Hey watch The Wild Robot if you can

It's Dreamworks and the trailer didn't lie. It's wild like the cast are only animals and a robot and they used all the badass leftover Httyd2 concept art but this time for real. It has a Mother and a Fox and a Duck. It has Chris Sanders and I am going to say that this movie really goes to show that Sanders was the true heart of Httyd, not Deblois. But guess what, it has Dean Deblois too. It has Pedro Pascal and Mark Hamill, for some reason?????? It has butterflies and a lot of actual death and a cozy fireplace in the middle of winter. It has Dane Stogner (animation on Httyd + Httyd2) and Nico Marlet (character design for the Httyd franchise + Abominable). It gathers animals of all kinds around to learn how to help each other and that everyone is valid and has something to give, no matter how unique or "wrong" they are in this place and in their society. It's found family done right.

It reminds me of a certain children's book that I used to read, which is about wild animals spending a single night helping one another and playing peaceful in a cold, merciless snow storm. Come morning, each of them goes back to their lives as if they'd never known each other, and they would also go back to eating and killing each other. But for one, blessed night - there is peace.

This is that kind of movie.

Criticism includes the fact that the music is good but man it isn't by John Powell and, well... I'm not going to gloss over the fact that "found family" can be a terribly lonely existence if one remains the only representative of one's entire species. The film touches upon the feelings of disorientation and lack of purpose and the ostracism. The solution it offers is, of course, understanding and valueing everyone's individual gifts, but... I have to say that what may be incredibly uplifting to some can send a rather disheartening message to others. Sometimes you don't want to be needed to save the world with the single hyperspecific act that your weirdness was born for,... sometimes you just want to stop being different (because different is more difficult) and belong and rest with your own kind, on the daily, forever. It needs to be ok to find people like yourself and stay there. Especially when you've never had that. Especially when you need some ease and found family means putting so much more work in to make it work. Especially when found family has been all but a choice. The ending does imply that one's own kind can be "enough", but it makes "enough" feel empty. So it's kinda a double-edged sword, this movie.

It's very positively embracing of weirdness. Let's go!

BIOGRAPHY:

Scott and Melissa Wilder were told they couldn't have any children after the birth of their youngest son. Lo and behold, Avery Sage came into the world a few years later. Her mother liked to joke that she learned through a fifty-four hour labor that there was no making her do something she didn't want to do.

Scott's family had lived in Denver for the past four generations, on a sprawling working cattle ranch just outside of town. The family business boasted 637 acres, along with an "equine retreat", though Avery often referred to it as a dude ranch.

While her family had skills with ranching, Avery was a rising star with anything involving a horse. She competed in rodeos and various shows, including show jumping and dressage. She attended camps and was trained under the finest coaches with the hopes of joining the US Equestrian Team. During one of her qualifying shows, a jealous competitor sabotaged her saddle and it caused Avery to crash the jump. What followed was the longest two years of her life.

Doctors told Avery she would likely never walk normally again, but she took it as a challenge. She took the surgeries and the physical therapy in stride in hopes of proving everyone wrong. While she was able to walk, she lost everything she had ever worked for. Art had been a hobby of hers, but during rehab, she threw herself into it. After graduating from rehab, she applied for SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) in Georgia and continued her hard work.

With her parents' blessing, she eventually decided to transfer to École Nationale Supérieure deus Beaux-Arts in Paris and it was there that she met Chris Sanders. While Avery was considered an extremely careful individual, it all went out the window when she met him. Within a few months, they not only traveled together, they ended up getting married. After getting over the initial shock, the Wilder family accepted their new in-law with open arms.

Things have become somewhat strained with Avery and her family since her homecoming to Denver. Instead of her taking over the family dude ranch, she decided to pursue her career as an artist.

Well this was an interesting one. So many questions! I’m really impressed that they have managed to turn this show around as much as they have. I was talking with my mom last week and she couldn’t stop talking about how much she is enjoying s3. We both can’t wait for the next episode because so much goodness happens every week. And I’m so glad that we got to start off this episode with Alex! I’ve missed him! But there is so much more to talk about, so let’s dive right in!

Sorry, Eduardo, Alex isn’t the best person to tell you how to have a conversation with an alien! Bless his heart, he’s been trying for over a decade. But the origins of Deep Sky are so intriguing. I can’t wait to learn more. And those suicide bats were creepy as all get out!

I can’t believe no one figured out Max was Jones sooner. I mean we all have problems with Max being a cop, but he’s so much better at it than Jones. And when has Max ever used phrases like “That’s an excellent question.” Weird no one got it until then.

It was a strong episode for the ladies. Love Liz, Rosa, and Isobel trying to help Maria. And Maria’s mind is an interesting place. Nice to see the Marosa friendship with Rosa giving up her necklace. Now can we get more time with them both conscious? Please?

Back to Max, seriously Liz. He didn’t react to Henry IV! He’s sorry that Genyrex didn’t work out? (did I spell that right? Genorex? Genoryx? I don’t know.) Hiding stuff in the desert? Shady.

Lucky! What a good boi!! I’ve missed him.

Love that when things are impossible to figure out, Michael goes to Alex. Also, suicide bats are so creepy. And does Michael look like a zoologist to you Max/Jones? Of course a hole in the ground is Max’s idea of a hiding place. And if Michael is invincible, couldn’t he touch the sword too? Especially if Jones is the dictator and his father.

Eduardo is like a creepy yoda. He’s all let’s go team, you can do it Alex, just believe in yourself. Then he runs off and does creepy stuff. Like deal with suicide bats.

Interesting that Rosa is developing new powers. Must be why we saw that sneak peek of her and Michael working on her control.

I actually quite enjoyed the Malex conversation. Of course they are still going to have moments when they fall back into conflict. It’s only been 6 days. Change doesn’t happen overnight. They are going to have to feel their way through their feelings for each other. It’s normal. But we still saw that amazing growth. Any other time Michael would have dove into a bottle and gotten into a fight. But he kept going and he even kept Alex in the loop when he figured out why the bats suddenly became suicidal. That shows a lot of progress. Alex still wants to protect Michael. Those two are so gone on each other. They’re gonna figure it out. I just know it.

I do love the friendship with Rosa and Isobel. And I don’t feel any romantic vibes from them which is good. I love that they can lean on each other. And working together to save Maria really shows how much they’ve both grown since Rosa was brought back.

