auditioned for vocal jazz. Gah I love it when my voice shakes 🤭 (kill me now)
There’s no chance I got in, but at least she heard more of my voice. While sick. And not warmed up.

Y’all help, I’m trying out for our schools musical (hadestown) and I’m hoping for Persephone but I have no clue what to sing for auditions
Like I’m not allowed to do something from the musical but I don’t know what else to do, and my friend was like: do something from ✨a✨ musical, and that’s so fucking unhelpful because I can’t think of any songs from other musicals that give Persephone vibes

I am post-audition and I think it went really really good!! It was an interesting experience, because I actually sang 3 times? I first walked in, greeted my accompanist and the room, gave my music to the accompanist, and then did my audition after introducing myself. Sang my first song, went very well! I was a little nervous, but had fun with it!
Then, they asked me if I had prepared any other material (thank god I did!) and they had me present that as well. That part went okay, it was one of my safe audition pieces.
Then, they asked me if I had time, and would be willing to do a song from the show. Which I said yes, and they told me which song and where to start. So I did that, and then they said “thank you so much for your time!” I thanked them and left!
Overall? It was a very unique experience! But it definitely was a very good reminder to always be prepared for the unexpected! This is a show near and dear to my heart, but I’m still glad I took time before auditions to really familiarize myself with the music even more. I showed them that I was prepared and flexible. And I think I showed repertoire that was relevant to the show/roles I wanted, but still have a range of my acting/singing? I won’t know til callbacks come out, which won’t be for awhile! But like I said, I’m just happy to do whatever possible I can for this show! Whether that’s on stage, or behind the scenes!
Also (little sneak-peak at the audition rehearsal process for those interested. This is a clip from when I gave one of the show songs a few tries. Not a perfect clip for sure but a clip from practicing, because we’re not afraid of growth in this household!)

Hello! Saw the show on Sunday and loved every second! I'm also a non-union performer who is neurodivergent (ADHD with anxiety comorbidity though I suspect it could be something more) and I've lately been struggling with navigating the audition process and its characteristics (loud waiting rooms, disruption of routine, long travel days, over stimulation of NYC itself) with my how my brain works.
I also live a bit far from the city so I usually need to weigh pros and cons when deciding what to go out for. And I find I'm constantly weighing the effects on my mental state against the opportunities it could give me. Are their things you or your cast mates do to help accommodate during situations like that? Do you think their are accommodations that the theatre community could put in place in audition spaces to better include neurodiverse talent?
To be clear, the actual audition part of it never bothers me it's always the easiest part. I just find I feel completely fried by the time I get in the room because of what it took mentally to get myself there.
Either way How to Dance in Ohio is such a breath of fresh air and I hope it manages to find life after Broadway either on tour or in schools or maybe a spot off-broadway. It has so much more good to give.
Ooooof. I feel this. All of it. I'm originally from northern Westchester and I spent many exhausting commutes doing exactly this.
I would honestly say the best thing you can do for yourself is to join Equity if you are eligible. It's a better audition experience all around, you can sign up for appointments in advance on the member portal and view projects that accept self-tapes, AND it will get you in the room for better jobs.
If you aren't eligible yet or just don't feel ready to compete on that level yet, I'd recommend focusing more on local projects over the big NYC cattle calls. I don't know exactly where you live or what your regional/community theatre scene is like, but I do know that those theaters are the ones that are struggling the most right now and could use people who are passionate and want to build their resumes. It's a lot easier to get seen and get cast, you'll be able to keep your day job and not tunnel-vision your life around waiting on line for crappy nonunion tours that charge Broadway prices but pay minimum wage, AND you will likely meet a lot of people who will get to know you much better and more personally than a casting director ever could in a 2-minute window.
Keep in mind, also, that when you walk into a professional audition and a casting director looks at your resume, they don't care how much you were paid for a job or what kind of contract you were on. And they don't care how you got your Equity card. The only people who care about that stuff are bitter judgmental actors who need the gatekeeping to feel better about themselves (and no matter what your answer is, they won't like you anyway). The people who actually matter only care that you're on time, prepared, friendly, open to direction, and right for the role they need.
As for actually doing the professional NYC audition grind, here are some pro-tips:
-Opt for appointments and self-tapes over "open calls" whenever possible.
-CONTINUE being selective about the projects you go out for. Trust me, I did many years of the "throw all the spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks" method, and it doesn't work, and it will only burn you out more.
-Don't overthink your audition material. You don't need exact 16-bar cuts of ten different in your book for every style of musical theatre. You can do the "overdone" songs and monologues if they fit who you are and the roles you can conceivably play. It's New York. Everything is overdone. YOU are not overdone.
-Dress comfortably. Sounds obvious, but it took me way too long to realize that no, really, I do not have to wear heels to an audition. Be strategic with layers.
-Get a rolling suitcase over a backpack. Way less strain.
-Noise. Cancelling. Headphones. Also, make playlists of your "comfort" songs and your "motivation" songs and your "wind-down" songs and your "zone-out" songs so you have predictable, appropriate background noise to whatever you're doing--commuting, waiting in the holding room, eating lunch, etc. Preferably songs that are not from musicals and have nothing to do with whatever shows you're auditioning for. Auditioning is a job and you need a work-life balance there too.
-Do something else in the city unrelated to auditioning or performing. Go to a museum or a park or just a cute coffee shop where you can just EXIST and not perform.
I hope these help <3

