I’m still reeling from how last night’s episodes lined up perfectly with my headcanons for TF&TS.

In C3E97, we learned that Aeorians created the Pinion of Service using materials from the Abyss. It’s a soul anchor that keeps Dominox, the Grand Demon of Loathing, tethered to Aeor’s engines and ensures that he reforms there if the process of extracting power destroys him. His immortal demon soul reconstitutes endlessly and serves as a key source of energy for the city. The use of black chains and references to oblivion might just be generic demon flavoring, but it’s also reminiscent of Tharizdun, the Chained Oblivion, who is imprisoned and dreams the endless layers of the Abyss, the home plane of demons.

In TF&TS, the premise is that Molly lives so that I could explore what Lucien might have been like as a body-hopping spirit. While working the initial outline, I needed a way to make sure Lucien would actually be a recurring villain and not get Lorenzo’d. I researched a bunch of necromancy spells because they’re all about soul manipulation. The Soul Cage spell was my main inspiration, but it’s a short term spell and can only hold a soul for so long. There was also the fact that (in EXU Calamity) Evandrin Alterra’s native plane was changed to the Astral Sea, but I wasn’t sure if that would work thematically or spell-wise. I figured, you know what, if abyssal anchors could be used to rip tears to the Abyss for the Angel of Irons plot, I bet one could be engineered to root a specific soul to a non-native plane as well. That would mean I don’t need to come up with a way to shift Lucien’s native plane, could stick with the undeath stuff for Molly being a ghostslayer, and it ties all the themes together nicely.

So my fix was that the Somnovem anchored Lucien’s soul to Cognouza, so no matter how many times his undead form was destroyed on the Material Plane, he would reconstitute in the Astral Sea, and then he could return to Exandria to hunt Molly. This was referenced a few times already in chapters 2 and on.

I have not yet explained what powers this mechanism.

The Ultimate Sandman Character Tag List!

I'm still experimenting with different styles of dialogue for Lucien. It's actually taken a ton more thought and planning than I initially expected.

In my headcanon, Lucien would code-switch a lot. It tends to come with the territory for people with disadvantaged backgrounds (Shadycreek Run) that end up getting some sort of education (Orders) and then work with highly-educated people (DeRogna). Everyone I know from my type of background code-switches, so it's just normal for me. I do it without noticing. But it takes so much planning when it comes to writing someone who does that.

How formal/informal?

Degree of correct grammar?

How much slang?

How many Irish localisms in English, and how often?

How much Irish Gaelic (Gaeilge)?

Which regional dialect? (Leaning towards northern dialects)

How much swearing?

How much Infernal?

And then it varies with age, target, and audience in every conversation on top of that.

It's still fun, just way more work than anticipated.

@windsweptinred Yes!!! it's indeed a fascinating aspect and your tags made me think of how truly exceptional is, in Nightmare Country, that Daniel allows the Corinthian to investigate in the waking world (despite Lucien practically constantly propagandising against the Nightmare). Morpheus would NEVER have allowed it! It's true, he puts Madison Flynn near him as a 'control system', but it's actually a great transgression of those very rules in which Daniel believes, as you rightly write, fanatically!

And I also think back to the scene in Azazel's club, how the demon practically puts temptation at his fingertips but the Corinthian does not take it, goes ahead, follows the 'rules' but not in a servile way: following Daniel's rules is a way of asserting his role, in relation to the First and also in relation to Daniel.

Daniel and the Corinthian are united by being an exception, an 'anomaly' (pass me the term) within The Dreaming, and they are also united by the fact that they are each other's exceptions. For you, I will break the rules; for you, I will follow the rules.

What exactly is your definition of Satanism?

An excellent question! One that is quite difficult to answer, really. Satanism, in my eyes, is a category of religion and spirituality, centered around the figure of Lucifer/Satan/the Devil, or another, similar figure - be it another figure from Abrahamic tradition, such as Azazel or (somewhat controversially, due to Jewish claims of cultural appropriation), Lilith, or be it a figure from a polytheistic pantheon which has archetypal similarities to the Satanic archetype, such as Set, Loki, Prometheus, Pan or even Quetzalcoatl. Followers of such deities in the latter case are not necessarily Satanic, but they can be, and these deities can be approached and analyzed through a Satanic lens. Satanism comes in a myriad of varieties. To start things off, there is theistic Satanism, in which these Satanic entities (for theistic Satanists often venerate more than just the Devil, instead turning to other demons or deities as well) are seen as actual beings, able to be communed with. Often, they are seen as guides and mentors to be turned to for advise, and to be given respect, but not blind worship and adoration as one would do with a deity in most contexts, but this varies from case to case, with various practitioners holding different perspectives on this, and with it often varying from entity to entity as well. Theistic Satanists are often independent, individual practitioners, organizing with others from time to time to exchange ideas and perspectives, but otherwise not involved in an organized, religious structure. Their practice is typically deeply occult-oriented, with the practice of magic being a key component of their Satanism. Then, there is also atheistic Satanism. These individuals view Satan as an archetype and symbol, not as an actual entity. While they may practice magic and engage in occultism, this isn't always the case either. They are more likely to organize into official religious groups than theistic Satanists tend to be, and the two most famous Satanic organizations - namely, Anton LaVey's "Church of Satan", and Lucien Greaves "The Satanic Temple", fall into this category. While TST portrays itself as socially progressive, in contrast to CoS's more right-wing 'libertarian' leanings and claims of being apolitical, they in fact have plenty of skeletons in their closet, and fall into many of the same trappings that most if not all organized religions do. @queersatanic are the ideal people to turn to if you want to know more about the many messed up things TST has gotten up to over the years. Despite claims made by the Church of Satan to the contrary, there is no centralized, "official", Satanic doctrine. In my eyes, all these interpretations of the Satanic are valid in their own way, and I reject the idea of there being an official dogma within Satanism. It is, and ought to be, a "find your own path"- kind of faith. That said: There are also some "Satanic" groups that step beyond the acceptable. For example, "Joy of Satan" is a neo-nazi group, preaching antisemitism and white supremacy, and using the veneer of Satanism to draw in a new audience for their hatred. I would not consider them to be a genuine form of Satanism, due to the fact that I strongly suspect their "satanism" is in fact pure opportunism for the most part, instead of rooted in any actual convictions. In addition, in my eyes, Satanism as a faith is deeply rooted in the ideal of justified rebellion against unjustified authority. Given how fascism is the polar opposite of this, any Satanism which gives room to fascism is fundamentally at odds with my personal interpretation of the Satanic. I myself, personally, view Lucifer as the ur-anarchist, and by this point must confess to myself that I view him and other Satanic figures primarily as archetypes and symbols, not actual entities. ... And thus concludes my overly long ramble. I hope that answers the question?
