you were a growing streamer. big in the minecraft and riot games community. you appreciated your fans from the unconditional support. ever since being an exposed barca fan, your platform definitely grew. content was trending to the point where you met the one and only, pablo gavi. his simple message of complimenting you building camp nou in minecraft ended in a few date nights, a lot of kissing, and some risky nights. your fans wanted some player in barca to notice you, but little did you know that you spent your nights with your dream barca player everyday.

exposing your relationship was not in your agenda any time soon. it was the peak of your gaming career and gavi had big plans for the national team. the internet would practically blow up from the news. both of you were not ready for that amount of personal space to be invaded.

it was that time of the day to start your daily stream. it was a good balance of work and relationship. start your stream when gavi is at practice, and end it when he’s at home to solely focus on him.

“hello, hello everyone! welcome to today's stream." waiting a few seconds as more people started joining. “today will be a minecraft stream. i’m thinking of making the barca logo.”

reading the comments blow up by the mention of the club is probably the funniest thing you’ve seen.

“change your shirt on the minecraft skin the jersey of your favorite player. i love that idea, but i don’t really have a favorite player. maybe i’ll do xavi or something.” lying isn’t the best thing to do to your supporters, but personal business is personal business.

after playing for hours and halfway done with the logo, you hear the door opening. “one second guys, i think my roommate is home.” roommate meaning your boyfriend. the plan is really thought out. your best friend occasionally popped into the streams, pretending to be your roommate, and it works. thinking you muted and turned off your camera (which happens often), gavi walks into your gaming room.

“hi gorgeous,” walking in and instantly kissing you made both of you smile. “are you streaming?”

“yeah, i am. i was building the logo. i can show you later when i’m ‘done greeting my roommate’.” making quotation marks with your fingers.

“yeah i’ll sit over here. i’ll just look while you continue playing.” you blew a kiss at him as you put your headset back on.

“alright guys, i’m back. did i miss anything?” your eyes tried to keep up with the chat. it was going faster than usual. you thought it was a raid, but nothing was happening. everyone was going crazy. finally, a donation came through with a message.

read aloud from the automated voice, “viscabarcaaa_11 donated $10 with a message. 'was that gavi you just kissed?’” fuck. gavi quickly sat up from the seat. you realized your camera and microphone was never off. your eyes panning from screen to screen in panic. speechless, you turned red instantly.

you were kissin’ and they caught you whether you like it or not.

you cleared your throat, still don’t know what to say. gavi unplugged your headphones from your pc tower to be able to hear what was going on. he urged you to get up. you had no idea what he was doing, but you just listened.

sitting down, he spoke slow and steady. “hello everyone. this was a very unexpected thing for you. not to mention, an unexpected plan from us. y/n and i have been seeing each other for a few months now. it wasn’t really planned for us to be revealed this early, but thank you for supporting my girlfriend. i am glad to get this off of our chest, because i’ve been wanting to show her off.”

playfully pushing him to the side, “okay thank you for attending this stream, see you tomorrow. love you guys.” making sure you ended the stream fully before giving off a sigh.

“looks like i can show you off now.”

Something's wrong.

Something is bothering Wanda's mind, her thoughts are whirring like lightning bolts ready to electrocute her at any minute. With every second she spends re-reading the same sentences written in her favorite book is another thought flashing right at her mind. 

She lets out a breath, closing the book she dearly treasures, and like how her brain got accustomed to how she's doing this movement every second, her head turns down to where her phone is quietly seated beside her.

Wanda's eyes burn right through her phone, for the first time in her life, she wants her phone bombarded by a set of texts or if she's lucky enough to receive a single phone call from a certain someone. It has been weeks, nearing a month since she took the courage of texting you, hopeful that her single text triggered another hangout with her best friend but to her dismay, the text was left unread. She thought of different things and distracted herself with new hobbies but her mind always drifted off to you. 

"It's February now.. The text I sent was in December.." she mumbles to herself, the soft cushions of her couch do not help her feel relaxed at all, nibbling the tips of her thumb's nail, she thought, fuck it.

Fast, swift movements, she quickly took her phone without a second thought, fingers hovering above your name. She stops, her mind blank as she stares at the contact photo she set out for her best friend.

