What makes Delhi University so elusive – specialties, culture and why it is so sought after?
Tumblr media
The admission season is upon us, and the hustle bustle of the process is already underway. For many of us, attending Delhi University has been a dream that we have been dreaming ever since we were kids. The idea of DU is not just getting the best education, but also the idea of freedom, the thrill of college life, meeting new people, and experiencing life on our own terms. Well, that’s what we built up in our heads at least, didn’t we?
Delhi University has a desirable brand value, it offers well-designed courses and overall grooming. It may be the glamour of being the alma mater of many famous personalities that adds to its value, or maybe just the fact that it is the heart and soul of our capital. Apart from these things, why are we so drawn to Delhi University? What makes it the experience of our lives? Why not a private university or any other university for that matter? Some famous people must have been to other universities, too. What makes DU so elusive, and yet so limpid?
Toppers All The Way
Tumblr media
For School toppers, it is a no-brainer. They want a tier-one college, and an Honors Course as well. For those with average scores (90% is so common, these days), settling for a course at a lesser cut-off is quite common. The cut-offs range from 85 to 99, so only half of who dream, make it. The association of DU with the best minds is what makes it such a great experience. Getting into DU is almost a benchmark for intelligence, or so it seems!
Courses, Courses Everywhere
Tumblr media
DU colleges have courses ranging over a number of domains. Applied courses have, especially, been developed to probe students to apply their knowledge than just sit around cramming. Courses inBotany,Zoology,Psychology, Business studies, Vocational Studies, Languages and Economics are aimed to provide an in-depth knowledge of the subjects.
Such a Big World
DU’s central location is what keeps it alive and busy. Delhi University, with its sprawling north campus has nine colleges, and it is located around the Faculty of Arts Extension, which is a hub for political and social activities. The large and lush campus is every student’s dream come true; from the book shops to jewellery vendors, from momos to cozy cafes, DU’s North Campus has it all. Students of every ethnicity walk around, and you are a part of much bigger culture at DU. It doesn’t matter what part of the country you come from; here, you are a part of something bigger. In every nook and corner, students are seen discussing every possible topic, from world news to sports to the latest gadgets. In the plethora of activities, you become a better person, a socially-mature individual, an adult with your own quirks and individuality.
On the other hand, the South Campus is a bit different, quieter, more peaceful, but still a beautiful place where the best minds of the country can enjoy some solitude in the hilly, green campus.
Great Teachers
Tumblr media
With so much to look forward to, a person can almost be forgiven to forget the most important part, the faculty, which makes DU what is it famous for. World class scholars, researchers and eminent people in their respective fields constitute Delhi University’s faculty. And the placement season sees top companies recruiting the brilliant students who make it to DU amidst cut-throat competition (99.9%, anyone?).
The best college festivals
Tumblr media
Delhi University is known for organizing the best fests in the country. Antardhwani, the cultural fest organized every year gives students opportunities to display their talent, be it performing arts, debating, elocution or anything else. Name it and we got it. SRCC, Kamla Nehru and Hindu college among countless others are known for their fests.
And, so let’s brace ourselves for the roller coaster that has begun because it’s time to leave the pond, and take a swim in the ocean.

Competition for Law College in India
Tumblr media
The desire to become a lawyer is frequently sparked by inspiration. Many people who want to practice Law often get inspiration from their families, outstanding judges, or the conviction that one person can change the world. Therefore, students wish to choose the top law college in order to fulfil their desire.
The extensive list of personalities who have used this vocation as a stepping stone to greatness includes people like Mahatma Gandhi and Barack Obama. Lawyers no longer rely on black robes and courtrooms as their main sources of income. Every industry is experiencing an exponential rise in the need for legal knowledge since every business, politician, brand, and celebrity needs an experienced attorney to help them through the legal system.
Competition for Law College in India
The admissions cycle became more competitive with each passing year, overwhelming many law schools with more applications than they could process.
The COVID-19 pandemic’s effects, economic instability, large social justice demonstrations, and a controversial election that made attorneys the center of attention are just a few of the factors driving the surge that seem to be passing trends. Many prospective law school students may seek alternatives instead of battling another potentially competitive admissions cycle, given the low jobless rate.
In India, the legal industry is dynamic and calls for highly qualified attorneys. Law has become a very competitive career path due to the rise in the number of aspirants looking ahead to making their career in the field and the rising need for legal experts. The shifting socio-cultural milieu and the effects of globalization have made the job of a lawyer even more difficult. For students to be prepared to handle these problems and flourish in their careers, a law school is essential.
