JOKE-OGRAPHY: In modern times, St. Valentine's Day has become a day to celebrate love and affection. As such, children in schools may do arts and crafts like cutting construction paper into heart-shaped decorations -- in other words, "cutting out hearts." In this cartoon, however, Agnes (a character who commonly misinterprets things) mistakenly assumes that "cutting out hearts" means carving the heart organ from living people. So when the priest declares the class will be "cutting out hearts" today, she volunteers to have her own heart cut out to sate the priest's ritual bloodlust and spare her classmates the gruesome fate. She is, of course, wrong, because while we Catholics love sacrifice, we are well known to dislike the heart-carving and child-murder varieties with a certain... passion.