That conversation with Sanders! OMG! He may be blind, but he ain’t stupid! I love how he walked Michael through the problem so he could figure out why the creepy bats were suicidal. (have I mentioned I hate bats?) Also, I knew he was a Malex shipper. Sanders is the best daddy Michael could ever ask for. He’s the one you need to be like Michael.

Boy Jones really can’t pull Max off can he.

Liz and Alex! It’s been 84 years. I love how they help each other by talking about what advice Kyle would give them. I think everyone needs to start wearing bracelets that say WWKD on them. Because Kyle always knows best. Also, smooth getting Liz to give you the blood samples dude.

Shouldn’t have left clues Jones. Liz is gonna figure it out. I mean leaving a visible handprint? Rookie mistake. Somebody’s been in a pod for several decades too long.

I love how Alex bullied that tech into doing his bidding. I feel like he’s going to be in charge of Deep Sky by the end of the season. As he should because he’s a badass boss. I love him. I can’t help myself.

Calling his boo to let him know what he’s found. Michael you show off. And Alex figuring out where the other radio is. My boys are so brilliant. I love them so much. Eduardo needs to give us back Kyle. I mean, these fools are going to all end up dead without Kyle there to protect them. And if you hurt one head on my sweet Alex, Michael will destroy you. Then again, if you shoot Alex, we could finally get a handprint moment.

So the ladies all know about Jones. Pretty sure hell hath no fury like Isobel when someone hurts one of her brothers. And why you gotta pull Lucky into your life of crime, Jones. He’s a GOOD BOI! Alex and Michael need to rescue him and raise him as their own.

So there we are. It was all in all a good episode. I haven’t been disappointed yet this season. I really like the direction Chris and the writers are going. I think they are giving us a really cohesive story that’s going to pay off in the finale. And I still know Malex is happening. It may not be till episode 13, but it’s going to happen. I have faith. Part 12

"Shh." Lady Henrietta Rawlings held her daughter close. "All will be well, darling."

"Oh Mamma." Millie cried. "I cannot lose him. Not after I realized" She trailed off as another sob tore through.

Henrietta smiled softly to herself. It had come as a pleasant surprise to find that her daughter had fallen in love with the one man she and Lord Gabriel Rawlings wished for her.

When Millie burst into tears upon hearing the news that Lord Ryan Summers had been shot, she knew her daughter must truly care for the man. After leaving Lucy in charge of the guests, she took her daughter to her bedroom so that she could cry in privacy.

Her smile dimmed as she remembered that the young marquess might not survive his wound. She couldn't bear the thought of her daughter finding love to only lose it so quickly.

"Stay here." She ordered. "I'll go see what the doctor says."

Millie blew her nose while nodding. "Please find out all you can."

Thomas and Chris decided early on to escape members of the house party. With Amanda in tow, the three claimed one of the empty parlors.

Guests were frantic with gossip and predictions that Lord Summers would die from his injury. Ladies were sniffling in their handkerchiefs, lamenting the loss of a young man of both excellent breeding and fortune. Some of the visiting gentlemen took advantage of the situation to offer comfort to the more desirable matches.

Once Sir Chris shut the door, the three relaxed as best they could under the circumstances.

"How is Lord Ryan?" Amanda asked "Have you heard anything yet?"

"The doctor was able to remove the bullet from his shoulder." Thomas poured a libation for himself and Chris and then a glass of sherry for his lady. "It was a miracle that it missed anything vital."

"That is a blessing." Amanda set her barely touched glass down.

"What I want to know is," Chris bit out, "how the bloody blazes, forgive me, my lady, do a group of seasoned grouse hunters manage to shoot a man?"

Thomas gripped his glass. "Ryan was standing beside me." He took a healthy gulp in the hopes the brandy would burn away the image of his friend bleeding before him. "He then stepped back to ready his rifle."

Amanda covered her mouth. "You would have been shot in the back if he hadn't moved."

He nodded. "Seems odd that after enduring days of tense encounters with the duke that a man next to me is struck down by a stray bullet."

Chis snorted. "Tense barely scratches the surface."

"Has any gentleman stepped forward, claiming they shot Lord Ryan?" Amanda asked, praying it was truly a fluke accident.

"Not that I'm aware of." Thomas quirked an eyebrow in question to Chris.

"I haven't." He answered. "I believe that Lord Gabriel and Michael are going to question everyone."

While Thomas and Chris continued to speculate the shooting incident, Amanda's attention was drawn toward a flurry of activity outside the window.

Carriages were pulling up outside. Some of the houseguests were taking their leave. There were many that hoped to be the first to share the gossip at the many ton events that awaited them in London.

Her eyes darted to the left. Duke Viktor Montmarte stepped forward after giving a farewell to a trio of ladies, tittering at his flirtatious comments.

"I believe we should corner Montmarte's valet." Thomas explained. "I find it strange that he accompanied his grace for the hunt."

Chris softly cursed under his breath. "I didn't notice he was there. What gentleman has a valet that is also well versed in reloading rifles?" He set his glass down in the midst of standing up. "Where is the scoundrel?"

"They've left along with others." Amanda replied. "I do not think we will ever know who truly shot Lord Summers"

"Papa?" Millie whispered outside Ryan's chambers. "Are you certain he is being properly cared for?"

Lord Gabriel's lips trembled with mirth. "Feel free to check on him if you wish. I was planning on sending Sanders in periodically to make certain the marquess is resting comfortably."

"Periodically!" Millie gasped in outrage. "Lord Ryan should have someone at hand until he is strong enough to leave his bed."

Lord Gabriel decided to withhold the information that Lord Ryan had regained consciousness earlier and had no trouble whatsoever with getting up to find a softer shirt to change into.

He had already spoken to Henrietta about letting Millie nurse the gentleman in the hopes the two would finally see that they belonged together.

"My dear," her father said in a condescending tone he knew would spur her on to defying him. "He will be fine on his own for the rest of the evening. We have guests we must entertain and help prepare for their departure on the morrow. You should--"

"Hang the guests!" Millie snapped. "If they are too witless to know how to act when a man lies at death's door, then they deserve no such courtesies!" She opened Ryan's door and slipped inside.

Henrietta popped her head around from around a corner. "You handled that well."

