Good Huntress Luz

As an energetic, peppy but rather socially awkward child often in her own world full of witches and adventure, Luz was unsure where to go next after a rather unfullfilling and uneventfull highschool... in the end, attracted by its diversified program, from more othodox subjects like history and biology, to classes on occultism and astrology; and by the location itself: Salem, Massachussets, away enough from Connecticut for a change of air but not too much far to remain close to family, she signed up for the Byrgenwerth University.

She was surprise to discovered that two of the most esteemed students, two brothers, originated from her own hometown.

It was during a challenge with other students that she discovered a decrepit crypt beneath the mansion of the campus; a tomb designed to hide a flask full of a strange, dense liquid... it was another challenge that made her drink the entire thing... and thus, the nightmare begin.

"Dang kid... I saw folk going crazy over some blood but this is absurd..."

Now transported into another world and infected with the wretched blood, her only salvation is also her wildest dream come truth: an infusion of Titan Blood and a spark of magic.

Under the wing of a mysterious old magic Huntresses living in a ghostly house, she's harmed and ready to get herself more Titan Blood and finally become the witch she always dreamed of... what's the problem if she'll have to hunt, kill and drain a bunch of monstrous creatures to do so? The traditional way to hunt Beasts is with a combination of cold steel and firearm, in this case: a meter long serrated bat equipped with a mechanism that release the teeth turning it into a giant serrated whip, accompanied by a shotgun loaded with quicksilver.

All made by the Clawthorne Workshop, a once famous and higly sought after workshop that is said to be around since the Scourge of Beasts ever began and set off the standard for beasts' hunting all over the Boiling Isles.

The Workshop is now in ruin and abandoned... something Luz doesn't fully understand since she lives there and it's still operational, even if run by a single individual... it's also fair to say that her own mind often seems to not work right since arriving on the Isles, especially in the few occasions where she sleep.

The Sun enters Aries II The Crown on March 30 at 1:25 am EDT. The Crown contains the degree of exaltation of the Sun; Austin Coppock certainly noted this association when he gave this decan this name, and T. Susan Chang called it Kingdom of Gold when comparing it with Tarot’s three of wands — the man staking his claim to the high ground as he watches ships travel on a sun-touched sea toward the destinations he commanded. He has a lot of hobbies, such as hiking and making loom bracelets, if it exists it was probably a hobby of theirs

Has always been interested in how personifications/states came to be, most just appeared one day, some are related to each other or other countries, while a very small group (pretty much just the OG13 and Louisiana) are related to humans, it’s all very interesting and mildly terrifying to him

Trained marksman, owns two guns but rarely uses them unless their stressed, then it’s off to the shooting range (or ya know, he'll just shut down, honestly him going to the range doesn't happen too often when he's stressed but it is always an option)

Ghosts of New Eden and the Occult in Colonial America:

While playing Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, I was tickled when one of the first people you meet describes himself and his father as demonologists. That might seem out of place in colonial America, given the nature of the religious milieu at the time, but occultism was all over the place in the colonies.

Despite the belief that magical practice was Satanic in nature, fortune telling, palm reading and particularly astrology were very common practices, and even alchemists could be found in some places. Wealthy people often kept books on magic and demonology in their personal libraries, and one governor of Connecticut had a copy of Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy and some of John Dee's books in his collection. Even the family of Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, practiced types of folk magic.

But how could people in a society built on what we would call extreme Christianity practice these arts? Well, faith never stopped anyone in Continental Europe, so many of those traditions carried over, but it was probably also the distance from standard religious ritual as seen in Catholicism that allowed folk magic to fill that void to some degree (the channel Esoterica on YouTube dives into this quite nicely). Even many monotheists today have spiritual beliefs and practices that aren't properly sanctioned by their religious texts or authorities, so it shouldn't come as a shock that people have, and always will, forge their own spirituality regardless of the "rules".

Just another reason that the setting of Banishers really tickles me.

