Police in the Indian capital, Delhi, have raided the homes of prominent journalists and authors in connection with an investigation into the funding of news website NewsClick.
NewsClick's founder Prabir Purkayastha and a colleague were arrested. Police also seized laptops and mobile phones.
Officials are reportedly investigating allegations that NewsClick got illegal funds from China - a charge it denies.
Critics say the move is an intentional attack on press freedom.
Started in 2009, NewsClick is an independent news and current affairs website known to be critical of the government. In 2021, it was raided by tax authorities on allegations of breaking India's foreign direct investment rules.
The co-ordinated raids at 30 locations on Tuesday are some of the largest and most extensive on India's media in recent years. Police later confirmed they had arrested Mr Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty, the website's head of human resources.
"A total of 37 male suspects have been questioned at premises, nine female suspects have been questioned at their respective places of stay and digital devices, documents etc have been seized/collected for examination," a police statement said.
Opposition leaders accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of a "fresh attack on the media". But Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said investigative agencies were merely doing their job.
How did the raids happen?
Among those also questioned were journalists Abhisar Sharma, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Aunindyo Chakravarty, Urmilesh, Bhasha Singh, popular satirist Sanjay Rajoura and historian Sohail Hashmi. Some were taken to police stations.
Searches were also carried out at the website's office in Delhi, news agency ANI reported.
In Mumbai, activist Teesta Setalvad's house was also searched. Ms Setalvad has long fought for victims of the deadly 2002 riots in Gujarat state and has written articles critical of the government for NewsClick.
A source close to Mr Purkayastha told the BBC that more than 15 policemen arrived at the editor's home at 06:30 local time (01:00 GMT).
"They did not produce any warrants or paperwork, questioned him for several hours and took away all the electronic devices they found at home," they said. Later, news agencies showed him being taken away by the police in a vehicle.
Mr Rajoura's lawyer, Ilin Saraswat, said the comedian was raided at the same time and that police took away his laptop, his two phones, some DVDs of his old work and some documents.
"The police said that Mr Rajoura is not named in the current investigation, but since he has worked with the website, he will be interrogated. We have not been provided a copy of the police complaint," he added.
BBC India offices searched by income tax officials
Indian tax authorities raid critical media outlets
India top court frees Muslim comic on bail
According to reports, the raids are in connection with a case registered against NewsClick in August after a New York Times report alleged that the website had received funds from an American millionaire to spread "Chinese propaganda".
It claimed that Neville Roy Singham worked closely with the "Chinese government media machine" and used his network of non-profit groups and shell companies to "finance its propaganda worldwide".
A case was reportedly registered against the website under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA, a draconian anti-terror law that makes it nearly impossible to get bail. NewsClick has rejected all the charges as false.
Who was raided?
All the people who were raided have been associated with NewsClick - some are employees, while others have worked on freelance projects.
Prabir Purkayastha, its founder and editor-in-chief, is the author of a number of books and a founding member of the Delhi Science Forum. During the 1975 Emergency - when civil liberties were suspended - he was jailed along with several opposition politicians.
Bhasha Singh is an activist and journalist who has reported extensively on manual scavenging and farmers' suicides. She has accused the government of being anti-women and on Monday appeared in a NewsClick video expressing concern over the increasing trend of members of the governing BJP praising the man who assassinated India's independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.
Abhisar Sharma is a prominent video journalist known for his critical views of the government. He worked for BBC Hindi before moving to work at the NDTV news channel. One of his last videos covered widespread protests by government employees against a new pension scheme.
Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, writer, journalist and filmmaker, is best known for his investigations into billionaire tycoon Gautam Adani and is facing several defamation suits filed by the industrialist. Earlier this year, he was mentioned in a report by Hindenburg Research which alleged that companies owned by Mr Adani had engaged in decades of "brazen" stock manipulation and accounting fraud - allegations denied by the industrialist who is perceived as being close to PM Modi.

Priyanka Gandhi Joins Wrestlers Protest, Asks Cops To Show FIR Copy
The Delhi Police, which functions under Amit Shah's Home Ministry, filed the two first information reports (FIRs) hours after the Supreme Court ordered them to do so.
Tumblr media
New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met protesting wrestlers at Delhi's Jantar Mantar today to express solidarity with their demand for action against the alleged sexual harassment of women athletes by superiors. The wrestlers have been on a sit-in at Jantar Mantar demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on complaints of sexual harassment.
