simple skincare routine (+ product recommendations based of skin types)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hi angels! skincare has been a big passion of mine since i was around twelve and began to develop some hormonal skincare issues. these really made me insecure and i still struggle with my skin. but being consistent and developing my routine, working out my skin type, eating with my skin as a focus and trial and error has got me to a place where im much much happier with my skin - and id love to share some tips and products with you!! remember your skin is exposed to so much and such a delicate part of your body, treat it with the love and respect it deserves. ˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
firstly: figuring out your skin type
im not exaggerating when i say the basis of a good skincare routine is knowing your skin type. it makes it easier to buy products, work out what your skin needs and how to achieve the look you want.
dermatologists agree that there are four skin types:
oily (skin produces more oils and sebum).
dry (produces less oils and sebum).
normal (produces a normal amount of oils and sebum).
combination (areas of skin which are dry and areas that are sebum heavy/oily).
so…
how do you work out your skin type?
well there are two easy at home methods!
watch and wait (requires cleanser): wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. wait for half an hour or so and observe your skin. shiny all over = oily. tight and perhaps flaky = dry. shine in t zone = likely combination. hydrated and comfortable but not too oily = normal.
blotting sheet method (requires blotting sheets and cleanser): wash face with gentle cleanser, pat dry and waist for half an hour or so. press blotting sheets to chin, cheeks, forehead etc and examine the oil left on the sheets. lots of oil = oily. almost no oil/no oil = dry. oil mostly in t zone = combination. minimal all over face = normal.
˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
secondly: building a routine
now youve worked out what skin type you have it’s time to build a routine! i personally have combination skin that verges more on the dry side.
my am and pm skincare routines look like this…
am: cleanser, ice face, oil face and do gentle gua sha routine, moisturiser and spf. applying facial sanitising spray regularly throughout the day.
pm: double cleanse, ice face (only if feeling puffy/sore), moisturiser, 1 - 2 spot treatments and sanitise face.
am products:
cerave hydrating cleanser.
corsx moisturiser (great for dry and spot prone skin, little goes along way).
la roche posay spf 50+.
jojoba face oil.
vital baby face spray.
pm products:
la roche posay effclar duo.
avene hydrance aqua cream.
two over the counter spot treatments.
you may need to cleanse your face more/less, use less moisturiser etc. developing your skin care routine is through trial and error, just be observant of your skin and take notes on any effects or changes a product seems to have.
˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
thirdly: product recommendations
here’s a list of some product recommendations! some i have personally tried (they will be starred), others are popular ones based of your skin type loved by many.
cleansers
dry: cerave hydrating cleanser ⟡
oily: la roche posay effclar duo cleanser ⟡
combination: neutrogena skin balancing purifying gel cleanser
normal: paulas choice perfectly balanced foaming cleanser.
toner
dry: laneige cream skin toner
oily: body shop tea tree toner ⟡
combination: innisfree green tea toner
normal: la roche posay toner
moisturisers
dry: corsx moisturiser ⟡
oily: glow watermelon pink juice moisturiser
combination: byoma moisturising gel cream
normal: la roche posay cicaplast baume B5+ ⟡
spf
la roche posay spf 50+
black girl sunscreen
supergoop unseen sunscreen
˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
thank you for reading angels! feel free to give any skincare product recommendations or reviews. im planning on doing an in-depth personal skincare routine post soon. hopefully you enjoyed!!
love, m.

Avene Aqua Cream In Gel Review
Avene hydrance aqua cream in gel is a perfect hydrating solution for your daily skincare. This is formulated in Japan and made in France. You can use it as a day cream in the daytime, a sleeping mask in the nighttime and around your eyes as eye contour.
My opinion about Avene hydrance optimale:
I have been using Avene products for a long time. It has an affordable skincare range for all and the skincare products can be easily procured from online web stores. I feel that every product does not suit my skin type as I have sensitive skin. But when I came in contact with Avene range of products I noticed that the products have been made with preciseness so that they can suit every skin type.
To be specific about avene hydrance optimale aqua cream in gel, I must admit that the gel formula has made this cool and lightweight. I love the texture of the product which works great as a makeup base. The light fragrance of the cream suits my personality very much. It does not anyhow irritate my skin. The packaging of the product is nice and it provides a hygienic application option to the user.
Tumblr media
Why do I prefer avene hydrance optimale aqua cream in gel?