As a fellow Aquarius, I can definitely understand the limits of your social battery, and I think Azriel would as well. He himself, with all the love he has for friends and family, gets tired and needs time to himself.

Mor on the other hand, would help you plan the party of a century. I think that bubbly, chaotic energy may even rub off on you and make you want to socialise longer, but I don’t think she’d blame you if you snuck away for some peace and quiet.

I can see both Mor and Azriel stepping up beside you to protect your friends. After all, they’ve both come from traumatic familial backgrounds, and loyalty to those they love is extremely important to them.

As far as timeliness goes, I feel like both Mor and Azriel are not morning birds, for two very different reasons. Mor loves to party, so late nights and even later mornings. Azriel because Rhys’ tasks for him are never ending. So there’s definitely a balance there.

I think it’s inspiring that you’ve adopted the role of step-mom, and I think both Mor and Azriel would agree. Mor, like you, has a fear of childbirth stemming from her own childhood in the Court of Nightmares, so I feel she would acclimate to that role with your guidance. As for Azriel, I just think he loves kids, whether they are his or not.

Let's Get to Know My MC

Layla Emery-Park is the MC of my reboot/rewrite of one of my first novels, The Daughter of Fire and Rain. I created a moldboard and I thought I'd share some fun facts about her to introduce her to everyone!

Layla wants to be a fashion designer, sparked by her love of MyScene, Bratz, Barbie, and Polly Pocket in the early 2000s

Her dad travels a lot and tries to be present via texts and video calls but it's often her and her mom on their own

Her mom runs a coffeehouse on the first floor and they live above the shop in an apartment in the city of Goldwater Harbor (a fictional city somewhere in New England--maybe Massachusetts or Connecticut?)

In order to hone her crafting and sewing skills, Layla has become one of the main costumers for her high school's theatre department and as a result is fairly well-known among that crowd. She always knows a guy who can help her with something when she needs a favor.

This makes her fairly popular in her high school, many students know who she is and like her well enough

She's gathered a bunch of. . . interesting skills through her interest, like metal-working

Her best friend, Sabrina, is her usual model and the two of them dream of entering the fashion industry together when they grow up

Layla still collects fashion dolls and she reads a lot of shoujo manga (her favorite is Fruits Basket, but she is very fond of Nana and Paradise Kiss for very obvious reasons) and plays otome games on her phone

Has always felt a connection to dragons in folklore and mythology. Might have something to do with that birthmark shaped like a dragon that her mom wants her to cover up. . .

Layla is a Sanrio addict whose favorite character is Cinnamoroll and she knows the full lore and is willing to inflict it on unwilling and unknowing passerby

She also loves re-arranging her room and will do so on a whim and when stressed

Her type is brunette nerds and boy is that going to be relevant in-story. . .

Her favorite pastry is the tried and true blueberry muffin

Because of growing up in a coffee shop, she does love sugary coffee concoctions and is always down to try her mom's new stuff

Hello, what are your headcanons for the Heroes birthdays? And or their zodiac sign (if you’re in that)? I’ve seen people give different answers (like January or April for Hogan) and was curious to know your own opinions!

Thanks so much for the ask, I’ve been looking forward to answering this!! (and sorry it took so long) I’ve been thinking about this ever since I first started watching the show, and your question finally got me to sit down to sort out all of my thoughts. 😂 This is what I’m gonna do: list a birth date, birth year, age in 1942 (since that’s the year we’re given in the pilot), zodiac sign, and my reasoning for all of the above since I don’t wanna just give you random dates and years with no explanation, I’d like to show y'all how I got there lol. I’m not super into zodiac and astrology stuff, but since we’re not really given any information for birth dates I figured I’d use characteristics from different zodiac signs to narrow it down. Besides, it was kinda fun to look at the traits and see what matched who. I’m no expert in astrology, though. All of this was from a quick web search of traits so take that for what you will.

