Furuba autistic headcanons

With it being April, or autism acceptance month, I wanted to finally drop my list of characters from Fruits Basket that I read as autistic! This is based a lot on my own experience, as well as that of other autistics I know or have seen talk online. I hope some people can get something out of it, feel free to tell me what you think 😊, though please refrain from getting upset that I would dare suggest your fave is autistic.

Hanajima

Before becoming able to better control her powers, she would be constantly overwhelmed by the things she heard to the point that she couldn't even really go out in public. This reads a lot like sensory overload.

Constantly picked on in school because other kids thought she was weird. Eventually reclaimed this weirdness and turned it into a whole persona.

Seems to talk usually in a relatively flat tone.

Had trouble socializing with no friends outside her family until middleschool.

Has a very funny, dry sense of humor that I find very similar to a bunch of autistics I know, including myself.

Hatsuharu

Listen. You have seen the funky little man, you have seen the way he talks, the way he acts around others. He is, and I mean this in the best way, a weirdo. I do not know how you could look at him and see a neurotypical.

Once again, like Hana, Haru is funny in a way that feels very autistic.

Very flat, dry, tone delivery. Sometimes just Says Things that make everyone else go huh??? Suuuuper blunt. Doesn't emote facially a lot of the time.

When this man sees a social norm he doesn't get he WILL NOT follow it. Pierces his ears just because his hair got flak, defends Momiji wearing whatever he wants because sometimes y'know the social rules are just dumb and don't make sense. Especially dress codes.

Sometimes says things not befitting the current tone of the situation.

Represses (masks) a lot of his emotions, leading to outbursts that seem uncharacteristic.

His main childhood trauma revolves around adults branding him as "dumb" and ridiculing him. Haru, however, is super smart and wise!! Just in an offbeat way that not everyone may get.

Machi

Reads as very "flat" emotionally to the point that others would call her boring. Also has a flat vocal delivery.

Relies on specific habits or ways of doing things or else she gets super upset (her hatred of imperfection.

Has trauma surrounding adults completely misconstruing her intentions and thinking she's doing something malicious when she's not.

Generally behaves in a way that's hard for others to understand, one of her formative moments with Yuki was him saying he wanted to "see how the world looks" through her eyes.

Once again, trouble socializing.

Tries super hard to please her parents but in the end they still see her as somehow inherently "defective."

Listen. A lot of this one and the last two are mostly vibes, hard to verbally define. You just have to look at them and trust me.

Tohru

Displays behavior very reminiscent of masking throughout the story, a huge part of her arc is about how she hides a lot of herself and has a very controlled persona. I think it would fit very well if she had other autistic behaviors that she suppresed also it helps explain why she is relatively socially adept, it's learned behavior to make people like her more.

Yes she is very good at saying what others need to hear, but especially early on she is pretty blatantly imitating her mother's words. She only gets better at getting through on a more personal level later on (see her with Rin and Akito v. early series Tohru). She does this by relating her own experiences, a very autistic way of showing empathy that often gets us written off as self centered. The way she relays things her mom said could also be seen as this, and she even worries at a few points that she's being insensitive for going on about things like that.

While emotionally repressed she is hyper empathetic and feels other's emotions so strongly she cries.

Her speech patterns are all imitated from her father and she often copies verbal things from others (see Ritchan-san). Noted in canon that people think her way of speaking is slightly off/not befitting of someone her age. Additionally, her father was polite more sarcastically, while she plays it straight and sometimes takes things very literally or fails to get the message, indicating trouble with reading tone. Has numerous strange verbal tics, including saying parts of her internal monologue out loud without context.

Very expressive with her hands including waving them around and flapping them up and down.

Does have a bit of trouble with accidental insensitivity in social interactions, like how she constantly fixates on her mom and realizes that might bug the Sohma.

Has trouble paying attention in school since it doesn't have much to do with her interests

Her only friend until she was a middle schooler was her mom

Has a pretty unique outlook on things compared to others, people seem to think she's pretty eccentric. There's always a "this girl is nice but in an odd way, she's our weirdo and we love her" vibe.

Sometimes has an "inappropriate" emotional response to situations

Has a lot of trouble with change, similar to Akito. Which oh, look at the time, next hc coming up.