At the protest venue, the Congress general secretary hit out at the Delhi Police for not providing a copy of the First Information Report, or FIR, filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
"I don't have any expectations from the PM (Narendra Modi), because if he is worried about these wrestlers, then why has he not talked to them or met them yet. Why the govt is trying to save him (Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh," she said.
The Delhi Police on Friday filed two cases against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief after the Supreme Court ordered them to do so. One of the FIRs is over a complaint of sexual harassment by a minor, filed under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which gives no scope for bail.
The Delhi Police will pursue the case actively, sources said.
But despite the assurance of police action, the wrestlers said they will continue their sit-in protest demanding the "immediate arrest" of the WFI chief.
"We respect Supreme Court's order, but we don't have faith in Delhi Police. This fight is not for an FIR. This fight is to punish people like him. He needs to be in jail and stripped of his portfolios," the wrestlers said.
Earlier this week, Priyanka Gandhi had slammed the government, saying that the pleas of the sportspersons, who enhance the country's honour, were being ignored. She had asserted that "when the arrogance of a party and its leaders" is sky high, then such voices are crushed.
Congress leaders such as Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda and Udit Raj had also joined the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar earlier this week to express solidarity with them.
Mr Singh, who is also a BJP MP, welcomed the Supreme Court's order to file the police case into allegations of sexual harassment against him.
Mr Singh told reporters the wrestlers should have waited for the report of a committee that was tasked to look into the matter before they decided to sit on a protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
"I am happy with the judiciary's decision. The Delhi Police will investigate the allegations and I am ready to cooperate with them in every possible way. No one is bigger than the judiciary in this country. The order has come to file an FIR (first information report). The government had also said it had no objection to filing an FIR. I am not larger than the Supreme Court. I welcome the order," Mr Singh told reporters.

Key Suspect in Journalist Mukesh Chandrakar’s Murder Arrested in Hyderabad
In a significant development, Chhattisgarh police arrested local contractor Suresh Chandrakar, the main accused in the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar. The arrest was made in the early hours of Monday from Hyderabad, according to officials.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police, Bijapur, was instrumental in tracing and apprehending Chandrakar. The SIT is currently interrogating him to uncover further details about the case.
Mukesh Chandrakar, 33, was a journalist with NDTV and also ran a popular YouTube channel, Bastar Junction, which had over 159,000 subscribers. Mukesh was reported missing on January 1, and his elder brother Yukesh Chandrakar filed a missing person complaint the next day. On January 3, his body was discovered in a freshly sealed septic tank at the accused’s premises in Chattan Para area.
According to police, the victim suffered multiple injuries caused by blunt objects, indicating a brutal attack.
Political Controversy Surrounding the Case
The case has taken a political turn, with Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma alleging that Suresh Chandrakar is associated with the Congress party. However, Congress spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla denied these claims and countered that Chandrakar had recently joined the BJP.
Mukesh Chandrakar was reportedly murdered following a heated argument on January 1 with Ritesh Chandrakar, Suresh Chandrakar’s brother, over allegations of interference in Suresh’s road construction work. The tension between the journalist and the accused intensified after Mukesh highlighted alleged corruption in Bijapur’s road projects in a news report aired on December 25.
The report triggered a Public Works Department (PWD) probe, which may have further escalated the conflict.
Arrests Made So Far
Before Suresh Chandrakar’s arrest, police detained his brother Ritesh Chandrakar, supervisor Mahendra Ramteke, and another associate, Dinesh Chandrakar, on Saturday. The SIT continues to investigate the case to establish a comprehensive timeline and identify all those involved in the murder.
Mukesh Chandrakar had earned a reputation for fearless journalism. He had previously played a critical role in negotiating the release of CoBRA commando Rakeshwar Singh Manhas from Maoist captivity in 2021.
This tragic incident highlights the risks faced by journalists in the pursuit of truth. For latest news headlines in India, subscribe to our newsletter!

What's REALLY Happening to Muslims in India?
