ago to the fact that he would always be a half-step behind these Rangers.

The warrior cleared his throat. "I have food. Anyone interested in a cup of coffee?"

A resounding chorus of "Always" answered, and Horace knew everything was fine.

Crackdown Ch. 2

Chapter 2: Little Wooden Soldiers

Summary: The heroes go to arrest three of Dark’s closest enforcers, and things seem to be going unusually smoothly.

A/N: Illinois, Bim, and Yan’s scenes are happening at the same time.

Twenty minutes before Dark’s standoff with the heroes, Eric and Illinois were running around what should have been an abandoned warehouse but was full of a local gang that was being mind controlled by some cursed cat totem, it was also summoning stone creatures that ranged from human-like to amorphous amalgamations of rocks.

They ran around the warehouse like maniacs, Eric screaming and exploding rock statues into dust and rubble, and Illinois was close by taking care of the actual humans.

With the totem contained and its former human puppets unconscious the two quickly made out and left, Illinois calling the cops so that the gang would be arrested. This made sure the neighborhood was safe from them and Dark had one less rival group to deal with. Eric quickly changed out of his costume so they could walk hand-and-hand to a diner they liked to go to.

“So it do-doesn’t summon cat-s?” Eric frowned as Illinois slid the totem into a little pocket Void space in his hat. They were crossing a park to save on time, only a couple people still in the park.

“Nah,” Illinois put his hat back on his head and took Eric’s hand again. “Be cool if it could, be funny to watch probably. I know Kay would like something like that.”

Eric giggled as they walked out onto the street, “Tonight’s been a lot of fun.”

“Always the plan, dulcito,” Illinois winked, clicking his tongue and tipping his hat.

“So wh-ere are we go-ing?” Eric asked, smiling.

“You know,” Illinois smiled widely at him, nudging him a little as they stopped just shy of the sidewalk. “We go to Shannon’s and then, I don’t know, it depends on if you’ve got patrol early tomorrow.”

Eric blushed, looking away shyly, smiling.

“Nah,” Marvin cut in, snapping his fingers and a large magic circle that took up almost half the park. He jumped down from a tree as both Eric and Illinois’s feet became magically locked in place.

“Yer grounded,” Marvin told Eric, pointing to him as Marvin summoned giant playing cards that were glowing in a way Illinois did not like. “An’ adventure boy here is goin’ ta jail where he belongs.

“D-on’t h-h-urt him,” Eric choked out, pulling his away from Illinois’s hand, his hands erupting into dozens of explosions on his fingers and palms.

Abe stepped over, he’d been hiding behind a tree and had a TASER in his hands, Jackie zipping in to stand next to him and Marvin. “Come on, kid, this guy’s one of Dark’s most loyal enforcers, he’s bad news.”

“I’m fu-cking tw-enty,” Eric was starting to get frustrated.

“Dulcito,” Illinois called out, and Eric looked back at him. “It’s okay, I won’t even stay the night.”

“They ca-can’t just ta-ke you,” Eric reminded, his voice choppy with agitation and frustration. “Wh-What-ever ha-ppened, you were with—”

Illinois leaned in and Eric met him with a kiss. “We’ll have to take a rain check on that dinner date, sweetheart, but I should be out in an hour or two, even if the Old Man does post bail.”

Eric was escorted away from Illinois, the young hero looking upset and betrayed at Jackie as Marvin disabled the circle and Abe immediately started reading Illinois his rights and cuffing him, but he made sure his wrists were in front of him where everyone could see them. “Illinois Jones, you are under arrest for conspiracy, murder, and theft.”

As Abe started reading his rights, Illinois looked over at Eric and tried to give him a reassuring smile. A car drove up and Illinois let himself be put in the back with Marvin who looked braced to summon up something to further restrain him.

As they drove away, Illinois noticed that Eric was safely away from you. Illinois glared at Marvin as the magician plucked his hat off his head. “If you destroy that it doesn’t get rid of the magic.”