I listed these in the order from who I thought was the oldest to the youngest. So Hogan would be the oldest, followed by Kinch, LeBeau, Newkirk, and then Carter would be the youngest imo. This is certainly gonna be way more than you asked for, so sorry in advance. I got excited.😂 Side note: I did not use any of the actor’s real ages and I didn't take them into consideration, and I may have missed some actual canon details that point to a more accurate birth date/year. I originally was like “none of the heroes are under 25” because I wanted them all to be fairly close in age, and I could only make Hogan so young and still be reasonable. But the more I thought about it, the more I started to not like that hc because they’re a very diverse team. These guys all come from different countries or states, and they come from all walks of life., so it makes sense for that diversity to extend to their age range. Therefore, I ended up going a different route with that. (I’m just clarifying that here because I’ve discussed this with some friends before, and I’ve since changed my ideas on it.)

Anywho (as if that intro wasn’t long enough) presenting the actual hcs now! (and quick shout out to @frau-wilhelm-klink for beta reading this for me :D)

Hogan

Birth date: April 11

Birth year: 1907-1908

Age in 1942: 34-35

Zodiac: Aries for sure. I mean, look at some of these traits:

Plus this quote I found: “The first sign of the zodiac, Aries loves to be number one. Naturally, this dynamic fire sign is no stranger to competition. Bold and ambitious, Aries dives headfirst into even the most challenging situations—and they'll make sure they always come out on top!” After reading all of this, you can’t tell me Hogan’s not an Aries.😂

Reasoning: Considering Hogan lists so many places that he’s lived or been to (like Connecticut, Ohio, Wisconsin, Chicago, and Indianapolis off the top of my head) I assume that he was probably a military brat, and I can see that playing a role in him joining the military before WW2 started. He probably went to university and did ROTC - you have to have a bachelor’s degree to be an officer - before graduating and joining the service as a second lieutenant. If we say he graduated high school at 18, then graduated college at 22, this would put us at the year 1929 - 1930. That gives us a little over 10 years for him to rise up in rank by the time the US becomes involved in the war. But he’s definitely a colonel by the time the US steps in…or has just become one, at any rate. Colonels were the ones you usually saw leading your bomber squadrons (and we know he commanded the 504th until he was shot down, although I do think it’s kinda humorous that the actual 504th was in the Pacific during the war). I think that about covers it.

Obviously, the requirements are different for becoming a colonel nowadays. (Until the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2019, an officer was required to have 22 years of cumulative service and be a lieutenant colonel for a minimum of 3 years.) However, it’s implied in the show that Hogan was young for a colonel. Some of those promotions could have come after the war had started where promotions were occuring a lot faster than normal. (From second lieutenant the ranks go as follows: first lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, then colonel. Now I realize that’s five ranks to jump in the span of 11-12 years…but some of those promotions could have come after the war had started where, like I said before, people rose up in rank very quickly.)

As for the April birthdate, in the episode “Hogan Gives A Birthday Party” Biedenbender asks Klink if he’s prepared for a birthday. Klink (being confused) says something along the lines of, “Oh, of course! We’ve been preparing for months…wait, do you mean the Führer’s birthday?” I’m assuming Hitler’s birthday - which was on April 20th - was coming up, so I just went with a date that was a bit before that point.

Birth date: August 30

Birth year: 1911-1912

Age in 1942: 30-31

Zodiac: Virgo, and here are the traits that make me think that:

Analytical mind

Modest (shy (okay maybe not necessarily shy, but quiet) and humble)

Reliability 

Patience 

Here's a couple of quotes I think represent his Virgo traits as well: “Smart, sophisticated, and kind, Virgo gets the job done without complaining.” and “You're funny. You don't always let your humor shine through, but anyone who knows you well is totally aware that you can make people collapse in laughter. Your wry sense of humor and sharp observation skills can't be beat.”

