Since this day played a crucial point in our independence. It used to be called the Day of the Army as well since the army was dissolved it is just Battle of Vertieres. Vertieres is just a place in Haiti. Haitians led by Jean-Jacques Dessalines attacked a strong French-held fort of Vertieres, near Cape Franc;ais (to the north of Haiti) and won a decisive victory over French colonial army under General Comte de Rochambeau and forced him to capitulate the same night. Haitian Ninth Brigade under Franf;ois Capois played a crucial role in the victory. As a result, independent Republic of Haiti was proclaimed on January 1, 1804. November 18 has been widely celebrated since then as the "Day of the Army and Victory'' in Haiti. So, you are invited to take part in this great historical celebration. Marking the 10th straight week of massive nationwide demonstrations and popular-barricade-produced dysfunction, thousands across Haiti marched again on Mon., Nov. 18, 2019 to demand President Jovenel Moïse’s resignation on the 216th anniversary of the Battle of Vertières, the epic and pivotal 1803 clash where barefoot former slaves defeated French colonial troops to win Haiti’s Jan. 1, 1804 independence.

#BlackHistory Catherine Flon: Jean-Jacques Dessalines daughter was the one commissioned by him to make a flag for the newly freed country. Dessalines declared the Island of Hispaniola aka Haiti a free Republic. Those born in Haiti know the story of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who was born in Grande Riviere du Nord, Haiti. The Battle of Vertieres set the pace for Napoleon to back off "The Americas". Bonaparte, was dealt many losses after Haiti revolted. Like the Phoenix, Haiti continues to rise. We must know the culture to retain why we as Haitians are great. We must share the culture and make sure the youth understand it. Experience the culture, travel to Haiti visiting historic sites first hand. All means to touch Haitian culture mentioned help support the progress we all want to see. To Start Follow the Phoenix, @phoenixrefined !!!

The Haitian Revolution
As we should all know, Haiti was once a French colony and by the 18th century, it became France’s richest colony. After the French Revolution, the country’s white population was split by contrasting interests. Nevertheless, both sides upheld the institution of slavery. Black slaves outnumbered whites 10 to 1. There were many attempts of revolts prior to 1791, but during the summer of that year, their attempts finally broke through. On August 21st, a former slave by the name Toussaint l’Overture, led a rebellion against plantation owners. Him and his followers would control a third of the country by the following year. At this point, about 1/5th of the slaves in the country would be murdered along with 3/5th of the whites. Both British and American forces would soon enter the country, hoping to seize the revolts, but ultimately failing. By 1801 Toussaint l’Overture expanded his efforts to the neighboring Spanish colony, the Dominican Republic. He was able to abolish slavery and declare himself the governor of DR. Napoleon Bonaparte, the ruler of France at the time, sent reinforcements to Haiti to capture l’Overture and restore French rule. l’Overture was captured and sent to France where he died in a prison in 1803. One of l’Overture’s generals, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, picked up where l’Overture left off and led revolutionaries into the Battle of Vertieres on November, 18th, 1803. The French were defeated and on January 1st, 1804, Dessalines declared Haiti’s independence and gave it its current name. Haiti became the first Black republic in the world and the second country in the Americas to gain its independence from a European power. The Unites States would not recognize Haiti’s independence until decades later. Nonetheless, the Haitian Revolution remains the largest slave rebellion in history.
We owe so much to the spirit of the people of Haiti. They showed us the way.
