“DADDY!” screeched little girl, abandoning her posse of baby sidekicks to race up to him and demand snuggles by the way of throwing her arms upwards and whining loudly.

I giggled at the gaggle of babies, all standing at attention as their leader enjoyed some snuggle time with her chortling daddy. Elizabeth and Katie had both promptly pushed their two beds together before bedtime the night before and today had spread out the contents of their Hunt a Killer mystery box- a manilla envelope with letters written in dark brown-black ink, black and white photographs, a blood stained glove, autopsy reports, witness statements and a white domino face mask stained with dark red fingerprints.

“Okay, so Valentina arrives at the venue and fishes a key out of her bag upon arrival,” Elizabeth read from the thick booklet out loud. Katie located the key and held it up triumphantly- a pretty thing made from thick gold and embellished with a fancy C. “Then she goes into the party and gives the key to the butler who’s at the door.”

“The butler did it,” Katie decided firmly without being fed any more information. “I will die on that hill- the butler is guilty.”

Peter set down the book that he was reading and started to loudly guffaw, needing to remove himself from the crazy in the hospital room.

“Where on earth did you learn that, mo stór?” I wondered as Baby Noah came up in search of some snuggles with his Auntie Mary Claire.

“It’s common knowledge!” Katie looked at me as though I were fifty shades of crazy. “Everyone knows that the butler is always hiding something!”

“Well okay then!” I grumbled, amused by my daughter’s words of wisdom.

Elizabeth coughed, drawing attention back to her narrative.

“After Valentina gives the butler her key, she puts on her mask-” Katie rummaged around before brandishing a feminine peacock mask like a decapitated head war trophy. “And she enters the party.”

Both girls giggled and chattered, happy and content as they worked out the puzzling mystery that was presented into their laps. Elizabeth read the story, practicing regaining her speech back once more while Katie flexed and pointed her toes on her injured foot.

The girls had just reached the part where Valentina found the body when a nurse knocked on the door, carrying trays of lunch for the girls.

“Grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup on French fries!” she announced, wading her way in through the thick crowd of babies to set the trays onto the girls’ bedside tables. “Enjoy your meals!”

Little girl tugged on Aaron’s ear, directing him over to Katie so that she could examine her lunch. The nine year old girl promptly offered her a fry to munch on.

Little girl finished chewing and swallowed before making a face.

“Ickies ick ick,” she said simply.

Baby Tommy, Baby Eve, Baby Noah, Baby Mattie, Baby Teddy and Baby Jojo all wandered over in demand of a fry each.

I giggled at the expression of utter disgust that erupted onto the babies’ faces- Baby Tommy scrunched up his face, Baby Eve spat out her fry, Baby Noah started to cry Baby Mattie and Baby Teddy removed their fries from their mouths and exchanged them with each other and Baby Jojo started to hop up and down in disgust.

“EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW…” they all said in near perfect unison.

“EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW… “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW…”

Peter and James broke, howling with laughter as tears streamed from their eyes.

“I hope you babies are happy with yourselves,” I scolded them, half serious. “You all successfully broke you father and your Uncles James.”

A couple of years ago, we were figuring out how to use the smartphone, figuring out designs consumers would find appealing. Today we are way past that, we are discovering nuance and exact solutions that work best. It is impossible to cover everything since there are new apps being made every single day. But here are the most important trends that we are currently noticing.

  Minimal Interface

  A shift towards User Experience has been emerging within the app design industry. Design has taken a backseat due to the developers understanding the fact that their product should be clear and concise towards their user to ensure the best output an app can give. Stylized and 3D solutions have lost their popularity in favor of flat design which turned out to be the best suited one for modern screens.

  Therefore a simple UI should feature clarity and functionality to the user, taking into consideration the advantages modern screens provide (size, picture quality, color depth). Aspects of a minimalist interface should be incorporated, like big, clear buttons with intuitive graphical representations if available. It’s very important to let your app breathe so make sure you have empty space, don’t clutter your application with useless features, only keep what’s essential.

  Swiping is the gesture of choice

  Apps that had a card-based information feeds have definitely touched upon improving the swipe feature and making it go mainstream. With an increase in phone and tablet size the buttons are now clearer with more room for navigation. In the early days you couldn’t swipe because the screen was literally too small to use with consistency.

  Swiping will most likely be introduces into a variety of functions, ranging from setting up to the general purpose of the app in question. Apps like Twitter, Tinder and Pinterest board have introduced swiping into their feeds with great success. In case of Tinder it became a marketing meme, which is genius on its own merits.

  Keep you colors fresh

  Previously we’ve seen a lot of grays in our coloring pallets. It made sense since they fit really well along white surfaces. Vibrant colors are coming back in style however. We are seeing that with recent UI design solutions through a more active usage of reds, blues and greens.

  Some find it hard to deal with colors, I get that. It’s something that has to be trained. You don’t want to end up on the CrappyDesign subreddit, you really don’t.   VR/AR Takes Form

  If we had a conversation 5 years ago and discussed this topic, I’d tell you that quality VR/AR is far, far away. However, companies like IKEA have developed apps with amazing Augmented Reality, truly showcasing the potential that was hiding all along.