But first, a disclaimer. It is cathartic for me to read Akito this way, but with that reading comes the baggage that she would, mayhaps, be showing a more negative side of things... It doesn't bother me since it's a joint hc with other characters and she does develop at the end but yeah, general villain hc baggage. This is in no way me trying to excuse her being The Worst being autistic doesn't absolve you of being able to do wrong . Also, a lot of these points can and do have other explanations related to her upbringing, but things can be for more than 1 reason. With that said, she really strongly comes off as autistic to me, in a way that's sorta hard to explain. I wrote a lot more for her than the other, both because I felt I needed more to convince people and that this headcanon was more sensitive and I needed to be careful in my explanation. Also hey! She's my special interest within a special interest.

Akito

Shown to have a dislike of summer weather due to heat and brightness, could be due to sensory issues in tandem with sickness things. Also covers her ears when people raise their voice sometimes which is partially her trying to shut down opposition but also 🤔 can read a different way. She'd also avoids louder Juuni like Ritsu and Ayame because she can't handle them.

Wears pretty much the same outfit every single day. Said outfit is also pretty loose fitting.

Always seen sitting in a pretty unconventional way. Evidence:

Of course this is also the isolated in a cult thing and there is a level of her purposefully doing things to intimidate but: doesn't follow a lot of social rules (overly touchy with strangers, legit doesn't get that what she's doing is wrong, ect.). Repeatedly confused when people indicate she should act otherwise without explanation. Has a breakdown when this comes to a head and approximately says that "they" shouldn't expect her to know "common sense" if "they" never explained it to her, that the way that she was was her "common sense."

Often talks in a way uncharacteristic of her age when shown as a child in a more faux mature/pretentious way. Might just be the translation and idk how to explain it but her speech as an adult also seems off from what one would normally use in conversation. Additionally, when she tries to fake being friendly in her intro chapter, it comes of as extremely stiff and unconvincing.

Generally displays behavior that could be thought of as childish as an adult, but a lot of this behavior could also read as autistic (covering ears, emotional deregulation and meltdowns, ignorance of basic social norms, ect.). It's also important to note that she knows that this behavior makes her seem younger and more helpless to the older zodiac and uses it as a manipulation tactic. Has issues regarding people treating her like a child or only hanging out with her because of pity. While she does weaponize it, we can tell that this grates on her, as seen with her finally blowing up on Kureno, which is partially triggered by the maids saying some sorta infantalizing stuff about her. Irl, a lot of autistic adults and teens struggle with being infantalized for our behavior generally or treated as little babies that can do no wrong. Even in fandom, you see people doing stuff like jumping to call autistic adult characters, such as Entrapta from Shera, "minor coded." It is also common for us to have at least one bad experience with someone hanging around us out of pity. This is something that really gave me a similar feeling in Akito's arc. She's not a baby and she can understand and do better if she is given the chance to learn and break from all the freaky cult indoctrination she's been subjected to instead of just being constantly enabled. In the end, a lot of her growth is represented by her showing that she is capable of changing and being independent.

Shows particular difficulty with socialization, often sits by herself spacing out at social events. A lot of her fear is rooted in the fact that she doesn't know how normal relationships work, becoming overly reliant on the curse because she doesn't know how to make friends.

Clings desperately onto the notion of being "special" and in some way superior to others to be worthy and to make up for perceived inherent "flaws." It's the nd gifted kid burnout vibes for me.

Easily bothered by things that don't bother others. Feels emotions very strongly to the point of getting physically ill and has bad emotional regulation.

Relatively good at reading others in an analytical sense (though has more trouble when it comes to seeing how they feel about her since she's wildly delusional) but brings up her observations in a very cold, detached way and hurts people even on the rare occasion she didn't mean to. Has extreme trouble connecting to others and understanding their point of view. This makes her come off as pretty unempathetic even though that might not fully be the case. Also thinks that people like Momiji are trying to look down on her when they try to empathize with her. A lot of why Tohru can get through to her is that she manages to convince Akito that she's not condescending by relating shared traits and experiences. As I said earlier, autistics often empathize by sharing their own experiences with someone, and I know I often have an easier time confiding in other autistics because of a fear of being seen as lesser by those that don't understand me. I think the connection between these charachters and the way that Tohru manages to reach Akito like that while others couldn't makes a lot of sense through an autistic lense!