Gabriel chuckled as he walked over to her. "I've learned over the years how to get my ladies to do exactly what I wish."

Hen's eyes narrowed on her husband. "What was that?"

He winked at her as he escaped downstairs. "How else do you think I managed to trick you into bringing up marriage before I did?

"You wretched beast!" Hen screeched.

He laughed as he dashed downstairs.

Her lips eased into a smug smile once he had disappeared. "Foolish man. If he only knew I knew that was his plan all along."

Ryan's eyes flew open when he heard water being poured. He scanned his dim chamber and nearly bolted upright when he saw Millie wetting a rag.

Curious to what she planned to do, he closed his eyes and feigned sleep.

She tiptoed over and gently placed the cool rag on his forehead.

He peeked at her from under his lashes. Her teeth were tugging at her bottom lip as she observed him. There was a crease forming in the middle of her forehead as her eyes narrowed somewhat in thought.

He relaxed when he felt her fingers gently combing through his hair. It was a soothing, almost loving touch that he felt down to his toes.

It took all his willpower to remain still when he heard the click of his door opening again. If anyone were to catch Millie alone in his bedroom, the scandal would rock the entire ton.

Millie's head jerked up at the intrusion. When she saw who it was, she decided to not bother being kind.

"What the devil are you doing here?!"

Victoria paused before shutting the door. "I could ask you the same question."

Ryan flinched from the hiss in the intruder’s tone. Both women noticed the movement and lowered their voices for his sake.

"I am nursing Lord Summers." Millie ground out.

"I believe he would prefer my tender ministrations over yours." Victoria's smile was a touch brittle. "After all, he has made a point to spend more time in my company than anyone else's."

Millie bristled at her not so subtle meaning. "Be that as it may, Lord Ryan is a guest in my home. Therefore his care falls under my responsibility."

Ryan frowned somewhat at that statement. He didn't want her to feel obligated to care for him. He had hoped she was doing so for a deeper, more heartfelt reason. This irritated him even more that he desired such an emotion from the bane of his existence.

"Well, I have a way with men that helps speed their recovery." Victoria countered smugly. "Why don't you go and try to obtain that which you don't have."

The lady made a shooing motion with her hands as she approached the bed.

"And what exactly have I yet to obtain?" Millie's voice had lowered and sounded more sinister than Ryan had ever heard. He cracked open his eyes. Never had he been more grateful to not be the recipient of her temper.

Victoria was oblivious to the effect her provocations had on the young lady.

"Poor little Lady Millicent." She sadly shook her head. "It must be devastating to have your closest friend, who we must admit is not a great beauty, make such an advantageous match in the midst of her first season while you have yet to capture attention from any gentleman within the span of nearly three seasons." Her lips curved into a mocking smile. "Even now the less popular ones are not inclined to give you anything but a cursory glance."

Millie was practically shaking with her anger. "How dare you?!"

Victoria ignored her, moving to fluff Ryan's pillows.

Millie snatched her wrist and roughly pushed her away.

"You wicked little viper." Victoria snapped, wrenching her arm free. "Do you honestly believe he would choose someone like you over someone like me?" She narrowed her eyes on Millie. "You are nothing but an annoyance to him."

Ryan noticed the color drain from Millie's face. Her hesitation touched his heart. In that brief moment, he realized that she believed he wouldn't choose her.

"Millie, are you--," Victoria's laugh echoed in the chamber, "You are! You are in love with Lord Ryan."

The man fully opened his eyes to see how Millie would respond to what had to be a farfetched notion.

Her blush and twisting of the rag in her hands appeared to point toward it being true.

"Oh this is rich." Victoria snorted while laughing again. "You'll never be able to show your face in London again after everyone hears about this." Her malicious smile reappeared. "Not only have you caused a scandal, but you fell in love with a man that barely tolerates his acquaintance with you."

Ryan spoke up when he saw the tears building in Millie's eyes. "Leave my room. Now."

Both ladies jumped and turned to look a him.

Victoria smiled sweetly. "My lord, I've already told her that she is unwanted." She went to pull the covers up over his chest.

Ryan caught her hands. "You are the one that is unwanted, Ms. Fontaine."

She narrowed her eyes. "You must be delirious, sir." She forced another sweet smile. "I'll call for the doctor. A fever might be setting in."

Ryan's polite veneer that he had worn throughout his life was nowhere to be found. Millie watched in a state of disbelief as he set the misguided woman straight.

"Ms. Fontaine, I have unwillingly endured your forced company this entire visit." He began. "If not for my respect of Lady Cora and Lord Michael Rawlings, I would have cut any and every conversation with you." His words were clipped and held an edge sharper than a blade. "My patience has reached its end."

He turned toward Millie. "My dear Lady Millicent, will you please pour me a glass of water?"

She gave a brief nod and hurried to get him what he asked for.

Victoria, upon realizing she was being ignored, decided to leave and spread what gossip she could.

She was in for quite a surprise on learning that Lord and Lady Rawlings had already explained the situation to their remaining guests, making Millie's actions all above board.

"Here." Millie slipped her arm behind Ryan's shoulders.

Instead of admitting he could easily sit up, he decided to play along, struggling with every movement. He weakly grasped her hand that held his cup and took a long, slow sip.

"Thank you." He exaggerated a groan as he sank down against the pillows. "That altercation took a great deal out of me."

Is there anything else I can do for you?" She worried over him.

"What can be done at such a dark moment?" He asked, tinging his voice with sadness. "I have been brought to my lowest." He covered his eyes with his uninjured arm. "How does one go on after this?"

Millie hemmed and gently grasped his hand. "My lord, you will come back from this. I know you have a deep strength that will aid in your recovery."

"My life will never be the same." He said in a gravelly voice. "What will become of me?"

Millie swiped at her stray tears. "Ryan, I--"

"Nothing but a lifetime of pity." He wailed, getting into his role of injured gentleman. "No lady will ever wish to marry me for myself. I will only be desired for my wealth and title."

"That's not true." Millie argued. "You--"

"She won't be able to look at me without seeing a once dashing, handsome man wounded beyond repair." He continued, peeking from under his arm at her.

"Ryan, you're going to be fine." Millie insisted. "You must recover. I need--"

"This is the end of Lord Ryan Summers." He interrupted. "The man you once knew who made ladies' hearts race is no more." He let his arm fall weakly to his side. "I am forever scarred."