The legal profession is incredibly lucrative, but it’s also immensely satisfying. A successful legal profession largely depends on effective communication abilities (both oral and written).
Outstanding research abilities, attention to detail, evaluative thinking, and analytical abilities are just a few characteristics a legal student must possess. However, logical reasoning is the most crucial ability in this profession. Students need to be able to view things objectively and form justifiable conclusions from them. Law is undoubtedly a job you should think about if you are intelligent, tenacious, ambitious, and not afraid to express your opinions.
In such a scenario, the Department of Law under Maharishi Markandeshwar (Deemed-to-be) University, Mullana has built unmatched popularity and credibility among law education aspirants owing to its faculty, state-of-the-art infrastructure and education pedagogy.  MM(DU) is accredited by NAAC with a Grade ‘A++’ which makes it one of the best universities in North India for professional education. Various specializations in Law
The demand for and popularity of the legal profession has significantly increased. From graduation forward, students pursue a legal education in higher education. Anyone could specialize in the following areas and have a prosperous legal career. Some of the areas are listed below.

"I respond to every fucking detail of the time we're in" says Frank Gehry
Frank Gehry's new tower in Arles fits with both the ancient Roman city and today's environmental agenda, the architect claimed in an exclusive interview with Dezeen.
Speaking to Dezeen in Arles last week the Pritzker Prize-winner said The Tower, which has a steel-and-concrete frame and a glazed drum at its base, responds to current concerns about the carbon footprint of architecture.
The Tower opened last week
"We fit into it," said the Canadian-American architect. "But I can't explain it. I respond to every fucking detail of the time we're in with the people we live with, in this place," added the 92-year-old when asked about the building's environmental performance.
"So it's all taken into account as best I can," he continued.
"You know, I believe that's the most important thing to do," he added, gesturing to the face mask in his hands. "To live in the place and time you are in and what the issue is, you know, even with these fucking masks."
Sustainable elements include natural ventilation of the circular glazed podium while some of the building's energy comes from renewable sources. However, precise details of the building's embodied carbon have not been disclosed. The team did not submit the building for environmental certification under the French HQE programme.
The tower forms part of the Luma Arles cultural campus
The Tower finally opened last week along with the rest of the vast Luma Arles cultural campus after a 14-year gestation period.
It serves as an entrance pavilion, lookout tower, exhibition-and-events space and beacon for the 27-acre campus commissioned by Maja Hoffmann, the art-collecting founder of Luma Foundation and the heiress to the Hoffmann-La Roche (now Roche) pharmaceutical fortune.
Founded in 2004, the philanthropic foundation "focuses on the direct relationships between art, culture, environmental issues, human rights, education and research".
The Luma name comes from Hoffmann's children, Lucas and Marina, echoing the way her father, the eminent environmentalist and World Wildlife Fund co-founder Luc Hoffmann, named his philanthropic conservation body MAVA Foundation after the initials of his children.
"I try not to repeat myself"
Gehry and Hoffmann, who is Swiss but grew up on her father's estate in the Camargue wetlands near Arles, first began discussing the building in 2006. This was long before sustainability topped the architectural agenda but when shiny icons were still very much the rage.
Their conversations began nine years after the opening of Gehry's titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and three years after the completion of his stainless-steel Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
But Gehry said that each project is a one-off rather than fitting into an evolution of his architectural approach.
"I try not to repeat myself," he said. "I just think about it at the time I'm doing it, the people I'm working with, like Maja, the community."
"So I don't think of it," he added. "I mean, naturally, there's like this historical lineage but it's just how I feel at this time in this place."
Gehry's influences include Roman and Romanesque architecture
The 1997 Bilbao building introduced Gehry to the world, rebooted the city's economy and self-image, and fuelled the trend for iconic cultural buildings in cities hoping to replicate "the Bilbao effect".
Gehry sounds a little bemused by the term. "I don't really care about that, but it's nice that it changed the community," he said, as one of his team interjected, pointing out that he received death threats when the building was first proposed.
"When I went to Bilbao it was sad," he continued. "They were having a hard time economically. The kids growing up left Bilbao to go to college. They didn't stay there."
Gehry's Guggenheim is credited with turning around the fortunes of the post-industrial city in Spain's Basque country.
"I didn't mean to change the city"
"This has changed the economy," he said. "People come. I've been told they earn over eight billion Euros since the building opened. When you go there now it's friendly and open and happy."