“Yeh should have called Dark when yeh had the chance,” Marvin reminded, the mage knew there was a little bronze that summoned Dark to Illinois’s location but he couldn’t see it. “Why not?”

“Pardon me for being a good boyfriend and not wanting to get him hurt,” Illinois shot back.

“I think yer scared ‘a Dark,” Marvin accused, a smug smile on his face.

“Unlike almost everyone in this town, I’m not afraid of Dark, I’m just not interested in playing meet the parents yet. Unless someone can bring Derek back from the dead so I can properly acquaint him with the heel of my shoe.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Marvin dismissed in disbelief, the Irishman’s attention turning to his communicator. “Package secure, how’s everyone else?”

“Dorm 5 Killer under arrest,” Amy answered.

“We’ve got our end over here,” Bob answered.

“We’re done,” Bing spoke up, “heading back to the station now.”

“We’ve got Dark but who knows how long he’ll stay distracted,” Chase said over Marvin’s communicator.

Inside the infamous radio station that still ran Wilford’s program, despite all the stabbing and shooting he’d inflicted upon his various “guests”.

Bim was wrapping up shooting for his show and was excited to watch his dad work. The young show host had descended from the stage to find Wilford in a disagreement in the green room.

The argument was winding down by the time Bim walked in. But the event meant that Wil was already a little worked up and everyone already knew someone was going to wind up dead, and Bim was already starting to get the starting itches of a craving and if someone died, Bim might not need to hunt someone down. It wouldn’t even be the first time Bim had picked from one of his father’s mad kills, even if it took some of the fun out of the hunt.

“What happened?” Bim asked Wil, following him back towards the stage where they were setting up for Wilford’s show.

“They switched out one of my segments and only now just told me,” Wil grumbled angrily, his strides angry and purposeful. Then the madman saw the reason for his ire, a man who was in a tan trench coat with bandages over his eyes. He was talking with the show runner while he sat on set.

Wilford stomped over and Bim was braced for the gun to come out and blood to spatter the set, but as Wil started talking to the new interviewee Wilford seemed to be visibly calming down and eventually went to sit down.

Surprised and more than a bit disappointed, Bim threw up his arms and started back towards the green room. He’d wait for the gunshot there, Dark and the Producer were the only two who could stop his dad mid-murder.

So he waited and turned on the monitor to watch Wil as the show started. But as he watched his father open the show, he felt something like a heavy, invisible blanket fall over him and he was suddenly alone in the room with four heroes all in the room with him.

“Bim Trimmer,” UFO floated a bit off the ground, Amy’s hair tied back so it couldn’t be grabbed. “You’re under arrest for the murders and disappearances of ten people.”

As she began to read him his rights, Bim felt the room almost constrict around him. Robbie and Ethan were with Amy, Nate sitting in a chair by the door and the instant Ethan had pulled his aura dampening over Bim the singer began strumming slower music more befitting a lullaby. The result of Nate’s powers and Ethan’s dampening, unlike most other heroes, made Bim feel weird. The aura he’d inherited from Dark and Wilford fought being compressed into the ground, and for the first time in Bim’s life it could be visibly seen. It wasn’t the thrashing aura that Dark was infamous for, it clung to his body like a dark grey cloud that was tinged with purple.

“Get off!” Bim growled, his aura attacking Ethan’s like it was a virus, and Ethan reflexively pulled away.

Bim’s hand got halfway to the lapel of his suit coat and the bronze star hidden behind it that Dark had given him over fifteen years ago, scanning the room before his pride got the best of him, and he quickly pulled out his switchblade that Wil had etched with Bim’s name on the handle.

“You all have a death wish or something?” Bim demanded, his aura invisible again with Ethan’s aura dampening was off of him. “Do you even know where you are?”

“Wil’s not coming for you,” Nate reminded, still playing lullabies and classical pieces. “He gets tunnel vision on set, and nothing short of blowing the building will make him save you.”