Millie narrowed her eyes. "Is that all you care about?"

He turned toward her. "Is what all I care about?"

"Your effect on women." Millie bit out. "One would think a brush with death would cause a man to rethink his life and strive for something more."

"Millie, I-" he began, struggling with his laughter.

"Perhaps Victoria should tend you." Millie stood up and threw the wet rag in his face. "I am not the kind to give you the comfort you so rightly deserve."

"Now Millie," Ryan tossed the rag on the table, "I prefer your tender--" he grunted when she pushed him back down on the bed.

"I cannot believe I worried over you!" She pointed at the bandage at his shoulder. "You're perfectly fine!"

"I was shot in the shoulder." He argued, sitting up once more. "And it hurt like bloody hell removing the bullet."

"Not nearly enough!" She snapped. "You deserve so much more discomfort."

"Millie!" Ryan scrambled off the bed and blocked her exit. "Now Millie, you know you love me."

"I do not!" She screeched. "Whatever," she searched for the appropriate comparison to her previous feelings, "weakness I might have felt, it has thankfully disappeared." She waved her hand. "Kindly move."

"No." He folded his arms, then winced at the pain it caused.

The flash of anger Millie felt disappeared at glimpsing his actual pain. "Oh Ryan." She stepped forward and gently touched his cheek. "You must take it easy."

She slipped her arm around him and guided him back to his bed. She once again fluffed his pillows and covered him up. The entire time, she insisted he allow her to care for him.

Ryan's lips curved at her fussing over him once more. A man, he thought, could get very used to this.

"Did you discover anything?" Amanda asked.

Thomas had pulled her off to an alcove after dinner. He kept her hand in his as they discussed his fruitless search for the shooter.

"Nothing pertinent. The few gentlemen that have remained for another night were all focused on the grouse." He lifted her hand to his lips. "Perhaps it was an accident after all." He grimaced with his next thought. "What if Montmarte's game was simply to cause me doubt and misery? To ruin our time together as a newly engaged couple."

"That is a possibility." She conceded. "Though I believe our original stance to remain guarded around him was wise. He does not strike me as a man that chooses inaction." She smiled softly as he brushed another kiss against her knuckles. "At least he is gone."

Thomas nodded, a hint of a smile forming. "Yes, and we will soon be at Kirkwood Manor." His eyes lifted to hers. "I am anxious to acquaint you with your new home."

"Oh?" Her teasing smile appeared. "Not for the wedding then?"

"That goes without saying." He grumbled. "You are very aware of how much I am looking forward to that."

She laughed, squeezing his hand. "I am looking forward to both."

Thomas hesitated, then leaned closer to whisper. "Even though Montmarte is gone, I would prefer keeping watch over you tonight." Before she could argue, he held up his hand. "I promise to rest during our journey tomorrow."

"Very well." Amanda conceded. "I see that you refuse to be swayed." Her breath hitched when he pressed a lingering kiss to the inside of her wrist. "I will see you later "

Thomas watched her wish her aunt and the Rawlings family goodnight on her way toward the stairs. His lips firmed in a frown as he wondered if they were truly once and for all rid of Viktor Montmarte.

The next morning...

"Are you certain you feel up to leaving this morning?" Millie asked.

Ryan gave his thanks when one of the servants poured him a cup of coffee. "I do." His dimples deepened with his charming smile. "With you caring for me during our journey, I know that I will be fine."

His smile grew at the rosy hue forming on Millie's cheeks.

"Good morning." Amanda greeted when she and Thomas entered the dining room. "Lord Ryan! I am very pleased to see you up and about."

He stood and kissed her hand. "Nothing will stop me from seeing you and Thomas wed." He winked at her. "I have a vested interest in your marriage."

Thomas rolled his eyes. "I believe I was the one to actually court her."

"I'd like to think mine, Lady Millie's, and our closest friends' influence had a hand in nudging you toward the altar.

Chris and Matthew joined them at that moment.

"If I recall correctly," Chris grinned over his shoulder while filling his plate at the sideboard, "Our dear Thomas was very much against the notion of holy matrimony with any lady he came into contact with."

"He even encouraged other men to make a match with a certain lady." Matt added, chuckling at the glare Thomas sent him.

Amanda couldn't help but laugh at their teasing. She reached over and grasped Thomas' hand.

His eyes met hers. Seeing her warm smile, his frown disappeared. He pressed a kiss to her knuckles. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he was grateful they had such interfering friends.

Millie sighed at the tender action, thrilled beyond measure that all was how it should be. Nothing was standing in the way of those she cared for.

A few hours later, Millie was ready to commit a murder before the wedding. With Ryan injured, she had readily agreed to riding in his carriage with him. Lady Lucinda was riding with Millie’s parents so that Amanda and Thomas could enjoy some alone time in his carriage. All seemed to point toward a pleasant journey for everyone.

Then Sir Chris and Lord Matthew insisted on joining her and Ryan.

It might have been pleasant if not for their teasing and hints that Millie and Ryan felt something deeper than mere friendship. Then again, it most likely would have been a miserable ride. The man she thought herself in love with was irritable with every jostle to his shoulder.

“Perhaps you should have waited a few days before traveling.” Millie suggested.

“I am not about to miss a single moment of my closest friend finally settling down with a young woman I actually approve of.” He snapped.

Millie’s eyes narrowed. “Then perhaps I should have chosen to ride with my parents.”

“Heaven forbid you remain with me and help nurse me back to health.” He grumbled between gritted teeth.

“I can think of a few ways to nurse you.” she mumbled under her breath, imagining shoving a rag in his mouth. “Why don’t you try and rest?”

“Capital idea.” Chris interjected when it appeared that Ryan was about to bite their only feminine company’s head off. “Go to sleep, Summers.”

“You all make it sound simple!” He snapped. “And here I am, thinking that the movement of the coach makes this contraption a torture chamber on wheels.”

“If anyone is tortured it is us that are trapped with you.” Millie countered. She folded her arms and purposely turned so that her back was to him.

“You may leave at any time you wish.” Ryan pointed out. “I was a fool to think having you with me would be a comfort.”

Millie’s gasp of outrage caused the other two men in the carriage to shrink back within their seat. 

