The carrion crow is one smart cookie! It often said that the crow has a brain similar to that of a three year old. They are able to solve problems and even recognize humans! One study showed that they would target a certain mask wearer despite what he was wearing being different from what they originally wore when they were bothering the crowd. Theriotype List

So, to start out, for context, I think we've all seen a skeptic comment about how all therians are only "cool" animals. I personally have always enjoyed keeping up with those with "rarer" theriotypes and even using them as examples when these kinds of arguments are brought up, so I've decided to do a little bit of a personal project, that being creating a huge list of the wide variety within the therian community. Below is the list I've created so far, sorted by general species, then adding in subspecies/breeds, all in alphabetical order.

Please keep in mind and understand that for now, I am only putting Earthen animals on this list, mainly so I and the post can keep up, because there's a LOT here already and I know there are hundreds more out there. Maybe in the future I'll make another list with mythical/fictional/etc. kintypes, or someone else can do that for me, you have my full permission, just let me know, but for now, just Earthen animals.

There are 8 brackets, with 208 species featured! Ranges were determined either using the self-report feature added to the submission box or with eBird sightings. "Cosmopolitan" is a bracket involving species of birds which were found on at least three continents, regardless of which they were submitted for. "Eurasia" are birds which seem to appear equally between Europe and Asia (majority of the continent, not just Middle East). "the Americas" includes all of the Americas, with US birds removed- granted, some Canadian or Mexican birds can show up in the US, but they're not common enough backyard birds (imo) to have been disqualified.

this fierce competitor hails from the australian outback, where it's been honing its skills as a hunter and protector of its territory. but tonight, it's stepping into a whole new arena, ready to take on any and all challenges in the ring. and listen to that signature call - some call it a laugh, but to its opponents, this is a warning. so get ready, because tonight, the kookaburra is here to prove that it's not just a cute bird - it is a force to be reckoned with!

IN THE RED CORNER, we have a combatant that's bold, beautiful, and boasts lightning fast reflexes, the allen's hummingbird!

with the ability to hover mid-air and to move at incredible speeds, the allen's hummingbird is a master at aerial combat - and it knows it. this tiny fighter is highly aggressive and has been known to fend off birds magnitudes larger than it, including hawks and kestrels. you'll be able to recognize this bird from the loud, bee-like buzzing from those mighty wings, but you'll want to check out these vocalizations, too - a series of chirps that starts off slow, but speeds up much like an engine revving. with its iridescent feathers in the spotlight, the allen's hummingbird looks ready to take on any opponent that dares to step into the ring with it.

hi! i'm really loving icarus, you're a wonderful writer! but i just had a quick question. i love the flock graphics, and they're super helpful! would it be possible for you to maybe list the species of birds for the main 'characters' of the story as well? you don't have to post example photos or anything crazy, but i think just a list like that would be helpful too. sometimes i forget who has what kind of wings, and i think having a list so i can google image the bird would be great.

Lesser Flamingo

Don't let the name of this bird fool you, the Lesser Flamingo is actually quite metal. Their favorite breeding ground is a lake where almost nothing else can survive, relying on the toxicity of the lake in order to keep off predators. However, these fine fellows are near threatened, even though they are the most numerous species of flamingo. Lets hope they can rock on for a long time. Learn More!

Australian Kestrel

One of the smallest kinds of falcons, they do not rely on speed to catch their prey (mainly that of bugs). They often hover as they hunt over grasslands, and it will sometimes rely on bushfires in order to hunt. As insects hop away from the flames, the Australian kestrel makes its move. Learn More!

Going off a mix of look, temperament, and breed history for this

Rae: Rhodesian Ridgeback (protective, family-oriented dogs)

Robin: Basenji (known as the "barkless dog", their vocalizations are more like yodeling)

Madison: Portuguese Water Dog (aquatic dog, strong-willed and independent)

Ophelia: Cane Corso (powerful and intimidating, but most of the time is a gentle giant)

Gia: Italian Greyhound (poor anxious thing...)