A stolen photo she took, months before you and her became truly friends. You had teased her constantly about the story of the stolen photo, teasing her as a stalker and she would always reply with a tinge of red spreading right at her cheeks. 

The corners of her mouth turned up without her control, reminiscing the college days she had with her best friend was the only thing inspiring her to continue whatever she had in mind. She wants you to be with her every step of her life, you're her best friend, the only person that truly matters to her and if it means making her look like an obsessive person, so be it. 

So, she did. Her thumbs pressing firmly on the call button, she breathes out as she places her phone right at her ears. A single ring happens and then it goes straight to something familiar. 

"The person you are calling is busy at the moment." the automated voice declares, she freezes. Her eyes darted across the room, her face falling, the beating of her heart increasing as an uneasy dread settled right at her being. 

Wanda grips her phone, settling it right in front of her face. The phone trembles in her clutch, she opens the messaging app, staring at the last message she sent in the month of December. It says delivered. 

She can't possibly be blocked if she got to send that message, right? 

But today is February. A huge time gap between those two months, and she never sent another message, her courage was limited to only sending you that one message where she stated she was excited to see you again. 

I didn't say anything weird, right? She thought. 

Eyes boring right at the delivered message but never been read. Not wanting to acknowledge the possibility of her best friend blocking her, she types out another message to test out her theory. 

The text bubble turns green. Like the leaves of the trees dancing right outside of her windows, the freshly mowed grass in her yard, the same color but in a different shade like her eyes. A different variation of green but it is still green. A sender's message should never be green. It just meant one thing, she had been blocked. 

The very essence of Wanda's life has cut off any contact with her, all of your accounts are nowhere to be found, and even your precious account on that one app is now gone. She didn't know what happened, her mind was too loud but silent at the same time. The air seems to be useless for her at this moment as her chest constricts with its scream for air. Her sight became blurry, she was suffocating in worry and fright. Something must be wrong with her phone. There's no way she got blocked, right? By her very own best friend, the only person she had, her person. 

"Hey, is something wrong?" a voice snaps her out accompanied by the sound of a door closing, she turns her head to gaze at her husband. A tall lean man standing right in front of their front door, suitcase in hand, necktie loosely hung, and face morphing into confusion. 

Wanda turns her head away, wiping something under her eyes as fast as she could and standing up to greet her husband. With a shaky voice, she musters up a smile, "Nothing is wrong, here let me help you with your coat." 

"How is your day?" she asks, folding his coat neatly in her arms, her gaze flickers right at his eyes for a second then moves on to the phone settled on the couch. 

"The same old routine, my brother wanted me to do something different like investing…" His voice fades out into the background white noise of their suburban two-story house, she feels her breathing gradually increase as time passes by, the gravity beneath her feet seems to be losing its grip and purpose as her knees wobble. 

"How do you know if someone has blocked your number?" she suddenly questions her husband. Her alert voice cut off whatever dialogue her husband was saying. The man in front of her stilled at her question, eyebrows frowning at the sudden uncomfortable tension his wife was emitting. 

"If it rings once then an automated voice answers." he quipped, annoyance bubbling at how his wife cut him off. "Is something wrong?"

"Nothing. I-I just remembered this book club thing.." her voice drifts off as she walks away from him, the door closing behind her as she rummages through her closet to find decent clothes for outside. Briskly walking towards their front door, Wanda was stopped by the tight grip on her arms. 

"Where is this thing?" 

"Just in the neighborhood, you can heat the dinner through a microwave or something. I'll try to be back before dinner, just in case I can't. I, um, emergency meeting. For this club, yes. I'll see you later, honey." Wanda didn't waste time hearing the reply from her husband. She knew the words she spitted out were rushed and definitely weird but she had somewhere to go, somewhere where she knows her questions can be answered. 

Without any lingering doubting thoughts, she pushed away any possible aftermath of her actions as her feet grounds at the gas pedal of her car leading her into the route she never thought she would be taking. But desperation makes a person forget all their prejudices on some things even if the very same thing has caused her the insecurities locked hidden at her soul.

Why and how can the internet be or feel like a safe space for women outside of political organizations? 