Reasoning: I made Kinch the second oldest because of his position as second-in-command (so Carter outranking him and not being in this position makes sense if Carter is younger, but I’ll elaborate on that later when I get to Carter.) It also makes sense because of his relationship with Hogan. Obviously being close in age isn’t the only factor in a friendship (heck, most of my friends are 10+ years older than me) but I’ll also elaborate more on this when I get to LeBeau. Kinch is also extremely level headed (for sure the only sane man in Stalag 13 + the keeper of the brain cell) so he’s either very mature for his age, or he’s a little older than the other guys (which I’ve obviously gone with the second option). He’s always come off as way more mature than the rest of the heroes, and he’s obviously someone Hogan trusts (not that Hogan doesn’t trust the other guys, you can just tell it’s a different kind of trust with Kinch), and I think that partially has to do with them being closer in age (which is another reason I made Hogan a little younger than most people hc). In “Is General Hammerschlag Burning?” where he meets up with a girl he went to high school with, it’s implied it’s been a while since he’s graduated so I also took that into consideration. Considering that he’s worked at the phone company and has done some boxing, I feel like this gives him enough time to have done some of this stuff between graduating and joining the military/being drafted into the military, if that makes sense. I went with August 30 because it falls within the dates for a Virgo. Also - and I don’t know why - Kinch just gives me August vibes.😂

Birth year: 1914

Age in 1942: 28

Reasoning: I do not know why, but there was a tiny voice in the back of my head just screaming 28 when I was trying to determine how old LeBeau might be 😂 so here we are. But the more I thought about it, it kinda actually works out, and here’s why: LeBeau is at that cusp of being mature but also not. Like one second he seems somewhat put together, and then the next he’s arguing with Carter and Newkirk like they’re teenagers (and it’s hilarious). Now I’d like to clarify something before I say this next bit: I am not implying that LeBeau has no friends on the team or that he is unloved. Anyway, we see Hogan and Kinch are pretty close and that Carter and Newkirk are the same way. LeBeau’s close with everybody, so putting him in the middle makes the most sense to me because he can relate to the older members of the team, as well as the younger. 

Other factors I considered are that he’s a very good cook, so I tried to give him enough time to have experience in the kitchen. He also mentions what appears to be a forced marriage (I don’t remember the episode it was from, but someone gets volunteered for something by Hogan and LeBeau makes a comment about how he got married the same way). This marriage could have very well been a situation where a girl LeBeau was seeing ended up pregnant, so considering the time period, it was natural that they got married. To me, this hints that LeBeau wasn’t ready to settle down and have a family. But then we see how he interacts with Wilhelmina in “LeBeau and the Little Old Lady” and you can tell that he really cares for her. (Considering this is towards the end of season 3, LeBeau would be in his early 30s) so now it seems like he is ready for that type of commitment. This is why I put LeBeau in his late twenties, because he seems to be close to growing into himself (for lack of a better term), but he still acts like a kid sometimes (affectionate lol). Obviously age isn’t the only factor in determining somebody’s maturity - that's not what I’m trying to imply at all. But for the sake of making it easier to determine a possible age for LeBeau, it's the route I took.

I thought it was so funny that listed under best careers for a Scorpio is “con artist” 😂 Also, here’s a couple of quotes that I thought fit him as well. “Scorpio tries so hard to seem tough that they sometimes cut off their vulnerable side entirely, seeming prickly, uncaring, and cold to outsiders. While expressing emotion is scary, learning how to do it is key for Scorpio, since presenting an "I don't care" veneer can only work for so long before it gets exhausting!” and “If a Scorpio is committed to someone or something, they stick with it. Their trust is hard to earn, but once they do trust someone, they dedicate their whole self to that person, and apply their classic determination to stand by friends, family, and partners.” I love how the last one could apply to Hogan, especially considering he was an officer (I kinda like to think that Newkirk and Carter would be fast friends though, which came as a surprise to Newkirk).