“I can protect myself!” Bim spat. “I don’t need anyone to save me.”

Hidden by Ethan’s aura, Robbie appeared behind Bim and slammed his balled up fists into the back of Bim’s head and aided with some magical cuffs sewed into his sleeves the spell was strong enough to knock him out.

Bim dropped to the ground and slumped onto the ground. Everyone in the room froze, braced for Dark to show up but after a minute nothing happened.

“That was way too easy,” Ethan warned suspiciously as Robbie carefully picked him up.

“Let’s just get out of here,” Nate decided, subtly trying to hide how he was rubbing his arm. “Before Wil comes to his senses, or Dark finds out.”

Ethan extended his aura around them as they began to take Bim out of the station, Nate taking up the rear and Amy in the front. The whole group froze when a gunshot rang up, the death of the guest Wilford had second on his show.

But when Wilford settled back into his chair like a surly child, the heroes finished taking Bim outside to the same armored car they put Wil into whenever he was arrested. The car keeping his magic contained as he was driven to the police station, Bim starting to slowly come to as he was cuffed and Amy was contacting Chase and the others to let them know their part of the mission was a success.

Unlike the heroes had to do with Dark, Illinois, and Bim the third group didn’t have to worry about leading Yan into a trap. All it took was ambushing her in the street with one of Bob’s almost see through barriers.

Yan was slashing at Bob’s barrier with her katana, screaming in a mix of Japanese, English, and Korean.

“Look, we’re not going to hurt you,” Wade was trying to calm the angry, homicidal young woman from hurting anyone but at this point they might need to just stand here and wait for her to tire herself out. “We’re just taking you to jail with your brothers.”

“Fuck off!” Yan screamed at them.

“Here, let me try,” Patton smiled.

“Sure, knock yourself out,” Wade shrugged, stepping away. “Go nuts, pal.”

Patton moved in and placed his hands on the barrier, “Hey, you’re Yan right?”

She shouted something at him in Japanese that sounded as angry and insulting, as it was rude and loud.

“I’m Captain Morality, nice to meet you again,” Patton smiled, keeping his tone calm and even. “Look, we can’t let you out if you’re going to hurt people.”

“The only one I’ll hurt are you assholes,” Yan spat, but at least she wasn’t screaming which was a good sign. Patton was calming her down.

“So, we’re taking your brothers to the station and we want all of you in the same place,” Patton told her.

Yan was quiet for a bit as Patton kept trying to calm her down, with almost an unsure tone she asked, “Is Artie going to be there?”

Patton looked over at Bob and Wade who shrugged. So Patton leaned in, “Is that one of your brothers?”

“My biggest brother,” Yan smiled sadly. “He went off with my other brother and they never came back. The Old Man said he and my other brother work for the heroes now but I haven’t seen them in years.”

“Well,” Patton hummed, knowing the name Arthur wasn’t on the list but remembering what the Host had told him. “We’re trying to get all of you guys together to ask you a couple questions, so, yeah, he will be there.”

Yan chuckled a bit, “You won’t get Artie, he makes people disappear.”

“Well, we got some people that are hard to make disappear,” Patton promised.

Yan rolled her eyes and laughed at that, in a way reminded Patton strangely of both Dark and Wil, but that made sense to him because she had apparently lived with them for so long.

“So,” Patton smiled, “we’re going to bring you down to the station, and if you’re not going to help us we’re going to have to roll this thing all the way down there, and you might get motion sick.”

The young villain thought on that, clearly weighing her options. Wade and Bob held their breaths.

“Fine,” Yan grumbled, “but only because Artie might be there.”

After that Yan was more than a bit silent after that, just letting them arrest her and take her off in a car, Bob riding with them so he could make sure she didn’t escape and stayed in communicating with Chase and the other team leaders.

“You’ve got some freakishly creepy powers,” Wade told Patton.

“Oh, sorry,” Patton’s smile vanished.

