TLDR: Follow the *exact same* checklist of verifications when opening files *and* websites that was recommended 20+ years ago, only it's even more important now because the phishing wabbits have gotten wascallyer and wascallyer.

New Things to Beware on the Internet

On May 3rd, Google released 8 new top-level domains (TLDs) -- these are new values like .com, .org, .biz, domain names. These new TLDs were made available for public registration via any domain registrar on May 10th.

Usually, this should be a cool info, move on with your life and largely ignore it moment.

Except a couple of these new domain names are common file type extensions: ".zip" and ".mov".

This means typing out a file name could resolve into a link that takes you to one of these new URLs, whether it's in an email, on your tumblr blog post, a tweet, or in file explorer on your desktop.

What was previously plain text could now resolve as link and go to a malicious website where people are expecting to go to a file and therefore download malware without realizing it.

Folk monitoring these new domain registrations are already seeing some clearly malicious actors registering and setting this up. Some are squatting the domain names trying to point out what a bad idea this was. Some already trying to steal your login in credentials and personal info.

This is what we're seeing only 12 days into the domains being available. Only 5 days being publicly available.

What can you do? For now, be very careful where you type in .zip or .mov, watch what website URLs you're on, don't enable automatic downloads, be very careful when visiting any site on these new domains, and do not type in file names without spaces or other interrupters.

I'm seeing security officers for companies talking about wholesale blocking .zip and .mov domains from within the company's internet, and that's probably wise.

Be cautious out there.

Did a pew pew the other day.

The weather wasn't ideal (44 with a breeze), but it was decent enough to spend a few hours doing self-care. I also had some Hot Hands in my hoodie's kangaroo pouch. I did take everything, and shot everything, but shot the Henry the most because that one is soooo much fun. I tried bracing against a tree for the first time, and it took a few tries to find a technique that was comfortable.

My shave of the day was my usual set up but with a new soap, Caisson Shaving Co.'s "BOHICA Blend," which is sandalwood and patchouli scented. It lathers really nice, and has a nice mix of "wood" and "musk," kinda earthy. Of course I had to follow it up with Duke Cannon's cedarwood solid cologne. I also opted for face lotion due to the colder climate.

Bea got out of the shower just as her holo rang. The holoavatar that displayed on her retinal field was a close up of the face from one of those bottles of honey shaped like a bear indicating it was Bea's best friend and maid of honor, Henrietta Martinez. "Dress. Find one. Today." "I know, Jesus Christ. How close are you?" Bea plugged in her sonic diffuser and soundlessly dried her hair. Bea winced as Honey blasted the horn on her Quadra. "Ten minutes. Assuming I don't CRASH INTO THIS FUCKING GONK RIDING A FUCKING BICYCLE ON THE GODDAMN FREEWAY," Honey shouted. "I'm hanging up now," Bea said and did so. She tousled her fluffy curls with her hands as V stepped out of the shower. He wrapped a black towel around his waist, just below his hips and Bea stared at his glistening body. He wasn't ripped — it was all functional muscle — but damn if Hashem didn't bless that motherfucker with genes from Adam himself. "Tuxedo?" She asked. V came up behind her and kissed her bare shoulder. "Tailor today," V said. He kissed her other shoulder before pulling off her towel, snapping it at her bare ass and tossing it in the black hamper by the bathroom door. Bea's eye twitched and her eyes followed him in the mirror as he walked out of the bathroom. V leaned against the railing on the second floor platform suspended above the first floor that was their bedroom. The soft sunbeams from an hour ago were already beating through the broken and battered ozone layer. The surrounding skyscrapers — corporate offices and megabuildings alike — acted as a magnifying glass while all the poor citizens of Night City were ants burning to death. Bea, still naked, walked behind him. She traced her fingers down the two curved columns of scarification that ran from his shoulder blades to his waist. Goosebumps flitted across his skin as her fingertips traversed the bumpy rows of thickened flesh. "Why did you get these done?" "Hmm?" V was miles away thinking about nothing and everything all at once. Being the sole occupant in his head 90% of the time- <Give me more credit. I'm here at least 30% of the time.> V forgot what it was like to have a running monologue when it used to be a two-person conversation. He got lost in his own head more than he used to. It annoyed him, realizing how much Johnny changed fundamental aspects of his daily life.