For many women not involved in political groups, the internet can feel like a safe space where they can challenge the gender inequality they deal with in their everyday lives. It gives them a place to explore who they are, connect with others, and talk about feminism and gender issues without the restrictions they face offline. Nouraie-Simone (2005) explains that for young Iranian women, the internet becomes "a liberating territory of one’s own—a place to resist a traditionally imposed subordinate identity" (p. 61). It offers them a break from the limitations of public life, allowing them to express themselves freely. In this way, the internet is like the “room of one’s own” that Virginia Woolf described—offering women a personal, empowering space to speak up and take control of their identity.

2. Would it be considered right or wrong when people seek out online spaces that affirm and solidify their own social identities? 

Looking for online spaces that support and strengthen one's own social identity is usually seen as a positive thing. People often use the internet to connect with others who share their racial, gender, or sexual identities, which can be empowering. For instance, young people might use social media to express themselves and connect with friends (Boyd, 2004). People of color and LGBTQ+ individuals also use specific websites to affirm their identities and find like-minded people (Bryson, 2004). Nouraie-Simone (2005) notes that for those in restrictive environments, the internet can provide a freeing space to explore and express their identities (p. 61-62). Moreover, research shows that people with health issues use online platforms to talk about their experiences openly, rather than to escape them (Pitts, 2004). So, using the internet to support one’s identity is generally a meaningful and helpful practice.

3. How can high tech tools impact and affect poor working class communities negatively when it is supposed to “help those in need?”

Even with the best-laid plans, high-tech instruments can be detrimental to underprivileged populations. Governor LePage of Maine falsely claimed that recipients of TANF were abusing their benefits based on EBT data, despite the fact that only 0.03% of transactions were dubious. Due to the perpetuation of unfavorable perceptions, receiving public aid was seen as "lazy" or "criminal" (Eubanks, 2018, p. 19). Stricter regulations were consequently implemented, burdening families with additional stress (e.g., requiring them to retain receipts for a year). In this instance, technology didn't help—rather, it made things more difficult for individuals who require assistance.Eubanks, V. (2018). 4. AI struggles to be able to fully conduct black and asian faces and it is known. Why does law enforcement rely on this to identify these people knowing the risk of putting someone innocent behind bars? 

Facial recognition tech is notoriously bad at identifying Black and Asian faces, but law enforcement still uses it. Research shows that these systems are much more likely to misidentify people of color because they’re often trained on biased data (Buolamwini & Gebru, 2018). For example, Nijeer Parks, a Black man from New Jersey, was wrongfully arrested after being misidentified by facial recognition—he's the third known Black man to face this kind of mistake (Hill, 2020). Even though the risks are clear, police keep using this flawed tech, likely because it seems like an easy solution, but it ends up hurting innocent people. There needs to be more caution and oversight to prevent these errors.

what's Michelle up to these days? Has she gotten any better at holding back her monster sneezes? Did she wind up with that guy in the end? I imagine it would be a great match, having them both help tend to each other's noses when a big one is coming. Speaking of characters thought about often, I always am thinking about how valiantly she tried to hold back her sneezes not to ruin his show.

Anon you inspired me to read that story for the first time in ages and wow that shit is HOT lmao. Idk if I have another Really Epic Buildup story like that, tho I do them fairly often in RPs (shameless plug?) Anyway hmmmmm I imagine Michelle and Tim are still together probably? I can’t imagine either of them letting the other go, given that neither has ever met anyone with ginormous sneezes other than themselves. A bit of a trauma bond I suppose. I imagine Michelle has become a video editor. That seems like a good gig for her. Work from home, they probably live in a place in New Jersey kinda in the middle of nowhere (Tim had a bit part in a Ma/rvel movie, natch.) All the furniture’s bolted down, and they have a cool home automation thing (put together by Tim’s nerdy buddy and former roommate in their struggling young actor days and like from time to time there’s MMF threesomes what who said that) where like they can press a button or call A/lexa to open the windows and they try to stick their heads out of a window to sneeze, when they can. Tim and Michelle have gotten *really* good at helping each other hold back and maybe the nerdy ex-roommate who is totally not a fetishist and who they definitely don’t have very hot threesomes with is also pretty good at helping with holding back, which is the only way Michelle makes it through Tim’s plays without a repeat of the disaster chronicled in the original story.