"People are always telling me how I changed the city," he added. "I didn't mean to change the city, I just meant to be part of the city."
But Arles is no Bilbao. The UNESCO world heritage site is already a magnet for visitors coming for its spectacular Roman remains, its connection with artist Vincent van Gogh and Les Rencontres d'Arles, its world-renowned annual photography festival.
Located in a former SNCF railway engineering works on the edge of town, the Luma Arles campus adds another world-class attraction to the tiny city, which has a population of just 50,000.
The Luma Arles campus is at the edge of the ancient city
The railway sheds, repurposed into workshops, galleries and performance spaces by Selldorf Architects, are monumental in scale but these are eclipsed by Gehry's 56-metre-high tower. It is by far the tallest building in the area and dominates Avenue Victor Hugo, the main route into Arles, on a rise above the campus.
It towers over French architect Marc Barani's low-slung and discreetly minimalist École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie, the French national photography school that sprang from the photo festival and opened in 2019, which lies directly across the road.
Arles, once a Roman provincial capital, sits on a low hill beside the river Rhône just before it enters the Camargue wetlands (which Hoffmann's father is credited with saving and where he established the Tour du Valat nature reserve) on its way to the Mediterranean, which is over 40 kilometres away.
"I don't antagonise. I don't try that"
The idea to build a tower came from Hoffmann, who expressed a desire to be able to "see the sea from the tower". But despite the requirement to build tall, Gehry said he did not intend to build a provocative structure.
"Well, I try to make it the scale of where we are," he said when reminded of the backlash from neighbours when he built his seminal 1978 home in Santa Monica. "And I try to make it user-friendly and not off-putting. So, you know, I don't make it black. And I don't antagonise. I don't try that. That's not my way."
The design process involved making dozens of scale models, many of which are exhibited in the vast exhibition space beneath the tower. These show how various approaches were explored including stacks of cubes, piles of oblongs and fabric-like forms.
However, none of the early models shows the twin concrete lift towers that break up the sculptural form at the rear of the tower.
A pair of concrete lift towers protrude from the rear of the tower
"There are over 100 models made of metal, wood… it was a long, long journey," said Gehry.
Over his career, Gehry has pioneered new approaches to creating architectural form, including scanning roughly made paper and card models and manipulating them in 3D software.
But this time, the models were made by his team. "I don't make them myself," he said. "I used to. It is a collaborative effort."
Gehry cites numerous local influences on the tower's form. Vincent van Gogh, the artist who lived in the city between 1888 and 1889 and painted many of his best-known works here, is one of them.
Gehry has compared the stainless-steel facade to the brushwork in Van Gogh's painting of Les Alpilles, a low range of mountains to the north-east of Arles that features distinctive limestone outcrops. He has also cited the nocturnal Starry Night painting as an influence.
The cladding was informed by Vincent van Gogh's paintings
The Roman architecture of Arles is another influence, with its famous amphitheatre informing the glazed drum at the base of The Tower.
"Certainly the Roman amphitheatres were in my mind but I didn't want to copy them," he said at the press conference that marked the building's opening, when he joked that The Tower is "my first Roman building".
"But I thought that having a drum on the boulevard that became the foyer for the whole building was a simple way of inviting people from all sides, from all directions, as well as having a strong symbol, presence on the street."
The drum is naturally ventilated, one of a number of energy-saving features that were reverse-engineered into the project to make it more sustainable as the project rumbled on.
Others include a biodiesel plant and solar panels that provide some of the power for the campus, and the use of interior cladding made from local materials including agricultural waste, algae and salt to replace the originally specified gypsum drywall.
The glazed drum is informed by Arles' Roman amphitheatre
The latter interventions were carried out by designers at Atelier Luma, a design research lab located at the campus and headed by curator and educator Jan Boelen. There was apparently some tension over these interventions: when another journalist asked one of Gehry's team about the materials, he replied: "That wasn't us".
Gehry took further inspiration from Romanesque architecture, including landmarks he visited when studying architecture in Paris in the 1950s.
"I visited here," he said at the press conference. "I was living in Paris and studying Roman architecture. I was very moved by the architecture."
Speaking to Dezeen later, he rattled off a list of Roman-influenced medieval buildings around the country he recalls visiting in his student days, admiring their stonework.
"Autun, Vézelay, Tournus... I guess that's Romanesque. Yeah. I liked the stone blocks but I didn't want to repeat that."
