Special interest-related gifts, such as books, collectibles, or hobby supplies, are often appreciated. Practical items like organizational tools, visual schedules, or time management aids can support daily living. Tech gadgets, including

(CW: Cringe, Autism Parents stuff, drunk mention, infantilization)
So I don't have a degree in Graphic Design, but I do have a sense of general aesthetic. I figured that it's April. Let's rate, and potentially verbally tear apart and drag through the mud, some autism shirts and graphic designs, and I'll probably do a part 2, these scores are only semi-arbitrary: First up is this:
Tumblr media
Already off the top, I am confusion because it seems to read "I wear puzzle cousin autism awareness". Sounds like whoever made this was drunk.
Puzzle pieces, ew.
The red, yellow, green, and blue look like the shades you'd see in elementary school, so that seems pretty infantilizing.
Autism Awareness, I am very much aware of my existence.
Final Score: 0 out of 10. Designer, go home; you're drunk.
Next we have this:
Tumblr media
This one already has a slight advantage over the first because it's at least coherent in terms of the message.
Elementary school colors, but make it extra tacky.
Puzzle pieces; don't try to bullshit me by putting the autism awareness banner over it, I can see the other indents that make them puzzle pieces.
Once again, I am well aware of my own existence.
At least it's a smaller design.
Final Score: 0.5 out of 10, and that's being generous.
Next one's not a shirt, but it still counts:
Tumblr media
No blue so thank God for that.
This is up to personal preference, but to me, the person-first language is giving "I need to be reminded that someone is a person."
Puzzle pieces. Ew. Don't BS me, I can see them.
Walk down Autism Lane. (it's right below the word LOVE) Sorry, but we don't allow ableists on Autism Lane; you need to be a premium member and to be a premium member, you need to not be a dick.
The pumpkin disturbs me for some reason, and not in the Halloween way; I mean, it just straight-up disturbs me.
Final Score: 0.5 out of 10. Bury it in a shallow grave.
Just found this one:
Tumblr media
It's easy on the eyes at least.
No tacky elementary school colors.
No puzzle pieces.
The bunny's cute, but this also seems very infantilizing.
Person first language is a no for me.
Why are all of the is lowercase, but the others are uppercase?
Final Score: 5 out of 10. Not great, but not terrible.
Here we have simple:
Tumblr media
Elementary school colors, but credit where credit's due; it's not terrible on the eyes.
Why is blessed on there three times?
One big-ass puzzle piece.
"Autism blesses" Yes, because being bullied by my peers, being indirectly told who I am is wrong, having the worst time making friends, always feeling like I'm never truly part of a friend group, being confused when some adults got mad at me, not having anyone to play with at 4 years old is an absolute fucking blessing. /s And that's the tip of the iceberg.
"Fun", "Sweet", "Cute".....it's the infantilization for me.
Final Score: 3 out of 10. No further elaboration.
Then there's this monstrosity:
Tumblr media
I call this color Patronizing Paraprofessional Blue, aka the tackiest shade of blue ever.
It looks like something one of those older white suburban millennial moms would wear. Like something a Karen would wear to one of those autism walks or one of those social skills teachers who talk in that slowed-down patronizing kindergarten teacher tone with that fake-ass smile, no matter how old you are. You know the one I'm talking about, right? Yeah, they'd wear this.
Puzzle piece. Light It Up Blue. Ew.
We all know what organization this supports.
Final Score: -10 out of 10. Burn it.
Let's get in a good one to counter that abomination of a shirt and end part one on a higher note:
Tumblr media
Nice simple design with a black background.
No tacky elementary school colors.
Identity-first language.
Really counters the....what the fuck would it be called? The UwU autism parent thing? ("I am his voice, he is my heart," "See the able, not the label," etc,.) It counters that.
The light sparkle around "a bitch" is chef's kiss.
Final Score: 11 out of 10. Perfection.