For a span of over twenty years, civil rights have been deteriorating in the US. Thanks to laws giving national security officials more monitoring and investigative powers, federal agencies operating under the national security umbrella, in collaboration with their state counterparts, have constructed an extensive homeland security system. In 2018, New Jersey became a surveillance state with one of these systems. This unpopular system involved the placement of over 160 cameras in the bustling parts of Newark in an attempt to prevent crime as well keep their authorities in check. The problem, these systems do not have audits or safe guards for the people under its watch.

My question is, Does the greater city of Gotham know of these security devices tracking them at all times and what safe guards are there to ensure this power is not abused?

Ah I see where this is going.

We vigilantes usually operate out of government reach, though we believe in cooperation when necessary. The surveillance systems were unpopular in most of Jersey and most definitely Gotham- I'm not particularly fond of them myself.

But they've been pivotal in reducing crime rates all over the state. Here's a study you might find interesting-

The surveillance system is something that most of Gotham is fully aware of- the criminals more so than the civilians certainly.

I'm unaware what data the government tracks, you'll have to contact their representatives for that I'm afraid- but the vigilantes of Gotham have many safeguards in their own system to prevent any misuse or abuse of such power.

The system the Bats use to track and monitor crime is more automated and has privacy barriers that do not allow vigilantes to simply access the data for their personal use without use of a proper protocol. The exact details will be clearer if you talk to Oracle herself, she's the one who's mostly responsible for the systems and I have full faith in her.

The Gotham vigilantes have their own individual moral codes and considering the separation from government control, it is imperative that we all follow it lest we drift. Everyone is kept in check by the others. It is- not perfect- but we make sure we're not crossing lines.

The privacy and security of Gotham citizens is always on our minds.

There, a lone worker, gowned and hair-netted, sifts through the linear salad to pull out the few undesirables with a gloved hand.

80 Acres Farms, which launched in 2015, is one of more than 2,000 vertical farms sprouting up across the U.S., part of a $3 billion global industry that is projected to skyrocket to $24 billion by 2029. Along with other vertical farm companies like AeroFarms in Newark, Gotham Greens in Brooklyn, Bowery in New Jersey, and Plenty Unlimited in San Francisco, 80 Acres is pairing LED technology with data and advanced robotics to upend the idea of the traditional open-field farm.

In this controlled, enclosed environment, the process from seed to packaging is automated. There’s no need for pesticides or herbicides. And farming can happen virtually anywhere, from the desert to the frozen tundra to the middle of a swelling urban landscape. The technology is so unbound to the climate that astronauts are using it to grow lettuce, cabbage, mustard, and kale aboard the International Space Station — and some are even eyeing it as a way to jump-start colonies if humans ever leave the Earth.

Stanford University published a working paper earlier this year that revealed a glaring racial disparity in audits of Black taxpayers. The study prompted some lawmakers to urge the agency to conduct an internal investigation into how it determines which taxpayers to audit.

On Monday (May 15), the IRS confirmed the suspicion that it has a racially biased audit selection system.

“While there is a need for further research, our initial findings support the conclusion that Black taxpayers may be audited at higher rates than would be expected given their share of the population,” IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel wrote to the U.S. Senate.

Rep. Bill Pascrell, a New Jersey Democrat on the House Way and Means Committee, said he and his colleagues raised concerns in March about the over-audits of Black taxpayers. The committee oversees the federal tax system.

“IRS is making strides but extra audits of Black Americans is disgraceful and must end,” Pascrell tweeted.

The Stanford study estimated that the IRS audits Black taxpayers at three to five times the rate of non-Black taxpayers. Since the agency doesn’t collect data about taxpayer race, it appears the disparity stems from the agency targeting people who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a benefit for low-wage workers that has a high rate of mistakes.

“We are deeply concerned by these findings and committed to doing the work to understand and address any disparate impact of the actions we take,” Werfel wrote, adding that the agency is “dedicating resources” to figure out why its automated audit selection produces a disparity.

CBS News reports that the agency intends to use some of the $80 billion it received through the Inflation Reduction Act to understand the problem, which the Stanford study suggested that it stemmed from the agency’s flawed artificial intelligence algorithm.

Werfel said his office will update the lawmakers on a regular basis on its progress toward fixing the problem.
