98' Furby Battery Contact Replacement/Repair Guide

What you'll need:

soldering iron, flux, 60/40 leaded solder, related safety equipment

size 1 bit Phillips-head screwdriver

needlenose pliers

new battery contacts (the little metal parts inside the battery compartment that touch the batteries) for AAs (the ones i ended up using i got on ebay and were called "Battery Spring Plate AA Battery Contact Nickel Plate 28mmx12mm for DIY 20 Pcs")

q-tips and very very thin/small disposable make up brushes (i found some marketed as stirrers for drinks or resin)

very thin/sharp pry tool or xacto (depends on how corroded the contacts are! you might not need this)

**If you're using this guide for other electronics: Pay attention to what each contact looks like and where it's placed. Take many pictures both close up and far away to help you later! The point is to try and recreate the contacts as exactly as possible. The most important part is that the batteries "contact" (touch) the metal. If there's multiple parts to the compartment (like on this furby) there should be metal connecting all the parts. This will become easier to understand as you read this guide.

This is xXToh-Loo the VoideaterXx! They've been hanging out on my work table while I worked up to changing their heavily corroded battery contacts.

I'm not gonna go over skinning them since there's so many guides/videos already online. I didnt think of doing this guide until after i finished so the pictures are of new/clean contacts. Sorry for any confusion this causes! step 1. open the battery compartment

step 2. clean whatever you can. i have no pictures of this but i used a combination of scraping the corrosion off with my xacto and cleaning it up with isopropyl soaked q-tips. ive heard white vinegar works really well but ive never used it. if you use white vinegar be careful not to get it inside the rest of the furby! also wipe it down after with water. (making sure its VERY dry before putting batteries inside. use distilled if at all possible. your water may have sediments or metals that could interfere with the batteries)

step 3. bend up the metal that connects the top right side of the contacts. wiggle them until they detach from the compartment. used an exacto or something similar to help with this if they're really stuck. be patient! this might take a while. ****If they really won't budge dont give up! You might need to scrape along the inside edge of the metal [or where you think the metal should be if theyre really rusted/corroded] with your exacto until you dig out a lot of the rust/corrosion. Then try and stab it repeatedly almost like slicing a bagel along the whole side inbetween the metal and plastic. Be careful not to hurt the plastic. Wiggle the exacto side to side all along the edge to break it free.*** Remove and dispose of the old contacts.

step 4. using the xacto and pliers do a similar thing to the other side. there are no metal flaps on this side so it requires more patience but keep going! i promise you'll get it out just be careful. once you get it detached from the back grip the spring with your pliers and pull it out that way.

Step 5. Do the same for the inner right side of the battery compartments. These are unique in that they have a long metal part coming off of the contacts. Remember this for later. You may have to open the casing to remove this part? I cant exactly remember. Just be careful and slow. I go over taking the casing off later on.

Ignore the rest of the contacts for now! Clean everything again to the best of your ability. It's time to take off the casing. There's six screws, two halves of the casing, and one back sensor button. Be careful taking the halves apart! There are speaker wires and I will detail how to do so.

Step 6. Take all six screws and the sensor button out. Keep them together!! They're small and rolly.

Step 7. Take off the casing. Start with the "pet" sensor facing you. Take off the Left casing completely. Crack the Right side a bit until you see the speaker. Grip both wires firmly. Tug it a little to get it out. It shouldn't take much pressure at all. Let the speaker hang and take off the Right casing.

If you tilt your furby up you'll see this spring. be carful with it! mine fell out so you might want to consider taking it out and putting it with your screws.

Pretty much the whole rest of this guide involves soldering. It's annoying but not something that will risk any electronics being destroyed so it's actually a pretty good beginner project.

Step 8. Turn on your soldering iron. Get your safety gear on.

Step 9. Desolder the wires on the side of the contacts and remove the contacts. You might have to really work at these ones! These were the worst ones in mine in terms of corrosion. Make sure there's no corrosion left on the wires. Be careful not to damage the wires with the iron.

Step 10. Clean the compartment again and make sure to get any corrosion on the internals (if there is any! mine didnt have any)

Step 11. Cut the tab off of one of the sets of contacts you have. Keep it and put it aside. Put this in the top Left slot in the compartment. Make sure to put the spring in the - slot and the dome in the + slot.

Step 12. Cut one of the contacts in half along the tab. Keep the tab on the spring side. Put it in the top Right slot in the - side. Bend the tab to secure it.

Step 13. Put the dome from the contacts you cut in half in the Left + slot. Put the tab BEHIND it and bend it to secure them. The domes on the contacts I got don't go out very far so I have to get creative.

Step 14. Cut two more contact sets in half. Cut a strip alll the way down the middle including the tab. Keep these strips for the next step.

Step 15. Solder one strip to the spring side a tabs width inside of the square. The strip should line up with the indent when placed into the compartment.

Step 16. Solder the second strip to the middle of the dome square. Solder another dome ontop of that to ensure the battery makes contact.