A Silent Understanding
Wednesday Addams x autistic fem reader
Tumblr media
A/N: This is my first fanfic, and any feedback would be appreciated. Let me know if you want a part 2. (I am actually autistic, so this is mostly based off the symptoms I show, but if you have any typical symptoms of autism you wish for me to add to the story later let me know and I'll try my best. Please be respectful to all, and remember to drink water and look after yourself, cuties)
Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
Summary: In the comfort of the library, you and Wednesday share a moment of vulnerability and trust.
In the dimly lit, Gothic confines of Nevermore Academy, the atmosphere was as thick with mystery as ever. Wednesday Addams, with her signature braids and dark demeanour, was engrossed in her latest endeavor—a particularly challenging crossword puzzle.
You, a quiet student with an affinity for the arts and a mind that danced to a different rhythm, often found solace in the same library where Wednesday spent much of her time. You had always admired her from afar, drawn to her enigmatic presence and unique perspective on the world.
Today, the library was especially silent, save for the occasional creak of the old wooden floors and the soft rustling of pages. You found a seat at a nearby table, trying to focus on your sketchbook. It was in these rare, quiet moments that you felt most at peace, your thoughts flowing freely without the need for words.
As the hours ticked by, you noticed Wednesday glancing over her crossword with a hint of frustration. Summoning your courage, you approached her table, clutching a folded piece of paper in your hand.
"Do you need help with that?" you asked softly, your voice barely above a whisper. Your heart raced as you waited for her response, unsure if you had intruded on her solitary work.
Wednesday looked up, her dark eyes meeting yours with a flicker of curiosity. "And why would you offer assistance?" she asked, her tone a mixture of skepticism and intrigue.
"I noticed you were having trouble with a few clues," you replied, hoping your voice conveyed the sincerity you felt. "I've always been good with puzzles."
A faint, inscrutable smile tugged at the corners of Wednesday’s lips. "Very well. Let's see if your skills are as impressive as you claim."
You settled into the seat beside her, your nerves calming as you began to work through the crossword clues together. The process was slow but rewarding, each shared glance and whispered suggestion deepening the connection between you.
As the final word fit perfectly into the grid, Wednesday's gaze lingered on you. "You did well," she said, her voice softer than usual. "Thank you."
The library was quiet, save for the faint hum of the old heating system. In this serene bubble, you felt an unexpected urge to express something you had been holding back. You reached for the folded piece of paper you had brought, unfolding it to reveal a simple drawing of a crescent moon—an image that had always felt comforting to you.
Wednesday’s eyes softened as she studied the drawing, and for a moment, you both simply sat in silence. It was a moment of unspoken understanding.
Without quite knowing how it happened, your hand found its way to Wednesday’s, fingers brushing lightly against hers. The contact was gentle but electric, a silent acknowledgment of the bond that had formed between you.
Wednesday’s gaze met yours, her expression inscrutable yet filled with something tender. Slowly, she leaned in, her lips brushing against yours in a hesitant, yet warm kiss. It was a soft, fleeting moment that spoke volumes, a shared silence that encapsulated everything words could not.
When you finally pulled away, Wednesday’s eyes were still locked onto yours, a rare and genuine smile playing on her lips. The world outside seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of you in your own little corner of understanding.
As you both sat there, the unspoken connection between you felt more profound than any words could ever convey. It was a silent promise of something more, a shared moment of intimacy that marked the beginning of something beautiful.