Additionally, when Akito herself gets around to trying to help others instead of just projecting trauma, she tries to reach out to the old maid by relating back to her own experiences. This however, doesn't work.

Has "cold" emotional reactions sometimes even to things that do make her upset. For example, how sort of calm and detached she acted after her father's death can make her seem uncaring. However, we know that this event did mess her up a lot and she is still (poorly) dealing with a lot of grief from the death of her father years later.

Copies mannerisms from others, the most blatant example is with Ren, who she directly parrots lines from as a child to Yuki.

Partly just her posturing, but gestures a lot with her hands when she talks. Also seen several times clutching her hands in her hair.

Deals extremely poorly with the idea of things changing to the point that it is a driving force of the story.

Does not understand when people tease her.

Ect. Ect. Ect. Listen, I could go on for ages but just trust me, the mean gremlin lady is autistic.

Missed Opportunity: Yuki Sohma & Queer Representation in Fruits Basket

I typically don't write these kinds of posts, but I gotta say, as much as I've considered myself a pretty devout Fruits Basket fan throughout the years, after rewatching Fruits Basket 2019 S1 + S2 (and re-reading parts of the manga), I've definitely got some things to say about the execution of my boy Yuki's character arc...

This isn't to say I don't adore certain aspects of his arc. On the contrary - Yuki is perhaps one of the most compelling character studys in all of Fruits Basket. The way his story challenges the absurd, archaic notion that "no one will love you unless you love yourself", confirming to the viewer that you often need external affirmation and support to heal from past trauma, is so poignant, especially to those who have suffered with the debilitating lack of self worth that often accompanies PTSD.

In the end, I find my problems lie with some of the opportunities that may have been missed in failing to canonically substantiate the queer coding inherent to Yuki's teenage experience and relationship with Tohru Honda. While I certainly have nothing against the Yuchi ship - in fact, I think his relationship with Machi serves as an opportunity for Yuki to impart the same affirmation, love and compassion Tohru afforded him - having him end up in a heterosexual relationship (of which there is already a needless glut within the Fruits Basket universe) just leaves me feeling bereft and somewhat...shortchanged. It's as if, in this piece of narrative fiction so fixated on conveying the complexities and nuances of human connection, there is a whole swath of relationships deemed tangential to this deep-dive into the human experience. Yes, I acknowledge the existence of fleeting representations of the queer experience, such as Hatsuharu's love for Yuki - however, this is always represented as a character's past state - a secondary setting, not their default. The inevitable, seemingly inescapable curse for all the characters of Fruits Basket is not remaining by Akito's side forever - frankly, it's heteronormativity. Every single character, even those that are heavily queer coded (ex. Ayame, Hatsuharu, Uotani, and yes, our boy Yuki), end up in heterosexual relationships by the end of the manga. Now, it is important to state, emphatically, that this post is not meant to undermine or erase their possible characterization as bi or pansexual - rather, the sheer volume of characters exhibiting this trajectory of inevitable heterosexuality seems to portray the queer experience as ephemeral - incapable of being brought to fruition within this universe.

And Yuki is perhaps one of the most egregious examples of missed opportunity for LGBTQ representation. The whole notion of Yuki subconsciously adhering to heteronormative expectation, initially contextualizing his feelings towards Tohru as romantic, rather than familial, is so emblematic of what many queer people, particularly men, face as teenagers and young adults. Yuki, once aware of the nature of his feelings, admits to feeling somewhat embarrassed by the revelation - a revelation that seems in line with ego-dystonic sexual orientation, wherein the individual's sexual or romantic preferences are dichotomous to the idealized (often heteronormative) image they aspire to. Yuki's queer coded experience is further corroborated by Yuki's discomfort with his position as the subject of romantic fantasy for the vast majority of the female school population.