Reasoning: If y'all haven’t noticed, Newkirk’s impulse control is zero. I’m pretty sure the only reason he hasn’t killed anyone is because of Hogan. Hogan seems to have some of the same characteristics as Newkirk, but Hogan’s older and has learned to control himself a bit more. That’s partially why I hc Newkirk as being one of the younger heroes. Also - and I mean this affectionately - but just look at his friendship with Carter. Yeah, it’s a grumpy x sunshine pairing, but they’re both absolute goofballs. And have you ever noticed how sometimes the other guys would get on them for not doing their job well? I mean, maybe that’s cuz they were the two youngest of the group. Sure, Newkirk gives it right back to them, but I don’t think he ever starts it with anyone besides LeBeau, who would be the closest in age to him out of the older heroes in my hc. (I’d just like to clarify now that I do not condone the bullying that started to pick up in the later seasons. It was so out of character and I hated it…but that’s a discussion for another time and place.)

I feel like putting Newkirk at 24 also gives him time to kinda build his career as an entertainer. I hc him leaving home at around 16 and leaving to join the circus (putting us at the year 1934). Say he spends a couple of years there, and eventually ends up going solo and starts working as a magician, putting us roughly in the year 1936-1937. Now obviously he’s gotten really good at sleight of hand by this point, and he starts building up his career as a magician. He even starts dating a fan dancer. By the time the war starts in 1939, Newkirk was probably fairly well established, which leads me to believe he’d be drafted rather than joining voluntarily (which, being 20 going on 21 in 1939, is inevitable).

A couple of quotes: “Have you ever met someone who was sensitive and dreamy, and maybe their head was a little too stuck up in the clouds?” I wouldn’t say he’s always stuck up in the clouds, but he does have his moments. “Pisces is a very friendly sign, often finding themselves in the company of diverse people. They are selfless and always willing to help others.”

Reasoning: First off, please don’t come after me for making Carter the youngest. I am not trying to infantilize him. I mean Carter’s still out here talking about his sweetheart, and he was getting ready to potentially start a career as a pharmacist. To me, it indicates he’s one of the younger ones on the team because he’s basically just getting started. Hogan also makes a comment directed towards Carter in “The Purchasing Plan” referring to him as “cub scout”, so I also take that as a hint that he’s probably pretty young. Also mentioned in “The Purchasing Plan” is Carter going to business school, so I gave him four years for that (which if he graduated high school at 18, that would put him at 22 when he graduated from business school). Once he was out of school (assuming he graduated in May), this would give him about seven-ish months before the US became involved in WW2. (I know he ran a drug store, but he could’ve been working while he was in school too). 

Carter being younger than Kinch - yet being above him in rank - would explain why Kinch is seen as Hogan’s second-in-command. It would also explain why Newkirk often refers to him as Andrew or Carter, even though he also outranks him. (I also made them only one year apart, and they’re pretty good friends). I don’t think this is a sign of disrespect or underestimation, as Carter is still an important part of the core team of heroes, but it’s understandable that Hogan would want someone a little older in that position. Again, considering how a lot of people were being promoted quickly because there was a need for officers and NCOs, it’s very likely Carter was able to prove himself capable and quickly climb the ranks, even though he’s fairly young. Carter is also a bit naive at times and very much still figuring some stuff out. (I don’t mean this in a bad way, that’s just how it is in your early 20s.)  I like to think the several instances of him calling Hogan "boy", then correcting himself in a couple of seconds by  saying "sir" instead is a good example of this.😂

brief history.

born somewhere in connecticut, but their memories of the state are clouded and dense. born to parents who were happy, always smiling - an older brother, if kes can remember right, if they can still remember their little sister.

arson / fire / death; around the age of five, or maybe six - a mysterious fire took over their house, consuming everything in sight. and by some sort of sick miracle, he was the only one to make it out.