stanford is autistic-coded and that really affected his relationship with fiddleford (tbob spoilers)
(I want to start off saying I’m autistic and might rant about Arthur a bit here because it’s a 10+ year strong special interest and you just have to deal with it)
“another day, another failed social interaction.” (ford, the book of bill)
“when my waitress told me the apple pie was made ‘from scratch,’ I replied, ‘incredible! I must meet the chef who created the atoms!’ She made a face like she had tasted bleach and ended her shift early.”
I read this imagining ford smiling, expecting a laugh from the waitress. I know so many autistic people who make jokes like this, it really to me doesn’t seem much different from the jokes that people do like. Taking things and shifting their meaning. The children’s show Arthur put it best in the episode “When Carl Met George” (or, “Carl and the Missing Puzzle Piece”, definitely check it out, although it was made in 2010 so it uses an outdated term and has few stereotypes)
Basically in that episode, autism was described as George crash landing on an alien planet with no instructions.
here’s some of the transcript:
“(narrator): …And even though you speak the same language, you sometimes have a hard time understanding what they mean.
Francine (as alien): Good night for a banana fight, right?
George: Um, yes? No! I don't know!”
Arthur (as alien) walks up to them wearing flippers, a tutu, a huge bow tie and a hat of whipped cream with a cherry. His outfit is absolutely ridiculous.
“(narrator): and things that seem hilarious to you…
George: (laughs)
(narrator): ...aren't funny at all to them.
Arthur (as alien): What's he laughing at? Is it my nose?
Francine (as alien): I have no idea. You're weird!
Francine and Arthur walk off.
George: But it was a joke, right? Oh.”
this basically describes the situation perfectly. on top of that, I know of autistic men that seem like they are being aggressive or sarcastic to women when they make these jokes, most likely what happened during this dining incident. (which, honestly, women go through a lot of shit with men and I don’t blame them if they assume the worst.)
But let’s go to fidds and fords relationship. (romantic or not.)
I’ve seen so many fiddlestan posts shaming ford for what are just autistic qualities to justify their ship being superior. (ex. One post said “stan recognized when fidds was distressed unlike SOME people” in a fanfic, which is both shaming ford and pretty uncanon seeming)*
I really don’t think ford realized fidds wasn’t ok until it all fell apart. he closest he goes is basically “fidds seems jittery from the whole shapeshifter thing so we can just relax and that will fix it.” I think it’s a common autistic mentality that “if this happens I can fix it with this, and that will solve the problem.”
many people on the spectrum have logical systematic thinking and a preference for clear rules with predictable outcomes.
I think that’s the closest ford ever got to thinking that something was wrong.
I think he never realized fidds was actually going insane. All he thought was that he was going to betray him because of Bill and that black ring.
“it became clear how deeply I had hurt this man I once held so dear.”(ford, journal 3)
I really think he held onto the thought that fidds betrayed him. autistic people are also a lot of times easier to manipulate due to challenges in seeing deception, probably why bill saw him as an easy target.
but of course, fidds in the end with his big heart and amazing mind forgave ford. i’m almost positive he knew ford thought different.
and probably got fiddle𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 with him later
Edit: I should mention that the whole “I’ve seen so many fiddlestan posts shaming ford for what are just autistic qualities. (ex.“stan recognized when fidds was distressed unlike SOME people”)” is just a common type of thing I see in fiddlestan posts and fanfics. I really doubt that Stan WOULD do that, but fiddlestan shippers are a whole different breed ig. Edited again for clarity on the same thing

Round of 32: Battle #11
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Wander and Sylvia (Wander Over Yonder): These two fit together like perfect puzzle pieces. That's not even an exaggeration- their character designs were literally made with the intention of their silhouettes fitting together perfectly whenever they hug, which is often. With the kind hearted and optimistic Wander always offering a helping hand, it's Sylvia who's the one looking out for HIM when he's too busy looking out for those around him. In turn, Wander is nothing short of absolutely supportive of Sylvia and her ambitions, willing to try and see things from her perspective while staying true to his own beliefs. They are truly a friendship that will last through the ages, bringing out the best in them both.
Abed Nadir and Annie Edison (Community): Autism VS. Autism in the real. They are sweetie-pies who comfort each other when they are overwhelmed. They are besties.

I blew Nat is autistic (based on basically everything she does in the winter soldier and black widow)
Could be cool to see the team learning not to disrupt her pre/post mission routines and then subtly doing things in the future to support her.
Hey Anon, thanks for your ask. I am not an autistic adult and am not so comfortable in writing as one.
There is this wonderful fic Of Spectrum and Spoons, which may be up your alley and interest you if you are looking for a portrayal of Natasha with autism.
I have however written some headcannons - up to you whether or not you take them on as autistic traits, trauma or some other neurodiversity. <3
Natasha has safe foods - everyone knows what they are and Tony makes sure the tower is well stocked with them
There’s one suit that Natasha likes over the other four she has. Clint thinks they look identical but when he asks her, she can tell him the differences.
Natasha’s does well with scripted social communication - it’s mandatory in her line of work so if she can pretend to be someone else and play a role it’s easier. When she’s not, and it’s just her, the demands go down and she prefers to communicate on her own terms.
Often she will walk out of the kitchen when there’s too many people in there
She likes hiding in the vents with Clint. It’s quiet and enclosed and dark
Natasha likes dim lighting
Certain smells will send her into hiding - Steve knows this when he made fish soup. She avoided the kitchen for days, even though everyone else couldn’t smell it, she could. until Clint burnt something and it cleared the smell out.
Natasha finds ways of regulating herself. Most Clint knows, but when she first started at shield he didn’t know that Fury recognised her need for water and the sea; and after hard missions he’d send her on a low ball missions to the beach. It was unspoken and she never thanked him for it.
Steve enjoys slow music, he learnt about tempos reducing heart rates after panic attacks from Natasha
The idea for a lullaby or a grounding rhyme for Bruce came from Natasha. Clint has a similar set of phrasing to help her when she’s dissociating. Only Clint knows these, but Tony has some words that help too.
Natasha loves soft things. She never had any in childhood and enjoys a secret stash of soft items
Clint knows that Natasha will do ballet to regulate herself, but it doesn’t stop him worrying
Clint and Natasha will do puzzles together, Natasha isn’t so good at them but is patient at finding a piece and sticks with it long after Clint has fallen asleep on the couch
Natasha hates wearing shoes
<3 thanks for trusting me with your prompt Anon.
This week is something else - send in headcannons, fic ideas, wip questions, recs etc - I’ll take a couple more and choose which <3