All this being said, I have no particular stance on who he should have ended up with in the end (though I do feel, narratively, that Kakeru would have been a natural choice - but again, I'm not particularly concerned with the endgame ship). In fact, I feel having him single, with a new, chosen family, that accepts him for who he is, would be equally poignant, given the weight Fruits Basket consistently places on acceptance, it's role in overcoming trauma and, consequently, achieving happiness and fulfillment in life. It also would have been nice to have one character achieve happiness solely through this form of human connection, since I also feel Fruits Basket places far too much emphasis on romantic relationships by the end of the series.

Again, I want to mention that this post isn't meant to throw shade at any specific ships - particularly Yuchi. On the contrary, as mentioned earlier, it's good story telling to have Yuki become an emotional pillar for someone who has also struggled with family trauma. There are also many other endgame heterosexual relationships in the series that make absolute narrative sense (lookin' at you, Kyoru). However, given the sheer volume of characters who showed some degree of queer coding that inevitably ended up in heterosexual relationships, I feel that having Yuki's arc embody the true queer experience, canonically, would have ameliorated this lack of LGBTQ representation, while also working seamlessly with his entire character progression throughout the story.

Then again, I'm an obscure weirdo with like, two reblogs on my Fruits Basket blog, who simply wanted a moment to yell my grievances about a fictional character into the ether, so take all of this with a grain of salt.

Ship your ships, everyone. I just wish Fruits Basket had been a little better about saying #lgbtqrights, especially for my boy Yuki.

tohru - color-coded notebooks by subject, always has a few tampons in her pencil case just in case literally anyone in class needs them, tissue packs, her pocketbook/wallet thing with pic of mom

yuki - one (1) pencil, an assortment of loose nuts, inhaler but its really dirty, loose papers and beat up notebooks, and two dictionaries 

kyo - deodorant, a bottle of advil, extra shirt, those notebooks with folders inside of them because kyo is ~organized~

haru - a lighter, over-ear headphones, always keeps a bunch of those tiny yogurt drinks in there to stave off pre-lunch hunger

momiji - hair product, candy, rotating plushy of the day, keys with waaaaay too many keychains on it

rin - a water bottle and a protein bar just in case, pocketknife she’s never used

shigure - cigarettes + lighter, wallet, always throws a book in there

akito - does not carry a bag. makes shigure kureno or hatori carry their phone. doesnt even carry a wallet 

ayame - needle + thread, seam ripper and snips, loose glitter, hand warming packets, a comb

hatori - antacids, cigarettes, breath mints, excedrin 

kureno - accordion folder, laptop, phone charger, wallet that always has 5000 yen cash in it

ritsu - klonopin, hairbrush, an assortment of cute handkerchiefs 

kagura - earbuds, hand mirror, necklaces that she thinks she lost but actually put in her bag and forgot about, canned coffee

kisa - gel pens in every color, sticker sheets, an actual hard plastic pencil case, mini mogeta plushy

hiro - a can of axe, his retainer, crumpled up notes his mom put in his lunchbox 

uo - lactaid, facemask, zippo that’s mostly for show

machi - it’s a gamble as she just grabs whatever off the floor and brings it with her. can range from jar of coconut oil, a key to a lock that she lost like a year ago, and a half-eaten bagel

nao - individual folder and notebook for each class, mini mag light, stress ball

people who think yuki sohma is straight get help!!! he might have been your anime boyfriend when u were 13 but that doesnt make him straight <3 never has a character had this many like multilayered levels of accidental gay coding like thats the most insane part is that natsuki takaya writer of all this is one of you.. but its like first its not even about him having some kinda gay vibes or whatever like thats part of it but the first and most overwhelming piece of evidence is how besides like utena (known gay) i have never seen a character so clearly articulate the ways in which we try and force our feelings into neat heterosexual boxes out of this desire to feel normal like the way yuki was literally never into tohru but felt he had to interpret those feelings of closeness through the lens of the societal expectation of heterosexuality and he just like explains all this and ur just sitting there like ok.. let alone the way hes sooo resentful of ayame who i think u would have to be deliberately stupid to think is straight and like the relative freedom he has and how hes so comfortable expressing himself and getting away from the family like also the added layer of this is just me adding my own take but he really hates his brother and his brother is gay so he wouldnt wanna be like him!! let alone the fact that all those girls at his school see him more as a dress up doll and like a far off fantasy who will never reciprocate like.. and then thats not even beginning to get into the fact natsuki takaya herself blatantly hit copy on yuki and kakerus entire relationship and pasted it onto yuki and machis so ur like ok so you acknowledge this kind of relationship could be romantic you are admitting it could be romantic?? truly the entire thing boggles the fucking mind <3