Jasper: Catahoula Leopard Dog (state dog of Louisiana, intelligent and energetic but known to be good family dogs for active families)

Kestrel: Mountain Cur (small working dogs, bred for hunting and farming, adventurous and extremely intelligent)

Katherine: Bluetick Coonhound (I mean, of course, for a Tennessee girl)

Quinn: Australian Kelpie (bred to herd sheep or cattle, extremely quick and athletic and work well in teams)

Eris: Saluki (one of the oldest recognized dog breeds, originally bred in Egypt and the Middle East, known to be protective and "affectionate but not demonstrative")

Nikoletta: Staffordshire Terrier (much like other bull terriers, they get a bad rap due to the illegal dogfighting industry, but can actually be very affectionate and loyal dogs when placed in a family setting)

I love it when I read a book that isn't set in the real world and my brain just starts handing out random accents to characters like free candy, geographic and demographic logic be damned.

Like sure, all the Rainwings are Australian (except Glory bc she was raised in the cave) but then so are Sky and Wren? Scarlet and Peril are Scottish, but Flame is Spanish and Kestrel and Ruby are American, but all the Leafwings are Scottish too despite being from another continent *UNLESS* it's Sequoia and Hazel who just have plain American accents, or...Willow who my brain just defaulted to being French Creole???

My brain just comes up with accents on the spot and if it does too many it starts bleeding the accents between characters and it's just. Reading is fun yall

Name Meaning: Powerful Hidden Vulture 

Time: 770,000 to 55,000 years ago (Chibanian to Tarantian stage of the Pleistocene epoch, Quaternary period) 

Location: Throughout Australia, including Kalamurina, the Wellington Caves, and the Nullarbor Plain 

Today, there are no vultures in Australia. In fact, until recently, it seemed fairly clear that no vultures had lived in Australia - but now, we know they did! Originally thought to be an eagle, Cryptogyps was on the small size for a vulture, only bigger than the living Hooded Vulture - though it was about the size of the wedge-tailed eagle. However, it was proportioned similarly to other vultures, and between that and its great range across the entirety of Australia, it is logical to conclude that it lived similarly to other vultures, feeding primarily on carrion and going great distances to find it. It did not have the right musculature to be an active hunter like eagles and hawks. As such, Cryptogyps was a vital part of its environment, reducing the spread of disease and recycling nutrients and energy back into the food web like vultures today. Cryptogyps lived alongside a wide variety of weird megafuana present in Australia during the last ice age, including marsupial lions, giant demon-ducks (mihirungs), giant hippo-sized wombats, sheep-sized and fossorial echidnas, short-faced kangaroos, giant koalas, thylacines, giant maleefowls, huge monitor lizards, large crocodilians, and giant pythons - as well as cassowaries, regular kangaroos, emus, and other large animals that remain today. It was a weird place of which Cryptogyps was a small and important part, and would have been a regular sight in the skies to the first Indigenous Australians to settle on the continent!

Name Meaning: Diurnal Hawk-Owl from the Miocene 

Time: 7.25  to 11.1 million years old (Tortonian stage of the Miocene epoch, Neogene period)

Location: Liushu Formation, Gansu Province, China

Miosurnia was a small owl, weighing around 318 grams and having a similar overall size to its living relatives, the modern hawk-owls. And, like its living relatives, Miosurnia was diurnal (based on its eye shape) - a rarity in owls, mainly seen in Hawk-Owls and putative early members of the group. As such, this small clade of diurnal owls has a longer and more extensive range than previously thought. If so, it may have eaten a variety of small diurnal mammals, similar to small kestrels in many habitats today. This allowed it to live alongside a wide variety of other avian predators, including many Old World Vultures and falcons. Like other diurnal owls, Miosurnia lived in a large open habitat, and this was one right after the great grassland explosion of the Miocene. As the polar ice sheets grew, these large open habitats expanded across the planet, greatly affecting many ecologies. In addition to other birds of prey, Miosurnia shared its habitat with Panraogallus, ostriches, sandgrouse, Ergilornithids, and many mammals such as Cahlicotheris, Gomphotheres, horses, giraffids, and buff hyenas.