Breaking Barriers: Non-Verbal Doesn’t Mean That I Have Nothing To Say
The world often communicates through a constant stream of words, but what if your voice isn't the main channel? For many individuals with autism, Down syndrome, or other conditions, nonverbal communication takes center stage. This doesn't mean they have "nothing to say" – it simply means their message is expressed differently.
Tumblr media
Buy now:19.95$
Nonverbal communication encompasses a rich tapestry of expressions, gestures, and actions. A furrowed brow might convey frustration, a pointed finger could indicate a desired object, and a joyful smile speaks volumes. Learning to understand these nonverbal cues is key to unlocking the world of someone who may not speak traditionally.
Here's how we can bridge the communication gap:
Pay attention to body language: Facial expressions, posture, and gestures offer valuable insights into emotions and needs.
Embrace alternative communication methods: AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices, picture boards, or even typing can give a voice to those who struggle with spoken language.
Be patient and understanding: Deciphering nonverbal communication takes time and practice. Create a safe space for exploration and experimentation.
Tumblr media
Buy now
By recognizing that "non-verbal" doesn't mean "silent," we can build stronger connections and celebrate the unique ways people express themselves. Remember, the most important words aren't always spoken – they're felt, seen, and understood.
The Autism Puzzle Heart is a powerful symbol that combines two universal concepts: love (represented by the heart) and autism awareness (represented by the puzzle piece). It embodies the idea that individuals with autism deserve love, understanding, and acceptance.
Tumblr media
Buy now
The puzzle piece reflects the unique way each person on the autism spectrum experiences the world. The heart signifies the compassion and care needed to embrace these differences.
This symbol is often used by parents, siblings, friends, and autistic individuals themselves to show pride, raise awareness, and spread love for the autism community. It's a reminder that despite the challenges, autism is filled with potential, and autistic individuals have a place of love and belonging in our world.

Puzzle piece, autism parent leading development, deeply othering language, that's a yikes....
Max, an Autistic Journey is a retro style top-down turn-based RPG filled with mini games, monsters and most of all, heart. Developed by Stéphane Cantin, who is just a devoted dad who made a game with his son about his son’s autism. During the game player’s step into the shoes of Max, a ten year old boy who must find ways to deal with everyday life while being diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many players will discover a world familiar but alien to them. Some may relate to Max's story all too well. Regardless where you fall in the spectrum of life, Max, an Autistic Journey delivers an entertaining, imaginative and informative trip worth taking. This retro-inspired RPG gives players not only a unique gaming experience, but an insight into a world many people have never seen. While the visualization of the beasts may be fantasy, the emotions and frustrations they represent are very real for a lot of people.

Autism is my puzzle piece, not because I’m missing something, but because it is the piece that I was missing. Its the piece I didn’t know I had, right at the center of my heart.
I suppose it makes sense, I had most of the other pieces, but there was always something that made me feel completely separate from everyone else. The painful RSD comes into play whenever I feel rejected by other people’s expectations. I feel like I don’t deserve to exist.
But this is like a fire burning in my chest. It hurt at first, to feel my heart burning in the sea of fog. But all of me, all of me lights my way, I am glowing, I am sparkling.
So even if I find myself weary and tired, I will be able to find my way, even if it’s not back home. But to somewhere that I am accepted.

