Are we having fun yet?
It’s been aeons since my last post. Well, a couple of months. But time is relative. As is my aunt. I endeavour to practise art in some shape or form every day. Sometimes, it’s drawing and painting. Other times it’s writing poetry or prose. Here are a few pieces of art I’ve been doing these past few months. I do it for the mindfulness aspect – the process rather than the result. I find…

Do you have any tips for deciding whether to use first or third person and present or past tense??
1st vs. 3rd Person | Present vs. Past Tense
1st Person is Best Used When...
The antagonist is abstract/is a psychological barrier that must be overcome
It's easier to weave backstory/info with experience.
Immediacy and toppling high stakes are important for the reader to keep rooting for your MC (like in the case of many fantasy novels)
You have an unreliable narrator.
You struggle to have a consistent tone/perspective. (third person not executed well will easily get confusing)
For literary fiction
3rd Person is Best Used When...
You have multiple MCs, following them more or less equally throughout.
You have freedom to move from wide, establishing views and closed-in views - this is good for conveying the theme.
You find yourself injecting too much of yourself in your writing and wish to prevent this.
You want the reader to view the MC more objectively, sometimes the narrator even offering commentary.
You wish to make use of dramtic irony (the reader knows more than the MC)
Present Tense is Best For...
The majority of novels are written in the past tense, and would be the easier one to execute if you're a first-time writer. However, present tense is certainly not inferior.
It feels like a movie: it allows you to mimic the action and suspense found in film.
It intensifies emotions: it gives the feeling of "we're in this together", the reader experiencing things with the MC side to side.
Works well with Deep POV: Deep POV uses third person narrators like 1st person, sticking with one character's mind for closeness.
Best for short-time-frame stories with constant action.
Works well for unreliable narrators: Since the narrative is so close to the action, it is easy to have a narrator that leaves out details.
However...
Readers can feel "claustrophobic, always pressed up against the immediate" (Philip Pullman quote)
Time shifts can be awkward - you're locked in the present more or less; unless you use flashbacks/dreams (which are disruptive)
It's harder to execute because you need to capture the texture of the present while acknowledging that the past and the future still exist.
It mimics film - you cannot just jump characters, speak directly to the reader or do time skips.
Books written in present tense (and are still good!)
The Hunger Games series
Bleak House by Charles Dickens
Rabbit, Run by John Updike
Ulysses by James Joyce
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque
Fight Club by Chuck Palhniuk
The White Queen by Philippa Gregroy
Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Glimmers of the Past
- gojo satoru x reader
genre: just a little angst
In the midst of the kitchen, Satoru found himself surrounded by utensils and ingredients, determined to surprise Y/n with a delicious homemade dinner. However, his culinary skills left much to be desired. As he attempted to follow the recipe, the sauce burned, the pasta turned sticky, and the vegetables resembled more of an abstract art piece than an edible dish.
Y/n, observing the scene from the table, couldn't help but laugh at Satoru's desperate attempts to salvage the culinary disaster. Amidst laughter, she approached him and embraced him gently, reassuring him that the gesture meant more than the outcome. Satoru's eyes radiated adoration and love for the woman now in his arms, showering her with soft kisses all over her face.
Deciding to leave behind the culinary debacle, Satoru opted to order takeout. Together, they enjoyed an improvised dinner, sharing laughs as they relaxed on the couch, wrapped in blankets and watching cliché movies.
Satoru always made sure to demonstrate his love for Y/n. Despite his youth, he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He was deeply in love with every aspect of Audrey: her voice, her soft hair, her smooth skin, and her exquisite aroma.
-
His heart ached with pain and betrayal as the evidence unfolded before him. Evidence confirming his alleged cooperation and collusion with Geto Suguru. First, the loss of his best friend, and now, the betrayal of the one he believed was the love of his life.
"I didn't do anything, Toru, it's false, you have to believe me," she pleaded, but Satoru was blinded by anger and pain. He shouted without listening, wounded to the core. You understood his pain, but he was also hurting you, accusing you unfairly with words filled with hatred and contempt.
"Leave, or you will regret it," he snapped, his tone icy and filled with hate, cutting you like a sharp dagger. It pained you to feel those bitter emotions directed towards you. You tried to approach, but his infinity was active, something that had never happened before. Wiping away your tears, you decided to leave…
-
And there you were, shining like an angel, ethereal as he remembered you. So close, yet so far away. He watched as you laughed, illuminated by the jokes of one of your fellow teachers. A knot formed in the depths of his stomach, rising up his throat like a blazing fire as he watched you share laughs with that man who was clearly flirting with you.
Satoru knew your gestures, your looks, your laughter, and he could sense that you didn't perceive the true intentions of that individual, just as it had been with him in the past. A familiar feeling of helplessness and pain washed over him as he watched the scene from a distance, trapped in a sea of turbulent emotions.