I enjoy the presence of thermal spring water in it which makes it a cool moisturizer. It is perfect for my skin as it is very light. This is a very gentle moisturizer that one can apply any time of the day. I use this after applying Avene cleanance gel on my face so that I can get a more soothing effect on my face for the whole day. After applying the moisturizer I am all set to put my makeup on. It has helped to lessen the redness and itchiness of my skin that I used to get before because of my sensitive skin. my skin stays hydrated for a whole day long and it does not feel any dryness from within. I had acne before for which I used several creams of renowned brands which were of no use. Then I found this and the burst of hydration I suddenly felt after the first application that I was super amazed. Now my skin is safe from the breakouts and it stays hydrated all day long. I would recommend this to the girls who have sensitive and dry skin.

what do u think about the brand avene?
my opinion of pretty much every french pharmacy brand i’ve tried, be it avène, bioderma, la roche-posay, etc., is essentially the same: great basic products on the pricier side but usually worth it for the high-quality, well-researched and elegant formulations, especially if you have skin conditions or sensitivities, but if you’re looking for high percentage actives to dramatically change your skin they’re not really the first place i’d look. also, they tend to be quite boring and clinical-feeling. I love putting medical research above gimmicky ingredients, but if i’m paying that much, can’t a girl get some aesthetically pleasing packaging at least?
avène in particular have one of my fave summertime moisturizers which i love mixing in with foundation, which is the hydrance optimale UV light hydrating cream. not enough SPF on its own, but always good to layer with a proper sunscreen for higher protection, too.

Skin and body care products I’m currently using:
Porefessional; almost empty I guess, I don’t use it daily. I don’t think I’ll repose this once it’s empty, I want to try other products I have on stock.
Vital Just facial cleansing gel; this is my favorite from this products, I use it almost twice a day. It’s not my only facial soap but I’ll use it till it’s empty and, if I could, I would replace it. The only problem is that it’s a little expensive.
Avene Hydrance; I have a lot of Avene products and this one is not my favorite, but I use a lot of moisturize daily so I’ll focus on this one.
WoW body lotion; I’ve got this from a hotel, but it’s not bad at all. Probably this will be my first empty of the year.
Hace Halit hand, face and body cream; this one is from Jordan, I really like it but maybe I have to wait till autumn to continue using it. Anyways, i really like this product so maybe it won’t last that much.

Could you please share your skincare routine with us? I know you've answered this before, but I couldn't find it in the search bar... I'm looking for products that help brighten skin, and I was wondering if you had any suggestions. I'm also looking for a nice lightweight moisturiser. Thank you!
Sure! I actually just switched it up a little bit, so I'm happy to share what I've been doing. Just for background information, my skin is normal-dry, generally pretty unproblematic, and I live in a Mediterranean subclimate, so my skincare routine is mostly focused on hydration and sun protection.
Morning:
Bioderma Hydrabio H2O micellar water (cleanser)
50 Megumi Morning UV Protection Cream (moisturizer plus SPF 50+ PA++++)
Evening:
Bioderma Hydrabio H2O micellar water (cleanser)
CosRX Advanced Snail 92 All in one Cream (moisturizer)
Pixi Glow Tonic 5% Glycolic Acid
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion.
I cycle between those last two, so I don't use them every night. That means that I'll cleanse, use the Pixi Glow Tonic, and moisturize one night, and the next night cleanse, use The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion, and moisturize, and then I'll do two days where I just cleanse and moisturize. This gives the skin time to recover so the products can do their job.
Every skin routine should have a cleanser, a moisturizer, and an SPF. Once you have that down and have been using those products for a while, you can think about adding in other products for specific skin concerns.
As far as lightweight moisturizers go, try a gel or lightweight lotion. If you want one with SPF in it, try:
CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion AM SPF 30
Olay Complete Defence Daily UV Moisturising Lotion SPF 30+
CeraVe Ultra Light Moisturizer + SPF 30
Cetaphil PRO Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30
If you want just a regular moisturizer, try:
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel
Hada Labo Tokyo Skin Plumping Gel Cream
CosRx Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream
Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion
Bioderma Sensibio Light
Avene Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Cream Light
CeraVe Baby Lotion
Getting a "bright" look is a little bit more complicated. Azelaic acid, vitamin C, retinoids, and AHAs all may help even your skin tone and make it look brighter.