rewatching mindhunter and the jensen/holden parallels are getting to me again
obvi some of its the autism but also the specific comments bill makes ab holden and how he just powers through everything. isn't fatigued by the bullshit they're sorting through and the dire disgusting nature of it all. it's all calculations and puzzle pieces for him
but this is not to say he's heartless. he cares a lot for the people involved and when they tell him "it's not enough" he takes it to heart. he just doesnt broadcast it
and then to go back on that "powering through it all" and to have him breakdown w panic attacks only a short time later bc he never processed it
THAT is jensen. not everybody likes him; he can come off as a know-it-all who only likes his way (same as holden) but that's bc it's right and he knows it. if he didn't, he wouldn't say it. it shows when he's right, and he seems so sure of himself in every circumstance that it seems like he has it all figured out. he goes case after case without slowing down bc all the pieces just fit together for him
but in that same stroke he is not a present tense person. he is so in his own head all the time that when he Does come back to the present day, it's fucking intense. he gets so overwhelmed w all the real world shit and everything that's happened that it takes a bit for him to take it all in
and usually the reason he's aware of the present day is often bc of something that triggers him. esp stuff he didn't know that triggered him. the chemical attack wasn't even bad for him. he's alive. congrats. everybody move on
but being yelled at by ethan? being called useless? being told he has no empathy? all of those are fucking devastating to him. they completely take him out of that constant cycle of work that, to him, is just putting the pieces together, and it makes him reevaluate what's actually happening
and that's where the panic attacks and big reactions come in. he could be doing something he's done 1000 times before, hearing the roomies make a joke he's heard 1000 times before, but suddenly he's aware of it. aware of how it feels and where it hits. and it all comes crashing down in a way that he can't handle and process without some time
and it all just adds to the way he's seen as an ass, same as holden. like people making comments ab them Being Them, or having to shut them up, etc etc and then being like wtf when they break down over it. and i just love seeing that in characters, esp when given the opportunity to see the reactions around them

Hello, my name is Kitty Taylor. I'm a self diagnosed autistic adult who is celebrating Autism Acceptance Month for the first time as a new autistic person. I did research after my friend told me they suspected me to be autistic and I'm forever grateful for them.
I want to draw and write stories of characters with autism. I will warn that I do use the puzzle piece for myself, but I won't use it for other individuals or the community. I will be using a gold infinity sign for that and a rainbow infinity sign for neurodiversity.
With that in mind, I do use a tw tag for the puzzle piece. If I must, I'll use it for blue. It's my favorite color, even if it's used for hate. I first drew a puzzle piece heart with my loved ones names in it and recently with my character, Neko-chan, because it's true. I'm not an uwu autistic and I'm okay with that.
I wish all austtic people a Happy Autism Acceptance Month!

so, introductions:
i've been trying to figure out a way to shorten my shortsidedly-chosen username but nothing's really clicking for me i have been named and i love it so from now i'm going by rhymes (@autism-alley you don't understand how my heart leapt)
i use they/them pronouns
my current obsessions are pjo, lockwood & co (tho i haven't read the books yet), and all of us are dead (i haven't gotten past the first episode, but it lives rent free in my head)
have an arting sideblogthing now woot @heteromerous-arting
title / description / username explanations:
or adapting the classics:
Oh, Virgil, dust and ashes in thy grave Wherever that grave sepulchered may be, Forgive me this small speech, wherein I rave That thou didst ever live to harass me. Oh, not that I do not appreciate The mild, concordant beauty of your lines – But I am puzzled by them; I translate, And every word seems but a set of signs. - Kent 1990, quoting Gwendolyn Brooks's early schoolwork - citation and quote taken from Michele Valerie Ronnick's “Virgil in the Black American Experience” - bolding mine
a hetermerous rhyme is a rhyme in which a word (multisyllabic) is rhymed with two or more words. an example of this is in "The Anniad"; in the first two lines, brooks rhymes "chocolate" with "or to fate." i thought there was something beautiful in the fragmentary rhyming (and the username wasn't taken) so...
title is from the poem above, and the description is from further on in the anniad. i love gwendolyn brooks and i think that she engages with the classics, with these greek myths and story-cycles in a way that both subverts, critiques, and pays homage to the role they've played in her life. in "Sea Grapes" derek walcott writes "The classics can console. But not enough." and i find this to be true of brooks and true of all modern adaptations of these myths.
...including percy jackson. which is why i've written so much about that specific piece of media.