“Nah, you’re not the only one like that, it’s just I rarely get to see it up close cause you live in the Gainesville area,” Wade apologized. “It’s just a good thing you’re one of the good guys.”

“Yeah,” Patton looked away nervously. “My powers are probably why the Host put me with you guys instead of UFO like Silver wanted. Think the others are doing okay?”

“Yeah,” Wade reassured. “I think they’re fine, they would have told us otherwise.”

Patton and Wade followed their group heading back to the police station.

Hand Scratching- Sherlock

I am pretty sure this is my first imagine thing on this blog. I have a couple of one shots I wrote for Freddie Mercury that I put on a co-writing imagine blog before I made this one that I have been thinking of reblogging on here.  

Any way, this is based on something that I have been going through the last two days and it was something I could see Sherlock doing so I decided to write this one. Let me know what you all think and if any of you have a request for an image or a list. 

Sherlock had a number of stims and John had most of them listed in his head. He knew when Sherlock would do one and what it meant. He knew what situations to avoid when he had to drag Sherlock out of a room. The taller man didn’t like being touched by most people but he let John touch him without a single noise of complaint. 

Ruffling his hair, flipping his phone between his forefinger and thumb, clapping, flapping, curling into a ball with or without rocking, snapping his fingers. John knew all of these and even ones he didn’t think Sherlock knew he did. John’s favorite was when Sherlock would hum songs he wrote when he was content walking the streets of London with John. 

However, John’s least favorite was the hand scratching. From what the doctor could tell, the hand scratching was the only that could do his friend any harm. If Sherlock got too stressed or over stimulated he would scratch at the thumb side of his left hand like mad. 

The first time John noticed this action was during Lestrade’s “drugs bust” during The Lady in Pink case. He didn’t know why Sherlock was doing it, or even that Sherlock was on the Spectrum at the time. All he knew was that Sherlock had drawn blood with the nails that seemed far too short to do the job. It wasn’t another two weeks until John pieced together that Sherlock was Autistic and that he was terrified Anderson or Donovan would find his anxiety medication. 

As time went on, John noticed Sherlock scratching his hand more and more. He needed to bandage Sherlock’s hand once when Moriarty was first at large. When John saw Sherlock stat to reach for his hand he’d make eye contact with the detective and shake his head. Then he’d say Sherlock’s name and shake his head. They’d get some funny looks sometimes but John would glare them away and Sherlock never noticed.

“Sherlock are you-” 

“Sherlock,” John shook his head and Sherlock stuffed his hands into the opposite pockets of his coat. Lestrade looked between the men but didn’t say anything. He knew that John was closer to the man than anyone else ever had been. “Go on.” 

Sherlock hummed and nodded where he usually did and made a grimace when Lestrade mentioned that the wife of the victim wanted to talk to the men that had saved her husband. John agreed and Sherlock was a little uneasy with the idea but went with it anyway because John didn’t say anything against it. 

When they got to the woman, she was in happy tears of relief. “You-you saved him. My husband. You’re amazing.” 

Sherlock started to reach for his hand again and John caught his eye again. John paid his respects, nodded, and quickly lead Sherlock away. “Are you alright?” John asked as he and Sherlock walked toward the street. 

“What? Yes, I’m fine.” 

“You keep scratching your hand,” John lifted the hand and showed Sherlock the pink- almost red- area that he kept assaulting with his fingernails.

Sherlock ripped his hand from John’s grip. “I’m fine, John. Just...over…” 

“I get it. We just have to find something else for you to instead of tearing your hand to shreds.” 

“I’ve tried. It doesn’t work.” 

“I’m sure I can find something.”

When John was leaving work at the clinic the next day, he put money in the register for a small hand-brace. It was just elastic and wrapped around the base of the hand so it was the perfect size. Rather than hailing a taxi, he walked to the toy store a block or so down. He was looking around for something that would be just the right size. 

