Just a reminder that there are certain areas of Metropolis Zone where the Asteron badniks can actually be reached and destroyed by the player, which reveals they are indeed powered by animals like other badniks.
I've done this myself on my old Sega Genesis too, and not as Super Sonic (it was in one of the vertical shafts in Act 3, iirc). Despite their spiky appearance, Asterons are perfectly safe to spin attack, just like the Asteron ninja stars in Sonic Mania.
The messed up thing though is that the Asterons in Sonic 2 only release animals if you can destroy them before they self destruct, which would imply the animals don't survive the suicide attack.
Damn. That's pretty effed up, Eggman. lol

Asteron from Sonic the Hedgehog 2
I need to update the textures, the rust is just appearing randomly at the moment so that’s something I need to fix. But first I think I need to remodel some pieces to reduce the poly count a bit

AI Prompt: Write an entry in Dr. Eggman’s diary about his badnik, Asteron.
Dear diary,
I was doing some routine checks on my badniks today when I noticed something odd about Asteron, my starfish badnik. I mean, I always knew it was a bit of an oddball, what with its tendency to spin around like a maniac and shoot lasers out of its tentacles, but this was something else entirely.
It turns out that Asteron has developed a new hobby - knitting! I caught it sitting in the corner of the room, quietly knitting what looked like a scarf out of some spare wires it had lying around.
I was initially a bit put off by this unexpected behavior from one of my badniks, but then I thought, why not? Maybe I could market a line of Eggman-branded scarves and hats made by my very own badniks! It's genius, I tell you.
Of course, I'll have to do some market research and maybe get some feedback from my trusted advisors, but I think this could be a real moneymaker. And who knows, maybe Asteron will start a trend among my other badniks. Knitting badniks - it's the future, I can feel it.
Until next time,
Dr. Eggman