Step 17. Place these new contacts into the bottom right of the compartment.

Step 18. Cut another contact in half. Cut another strip off the bottom of a full contact set and THEN cut that contact in half. Solder the strips into the middle of the full spring and dome squares. Place them into the bottom Left of the compartment making sure the strips are through the hole that goes to the internals of the furby.

Step 19. Bend and trim both strips on the inside of the furby. Solder the wires to the bent strips. (Step 9 has a good pic of what its supposed to look like) Shove the second cut dome square behind the soldered in one in the compartment to ensure battery contact.

Make sure the metal contacts touches all the batteries and both long metal ends in the bottom right touches both top right bent tabs when the compartment is closed. It should now work perfectly! Put some batteries in and have fun. : ]

I felt like it was important to create physical model of my D4VE robot so that I could get a rough idea of his shape and through the model I can also explore the potential of making a collectable figure that could be merchandise for my game.

I started this by creating two cylinders, making sure that one is bigger than the other, the larger of the two will be on the top. I made the cylinders by tracing two circles onto thick cardboard and then hot gluing them to a strip of card by each end so that it forms a cylinder, I then repeated this with a smaller cylinder to create the main body of the bot. I then used an exacto blade to create a hole In the back of the bots head, this is where I will put the potato battery.

Once I had the right kind of shape I rounded the edges of the board of with masking tape and then started to layer on tin foil. I unfortunately I didn't get a picture of this before I added the super sculpey to the model.

Doc Brown, Marty McFly, and Time Machine

So this was a toy that I wasn’t expecting to like. 

Playmobil is not a toyline that I have even thought about since I was like 3 or 4 years old.

In fact, until they released the Ghostbusters Playmobil line back in what, 2017? 2018? I don’t recall I didn’t even know they were still around!

But yes, Playmobil has apparently several licenses for certain IPs, and in 2020 they released the ‘Back to the Future” DeLorean with Doc Brown and Marty.

Assembly & Stickers:

Playmobil is, in a way, similar to LEGO where you have to assemble the toy before use. Unlike LEGO however the toy is build. I suppose more like a model in that case.

It was a fun, but simple build.

However I’m not a huge fan of stickers, and some of them required tweezers in order to get them in place.

Doc Brown & Marty McFly & Einstein:

Let’s start with the figures before moving on to the main course.

So, how do I describe the two Playmobil figures? They’re pretty basic, like more basic than Lego Men.

Simple 7P figure, swiveling head, shoulders, wrists, and hips.

No detailed faces, just brown dots for the eyes, and smiley faces, and DOC

Doc Brown is wearing his radiation suit with some nice, painted detail, he wears two watches (removable) and bely with a hook for his tool kit.

Marty is has a bit more additional clothing than Doc, the vest is a separate piece over the body, and the wrist cuffs are removable.

Einstein is a dogo. His head and tail swivels up and down, and he looks happy.

Time machine:

This toy has no business being as awesome as it is.

Not a fan of this black paint splotch on the fender. I’m pretty sure if I use an exacto-knife I cold probably scrape it off, eventually.

Marty, and Doc sit (mostly) well inside the DeLorean. I say mostly because the steering wheel is a bit too big, and it’s sometimes difficult getting the legs and feet to due a limited clearance issue.

On a side note, I would have liked this toy to be compatible for the Super7 BTTF figures, but then again it’s not Playmobil’s responsibility to cater to other toy lines. But it would have been nice is all I’m saying.

Hover feature:

As a bonus The time machine does have its hover mode, as seen at the end of the first movie, and featured heavily in part II. The only thing it’s missing is Mr. Fusion.

Flipping the time machine upside down you’ll notice that each wheel has a catch. Release the catch and you’ll  be able to flip the each wheel to the hover mode, and lock it into place.

The time machine set came with a lot of stuff, aside from the Marty, Doc, and the DeLorean.

I think I’ll buy the Knight Rider set.

Hey I recently acquired some Gen 2 OG furbys and was wondering on how to longify them, can you help guide me?

HOW I DID IT:

Step 1: get yourself a friend

Step 2: I used an exacto blade to cut the zip tie. Skin. You will need to unscrew the lil screws holding the faceplate off (maybe!)

Step 3: Using a computer parts screwdriver set. ( uh you know, for tiny screws) take apart the shell. Crack him like an egg for fun.

Step 4: Snip wires and take apart everything that can be. Snap the battery container off and unscrew the circuit board. This I do for weight control. If your head is too heavy it will not stay up like you want!

Important! I like to keep the gears and the rest in place. This let's you position the eyes and mouth.

Step 5: Now you can pop out the eye chip! I use a needle. There is a little hole you can aim for, but honestly the plastic is so thin and the chip hides any hole you make. You can just push and wiggle your way to popping it off.

Step 6: using an exacto blade snip the thread holding the faceplate to the fur!

The art style used was acrylic paint on 4”x4” canvas. The clock part was made from a disassembled silent ticker bought on the cheap from a Meijer’s, a Tupperware to house the battery box, and core board cut out using an Exacto and superglued to the Tupperware to create a 3D object.