“I was more than ready to do all I could to ease your journey.” She hissed. “I had no idea though that not only are you stubborn but you are also prone to whining over every little thing.” She huffed and reached for a book to read. “I did not know I had chosen to travel with a petulant child.”

Ryan opened his mouth to deliver a crushing set down to the woman he thought he was losing his heart to. 

“Here we are, sir!” His coachman called out.

Millie peeped out the window at the inn they were stopping at for the evening. She scrambled down the coach steps when she saw her father helping her mother and Lady Lucy from their carriage.

Her eyes scanned the charm of the small town and she noticed that a number of carriages were stopping at the various inns that lined the main road.

Thomas and Amanda paused on their way inside to check on Ryan.

“I pray it wasn’t too difficult on you.” Amanda said once the gentlemen had made it out.

“I managed.” Ryan quickly assured her. 

Chris choked on his laughter. “He is a man to admire in how he suffers in silence.”

Millie was about to add her own cutting observation when she noticed how pale Ryan was. Sweat was glistening on his upper lip and he winced when he straightened his posture.

She stepped forward and took his uninjured arm. “Come, we should get you settled so that you can rest.”

Her sweet tone caught him by surprise. “Thank you.” He murmured, walking with her into the inn. “I do apologize for my rude behavior.” He grimaced at the pain throbbing in his shoulder. “I should have insisted you ride with your parents.” 

“I should have been more understanding.” She gently squeezed his arm. “I need to work on my patience.”

“And charity.” He added, grinning at her quick temper.

She met his gaze and reluctantly smiled. “That too.”

He leaned down to whisper to her. “Perhaps you shouldn’t work too hard. I will look even more churlish if you become too angelic.”

She laughed out loud, causing his smile to to grow. “Very well. I will only partially work on my lack of patience for your sake.”

“Thomas!” Amanda whispered. “What are you doing?!” She carefully opened the window to her room and stepped back so he could climb in.

“I wanted to check on you.” He replied, looking around her room only lit by a candle. “I have gotten into the habit of being unable to relax at night unless I see for myself that you are safe.”

She walked into his arms to kiss him, snuggling closer when he wrapped his arms around her. “What am I to do with you?”

“Marry me.” He suggested, pressing another kiss to her lips. “Then I can rest easy.”

She shut her window and tugged him over to her bed. “Hopefully you will once we reach Kirkwood.” 

He removed his coat and cravat before settling beside her. “Hopefully.” He reached out to hold her, repositioning her until her head lay on his chest. Thomas closed his eyes as peace seemed to seep into his very bones with the feel of her in his arms. Her hushed whisper of her love for him made him even more grateful that she would soon be his for the rest of his life.

Across the street, a man cloaked in shadows kept his eyes on the window that held the young lady and the man she was engaged to. He remained there, long after the candle was snuffed. Once he believed the man was not going to return to his own room, he left his post and reported all he had witnessed to his employer.

“So he is still keeping his nighttime habits, eh?” The duke chuckled while swirling brandy in his glass. He took a sip before returning his attention to his valet. “We will need to rethink our plans for the viscount and his lady.”

They always blame others for what they are really guilty of, this explains the Pizzagate garbage. This could be bigger than we ever dreamed. Even stories that we may have thought a bit out there need to be looked at closer. Can we connect the sex trafficking, the White House, the money? It is time to quit fucking around with the sellers and customers of those exploited in the sex trade. I don’t get it, all these men from Trump to R Kelly have the power over the women they supposedly use and abuse and yet they are always so angry. Perhaps they wouldn’t be losing their power if you treated others with respect and dignity. They always want all the power for themselves. And c’mon media, stop talking your heads off about the Omar story and give this Li Yang story a closer look.

***** The story of the fall of Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes is a sad one. It does show that greed and massive fraud are not just for the men of this world. When I first heard of her plans for the blood testing, I was so impressed with what she was accomplishing at her age. Yes, she was another poor little rich girl whose family fortune was quite diminished by the time it got to her. Even without the Fleischman yeast money, she did seem to have advantages. I can see how some of us were fooled but what about the big investors, the stalwart statesmen?  Do they not remember that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is? I always assumed that by the time I am hearing about it, things are about ready to go. WHY can’t we hold those involved in big money crimes really responsible??

The 2020 Andre Johnson Sweepstakes League write-up

Friends of the Andre Johnson Sweepstakes League, welcome. I am pleased (no really, I am excited) to bring you a breakdown of the AJSL as it blessed our lives in the one-of-a-kind year of 2020. Below you will find a mix of analysis and lighthearted fun aimed at taking a first pass at what the heckfire happened this year from start to finish. We’ve got analysis on the draft, injuries and schedule plus some fun awards to give out. I won’t buffalo you any longer, lets get to it.

Draft Day Analysis

Draft day analysis interpretation: I tried to objectively pick the best teams based on my personal draft rankings (subjective draft rankings, objective draft analysis…sort of follows?). Here’s the methodology: I assigned a value to every player for above average play (in 0.25 increments). It’s essentially five tiers (+0.0 = starter, but could be replaced; +0.25 = contributing starter; +0.5 = solid starter; +0.75 = strong starter that will create a positional advantage; +1.0 = elite starter providing a distinct positional advantage). This all makes sense in my head, and it should make more sense when you look at the table. I then added up points for each team’s best possible starting lineup according to my points system and voila; Dave Stark’s handicapping of the AJSL.

A couple of notes:

·       Players are listed in the positions as there were drafted, with highest spend creating the starting lineup. For my points system, I subbed in bench players if they had a higher value than the starter.

·       I cheated on Christian McCaffrey’s value: he was a +1.25 in my book. Clearly the best player in the game with even higher upside than the traditional studs.

A few things that turned out like I thought

·       The QBs at +0.0 (Baker, Carr, Danny Dimes, Kirk Cousins, and Jimmy G basically ride the merry-go-round from one bye week fill-in to the next. Tannehill and Cousins maybe qualify as +0.25 players now, but neither averages over 20+ pts/gm)

·       Jonathan Taylor +0.0 (His value has been everywhere this year. Marlon Mack was the only reason I had him ranked this low. When Mack went down I pegged him for +0.75 with the possibility to go +1.0…and then nothing materialized until late into the year)

·       Devin Singletary +0.0 (Started hearing whispers of Zack Moss splitting carries + Josh Allen hogs goal line rushes)

A few places where I was dead wrong

·       Stefon Diggs +0.0 (Turns out, Josh Allen actually got better - +10% Completion % in 2020)

·       Josh Allen +0.5 (Averaging 24.7 pts/gm which would have been the QB2 overall last year by almost 3 pts/gm. Currently QB4)

·       Kyler Murray +0.75 (Not nearly high enough on him. Averaging 26.5 pts/gm as the QB1 overall. Playing at a +1.0 level)

·       DK Metcalf +0.25 (Seattle hired their lead chef to work full time)

·       Lamar Jackson +1.0, Mark Andrews +0.75 (Uhhh, why is this team broken?)

