Actually yknow what? Sort of pissed at the rest of the world. When KOSA comes around in America everybody's racing to be the first one to jump on and stop it. Everybody's racing to protest. 80k notes!!!!! Amazing!!!!! Even more!!!! Spread this like wildfire!!!!
But when the social media ban comes around in Australia? When we warn y'all about it for months and we ask for help and we say "hey! we're being restricted too!"? Nothing happens. Of course, nothing bloody happens.
Now it’s passed the Senate!

Australian Social media ban
RUH!
As you may or may not now the bill that bans under 16s from the internet in Australia has passed. The ban won’t take place for another 12 months, and companies will be left to figure out how its gonna be enforced.
Here is a fact sheet from the gov. It coveres penalties and how it will be enforced.
The Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill it’s self.
Australian Youth Affairs Coalition of why this is some serious shit
The link to the bill its self was frequently giving me an error. Recommend downloading.
Feel free to add anything in reblogs.

hi i'm not sure if you've spoken about it on here but if you're able to reblog some posts on Australia's social media ban that would be lovely. i'm over the age requirement but i don't want to upload my id just to use tumblr. additionally, i'm really worried about queer youth - if i weren't for the support of reddit and Tumblr communities i wouldn't have had the confidence to transition. if you could help spread awareness that would be amazing
i did not know that's a thing, so thank you for letting me know! if folks have good reliable sources on this, i would love to take a look. i am US based and my QPP lives in Canada, so i only tend to know what's going on in these 2 countries. i appreciate when people stop by to let me know what's going on in the world- i'll be happy to spread info about it once i do some research. if people have good articles on the matter, feel free to share, because this sounds like a huge mess

Just so y'all know
The Australian version of KOSA has passed through the Senate and in the later months of 2025 in Australia, it'll take effect there soon.
To those that aren't Australian, do anything you can to spread knowledge of it more online whether it be on this site, Bluesky, Tiktok, etc. To Australian citizens, do whatever you can to stop it by contacting your senators and the government to tell them on how this bill will do more harm than good.
Please get the word out globally!

When governments say they want to ban social media its never for the good of the children. If it were for the good of the children there would be restrictions on ads and what content is promoted on those sites such as ed being constantly being pushed.
We are apart of the age who could still use social media, and yet the ban will not help. Forcing children will not help them have less issues. Mental health and other issues will still exist. These issues don't come from social media, they come from society and the world around us. These issues don't come from social media, they come from society

The Australian Social Media Ban - The perspective of an ACTUAL teenager
Buckle up, this is a long one and I know probably no one will see this but oh well. I feel obligated to speak on the Australian social media ban as an Australian teenager that will be directly affected by it if the bill is passed. It’s stupid. That’s the basis of this entire law. There is no clarity behind the enforcement of this law and it seems to completely misunderstand social media, teenagers and the effect that it might have after the fact.
My first point is that the Australian government, Anthony Albanese specifically as the leader of the country, have not specified how exactly this law would be carried out. The only information I have found to be publicly available is that it will be the “app’s responsibility” this means that unless the apps themselves release a statement about their personal strategy, the Australian people, the people it’s affecting directly, will have no way of fully understanding the bill before it is passed. We will have little information to make proper judgements about this policy and misinformation is conducive to a failed attempt at a ban.
I do not disagree that social media can be harmful to children, the story of Charlotte O’Brien being at the forefront of my mind as I’m writing this. But, banning social media as a whole is a rash and simple-minded decision. The root of the problem isn’t social media, but the OTHER CHILDREN that are writing the harmful messages. Bullying will happen whether or not there are apps to type out insults on and solving these issues is about educating the people doing the bullying. We need to teach young people to treat people with respect, not take away the vices for underage people struggling in real life.
I’m aware of the studies surrounding self esteem and social media, but aren’t there better ways to rectify this? Shouldn’t we be giving children ways to build their self esteem and overcome these issues? This whole law stems from the government’s inability to step up and provide proper education and resources to minors that can’t do it for themselves. As much as I like to deny it, my generation has grown to be attached to social media as we have been around it since birth and taking it away will only bring about more pressing mental health issues and isolation.
Them even attempting to pass this law shows their fundamental misunderstanding of teenagers. It’s like these old, dinosaur-aged men (because that’s what they are) see a person under 25 and go “omg it’s a child!” But people of the ages 14, 15 and 16 are at an age where they are maturing, growing and learning to think for themselves. Treating them like they don’t have the critical thinking skills to choose how they want to respond to bullying or harmful things on social media is utterly stupid. Taking this choice away from them will only serve to harm their development and independency in this stage of life. As well as the fact that teens are already finding ways to get around this law when it hasn’t even been passed yet, showing how the government is underestimating the determination of teenagers when given a challenge.
Anyway, comment, hate on me, share your own opinions or completely ignore this post, I don’t really care. Just God I hope the government wakes up and thinks about not passing this bill or at least Lowering the age to 13 or 14.

There some good news about the SM ban, The law does not come into force for another 12 months and is likely to face a high court challenge.
Fingers crossed! - either way there's no way in hell the labour or liberal party is getting my vote.
Bunch of performative bullshit fuck wits they are.

So if you didn't know, the other day a bill was passed in Australia that will (try to) ban everyone under 16 from social media, it takes place about a year from now. The Australian Government does not have any proper plans in place to uphold/enforce this as of now.
With that all being said, though this ban will likely not effect me personally, I think it's stupid and a waste of time. Social media accounts now a days not only serve as a form of communication between friends and peers, but also as an archive of a person's life. Not only that, but I also think this ban will directly make the problem they have with social media worse. There is already a lack of education around how to stay safe on social media, but with this ban in place I have a feeling (knowing the Australian school system) that they will limit/stop completely the education around social media as not to "encourage it".
Sorry this is kinda just a rant and I don't really know where to go from here, I just needed somewhere to articulate my thoughts.