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) Ending: Super Sonic Sweeping
I like Hill Top Zone!
Yeah sure it’s blue Emerald Hill with a mountain aesthetic and some lava and, level design wise, it’s definitely the weakest of the game, but I really vibe with both the aesthetic and especially the music, they give the stage a really unique feel to it that’s very cozy
Mystic Cave is a favorite of mine. It’s a bit cramped and the pit of doom is a bonafide dick move but how many levels in this series are set within dark, spooky caves?
Oil Ocean is where the game seemingly starts to drop off for some people, but personally this level is fine, the only issue being the sea horses being dicks
Metropolis on the other hand is a bit of a bitch
Now I will say that this level is nowhere close to being as hard as people always say. Sonic games in general tend to be pretty low in terms of platformers ranked by difficulty. Metropolis is easier than your typical Megaman level, Hell it’s way easier than just about anything in Castlevania 3. The issue isn’t Metropolis’ difficulty, it’s its tendency to feature some very annoying enemy placement.
Let’s be clear here: the player running into obstacles that come from off screen too quickly to react is a universal issue across ALL 2D Sonic games. ALL of them, with pretty much no exception. It’s an inherent flaw of the formula that you can’t help but run into when you decide to have a game be this fast while also being a side scroller. It’s just something that you’ll need to accept on some level if you plan on enjoying these games, Sonic 3 as well, as good as that game is, is not exempt from this. But even by those standards Metropolis can just get straight up annoying with it. The worst are those sections where you slowly ride those cog wheels upwards, but if an asteron hits you with its spikes you plummet all the way down, you gotta off screen the thing in order for it to come back down and it’s just a slog. Plus it’s 3 acts rather than one, mainly due to one of them being from a scrapped level. I also think that, aesthetically, it’s nowhere close to Scrap Brain. It’s...fine with its gear theme, but it doesn’t feel like Eggman’s base, and it doesn’t carry any environmentalist messages with it. I actually won’t knock off Sonic 2 for not being as “environmental” as the first game though. I mean when you really think about it the only Sonic games that truly commited to that angle were Sonic 1 and CD (Colors too, if you count Planet Wisp), the latter pretty much being a jacked up Sonic 1 anyway. Sonic 2 only has Eggman kidnap animals, but otherwise it’s just about stopping him from using his Star Wars knockoff. It’s a standard save the world story. So is Sonic 3. And SA1. And SA2 etc
Again I don’t “hate” Metropolis Zone, I think you can do much worse in terms of bullshit hard stages (this isn’t even a blip on a sub atomic radar when compared to Gate’s Stages from Mega Man X6), but it’s definitely that one part of the game that makes me go “alright it’s that time now”
You know what makes it more palatable though? Super Sonic
I don’t wanna get into any discourse over Super Sonic’s use as a plot device in later games, I’m referring to him as a purely gameplay element in these games when I say that I absolutely love him here
Of course it’s partly due to the inherent satisfaction of getting such an insanely OP powerup as a reward for completing 7 hard special stages, but it’s also because Super Sonic is not a literal win button and still requires some skill to use properly: you need to collect at least 50 rings before you can use him, you gotta keep collecting more in order to keep the transformation going, speed may be greater yeah but this also makes him harder to control over tiny platforms so you have to be careful. There’s always something going on when you play as Super Sonic, which means you can’t just sleep on the controller when you activate him, you have to put in the effort to actually MAINTAIN him.
My favorite aspect is how he, in a way, can encourage you to explore the levels more throughly. Since you need rings to maintain the transformation you will likely have to scour the place for extra rings and ring monitors, which keeps giving you an incentive to explore and be rewarded for it even after getting all 7 Emeralds, which Sonic 3 will be especially good at doing
I have mixed feelings on the Death Egg Robot. On the one hand I like how climactic it feels, especially for such a simple early 90s platformer and while on the one hand I appreciate the challenge...it can also be way too steep, mostly due to this game having limited continues
Now this was an issue in the first game as well, but it’s worse here because, simply put, the game is longer and you stand to lose more, especially the Chaos Emeralds. Plus getting extra continues here is harder: in Sonic 1 you just had to collect at least 50 rings while inside a Special Stage which wasn’t too hard, here you need at least 10K points at the end of an Act, which requires you to both beat it in a short time and collect a big number of rings without losing them. If you’re using Super Sonic this may paradoxically make reaching this goal harder since he drains rings. While I haven’t gotten a gameover in this game since I was 7, I definitely remember it feeling like quite a kick to the nuts
And I know that some people may say that this stuff was common place back then but...not really? Games like Castlevania and Megaman had infinite continues plus password systems to help you get back to where you left off. The most Sonic 1 and 2 have is a cheat code that brings up the level select...and that just feels wrong

Verdict on All classic Sonic Zones pt 3 (Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, & Sonic Mania)
Sonic 2: Emerald Hill Zone: Listen, what if we take Green Hill Zone, And Push it Somewhere Else? Emerald Hill Is actually Better than original Green Hill by Music Only. Everything Else, Green Hill Tops. Chemical Plant Zone: I Love It but Hate the Mega Mack. It's So Stupid to jump in a section that has moving platforms. Aquatic Ruin Zone: I Live for the Music, I Love the Level Design, And Love the Boss! Casino Night Zone: I Like It, But it's not my go to Night Zone. The Boss is Good Though Hill Top Zone: Oh yeah Man! This Is what I Call a Sonic Zone, I don't even need to say any more cause u know it, i know it, it's a Wonderful Zone! Mystic Cave Zone: If U Play this Zone, Ur life Will Change! It's an Amazingly Great Zone! Hidden Palace Zone: If Ur playing The Phone Version of Sonic 2, Its AWESOME! But The Genesis Version... Eh, not so Much. Oil Ocean Zone: Not a Fan of the Boss or the Level Design. But the Music is Pretty Dope. Metropolis Zone: I Prefer the Sonic Heroes One than this one, i hate the Asterons (The Starfish Enemies), The Slicers (The Praying Mantis Enemies), The Shell Crackers (The Crab Enemies), And the Level Design. The Music is Bopping, but it's not worth it to go through this zone. Sky Chase Zone: Calm Music + Slow Level X Auto Scroller = I Don't want to Be in It, Period. Wing Fortress Zone: Great Music, Risky Jumps, And Creative Level Design... Count Me In! Death Egg Zone: I Hate This Zone
Part 4 coming soon