You could consider adding one of the following products to your routine:
The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% (this one is probably your best bet)
The Ordinary 0.2% Retinol, 0.5% Retinol, & 1% Retinol
Garden of Wisdom Majik C Serum
The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% (23% L-AA)
The Inkey List 30% Vitamin C Suspension (30% L-AA)
Pixi Glow Tonic (5% GA) (F)
Paula's Choice AHA products (5%, 8%, and 10% GA)
CosRx AHA 7 Liquid (7% GA)
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution (7% GA)

ALEXA’S BIRCHBOX VOL. 1
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know about Birchbox, the beauty subscription service that sends you curated samples every month based on a fleshed out profile they help you create. I’ve heard sooo many great things about the service, but I was hesitant to sign up because a) I thought it was going to be expensive and b) I thought they would send one-off products that they assume will work for everyone. Well….I was wrong. But I’m okay with being proven wrong when the outcome is positive! This is actually the third box I’ve received (I got two boxes in October for some reason???), and I’m going to break down some of the products from all three boxes that I absolutely loved and some products that I could have done without.
Tumblr media
DAVINES Love Shampoo
I avoid shampoo like the plague. My hair is naturally dry as f*ck and shampoo makes it even drier, so I condition as much as I possibly can. But this shampoo...wow. In my 23 years, I’ve never used a shampoo that made my hair feel like silk after rinsing it out. My hair is also naturally frizzy as f*ck, and this helped control that, even in humid weather. It’s formulated for frizzy and coarse hair (of course) and there’s a ton of olive extract, which is amazing for scalp health. 10/10, definitely buying this.
Tumblr media
STILA Huge Extreme Lash Mascara
MY VICE!!!! I swear I’ve tried at least 100 different mascaras in my life-- this one is top 5. I love all-in-one mascaras because they just make life easier. My natural lashes are pretty long and curly as it is, but one coat gave me DRAMA. The brush is little wild and the formula tends to clump if you don’t wipe off some of the excess. It’s not a huge downside though, because the results are ridiculous. I probably won’t buy this again, but it holds a solid place in my favorite mascaras ever.
LAQA & CO. B’lighter
Thank you, Birchbox for introducing me to this dope ass brand. First impression: the packaging was adorable and the color inside was a beautiful peachy-pink. And then I put it on my face...holy shit. It’s essentially half blush-half highlight, so naturally I was gonna love it. It’s perfect for a natural, healthy glow, you know “lit-from-within.” It’s really nice and I highly recommend.
KLORANE Shampoo with Mango Butter
It has sulfates….so that’s a no for me. I just ranted about how dry shampoo makes my hair feel, I can just tell this wouldn’t work for me. It smells amazing, though!
Tumblr media
AVENE Hydrance Serum
Finally!! The chance to use this French drugstore brand I’ve been eyeing for months!! They sell this at Duane Reade, which has lowkey become a high end pharmacy over the past few years??? I guess it’s always been, but their cosmetics section is usually really intense now. In any event, this serum is lovely. I put it on before bed for extra hydration while I sleep. My skin is really bouncy and soft after just a few uses. It smells nice too. It reminds me of my aunt’s old house in Connecticut: sweet, clean, and comforting.
OUAI Rose Hair & Body Oil
This stuff is fabulous. Normally, I stay away from oils because they’re….well, too oily. This one absorbs really nicely into your skin. I was skeptical to use it in my hair, but I put just a dab right after straightening and it tamed my flyaways nicely. It smells delicious, it feels delicious, 100% would buy.
[comfort zone] Hydramemory Cream Gel
I’ve been wearing this $60 moisturizer under my PMR for a few days now and it’s everything. Lots of hyaluronic acid (if you know me, you know I love me some hyaluronic acid) and moringa oil. The texture is delicious and it melts into my skin without any greasiness, plus it looks beautiful under a thin layer of PMR. Sometimes products like this are worth the price tag.

A Top Influencer Manager Shares Her Beauty Secrets
Brunela (@BruCampi): a 27 year old Brazilian-Italian living in London, who is a Campaign Manager at Influencer. Yes that means rather wonderfully she does make a living watching a whole lot of Youtube videos and putting her thumbs to good use on Instagram. Much like her job, Brunela has a cool and slightly unusual approach to beauty products; including no less than three highlighters in one application and skipping facial cleanser in the A.M and a no mascara rule... "I am obsessed with all things fashion, makeup and skincare so writing a bit about my favourite beauty products and why I like them felt like the most fun thing ever, so do forgive me for writing more than my fair share of words.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Living in Brazil for the vast majority of my life - the part of the country where I grew up in (sea-facing southeast, and no, not Rio) has an average of 13 summer months a year - I exaggerate, but you get the idea and as such my skin was very oily. As such I spent my teenage years religiously washing my face in an attempt to make it a little drier. I mean, come on, a "glowy" complexion wouldn’t work all too well with my early 2000's heavy black eyeliner, now would it? Since moving to the UK, my skin has shifted completely from very oily to combination, and now it can be dry during the colder, winter months (my 15 year old self would be shocked). Such changes, combined with growing older and my maturing skin, have helped me to establish the skincare and makeup routine I have at the moment.