Furuba characters x hogwart houses au????

hiii anon thanks for the ask, tbh i’m not the hugest fan of hp but these are my takes on this ;;

gryffindor — i’m 100% confident that kakeru, kyo, kagura, and arisa would belong in this house. they embody the whole concept “gryffindor”; being courageous, daring, driven by their emotions, but also sometimes seen as being reckless. haru would fit in this house, too, being very brave and self-sacrificing (plus, his “black haru” persona could be tied to the reputation that the members of gryffindor are short-tempered). also, gryffindors have also been mentioned to be self-righteous and arrogant, with no regard for rules. so i feel like hiro, maybe even akito, could belong in this house too?

hufflepuff — i would sort tohru, kisa, kureno, momiji, and ritsu to this house! they all are incredibly friendly, kind, hard workers, and impartial. despite their respective issues and traumas, all of them have a strong moral code and a sense of right and wrong. they are also accepting of other people (even if they aren’t always accepting of themselves).

ravenclaw — ravenclaws are known to be logical, diligent, rational, and “inclined to dismiss certain social expectations for the sake of satisfying their own intellectual curiosity”. they also prizes learning, wisdom, wit, and intellect. so i would sort kyoko, yuki, saki, machi, and hatori to this house. also, because ravenclaws pride themselves on being original in their ideas and methods, i can see ayame being a ravenclaw too.

slytherin — slytherins are cunning, resourceful, determined, and ambitious people who tend to take charge and possess strong leadership skills, all while having a “certain disregard for the rules“. they are also very loyal and loves deeply and passionately. for this reason, i would sort shigure and rin into this house (but i feel like hatori and yuki would suit as slytherins as well).

(this is off topic, but people like ren and the old sohma maid would definitely be like professor umbrigde in this au lmao)

Okay so my initial thoughts on Gender in Fruits Basket (2019)

- damn there's a lot of crossdressing guys in this family.

- Momiji wears the girls school uniform (and it's treated as an example of his childishness/his immature aesthetic.)

- Yuki gets peer pressured into wearing a dress at the school festival because the girls (and guys) think it's attractive. Yuki gets called pretty and feminine a lot. He does not enjoy it.

- Ritsu is ??? Wears entirely women's clothing and speaks (in English) with feminine diction and tone, the other Sohmas treat this character as a crossdressing man but I definitely get trans woman vibes from Ritsu. Ritsu donates an entire collection of kimono to a cousin at the end of the story and is shown wearing masculine clothing and short hair for the first time.

- for Momiji and Ritsu, dressing in women's clothing is narratively linked to a lack of maturity. In each case, someone asks "what will you do when you have to get a job/grow up?" and these characters are expected to grow out of this in order to become serious adults. This feels icky to me.

- whatever is going on with Ayame, Yuki's brother. He flirts heavily with other men and runs a boutique for crossdressers, I think? He also ends up with a woman at the end of the series (Mine, who seems to also be into women?) Whatever their relationship is supposed to be, imho its peak mlm/wlw solidarity. These are queer people.

- Akito is shown in sexual/romantic relationships with both Shigure and Kureno, several episodes before

- Akito is revealed to be a woman who was presenting as a man in a conspiracy to make everyone believe the head of the family was a man for ??? Reasons Unclear. She apparently does consider herself a woman, or at least decides to explore femininity at the end of the series, after she is freed from her place in the Zodiac curse.

- Hatsuharu says Yuki was his "first love", much to Yuki's embarassment. I think this is cute tbh.

There's definitely a lot of queer sexuality and gender themes here, and they all get nicely wrapped up into gender conforming m/f pairs at the end which is certainly a choice. Makes me think about the Hayes Code in American media which used to require queer characters to either die or become heterosexual by the end of a story. I wonder what Japanese social contexts might shed light on the story choices here.