Find out the truth about what's happening to Muslims in India with exclusive coverage from Middle East Eye. Learn about the latest news and updates regarding the BJP and the impact on the Muslim community. #MEEnews #MiddleEastEye #BJP Imagine standing on a global stage, where voices from around the world converge to discuss pressing issues that affect millions. Today, we’re diving into a complex topic: the treatment of Muslims in India and the role of international forums like the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, or OIC. It’s a conversation that’s not just about politics; it’s about human rights, dignity, and the very essence of what it means to be part of a global community. Let’s start with the OIC. This organization represents over 50 Muslim-majority countries, and its mission is to safeguard the interests of Muslims worldwide. So, when it comes to addressing concerns about alleged anti-Muslim policies in India, the OIC is in a prime position to take action. They can issue statements, initiate resolutions, and lobby at the UN to shine a spotlight on these issues. But here’s where it gets tricky. The OIC’s strength lies in its unity, and that’s often a double-edged sword. Member states have different relationships with India. Take Saudi Arabia and the UAE, for example. They maintain strong economic ties with India, which might make them hesitant to criticize it openly. It’s a classic case of balancing diplomatic relations with moral responsibility. Now, let’s talk about the United Nations. The Human Rights Council, or UNHRC, is one of the key channels for raising complaints about discrimination and violence. It reviews country-specific situations and can recommend actions or even investigations. That’s powerful stuff! But here’s the catch: getting resolutions passed in the General Assembly or the Security Council is no walk in the park. It requires building diplomatic alliances, and we know that powerful countries, especially allies of India, can wield their veto power to block any unfavorable resolutions. It’s a chess game where the stakes are incredibly high. What about India’s response? You can bet they’ll defend themselves vigorously. They’ll point to their democratic framework, the constitutional guarantees for religious minorities, and their long-standing history of multiculturalism. India might argue that critics are politicizing internal matters, framing the narrative to suggest that what’s happening is a misunderstanding rather than a violation of rights. It’s a complex narrative that can sometimes overshadow the voices of those who are actually affected. So, what are the possible outcomes of raising these concerns at international forums? For one, it could heighten awareness. A discussion on a global platform can draw attention to the plight of Muslims in India and potentially galvanize action. But let’s not kid ourselves; it could also strain diplomatic relations. If the OIC or UN takes a strong stance, it might lead to tensions between India and certain member states, impacting bilateral ties. And without substantial international consensus or clear evidence of large-scale violations, any resolution might have limited enforceability. It’s a delicate dance of diplomacy and ethics.

SC Refers Petition on Inclusion of Political Parties Under PoSH Act to Election Commission
Tumblr media
The Supreme Court on Monday directed a petitioner, who sought the inclusion of political parties under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013 (PoSH Act), to first approach the Election Commission of India (ECI). The court emphasized that the ECI, which is responsible for the registration and regulation of political parties, is the appropriate forum to address this issue.
The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Manmohan, noted that the ECI is the natural authority to handle grievances related to political parties. The court recorded the statement of senior counsel Shobha Gupta, representing petitioner Yogamaya MG, who confirmed that her client would approach the ECI and, if necessary, pursue other legal avenues if her concerns remained unresolved.
The petition, filed as a public interest litigation (PIL), argued that political parties should be included under the PoSH Act, citing their failure to comply with the law’s provisions, particularly the establishment of Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) to address sexual harassment complaints. The petition named several prominent political parties, including the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), as respondents.
Gupta informed the court that the plea stemmed from the absence of a standardized grievance mechanism within political parties, leaving women vulnerable in political spaces. She argued that the lack of transparency, insufficient structures, and inconsistent implementation of ICCs have contributed to a culture that fails to prioritize women’s safety and empowerment.
The bench also referred to a previous Kerala High Court ruling, which declined to apply the PoSH Act to political parties, stating there was no employer-employee relationship in such entities. However, the petitioner sought a broader interpretation of the terms "workplace" and "employer" under the Act to include political parties, given their significant influence in Indian society.
The PIL highlighted specific lapses within political parties. The CPI(M) was noted to have ICCs with external members, while the BJP and Congress acknowledged inadequacies in their mechanisms, often routing complaints to disciplinary committees or state-level offices instead of dedicated ICCs. The AAP was flagged for its lack of transparency about existing grievance mechanisms. Additionally, the All-India Professional Congress, an affiliated body of Congress, was found to have an ICC, but it did not extend to the broader party framework.
The petition argued that these inconsistencies undermine the intent of the PoSH Act, contributing to a culture of impunity when addressing sexual harassment. It emphasized that the absence of a robust and transparent redressal mechanism within political parties leads to underreporting, varying levels of protection for victims, and a general tolerance of sexual harassment incidents