·       Kenyan Drake +0.75 (Beware the extravagant 8 game sample size that says someone is a world-beater)

·       Zach Ertz +0.75 (Is this the cliff year at 30 years old? How did Tony G catch 83 balls at age 37?)

·       Aaron Rod Gers +0.25 (Yeah he’s a +0.75 guy now…should have known that drafting the backup QB would light a fire under Aaron: we’ve only seen this from Alex Smith and Joe Flacco in 2 of the last 3 years…Wait, why hasn’t this applied to Wentz yet?)

·       Davante Adams +0.75 (Good golly, A-Aron’s resurgence means Davante is almost on +1.25 level when he is healthy)

·       Keenan Allen +0.25 (This was all about Tyrod…then we found out that Justin Herbert was interning specifically for Keenan Allen and the Chargers med staff decided to euthanize Tyrod)

·       TJ Hockenson +0.0 (2nd year leap puts him at TE3 overall. $20 player next year?)

·       Chris Herndon +0.0 (When you read too many draft articles, you begin to believe that an Adam Gase coached player might actually become an average contributor at his position…ha!)

Injury-ruined seasons

·       Saquon, Michael Thomas +1 (Biggest team-killers to date by far)

·       CMC at +1.25 (Still overall #1 when he plays)

·       Dak at +0.75 (Was playing like a true +1 on par with Mahomes before going down)

·       Zeke at +1 (Dak died and then Dallas decided to start “Gucci DiNucci”…yeah that didn’t go well)

·       OBJ +0.5 (Traded to Cristian’s team where he put up a combined 3.5 fantasy pts in 2 games started)

·       Courtland Sutton +0.25 (After space-cadeting Sutton’s auction bid, we got our “Ball don’t lie” moment a few weeks later. Trevor is shrugging as he reads this.)

 Great, let’s move on. Luck, imagined as either dice rolls or Luck Dragons depending on who you talk to, plays a pretty big part in fantasy success every year. Too many injuries? See you next year. Tough schedule? Hope for a good tiebreaker and maybe you can sneak into the playoffs with the #4 spot. These are probably the most talked about facets of the game since they are beyond our control and create the classic “if only I didn’t have that injury back in high school, i’d have crushed you guys” cop-out that we’ve all heard for years. Let’s see who really has a case to be upset, shall we?

Let’s start with one of my favorites – every team’s record if we played in a league where the top 6 scores secured a win each week (in lieu of head to head matchups). This is a much more “fair” look at how your team performed on a weekly basis when you throw out the schedule which is always a subject of scrutiny, consternation, and conspiracy theories each season.

There you have it. Good news is, the top 5 in our league standings would be the exact same top 5 if we played the other way. The schedule hasn’t defrauded anyone of a 2020 playoff spot. Bad news is, the bottom of this list is mildly shocking. Cristian has struggled all year for wins and this shows that his team hasn’t been half bad – but he has essentially lost out on 4 wins due to schedule. Yikes. Phil on the other hand was in playoff contention up until week 12, whereas his team has the fewest expected wins in the league….Of course for those with conspiratorial thoughts, you’ll notice the Stark brothers combine for +7 “lucky” wins due to schedule. Of course the Stark wife had to bite the bullet to make it look fair (-2 “lucky” wins). I’ll let everyone digest that and make their own judgments. (Where is that clause in the constitution involving starting a new league without the commish? This is evidence!)

The next “luck metric” that dominates our chat conversation and generally elicits “I got screwed, feel bad for me” self-pity arguments would be games lost to injury. Everyone knows it sucks and everyone experiences it to some degree every year. And if you play long enough, you will get hit by the double ACL tear/broken collarbone/never-healing ankle injury to all of your star players and be left at a severe disadvantage. It’s gonna be okay Sport, put on a brave face and hit the waiver wire. Come back next year and clap secretly at 3pm on Monday when Schefty tweets the next guy’s RB1 season-ender. (After the large exhale that it didn’t happen to your RB1 of course.) Ending rant, just know that if you experienced the injury season from hell, the rest of the league knows that it’s part of the fantasy business and are very relieved that it didn’t happen to them. Empathy runs high, sympathy runs low. (And I just removed my ability to ever complain publicly about my team’s injuries by writing this now.)

After all the talk has subsided, let’s check facts. First table: mid-game injuries. These are games where players play a much reduced role and typically produce dreadful fantasy finishes. There’s a bit of subjectivity here (if a player plays 3 quarters and gets hurt, I don’t count that as a mid game injury. But if he plays ½ or less of his normal playing time, it would count.) I also add mid-game benching to QBs because they fit the description as fantasy wreckers due to an unforeseen cutback in playing time. Here is the Commissioner’s official list:

Congrats on that title Jason, I know you were hoping for it. Just know, you weren’t THAT far ahead of the rest of us. Mon and Trevor on the other hand can only blame poor performance on their season’s disappointments (or better yet, the schedule!)

So I buried the lead a bit on Mr. Montgomery here, because the next table should give him his share of justice on 2020 injuries.

So the above list is missed games + mid-game injuries for drafted starters and traded players updated through week 13 (except for those with season long injuries – I went ahead and added week 14 there). Jason, there’s your proof. Nobody deserves to bellyache more than you, friend. 19 of those games were from QBs (Dak/Jimmy G) which added to a smattering of missed games from the rest of the roster (Godwin 4, Ridley 3, Aaron Jones 2). I haven’t tracked this before, but I imagine that this year was significantly worse than others (more soft tissue injuries and COVID positives were the biggest culprits.) The hope is that 2021 gives us a bit of a reprieve here.