...he saw a classified ad in the newspaper for the Bishop’s Company Repertory Players, which was looking for actors, and decided to audition for a place in the troupe. In what has become yet another integral part of his legend, Shepard was handed a book of Shakespeare’s plays at the audition but was so nervous—and so completely untrained as an actor—that he read not only his assigned dialogue but also the stage directions accompanying it.

REMINDER: DO NOT EVER PAY TO AUDITION
Just cause I came across some bullshit pay to audition scam while scrolling through backstage today (got taken down within about 10 minutes).
No legit project will make you pay to audition. Nor will they require you to pay to take some class from them before they let you audition.
Sometimes, in the classical world, you may have to pay for an accompanist. That is it. That is the only time you should be paying for something for an audition.
Even if you're a kid doing pay-to-play do a show camps, you only pay after you're cast or if you are guaranteed a role. Not before.
(Edit after the fact: some YAPs (Young Artist Programs) will ask for an application fee. If you're applying via YAPTracker, it should be legitimate).

NEW CASTING CALL
Hello!, since Nathan’s story will end soon with the Hazbin Hotel journey in episode 5 that means Nathan will move on to the helluva boss journey. But the problem is there are empty roles that require help. Roles like Octavia Goetia, Lucifer Morningstar and Striker are open on Casting Call. There’s also another role which is Nathan’s role. Nathans role would take a lot of effort and I believe in those who wish to be able to take that chance. If you can’t audition on Casting Call then you can contact me on my Discord Server. Reminder that this will end in 11 days. Once the roles are set then episode 5 shall start production. Hope to see what you guys can do with the auditions! - Unadventure Leader Alex

Interesting interview with Katee Sackhoff and Bryce Dallas Howard. I'd probably recommend it to any aspiring actors if I knew any.
I was interested to hear she was chosen to direct "Sanctuary" the first episode where Grogu ("Baby") gets to move around because she had worked with the Legacy Effects puppeteers on various films as an actor.
And she mentioned Gwen Stacy and how happy she was to see Spider-Gwen's story in Into the Spider-verse. Her role as Gwen Stacy in Spider-man 3 is not super memorable but it's cool that the character is still meaningful to her.

Today’s the day! Auditioning for my dream show today! This is a show I’ve been preparing for, for quite literally, years. I fell in love with the movie as a kid, and the musical adaptation as well. The movie is very nostalgic for me because I used to watch it all the time at my nana’s house on VHS and I remember every sleepover, I’d ask to watch this movie and fell in love with it every single time. I remember seeing the stage version for the first time and just falling in love all over again.
Audition days can be extremely stressful so I’m doing a bit today to stay relaxed. There’s definitely a role that I’d love and be honored to get, but honestly, just being in this show to begin with would be such a dream. I’m staying hopeful, but also trying to be realistic! But it’s a very exciting day, and I’m absolutely just hoping for the best!

I'm auditioning for White Christmas at my local community theater in a few weeks.
It's been over 20 years since I've been in a show or done musical theatre (not counting karaoke 🎤 😂)
Suggestion for a capella song from a classic musical I should audition with. So far, I'm considering 'Til There Was You' from The Music Man, but open to other better options.
Thanks friends,