Looking around the stuffed animals, his eyes landed on a little stuffed bee that he knew Sherlock would enjoy. He had a small collection of bee figures that he kept hidden in a shoe box in his closet. John didn’t think that he was supposed to know about it, but he had found it one day after the Fall. Purchasing the palm sized toy, he left the store and hailed a taxi home. 

When John entred the flat, Sherlock was laying on the couch with a novel that John assumed as new mystery. Mycroft had a left a small box of them the other day and Sherlock hadn’t touched one out of spite over...something John didn’t totally understand. Sherlock looked up at the sound of the door but didn’t say anything and turned back to his book. 

“I’ve got a few things for you, Sherlock.” John said. 

“What?” 

“I have something for you. Come here.” John set the kettle to boil. 

Sherlock closed his book and swung his legs over the side of the couch before standing and making his way to the kitchen. 

Catching a glance of Sherlock’s hand, John assumed he hadn’t left the flat all day since the area that had been pink the day before was now as pale as the rest of his hand. “Alright. Firstly, there’s this.” John reached into his pants pocket and handed Sherlock the small bee stuffy. Sherlock took it, barely masking his excitement and it made John smile. “And the other thing is…” John took the boxed brace from his pocket. “This.”  

Sherlock tilted his head to the side slightly upon seeing it. “A compression sleeve?” 

“Yeah. You slip it on over your hand when you feel the need to scratch your hand and it reminds you to play with the bee instead.” 

“Redirection.” Sherlock muttered. “Uh... thank you.” He nodded and hesitantly took the shiny wrist sleeve.

It was a week later that Sherlock gave in and used the sleeve and bee outside of the apartment for the first time. “What’s you got confused, Holmes?” Anderson almost laughed when Sherlock furrowed his brow slightly at Lestrade’s jesting comment that he didn’t understand. Sherlock almost scratched his hand when he remembered the slick compression sleeve in his pocket and slipped it on, squeezing and petting the bee stuffy in his coat pocket. 

“Nothing of great importance. Just wondering when the divorce happened or who it is you’re trying woo.” Sherlock quipped when he noticed the lack of a ring for the Forensic man’s finger. Anderson mumbled something as he wandered off.   

“How’s it working?” John whispered to his taller friend. 

“Better than I expected.” Sherlock took the bee from his pocket and rolled it between his palms. “Thank you.”

Chills

It was quiet.

Tyr finished the dishes, then his hands.  He checked on the dough set aside for the morning’s bread, then left the pantry. He limped down the hall, his steps quiet as he moved to the infirmary.  He walked its wooden floors, the rows between empty beds with their fresh sheets and clean blankets.  He nodded slightly to the medics on duty, stopped by his desk to sort through and restack some papers, then headed out again.

Most of the garrison was already asleep, at least those that would be going to sleep before the current watch ended.  The halls were dim, the lamps and witchlights turned low.  He wandered those halls toward the barracks, slow, silent.  He could hear the Knight-Lord pacing in the command room, footfalls unmistakable.  He paused for a moment, listening, then continued.  His uncle-in-law’s mental state was best left to others, at least unless or until his services were requested or undeniably needed.

Something was weighing on him, something he couldn’t quite shake.  It was the same sort of odd feeling that had weighed on him months ago, the diffuse kind of feeling, formless, without reason.  He’d been trying to shake it for the better part of the day.  He knew that it had nothing to do with Wyn’s decision.  It had started well after that.

It was something, but nothing that he could put his finger on.

The barracks were as quiet as everywhere else—quieter, even.  He padded across the smooth wood of the floor, eyes adjusting to the dim. His wife was already asleep, curled on her side.  He leaned in, kissing her jaw gently, as he started to unlace the cuffs of his shirt. Senithvia stirred slightly, then burrowed deeper into the blankets.  Tyr smiled faintly, brushing her hair back from her face, then started changing for bed.