It had been more than six years since the last time he saw you, and, by all the gods, you were even more stunning. Your hair now cascaded like a waterfall down your back, framing your face with a beauty that had matured, yet still retained the same tenderness that had always characterized you. What never changed was your gaze, that pair of eyes that always hypnotized him, making him nervous like the first time he approached you. Those eyes, seemingly normal, were magical and unique to him, capable of unleashing a storm of emotions within him. Now, that last look you gave him continued to haunt him, filled with pain.
He didn't rest for a moment until he found the truth, and when he finally unearthed it, he was consumed by a burning desire to disappear. He loathed himself with a searing hatred that devoured him from within; he had falsely accused you. He fought to find you, but, as expected, you slipped masterfully through the shadows, out of his reach. There you were, just a few meters away, perhaps unaware of his presence, and your eyes, as if they could read his mind, observed him with a mixture of confusion and curiosity..

Do they keep a diary/a journal?
Mal - yes, actually. But no gross feelings stuff, ew. Just drawings. ...Of various levels of "disturbing". (Peak being begining of D2, of course)
Jay - nah. Better stuff to do. Also lowkey paranoid it'll be stolen.
Evie - yes, technically, multiple. She keeps one journal to jot down what was when done to any potions she's brewing (the correct scientific procedure), her fashion one, of course, for whatever designs she dreams of, and lastly, one to note down orders and payments for her shop.
Carlos - nah. He's got a collection of loose papers with important and "important" info on them. His cousins still keep finding them in Hell Hall. Jay has to move them from his parts of the room regularly. Mal found papers stuck in between her journal.
Uma - no. WAY more important shit to do, and she finds it way too sentimental. She keeps records of stuff important for the running of her crew, but doesn't consider it a journal, rather a public record.
Harry - yes. To the surprise if absolutely no one, the thing he writes most about is Uma. There are several original songs and poems for her as well. He wouldn't mind if she found it.
Gil - I wanna say yes, he tries. He's not very consistent though. The only thing he writes about is his friends and crewmates – he accidentally puts it down in the common space of the ship often, and most of the crewmates picked it up once. Cos, y'know. You see, you take. If they read it, they began blushing furiously under the excited "My friends are SO cool" Gil wrote and gave it back to him without a word.
Claudine - once she stops living with her father, yes, though it took some convincing. She doesn't write regularly, though, because she just doesn't know what to write, and is afraid of putting her thoughts on the paper. Later, she writes poems in letters so small it's illegible, since poetry masks the true self a bit.
Harriet - yes. She writes regularly, though not a lot of feelings stuff. She writes poems and vague stories draws whatever comes to her mind (mostly abstract stuff) and keeps it tightly locked up in her cabin, since that shit is DARK. Smee twins accidentally found it once and Sammy kept complaining they were afraid of her drawings for two weeks straight.
CJ - ...she tries to. It never lasts more than two days in row. But she adds new disjointed entry every time she's reminded that her older siblings do so. It's actually extremely disturbing in different way than Harriet's since she has ZERO ability to self-censor.
Freddie - two. One for music and one for dreams and card readings.
Celia - one. Dreams and Cards and Friends on the other side. Though, technically, both sisters share another one, written in cryptic code and abbreviations and moved from place to place with regularity but without a set schedule. This one is about secrets of the Isle residents, the ones they bother or dare to write down.
Dizzy - I wanna say yes, actual diary, feelings and all. To utter exasperation of all her older relatives.
Anthony - no, keeping tabs on the salon is enough, thank you.
Dulcia - look, my girl deserves a Burn Book.
Ginny - not really. If she absolutely NEEDS something noted down, she tells Anthony. Exception being medical notes at the Escape but she delegates paperwork away any time she can. Also, I feel like her handwriting is borderline illegible to anyone but her and the three people she shares mental disturbances with (Maddy, Anthony, Harriet)
Maddy - she keeps tabs on the Apothecary and like Evie, writes down the shit she's synthetising. It's only correct to do.
Ivy - Yeah she gets a burn book too. She deserves it <3. It's in one notebook with scraps from fashion magasines and and some kaligrams. (Again, that's a form of self-censure. Can't read it, so it isn't there.)
I think I ran out of Isle kids, so AKs (all regarding a diary):
Audrey - canonically she does, I have nothing else to add.
Ben - he tries to, but he doesn't manage to write regularly, what with being a CHILD KING and all. It's healthy for him tho. Took the habit from his mother.
Chad - I refuse to believe this boy has a diary. He views it as "useless" and "too feminine".
Jane - yes, actual diary full of feelings. Starting each entry with "dear diary". She locks it religiously though, since her mother can and will read it if give an oppurtunity to.
Ally - yes and frankly it should be studied and/or published (with different names for the sake of privacy, but i'd pay a lot to read a diary of Ally Liddel of Wonderland)
Lonnie - ...no. she tried to, few times, but never quite managed more than few entries in a row. She doesn't particularly like sitting still, and fancies the thought of someone actually reading what she thinks about certain stuff even less.
Jordan - ...she uses her blogs and vlogs as a diary. The more private ones. Not her Drama Channel.