Rather than stone, The Tower is faced in 11,000 hollow, non-structural blocks made of stainless steel sheets that have a textured pattern on them, allowing them to reflect the harsh Provençal light in a softer way.
"So we studied metal because it reflects the light. But I wondered if it could be soft and feel comfortable. Which it does."
Inevitably, the building has its detractors. Does criticism concern Gehry? Or does he prefer to give people a bit of time to get used to new buildings in their neighbourhood?
"It's more like the latter," he replied. "I don't presume anything. Really. I call it friendly or happy insecurity."
The post "I respond to every fucking detail of the time we're in" says Frank Gehry appeared first on Dezeen.

New Orleans: mapping it out.
In some ways, New Orleans is exactly what I thought it would be- but more concentrated than I anticipated. It is so dense with happenings. I imagine it would be a lot/anxiety inducing for the type of tourist that makes up a long list of “must-dos” that they are determined to fit all in one day. I think New Orleans & get along is because I’ve always been a happy wanderer. No one is in a rush here, ever. In fact, it seems the more punctual/timely/quick you try to be about things, the slower you will be met.
The wandering is definitely something that runs in my family. We are like golden retrievers (in fact, we actually have one named Harley, who is also much the same). We are constantly in need of lonnnnng winding walks, or else prone to unspecific sadness. Most people don’t quite have the patience for the marathon-like walks my sisters and I go on (which is another reason I’m so happy to have them as close neighbours). Anyways, in travelling alone, I’ve been able to walk as much as I wish. And I do. Until it practically feels like my legs are going to fall off. New Orleans is really the perfect city for it too- flat, easy to navigate & small enough in sprawl. (I should note though, with it being a very old city, the trees have begun to fully revolt against their concrete prisons & so anyone with mobility issues may struggle in many of these areas). The past few days I’ve wandered through a big chunk of New Orleans, so I’ll break it down in areas.
The 7th Ward:
Definitely a more “sketchy” area, slightly north of the Marginy and where I happen to be staying. As gentrification spreads, this is the next area to be consumed. Walking distance (ten/fifteen) to the French Quarter. Wouldn’t exactly wander around this area alone, as a young woman, but if you are confident enough & know where you are going, you’ll be fine.
Bywater & Marigny & St. Claude:
Two different neighbourhoods edging the 7th ward to the south & the south-east respectively. These neighbourhoods are populated by artists, musicians & other rag-tag dreamers. The houses are colourful, some works of art in their own right. At one point in history, this was apparently a distinctly Creole area. There is definitely an “in-crowd” kind of feel to it- but if you can get in with the the crowd, it hosts all kinds of strange & wonderful DIY-style events. Definitively a “northend” of Halifax, or Leslieville of Toronto kind of feel to it, but distinctly older & much more established than either of those two places (At least Marigny is, Bywater is still in the midst of gentrifying). Marigny is definitely walking distance from the French quarter, running right down the boarder (Frenchman street- which also happens to be where all the best Jazz bars are).
The French Market:
I guess this is technically in the French Quarter, but it’s kinda it’s own thing too. This market for sure Caters largely to tourists- with booths filled with masks & keychains & Crocodile heads (and claws on keychains!), but there are also really awesome unique handcrafted items as well. This is a pretty big- farmer market style event- definitely more of a weekend thing too. (And if you were to go to the French market on the weekend, I’d recommend going to the Frenchman street craft markets too. Confusing, I know, but they are two separate things, that would be equally good to check out). There were a few booths selling soaps & scents, etc. Sculpture work in Stone & wood & tin. Loads of jewlery. There is also a really good opportunity for food- especially if you like seafood & have been wanting to indulge in some Cajun cooking. At the far end (walking away from Frenchman) is the Cafe du Monde- which has some of the most killer beignets. Seriously, I’m already thinking about going back there tomorrow again & I was just there today. (Bonus tip: if the weather is good, take the Beignets to-go and eat them overlooking the Mississippi or Jackson square, which is like steps away. The Cafe can get over-crowded and a little overwhelming at the best of times. It should be noted, I was having weird feelings about the french market while I was there, and I did rather enjoy it. The weird feelings stemming from the fact that it was in these markets that Slaves were bought and sold. Like mega-ultra-big time. New Orleans wasn’t only the biggest slave port in America, it was the biggest slave port in the entire world. That being, I was having a hard time engaging in the space as casually as one might want to enjoying Beignets under the sun.