It was only a few minutes before he stretched out next to her in bed, sliding beneath the covers and settling his arms around her.  His eyes slid closed as he wrapped his arms around his sleeping wife, pressing his face into the hollow where her neck met her shoulder, inhaling deeply.  He relaxed, slowly, and eventually, the warmth and the quiet, familiar sounds of the nighttime garrison lulled him into sleep.

 The wagon bumped and creaked along a familiar ice road.  They were late, thanks to some marauding jormungar and some Scarlets, less the numbers they’d hoped to bring.  The bitter chill of Northrend had settled over them, and they were all quiet as their small caravan moved along, outriders in leather and chain and plate surrounding the wagons crowded with medics and mages and supplies.  This was only one of the Argent Crusade groups headed to Wrathgate, though he couldn’t help but think that none of them could be very big, considering their commitments across the continent as well as back home.  Things still hadn’t entirely settled down just because the latest invasion had been turned back.  There were still dangers to face, things the Argent Crusade guarded against.

And yet, here he was, like so many of the others.

The sound of metal on metal, the jeers and cries and shouts of volunteers and soldiers at war, reached his ears as they crested a rise, echoing over the slopes, already tapering away and fading even as they reached him.  He half rose from his spot, squinting against the wind.

Even as the sound tapered away and he strained to see, bracing himself against one edge of the wagon box and the back of the driver’s bench, he could hear the sound of great doors moving on rusted hinges.  They came over the last rise in time to see the gates finally opening.  Through them, he could see Icecrown—but there, too, stood their quarry.

He emerged in his blue-black armor, glowing eyes visible at this distance.  The words the Lich King spoke could not be heard at this distance, but they could be felt down to the very marrow of bones.

Time compressed.  There was Arthas, speaking his words, there were Saurfang and Fordragon, facing him, confronting the enemy they’d all come to fight, to end once and for all.  New dead began to rise among the armies gathered there, before the armies gathered there.

Then the creaking, the sound of wheels and pullies.

Creak.

Creak.

Creak.

Whssst.

Boom.

Green bloomed and he fell back, stumbling and falling into a crate and a bale of rags for bandages.  He gasped in a pair of breaths, righting himself.  The rest of the contingent stood silent, shocked and still, watching in horror as a sickly green plume rose, that same green spreading like oil on glass over the battlefield before the gates.  It flowed like fog, like a hungry, ravenous thing, clawing, gliding, consuming.

He gagged, pressing his sleeve across his mouth and nose.  At this distance, they should be safe—at least for now.  But down in the field—

There.  A familiar helm.  His throat seized as the figure turned.

As the helm oriented toward him, he knew somehow that the helm’s wearer had met his gaze.

A hand lifted.

The fog was growing close, would swallow him if he didn’t move, and quickly.  Words caught in his throat—he couldn’t shout the warning to his friend, a man he hadn’t met in this time but would someday call his brother.

There was a bright flash, shadow and silver braiding together, a dark shadow striding along the leading edge of the blight cloud, her magic clawing at it even as the blight struggled to consume it, instead recoiling as if burned.

Another figure eclipsed his view of Corey Dawnchild, a woman in the armor of a Warden, though the colors were wrong.  She swept through the spot where he had been standing and after she’d passed, he was gone, leaving only his helm where he’d stood.

He could hear her shout something back toward the shadow striding behind.  The shadow called back, then turned.

A chill shot through him, then calm.

She spoke, and somehow he knew she spoke to him.

The world went black.

 He pitched awake with a quiet gasp, sitting up quickly.  Tyr looked around for a second, gaining his bearings even as Senithvia slowly sat up alongside him.

“Love?” she murmured, her voice thick with sleep but alarmed at the same time.  “What’s the matter?”

Tyr shook his head slowly, reaching for the arm she’d wrapped around him.  “I’m all right,” he whispered.  “Go back to sleep.”

“Was it a nightmare?” she asked, leaning her head against his shoulder.

“No,” Tyr said softly, reaching for a small, leather-bound tome on his nightstand.  “A vision.”