Before we conclude, I recognize that there is a portion of the audience who prefers the entertainment value of this yearly endeavor, so I’m going to do my best to hand out a few fun awards. Without further ado, the 2020 AJSL Dundees (this award style hasn’t possibly been overdone, right?)

Dundee to The Scorned Lover: Mr. Jordan Swavely on behalf of Henry Ruggs.

While I wrote this tribute in his farewell on the group chat, it bears repeating: 7 pts or less scored by Ruggs in 6 straight games, starts him again for a 7th week and only a 50 yard bomb on the last play of the game saves Ruggs from another 3 point performance. Totaling the points for those 7 starts, Ruggs scored 36 points for a 5.1 average. Ruggs averaged 3.4 targets/gm in these contests. You do you, Swave. Go and get your man.

Dundee for the Best Team Name: Mr. Greg Poelman, ShlongBarry Sanders

Any reference including a dong and our beloved college town is going to score high on both the Dude and Nostalgia scales. Plus a Barry Sanders nod, we like that.

Dundee for the Best Team Picture: Mrs. Monica Stark on behalf of Presidential Security

Any time you can get combine Greg Poelman and The Donald in Photoshop and it doesn’t even look that fake, you have my attention and affection. And now you have a Dundee to go along with it. Well done.

Honorable mention: Monica’s Team, Bring Out Your Dead

Golden Tickets to the Winning Waiver Warriors: Mr. Scooter Nelson, James Robinson; Mr. Blake Grundy, Justin Herbert; Mr. Jack Holmer, Justin Jefferson

Since everyone is bidding for the “winning lottery tickets” of the waiver pool, we’re going to give out Golden Tickets to those that struck waiver wire gold this season. Scooter milked 11 starts out of Robinson who averaged 17.6 pts/gm during that span. Robinson has been the RB4 overall since the week 2 pickup. Grundy picked up Herbert for week 3 and never looked back, banking 10 starts at 22.5 pts/gm (He’s the QB7 in that time frame). Holmer nabbed Jefferson before Week 4 and was rewarded with the WR4 from that point on. Impressively he only benched him once, refusing to play him against his beloved Bears. This is the dream of every late Tuesday night and you guys reaped the spoils. Well done, gents.

Dundee to the Wounded Wavier Warriors: Mr. Phil Stark, Devonta Freeman; Mr. Jack Holmer, Darrell Henderson; Mr. Trevor Allison, Nyheim Hines

Big money, No whammy. That’s the goal. Of course more times than not, the reality is…more like this. Phil emptied out the pocketbook early on in the season after the Saquon injury to grab his replacement with a winning bid of $78 on Devonta (next highest bid: $15). Devonta responded with five games played, two of which resulted in 1 point showings. Then he followed Saquon to IR and Soape picked up the true workhorse of the Giants backfield in Wayne Gallman, who hasn’t pickup up less than 10 points in six straight games. Ouch. It took $54 to secure the rights to Darrell Henderson after week 2, seemingly the new Rams lead RB. Unfortunately Jack’s faith manifested at the wrong times: 5 starts of Henderson yielded 6.3 pts/gm, while Henderson’s two strong games (18.5 and 20.3 pts) were enjoyed on Holmer’s bench. Not fun. $46 was the bid that beat out 7 other bidders after week 1 for Nyheim Hines’s services, after which Trevor was rewarded with 5 straight games of 8 points or less. After cutting him loose over the bye week, Hines busted out for four double digit games in six tries, music no doubt to Trevor’s ears. A Dundee for your troubles, boys.

The “Fantasy Football Was A Lot More Fun Last Year” Dundee: Mr. Cristian Driver

Dundee for a Fun and Easy Season: Mr. David Stark

Injuries, COVID surprises, bad schedules, underperformance? Didn’t seem that big of a deal to me.

Dundee for Most Attempts to Defeat a Hornet’s Nest: Mr. Jason Montgomery

Similar to our favorite Office handyman Nate, Jason was tasked with eliminating the danger of his crumbling fantasy season created by the aforementioned injury bug. Both hailing from the historically-rich metropolis of “La Philadelphia”, what ensued after Jason’s 4-0 start pairs Nate and Jason together even further. Jason utilized a league-high 20 unique waiver pickups that entered the starting lineup this season. Results were bleak; the fast start was followed by a 2-7 record that signaled victory to the opposition. Maybe try the bow and arrow next time?

Receiver Corps Dundee of Excellence: Mr. Joel Soape

It only took 3 name changes to figure out which WR was needed (Red Solo Kupp -> Mike’d Up -> The Adams Bomb) , but Soape finally landed on the right guy for the job by calling on Davante Adams and his 22.1 pts/gm this year (easily the WR1 in this metric). Somehow Corey Davis (left for dead after last year) has had a career resuscitation on this team as well, dropping a 30 burger in week 12. The Receiver Corps salutes your dedication to their fraternity, Mr. Soape.

Ortonary Gentlemen Power Rankings, Week 1

We back.

1. WAP (Chris “ashamed to admit this but I had no idea you moved to Modesto until you turned on the webcam for the draft” Gatzow) (1-0)

If Big Ben is good for 20+ a week, we’re all in big trouble. Plenty of RB depth, plenty of WR depth (even without Deebo), Waller will probably be ok. Yet again, Chris should teach a fucking class on how to draft. Is this finally his year? We’ll see. Nobody that hasn’t won one deserves one more than Chris, who seems to put together bonkers ass teams every single year. 

2. KYLER INSTINCT (Alex “Would be a terrible NFL GM” Ahn) (1-0)

The best set of runningbacks Orton has probably ever seen, although it was aided a ton by the Mack injury. Alex has 4 guys who would probably walk into anyone else’s lineup, and it’s insane. Kyler looks like the real deal. The Ravens defense is always somehow 50% better when you roster them. However, will those receivers and tight ends hold up all year? I’m thinking you’ll get more down weeks than up weeks from those guys, but it might not matter with the rest of the roster. You’d probably be lower if not for a lucky injury to Conner, I can’t not factor that in.

3. I Won’t Bang Your Wife (Anthony “prepared less than all of us and destroyed week 1″ Mendola) (1-0)

We all questioned Anthony drafting who he drafted and when he drafted them, but this is why he does it! I view my team and Anthony’s pretty similarly, but he has significantly more depth than I do. Losing bell might be a blessing in disguise, since Bell might suck this year even if he played. You have a set starting lineup outside of your flex (but plenty of options for it), and I like those teams in which there isn’t much uncertainty. The only reason you aren’t higher is Ertz’ uncertain situation. He scored but did almost nothing outside of that, and seems to be arguing with management and may even be traded. Rodgers being Rodgers would give you a really valuable trade chip.

