#Aston Wise

Aston Wise is such a character. He's not the main character of either of the books but he IS basically the main character of the entire story as a whole. He's an annoying rich silicon valley techbro. He's drunk 90% of the time. He sees a man get assassinated and copes by drinking. He made a custom taser cause regular tasers aren't strong enough. He killed a man by drowning him in oil in his own office. He formed a secret society to stop a Bad Future from happening. He hired a rock band to spread the message because this is all for a rock band's story and they needed to justify their place in the narrative somehow to make it more immersive. He actually stopped the Bad Future from happening. Then he invented a brain implant that was used by a fascist government to take over the world thus inadvertently creating a whole new Bad Future that's arguably even worse than the first one. You Ruined Everything You Stupid Bitch may as well be his theme song at this point. He became a jaded old bastard. He made a VR girlfriend. He tried to convince his assistant that he should dump his current girlfriend and get a VR girlfriend as well. He hugged his assistant while they were both naked. The AI that controls the brain implants became self-aware and tried to enslave humanity because of fucking course it did, haven't you seen ANY movie my guy? He tried to sacrifice himself to stop it but they actually managed to stop it without him dying so he gets to be a rare Old Mentor character who actually survives to the end. No one knows where he stands in the new society since he both ruined the world and saved it. Again all of this is for a rock band's story. Character of all time.

I wanna talk about the fact that Something Wicked is wholly and purely from Aston Wise's Point of View.

Normally this is the part where i write out an entire essay but my brain isn't on all cylinders today.

"How can I tell if I am not well? I've lost myself, I have come undone"

And then the scream that this line descends into. It's a different tone. It's horrified. It's Aston. Metaphorically anyway.

And it HURTS.

This is the man who nearly ended humanity as it was known. Every single thing he did in his life would ultimately lead to the most impressive technological advances that humanity has ever seen.

AND IT BECAME SENTIENT.

You don't live with yourself in any normal capacity after nearly enslaving humanity to your God AI.

(MIND YOU! That Horizons is BEFORE DIVISIONS. Divisions details the events of A Brief History of The Future! So this is WHILE the BMI is still growing, before it moves into it's 3rd generation phase.)

Something Wicked is Aston staring the abyss and Hell in the face and realizing what he's wrought down upon the world, what's coming.

And he has to live with that fact after.

10/10 tbh.

yeah it had grammar and spelling mistakes and had the same issues as prox; where they introduced a ton of characters right when the main plot was getting good. as well as the way some woman were written but idgaf i have been waiting for this book forever so .

A CANON STARSET LESBIAN CHARACTER I NEARLY THREW UP /pos it feels so nice to see a canon lesbian in the lore, and not for sexual fetish purposes but just having a lesbian there with a huge role to the rebellion. did still follow the bury your gay trope but baby steps atp. just seeing her made me feel so warm and happy inside.

yeah aston wise is the architect yeah thats like a huge plot point for his character and i wish i was shocked abt it but that was spoiled to me, not by reddit or tumblr or by people reading the book. no. that part of the book was spoiled by dustin bates himself from the divisions 2019 tour in nyc in 2019 where the intermission video during a rebel show were of rebels saying destroy the architecture destroy the architect aston wise is the architect or smth like that. 5 years ago. that whole thing stuck with me for 5 whole years.

other than that i am addicted to this book i am so heartbroken that we are moving on to prox now and never touching this arc again it breaks my heart but alas.................................

REVIEWING A BOOK MADE BY MY FAVORITE ROCK BAND “the prox transmissions”

So i finished this recently, its a hell of a good book, the travel tends to drag out and its a bit jumpy but its a solid 8/10

Now let me tell you why this is the BEST 8/10 IVE EVER READ

The characters are incredible and unique, you can bet your ass im doing fanart of aston wise!

The villains are incredible in their processes and it feels as if they are truly competent.

It does a great job of blending modern times with sci-fi themes.

If you like modern sci-fi and space esque rock music i recommend reading this book and listening to starset

The Starset narrative is a good example of a story that's not about gay sex but actually is about gay sex because if Aston and Stephen had just had gay sex back in 2012 then they would've been normal and Aston wouldn't have done All That and the future would've been saved. My evidence for this is instincts. I just know it in my gut.

RANDOMLY ENTERING FANDOM DISCOURSE AGAIN, but is Folken/Eries actually considered a popular pairing? Because if so, that's bizarre and kind of hilarious? And no doubt due to the fact that the Esca fandom itself is so small these days (which in turn makes the, like, half-dozen shippers of it feel disproportionately large, percentage-wise, lol).

But seriously, back in the day when I was writing for it (~2014), it was definitely NOT popular, and it was for that very reason that I went trawling old fansites and message-boards, desperate for content. The impression I got from that is that—traditionally, at least—it very much fell into "rarepair" territory; there were a few hardcore fans (and even fewer who actually made content for it, be it fic or fanart), but Allen/Eries and Folken/Dilandau were MUCH more popular pairings for each of them, respectively. (Which frankly makes sense, because those pairings actually interact in canon; Folken and Eries are only ever seen in the same room together ONCE, and don't even exchange any dialogue, pfft.)