I’m very proud. Took me roughly six months to make this. Been a long time coming.

Construction Process

We started with a quick sketch on what the final product would look like.

Using the size of our phone case and the size of our popsicle sticks in mind we gauged the measurements of the gimbal.

We then drew a diagram that was accurate to the final size of the gimbal.

Then we applied hot glue on the sides of the popsicle sticks and stuck them together. We used the diagram to line up the sticks. Some popsicle sticks were too long and we just cut them down using scissors and brute force.

Extra care was put into making sure the sticks were lined up straight and the diagram was used as a reference. Unfortunately, our structure was too wobbly. To give extra strength we glued another set of popsicle sticks overtop the existing.

Once the main frame was constructed, we placed the phone case in the centre and traced the outline.

The next step was to unravel the fairy lights and glue them around the back side of the gimbal. When we got towards the end, we took the battery part and using the same hot glue, stuck it to the back. Ensuring the orientation of the battery had the switch facing down. That way it would be more accessible.

Then we traced the around phone case onto the front of the gimbal and where the lenses of the camera sits with a pencil. The circles we cut out. This part was a difficult because we needed to cut through both layers of popsicle sticks. We used a drill to try and start the hole, however it proved to do little damage. Alternatively, we used a mixture of an Exacto knife, a Lino cutter and a scissors to all tediously carve a small rectangle to expose the lenses.

Using hot glue, the phone case was glued to the front of the gimbal. Making sure the lens cutouts on the case line up with the rectangle that was just carved.

Construction is complete! Place the phone into the case and record!

the drill we got me was mid-range (and came with a cute bag). i decided to go with a wired/plug-in power drill mostly because the battery powered one dad has is so heavy and hard for me to handle. i come home to find out it is a similar weight to dad's drill even though it needed no batteries. i still like my drill more, though, because part of what made dad's drill hard to handle is that the battery weight was all at the base, so youre always fighting that torque, whereas the weight of mine is all behind the tip. in addition, my drill is so much more powerful than dads. in all fairness, his set is over a decade old and the batteries dont hold juice like they used to. but, hopefully mine wont have that problem and will last me many years

dad wasnt sure about getting me the dremel, but after explaining what i do with 3D printing he understood my use for it. i came home and used it for the spool winder base. i had previously spent a good while trying to sand it down so the cogs would spin, and the dremel finished it in minutes

the box cutter was something i threw on top of the cart, because i dont have one and i cant use my exacto knife set for everything.

this might be the first time ive ever recieved new tools from my parents and not had to scrounge around for second hand or throwaway tools, tools nobody else wanted.

is the last new tool i got also my first one? the needle nose pliars from girlscouts to make jewelry. i used those for everything. its nice to have the right tools for the job.

Now for control

My next step in creating this drone was to create the radio controller for the drone. I felt that this step should come before any more of the flight programs build so that when the drone is programed, I can test changes before having to add extra code to discover these problems. 

For the radio controller I used the body of an old SYMA drone radio controller, an Arduino Leonardo and the potentiometers/ buttons that came with the old body. 

The first step was to disassemble the old controller so that I could examine the layout of the PCB and how I would place objects.  

After examining I have concluded that with the Arduino board on the backside of the PCB, I will be unable to reattach the back-plate/battery bay, so I must use an alternate plan for power. The solution was to use 2 x 3.7v Lipo cells in series to provide power. These can then be taped into a well of space. After soldering the battery live to the switch of the old board, I cut all the old PCBs traces. And then I soldered colour coded wires onto the inputs of the potentiometers and combined the grounds and lives. I then added this code to test the potentiometers.

This didn't work the inputs all stayed low.

after trouble shooting and checking all the connections and re-soldering twice on dogie joints (for 4hrs). I discovered that the old board traces still connected the switch to the processor so it was drawing all of the power. I removed it with some pliers. after this i retried the code and it still did not work as it should have.

At first, I thought that this may be a problem with the relatively low voltage supply for a Leonardo, or a problem with the reference voltage. I however turned after more testing that either the old traces where not properly disconnected, or I missed some likely because the traces where weird with the dark lines being separation between traces and not traces themselves as I had originally believed. Because of this the sample pin of the potentiometers was tied to ground at the same time as to the analogue inputs. After being perhaps a tad aggressive with an Exacto knife and reassembling the connections the code worked and outputted 4 values from 0-1023 relative to potentiometer position. I then looked at attaching the nrf24l01 to give my transmitter transmitter-ness. The tutorial's that I looked at for this step used the Arduino Nano and this was a problem as the architecture and the pin layouts are different so I had to do some additional research to find out which pins I should use. The information I found nettigo(2014) was for the Uno however the Leonardo shares the same ICSP pins so the info was applicable to my build. I then soldered the radio to the board.

After all of this i taped the cells in place and zip tied the Arduino in place (university board so that was only way to secure it).