I don’t typically wash my face in the morning, so after my shower I just use my toner (it varies from La Roche Posay Effaclar Exfoliating Lotion, Pixi Glow Tonic or Acqua Alle Rose Roberts Classical Distilled Water - I love them all equally) and then I apply La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Gel Dry Touch Cream with SPF50 under Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre. I always use the sunscreen under my moisturiser because otherwise the clash of textures ruins my make-up.
I wear foundation everyday - MAC Face and Body Foundation; I like my skin to look like my skin but slightly better and this does exactly that, with a dewy finish that I love. I couple this with NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer (I've had mine for almost two years now and it is still going strong. Next I apply two creamy highlighters with my fingers: NARS Copacabana, quickly followed by MAC Cream Colour Base in Shell (Glossier Haloscope could never - sorry not sorry!).
I like to team MAC Bronzing Powder and NARS Dolce Vita as a blush - Dolce Vita is a few shades deeper than Orgasm and as such perfect for medium/olive skin tones, it just so happens it’s my favourite blush ever. I go strong on my cheeks because I rarely bother with eye make-up; often it is just a slick of Charlotte Tilbury eye pencil along the lash line. Right now I’m going through a mascara ban throughout the week, Jeanne Damas got me into the eyelash-curler only look and I’ve been loving it. If I am using mascara, I will always go for the Lancome Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara - it is the only one that holds my lashes curled for the whole day. I finish my look with a little of NARS powder in Flash (I do not recommend, I am only using it as it was pricey and I want to use it up, rather than waste it) and the Becca Highlighter in Moonstone, which is dreamy. Yes, I will leave the house at 8.30AM with three different highlighters on my face and zero shame.
My night time skincare routine is one of my favourite bits of the day: I remove my makeup with a balm cleanser (often the Body Shop Chamomile one or equally coconut oil does the trick) then I use
Sensibio by Bioderma Mild Cleansing Foaming Gel (which is lovely and gentle), followed by my toner again. I rely on a few moisturisers, sometimes old school Nivea, y'know the one that comes in a tin? Or it may be Avene Hydrance Hydrating Cream teamed with a sheet mask - it really just depends on how I’m feeling. I like to with face massage every now and then but not with a Jade Roller, rather I just use my hands with some movements I’ve picked up from this video (it is in Portuguese but you can mute and still easily pick up a few steps).
I'm not overly fussy with my hair-care, it really is as simple as whatever Shampoo is available and then the Klorane Dry Shampoo for my fringe. My skin may not be oily anymore, but hair sure is. It goes without saying that I am not dermatologist nor a make-up artist goes, everything I know has come from trial and error and getting to know myself - which comes with age and experience. However if I can pass on one universal and easy tip, it would be to please wear SPF on your face - 50-something year old you will thank you!" - @BruCampi

Skincare Basics Oily VS Dry Skin
Tumblr media
Today I’m going to go more in-depth on dry skin and oily skin. This will be focused mostly on different ways and products you can use to care for your skin.
Disclaimer: I’m not an expert so not everything here will work for everyone. Results may vary.
Tumblr media
PART 1: DRY SKIN
If you have dry skin your skin will feel tight and there will be flaking on your face. You will have invisible pores and possibly some wrinkles even though you’re young. I said to use soap-free cleansers and moisturizer and avoid long, hot showers and harsh cleansers. All that is true but now, I’m going to add more to the list and give you more of an explanation.
Tumblr media
MOISTURIZER:
If you have dry skin, moisturizing is very important. If you have dry skin, you will often have allergic reactions to products and it’s recommended that for moisturizers you should use creams instead of lotions because they contain more oil and are thicker. Moisturizer will help your skin freshen up and be more vibrant if you find the right one.
PRODUCT IDEAS
Nivea Soft Moisturizing Cream
This cream contains vitamin E and jojoba oil and it absorbs and hydrates your skin fast. It also doesn’t feel super oily. I personally use this because dry skin is my skin type and it really helps. It works for all skin types as well so this can work if also you have combination skin.
Eucerin Dry Skin Replenishing Cream
This cream has 5% urea, which helps hydrate and restore your skin. Moisturizers which contain urea help reduce your skins water loss. It’s very light and not very oily. It was also featured on the Dr.Oz Show!