  The same thing happened in the gaming industry as well. Games like Pokémon GO will continue to emerge. The only missing link is optimal gameplay, but I feel like developers are prototyping daily so we are probably months away from such a market-changing product.

  Whatever reality currently holds, the market speaks for itself. Most of the venture capital is pouring in this industry segment. If you want a slice of that sweet digital market pie, I suggest considering VR/AR as they are the moneymakers of years to come.

  Navigational shifts

  If something is quickly going out of fashion, it’s is navigating through app screens. Just by looking at most modern apps, we can safely say that there are three main issues with app design regarding navigational issues.

  What comes to mind as well is one-handed navigation. Screens today are quite large and it feels almost awkward using some models with just one hand. Figuring out ways to engage both hands in a meaningful way will be a difficult task to solve, but could reward the trendsetter.

  Linear navigation requires all users to have no leeway in which they use their app. Everyone must follow a streamlined process from point A to point B, no exceptions. While this is useful for certain products and services it offers little space for innovation. For example, you won’t be able to implement new features due to you user base developing a strong habit of using your app in a certain way.

  Lastly, the dreaded hamburger menu will continue to haunt us. The menu has been accused of disengaging users from app, promoting poor app architecture and honestly, lazy interface design.

  Conclusion

  The app industry surprises me every year. The amount of innovation achieved and money invested into R&D is growing year by year. The market will be evermore transformative and I feel articles like this one will pop up quarterly instead of annually in the future.

Nick Spanos’s Zap Jolts Real Estate With Blockchain-Based Smart Contracts

New York realtors looking to avoid hiccups in their commission payouts can now turn to blockchain-based smart contracts. The first real estate commission split was brokered earlier this summer in Manhattan’s ritzy SoHo neighborhood by New York-based Bapple Realty.

Enabled through data uploaded onto the Zap platform, the seller divvied up a $3,400 commission — paid in Ethereum tokens — to pay the brokerage and the agents involved in the transaction.

Bapple itself is no stranger to blockchain technology and the use of cryptocurrencies. In 2014, the firm agreed to an $18,000 rent and commissions payment with bitcoin. With the current deal, the infusion of blockchain technology within the real estate industry becomes more solidified.

A primary requirement in implementing the blockchain-based transaction included the input of oracles: real world information uploaded into a decentralized application. This is where Zap, founded by Nick Spanos, comes into the picture.

Zap.org, a product of the Synapse Foundation, uses an Ethereum-based ERC 20 token (ZAP) to power its oracle marketplace for smart contracts.  

The opportunity to expand blockchain technology further into the real estate industry this summer came about as a Zap client and a Nordic Blockchain Association board member was looking to find a Manhattan-area apartment. At the time, Zap was conducting beta testing of its Android app for smart contracts.

“We thought this would be a good use case,” Spanos told Bitcoin Magazine in an interview.

Spanos, who also founded Bitcoin Center NYC and Blockchain Technologies Corp., explained that implementing smart contracts guarantees agents receive their agreed-upon commissions at the same time as their broker-fee payment.

“The industry needs smart contracts,” Spanos said. “In a real estate office, many people have disagreements because of informal oral agreements that are subject to people's sometimes-selective memory. However, if their wallet is in the smart contract tied to the deal, it is fixed and immutable. You're either in or you're not. Trust is automated.”

Spanos added that Zap is currently testing an app that will allow real estate professionals to build and customize all types of contracts.

“It will compile them and put them on the blockchain,” Spanos said to Bitcoin Magazine. “It’s a small step in the vast potential for smart contracts, but a huge leap for the entire real estate industry.”

Real Estate: Just “One Small Use Case”

While Spanos describes Zap’s progress in the real estate industry as just “one small use case,” the organization itself continues work on expanding its marketplace to incorporate smart contract-compatible data.

“We have vendors preparing to sell every type of data feed, from political data to meteorological data, that will allow smart contracts to execute trades on futures based on anticipated crop yield.”

Spanos added, “ Zap.org recently partnered with Stox prediction markets to be a provider of consensus-verified data.”

A long-time advocate of Bitcoin and blockchains, Spanos’s enthusiasm for the technology continues to grow.

“When was the last time you heard of a technology that, when you think of any given problem, there's a way that a single technology could be part of the solution? That's how blockchain is the internet, reinvented,” Spanos said.

“The world has a trust protocol, where financial events can be triggered without depending on an intermediary. The trust revolution is the next revolution. The crypto economy will set the internet free from legacy holdovers in banking and government, and now, any form of exchange can be decentralized.”

In May 2018, Zap announced that it had developed a secure supply management and smart contracts DApp specifically for the oil and gas industry called EnergyLedger.

Innit is a wonderful word that can be used everywhere, especially for someone from South London. It basically means "isn't it?" but it has MANY uses. It can be used to mean an agreement, like "I know right?"

"It's fuckin grim in here" - "Innit mate"