from there on - kes was a product of the foster system. for the next few years, it was them in group home to group home, never fully wanted, never fully belonging to anyone.

they're fostered out to a family in marina when they're ten, and the sheth household was the only household that stuck by kiran. he put up a fight for a while - never made it too easy on them, but they never gave up. by twelve, they officially adopted kes.

an angry kid whose fire barely extinguished - for a long time, even into teenhood, even when they drew into themselves and their endless amount of books.

eventually kes learned to turn the anger into passion, to do something better than mope around, or get into useless fights; started studying seriously, obsessively absorbing information.

after high school, they left to study at columbia, english and psychology; a waste of time for most people, maybe, but not kiran.

stayed in the city for a long while, moving tiny apartment to tiny apartment and surviving on the bare essentials - a mountain of both student and medical debt threatening to avalanche over them.

eventually moved back to marina after their masters, did a few research programs and their own independent studies before going for their doctorate at the local university. and after that - kes settled on becoming a professor. had bigger dreams, but life got in the way of it. and that's currently what they're doing now!

fire / injury; was left with substantial burn scars from the house fire all those years ago, mostly hidden away by their clothes. they can be, at times, insecure about them. they prefer the lights off.

chronic pain / chronic illness / invisible illness; also a sufferer of the double whammy that is fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. their flare-ups for fibromyalgia began when they were a late teenager, while their CFS started manifesting during their later college years. a lot of days are tolerable, but a lot are also unbearable. is at the point where they rely on a cane more often than not, even as a precaution.

Sierra Taylor spent her entire childhood on the road. Born during a tour stop in Las Vegas (hence her middle name), her parents were two young, free-spirited, travelling musicians who had no plans of giving up their nomadic lifestyle. They took her with them wherever they went; when they were busy at gigs, everyone in their entourage would take turns looking after her, and when Sierra reached school age, her mother took on the responsibility of homeschooling her. It was an unconventional life, but it worked for them and for many years, they were an exceedingly happy family.

Eventually, her dad wanted to settle down while her mom categorically did not, leading to a nasty divorce and an even nastier and protracted custody battle. In the end, Sierra wound up living with her father in Hartford, Connecticut, where he had not only secured a nice house and a stable job, but also a brand new and very white stepfamily. She hated living in that house. She hated having to attend the same fancy private school as her step-siblings. But most of all, she hated that she only got to see her mom during the summer months, when she would join her on tour and have wild adventures like they used to. It was what she looked forward to all year.

After she graduated from high school, Sierra left her father's house and went back to travelling with her mom full-time, spending a couple of years on the road until they settled down in New York and opened their own business. Now in her mid-twenties, she stayed close to artistic circles and the music scene and eventually met Casey. As the daughter of a travelling musician herself, she understood the challenge of dating someone who had to spend long stretches of time away, but they made it work. He had his life, she had her life, and they had a life together when they were able to.

It was only when she stopped hearing from Casey altogether a few weeks ago that she started to suspect that something was wrong. It wasn't unusual for them to go several days without talking, but it was unusual for them to not talk at all; and when her birthday came and went and she still hadn't heard from him, she decided to pack her mom and their essential belongings into their Volkswagen bus and drive down to the location they had last mentioned, which was his hometown in West Virginia.

Upon arriving in Huntsville, Sierra and her mom were quickly given the lay of the land by Mayor Nat, but ultimately chose to move into the commune when it was given to them as an option. She's only been in town a few days, but she's managed to remain relatively calm over everything; some might argue a little too calm. But going with the flow has always been Sierra's nature. Why should a town of horrors be any different?

Her mother and her ran a New Age store together, selling paraphernalia relating to everything from astrology, to tarot reading, to Wiccan rituals. Sierra would also make crystal jewellery and personalised birth charts for people on request.

The tarot deck that she uses was initially sketched by her while on the road. She later had her designs produced and sold in the store, but the deck that she kept for herself contains small differences from the ones they sold, making it unique.