Garden District:
HOITY_TOITYVILLE, USA. Honestly, by far the fanciest neighbourhood I’ve ever been to. Halifax has maybe one street that may come somewhere near it- but only one! And this is a whole neighbourhood!! Technically two if you count the lower garden district!! It’s insane. Historically, these houses were established after the Louisiana purchase (in which France sold the territory to the Americans). Wealthy Americans moved into the area and built their excessive mini-castles, and there they’ve been since. Seriously. This is the type of old-money area that it wouldn’t even surprise me if the house had been in the same family all those years. I tried to compartmentalize & just enjoy it for what it was, but I was so distracted by my brain shouting “What the fuck do these people do with their lives to afford this kind of excess.” I decided, a good chunk of them must be super-villains, and my brain calmed down enough with that for me to be able to engage objectively again. This place smells like flowers. All the time it seems. If you peep through the fancy-fences, there are some great gardens to be seen too. The houses are Antebellum in style & absolutely sprawling. The trees are huge & swoop over head. Many of them are busting at the brickwork & sidewalk, in a kind of beautifully rebellious way. The Lafayette Cemetery is nestled in this area too- but these days, you need a tour guide to go in most of the cemeteries.
Magazine street:
It’s not really fair to say that Magazine street really belongs in one area- It’s a really long street that changes faces many times. Throughout, however, it remains a vital artery for the city & has restaurants, cafes & retail spots all along the way. The section I found most interesting (especially if you happen to have money to burn) is the section that runs through the Garden district. I didn’t eat there (cause I don’t have that kind of money to burn.) There are lots of cool shops along this stip. Definitely some of the same type of things you’d find in the quarter- like tattoo parlours & palm readers & witchy things, but not as in-your-face about it. Lil’ bougier, but definitely worth a stroll if you are in the area.
It is also notable that in mid-town, just west of the french quarter, Magazine also hosts a few of the bigger museums- Including the Ogden museum of Southern Art which was my favourite thus far.
Canal Street:
Canal street is another vital artery that runs across (okay, about halfway) through the city. Many of the theatres are along this street- so if you were ever to see a bigger show, i’d probably be along here. Blood Orange is playing on February 19th. trying not to let that one tempt me too much.... but it makes me wanna come back.
Gentilly:
Okay, I’ll be honest, the only reason I went to this area was because I needed to get an American SIM card at Walmart. But I’m kind of a “When in Rome” kinda person, so I took some time to get a good ol’ wander in. This is more of a suburban area- but being so, was so distinctly nuclear-family American. I was kinda walking around observing everything as if I were an anthropologist. It’s in this area, that I truly learned about how loose Louisianan liquor laws are- and I’ll tell you, they are scary loose. Like drive-through Daiquari- bar loose. Asa was telling me, that because of that, there are actually specific laws now that say the Daiquiri can be in the cup holder, but the straw must be tilted away from the driver... cause you know, thats the least you can do, right? In the grocery stores, the rum is literally next to the coke. Also- throughout the city you are welcome to carry open liquor- as long as it isn’t in a glass container. Anyways, if you find yourself in Gentilly Woods, the Baptist Seminary College happens to have a really beautiful campus.
French Quarter aka Vieux Carre:
Honestly, everything you’ve heard about the French Quarter is true. It’s pretty freaking great. Yeah sure, it’s the tourist area, but it’s so interesting and full of all the best activities. The architecture of this area is also very distinct from the rest of the city. It’s one of the big legacies of what used to be the spanish colony of “Luisiana”, before the French gained control of it. Anyways, between the Palms & the buildings, you could easily imagine you were in Cuba or Haiti or something, not america. The vintage/antique stores (all more so in the east end of the Quarter) are some of the best ones I’ve ever been to. On a good day, the streets smell like Candied Pralines. The house buildings now host many boutiques and galleries. My favourite part about the area tho, is that there are witchy things all over- Bottom of the cup tea house (est.1929), Madame Laveau’s (east end of Bourbon), Hexes, & all kinds of other stores & booths that will do tarot, palmistry or tea leaves. For jazz- the best spots are all along Frenchman street in the east. The spotted cat was my favourite, but Snug Harbour & the Blue nile also had great music spilling out of them every time I walked by.
I should mention Bourbon street I guess too, it’s the biggest bar scene for sure. So much more hoaky- neon lights- the whole 9. I mean, New Orleans is a fanatastic city to party in. Seeing how I’m not having that kind of trip, I’ve pretty successfuly avoided the most intense part of Bourbon street.