4. Billy Crammed (David “Trash Julian Edelman takes apparently” Chinchilla) (1-0)

Definition of a glass cannon. Arguably the best starting lineup in the league, with absolutely ZERO depth behind the starters. Part of that is drafting my own handcuffs (which look like a good move, Edmonds and Mattison looked good W1) but when AP is my only non-handcuff cover at RB and Anthony Miller is my only current cover at WR, That’s not great. We all know depending on Will Fuller is a fool’s errand. Golladay can’t come back sooner. Ridley breaking out might make up for Hurst not being as good as we may have thought.

5. Praters Gonna Prate (Jack “strangely absent so far” Cleek) (0-1)

Was James Conner staying healthy away from having a pretty impressive win/week. I’m personally very high on Ryan (will be throwing all fuckin game every game), Gurley (receiving option on that same offense), Mixon (once Burrow figures it out), Davante (Literally Jesus Christ) and Jared Cook might be the #1 receiver on that team until Thomas is back. The Conner injury is a BUMMER, but you may have found a diamond in the rough with Robinson, and I like the depth behind McLaurin.

6. Odell and the Poopers (Alec “Almost Married” Bernstein) (0-1)

So I might also be one of the luckiest people from week 1, because Alec’s team legitimately had 3 touchdown passes that they dropped (like in their hands, in the end zone) and Mayfield wildly overthrew OBJ on what should have been a pretty long TD if I’m not mistaken. The top end talent on this team is kind of crazy (Deshaun, Jacobs, Julio) and could score 90 by themselves on a weekly basis. The problem is the rest of the team needs to probably step up a bit more than they have. Sutton coming back will make his life a lot easier, but if OBJ and Robinson keep beefing with their teams Alec might be hard pressed for a solid flex. I’d also be...mildly concerned about the RB2 spot. Singletary might be in a full on committee where Moss gets the valuable touches. 

7. Pain (Dylan “Loser Pick’em Loser #1″ Jessop) (0-1)

Josh Allen is wild. Truly wild. I think his rushing floor will be enough to make him super viable, but oh man the rest of the roster didn’t have a great showing outside of Henry, and you probably didn’t get his floor since the game was close. The Chargers seemed hell bent on using Ekeler as a primary runner (when he’s devastating as a receiver) and your receivers had a BAD day. I do think you wildly underperformed (and still got to 115ish) but I just wish there were a few more encouraging signs. Moore, Hilton, Allen, and Chark all had an underwhelming day in one form of another, and RoJo (currently your flex) might not have too much life left as a useful player. Joshua Kelley SZN.

8. Baker’s Dozen (Scott “Beshoy week 1 nemesis” Felgenhauer) (1-0)

Losing your first round pick is never a good thing, and even though you won I think you’re going to struggle through a few weeks. Ingram might be losing his job, David Johnson has a really bad matchup (he looked REALLY good though!!!), and the receivers are ROUGH without Thomas (although Evans coming back could fix a lot). I think you’ll need Lamar and Andrews to continuously have monster weeks for you to have a chance, but that might not be the worst bet to make. Everyone who plays you has to withstand 50 from Lamar and Andrews every week. 

9. The Shoydemic (Beshoy “Loser Pick’em Loser #2″ Halim) (0-1)

Lowest scorer, oof. I believe in Miles Sanders as much as anyone, so him coming back will definitely boost this quite a bit as the season goes on. Hines looks like a potential league winner. I think you’d be much higher if you didn’t have a ton of bad matchups (Barkley and Engram can’t possibly do worse) and injuries (Sanders). Brady looked better for fantasy than he did in real life, which is all that matters to you. I actually do like your team but for the sake of the power rankings I can’t ignore the awful week. I also can’t ignore the fact that...you have NO receivers outside of Cooper and Godwin? Beshoy what the hell man? Godwin has a concussion lol

10. Who’s your daddy (Tony “Texas” Mendola) (0-1)

Our trade was fair but looks a little worse for you in hindsight. Lindsay got hurt and Gallup looked uninvolved. However, Mahomes/Clyde is a crazy good top 2, and Montgomery will only get better as the season goes along despite a pretty slow start. Juju looked better than advertised, but the rest of the receiving corps was ROUGH. I think drafting more receivers/RB’s would have looked a lot better in hindsight as opposed to the three QB’s. This is probably a little harsh, but I like the roster as a whole the least here. Unproven RBs, and receivers who were all seen as risks prior to the year.

  Over the last few days, DJ D-Nice has been hopping on IG Live to host what he calls “Homeschool at Club Quaratine.” Last night, EVERYONE was in the online mix. Like, everyone. We've been rocking out since Day 1!

Over the last few seasons Saturday Night Live built an exceptional Donald Trump sketches.

Saturday Night Live is all about having fun, creating comedic political jokes as well as featuring special guests. Further, they’ve nailed it since the election that has The United States split apart with anger and resentment.

USA Today had a chance to catch up with Alec Baldwin about his impersonation of Donald Trump.

“I had a lot of fun with [the cast], and when Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider wrote [Trump sketches in 2016 and 2017], that was new, it was fresh and the ratings were good. But I feel like I’m done with that now. I’m so done with that.”

With this in mind, USA Today had to know if he would be returning to the role, asking if he would consider playing the part again on SNL.

Additionally, it’s this role that won him a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series back in 2017. He responded with a firm answer to their question.

“I can’t imagine I would do it again. I just can’t. They should find somebody who wants to do it.” Baldwin cited comparisons between his impression of Trump and Anthony Atamanuik’s impression on The President Show, giving his blessing to that casting idea. “If [Atamanuik] wants the job, it’s his,” he told the publication. “He can have it.”

Unfortunately, it sounds like he isn’t feeling the role. But that’s okay, the SNL crew has some amazing talent who will more than likely, still crack us up with their political comedy.

Hey, maybe Leslie Jones can step up to the plate? Or hell, Pete Davidson!

Time will tell, Saturday Night Live returns to NBC this fall. Lastly, you will be able to watch on Hulu.