I just finished watching the Fruits Basket (2019) anime, which is funny because I had somehow avoided reading/watching this piece of media for the last two decades despite it being the 2nd most popular English-translated manga.

There sure is a lot of gender in this thing, huh?

Also, this is why it makes me so angry that Momiji’s story doesn’t get a satisfactory ending at all.

All his life, Momiji has been treated as a ‘supporting character,’ a threat to other people’s happiness, rather than his own person, who deserves his own life and his own happiness. He loves his family, but is forbidden to even let them see him because the very sight of him might hurt them. His dearest ambition is to be a violinist, and yet his father makes him quit his lessons because his sister wants to learn the violin.

So at this point, Momiji is convinced that he doesn’t deserve to have nice things himself. When he falls in love, he only sees himself as an obstacle to Kyo and Tohru’s relationship. He doesn’t even think he has the right to confess to Tohru, because Kyo is in a worse position and needs her more, right?

I would have wanted to see Momiji being valued and prioritised by someone, and more importantly learning to value and prioritise himself. He’s always been taught not to complain or try to help himself, because other people have it worse and deserve more consideration. And the manga ends with... him walking off into the sunset, accepting that his fate is to play second fiddle?

Momiji is one of the kindest, bravest and most considerate characters in the story. He was the first of the Sohmas to truly open up to Tohru, spend time with her, and unabashedly shower her with kindness and affection. He was also the only member of the zodiac who ever managed to hold his ground against Akito to protect her. I’ve always privately thought Momiji deserved to end up with Tohru, but even if he didn’t, he deserved to learn to value himself and find happiness. He deserved to see himself as an equal contender, and at the very least tell Tohru how he felt.

I can’t help but feel that this is part of a pattern with Takaya-sensei’s treatment of queer and queer-coded characters. Ayame’s queerness is treated as a joke, Ritsu’s as a failing, Momiji’s as something childish to grow out of. It is constantly hinted that Yuki is gay (his tendency to idealise relationships with girls but distance himself from them, and the sense that he doesn’t quite fit in with his peers and is hiding something from them... and most importantly, Kakeru), but he still somehow ends up with a girl. All the queer characters are either scrambled into cishet m/f relationships, or... are sidelined.

Momiji deserved better!

THIS. THIS here is the reason Momiji’s dad is near the very top of my ‘shitty fruba parents’ list.

I’ve always instinctively hated Momiji’s dad, but not been able to dissect exactly why, so here’s my attempt:

First of all, I don’t really blame him for going ahead with the decision to erase his wife’s memories, it was definitely a difficult decision, but seemed like their only option at the time. But his actions after - god, they make me think he really is the scum of the earth.

Before he allows her memories to be erased, he promises this to Momiji:

But!! What do we know that he does? He ditches Momiji to the main estate (Momiji is said to have been raised by the main estate people and occasionally Hatori), and warns and presumably berates Momiji every time he is even WITHIN SIGHT of his mother and Momo.

How DARE he say he loves Momiji!!! Are these the actions of a father who loves his son?? You BET if I had to do something half as devastating as derive a boy of all his family EXCEPT ME, I would spent EVERY SINGLE SPARE MOMENT trying to make up for it. But what does Momiji’s dad do? He is so desperate to cling to his “happy family life” that he sees his son as nothing more than a “threat”, and ONLY interacts with him if it’s to warn him away from HIS OWN MOTHER AND SISTER.

It’s also extremely disgusting how he uses kind words to guilt trip his son. All these words about how he “loves” Momiji and is “really sorry” serve only make MOMIJI feel terrible about his actions, and NOT because his dad actually means any of the stuff he says. Most of the parents in fruba are shitty, but they’re shitty in obvious, outward ways. Momiji’s dad is shitty in a way that garners sympathy from both the viewers and the in-world characters, when in fact he is JUST AS CRUEL for essentially abandoning and neglecting his kid, and guilt tripping him for even WANTING a relationship with his family. He’s cruel in a way that doesn’t allow Momiji to retaliate, because the poor kid probably doesn’t even realise his father is mistreating him, just because of his carefully chosen, placating words.

I just can’t STAND watching this bastard have his perfect home life whilst he offloads all the burden to his fifteen year old son.