Avene Hydrance Rich Hydrating Cream
This cream gives long-lasting hydration and helps prevent water from evaporating off your skin. It also helps restore and rebalance dry skin, which is the skin type it’s made for.
AVOIDING HARSH CLEANSERS
If you have dry skin you should try to avoid any products containing benzoyl peroxide as it reduces the amount of oil your oil glands produce.
SHOWERING
Taking showers with very hot water for a long amount of time is something you should try not to do, unfortunately. The hot water will get rid of the oil on your skin and stay in the shower for a long time will dry out the skin on your whole body! When you’re in the shower use lukewarm water and limit your time to 5-10 minutes. It saves water and your skin will thank you.
HUMIDIFIERS
Putting humidifiers in your room and in your living room can really help your skin. Humidifiers add moisture into the air and restore the humidity level, making your skin feel hydrated. Even better, they also lessen allergies, help your respiratory system and minimize your chance of catching a virus. Just remember to change the water in your humidifier every day so mold and bacteria don’t grow.
PRODUCT IDEAS
Urpower Essential Oil Cool Mist Humidifier
This is a portable humidifier which can also be used as an aromatherapy diffuser. It contained an LED light with 7 colors and 2 brightness levels so it can also be a bedside ‘lamp’. It has many misting mode features so you can be comfortable.
Pure Enrichment MistAire Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier
This is great for night use because it can operate for 16 hours straight It also has a light in it and high-speed or low-speed mist settings. It’s ultrasonic, which means it’s not noisy and won’t disturb your sleep.
Levoit 6L Warm and Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier
This humidifier is best for big rooms and can operate for 36 hours straight. It has 3 mist settings for both the cool mist and the warm mist and is ultrasonic which, as I mentioned, means it’s quiet. It includes a sleep timer and remote control. It also tells you the current humidity level in the room and can adjust the mist based on the humidity.
Note that dry skin can lead to skin conditions like Seborrheic Dermatitis, Allergic Contact Dermatitis, Athlete’s Foot and Eczema so watch out and talk to your doctor if you’re concerned.
Tumblr media
PART 2: OILY SKIN
If you have oily skin your skin will feel greasy and look shiny throughout the entire day. You’ll also feel the need to constantly wash your face. The oil clogs your pores and in turn, you get lots of acne breakouts. I mentioned to wear sunscreen and exfoliate but now I’m going to go more in depth.
Tumblr media
SALICYLIC ACID
Salicylic acid is an acne treatment recommended to people with moderate acne problems. It fills pores and gets rid of built-up sebum, dead skin cells and any debris that could lead to breakouts. It helps treat blackheads and whiteheads and can help remove corns, calluses, and warts.
MAKEUP
If you have oily skin you should avoid heavy products because they can lead to blocked pores. You should use products made specifically for oily skin and always remember to take your makeup off before sleeping and working out. To prevent bacteria spreading, you should clean your makeup brushes regularly.
MOISTURIZER
If you have oily skin, you should use a moisturizer that’s lightweight and oil-free so your skin is soft and hydrated. If you don’t use moisturizer your face dries out and signals the oil glands to produce even more sebum making your face even oilier.
PRODUCT IDEAS
Lotus Herbals Alpamoist Alpha Hydroxy Skin Renewal Oil-Free Moisturizer
This moisturizer contains Alpha Hydroxy extracts from plants. The extracts help replenish your skin with moisture and it provides your skin with a smooth and vibrant complexation. It also contains grape and aloe vera extracts and has “antimicrobial antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties.” That means it destroys the growth of microorganisms, gets rid of redness and minimizes your pores.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer
This moisturizer protects you from the sun and stays on for a long time. It “keeps your skin moisturized all day with it’s lightweight, non-greasy formula while preventing skin damage from sun exposure”. Its been allergy tested and doesn’t contain any dyes, fragrances, alcohol or extra ingredients known to cause reactions.
Natio Daily Repair Oil-Free Moisturizer
This moisturizer contains pure aromatic and essential oils, which helps tone your skin. It minimizes shine and gives your skin a matte finish while tightening your pores. It has a light consistency that spreads well and is quickly absorbed and is an ideal makeup base.
Remember not to touch your face because your fingers are oily and can make new breakouts appear or make small ones bigger. It can also create scars which are not fun, trust me. I picked at my skin a lot and now even when I don’t have any pimples it looks like I have tons because of the scars.
Tumblr media
There you have it! I hope you enjoyed the article and I hope it helped you!