My personal issue with the Heavies is that they don't have enough presence as I'd like.
If you were to ask me I'd say Magician is my favorite by a wide margin because she gets the greatest sense of presence: she knocks Knuckles off the Tornado and creates tge act 1 miniboss, she creates the Fang/Bean/Bark illusions that crash the plane forcing you into act 2 and she then has her very unique battle. If you count Encore mode than she even starts that.
By contrast all the others really only show up for their respective boss battle and a really brief encounter during the final boss, hell unless you're playing as Knuckles you won't even meet King in a one on one match
I often see them compared to Robot Masters but that's exactly the issue: Robot Masters are more prominently present in the games as a whole: they're on the boxart, they're on the stage select screen, the stages are THEMED after them (the only stage in Mania themed after its Heavy is Press Garden, MAYBE Titanic Monarch if you consider it King's stage instead of Eggman's but....yeah no), the stage music is often considered their own personal theme, you get a weapon from them serving as a permanent reminder of them and you fight them all a second time for real instead of just making brief cameos during the final boss
I think they would have benefitted a lot from either being present in both of their acts like Magician is, or being recurring bosses, though with each boss fight being different in some way
More spotlight would have been great, but I really don't have an issue with how they were, since despite their limited screentime, they were still able to show off a lot of personality (Magician tipping her hat, Gunner freaking out when his missiles are deflected back at him...), they had clever moves (King calling back to Super Mecha Sonic, Shinobi using Asterons as shuriken...), and the levels they were featured in still complimented them. (Studiopolis fitting Gunner's police motif, Mirage Saloon fitting Magician's flashiness and serving as payoff for the Fang/Bean/Bark wanted posters seen throughout the zone, Lava Reef fitting an adrenaline junkie like Rider...)
Sonic not facing King at all until Egg Reverie was admittedly odd, but I don't think it's too big of a deal. But hey, putting their Classic Only status aside, maybe this is all the more reason for them to come back in a new game... but nooooo, we gotta have Sage come back instead, because it's always the shit/mediocre characters that get second chance after second chance. First the Deadly Six, now this...
(Also, don't a lot of Mega Man fans complain about the boss rushes? I know some fans accuse them of padding, and I can see where they're coming from since they usually don't have any notable changes from the first time around.)

Commission #5 of my friend’s cleric minotaur Asteron!! I love him. He’s a good lad. I wanted to go for like a messy tarot card-ish style. Idk if it landed quite as well as I had wanted but I’m still loving it and had a lot of fun.

The New Dawn of the Galaxy
The galaxy was at peace—at least, for now. Zara, having faced the price of her power and emerged from her trials on Asteron, stood as a symbol of that hard-won peace. But peace, as she had learned, was never permanent. New threats arose not from the Void, but from within the hearts of the people it had once consumed.
The Rise of Factions
Zara and her crew found themselves at the forefront of a new challenge: the emergence of factions that sought to fill the power vacuum left by the Void’s destruction. While the immediate threat of galactic annihilation was no longer looming, the disarray left in the wake of centuries of conflict was palpable. The galaxy was vast, and in every corner, new leaders were claiming territories, invoking old ideologies, and striving to control the new balance of power.
The Eidolon navigated the shifting tides of politics, diplomacy, and war. Zara, however, was not one to shy away from the complexities of leadership. She knew that her journey wasn’t just about restoring peace—it was about ensuring that peace was sustainable, that it would last for the generations to come.
The Galactic Council
After weeks of careful deliberation and negotiations, Zara convened a gathering of the galaxy’s most influential leaders in a neutral system, a space station known as the Galactic Citadel. It was the perfect place for discussions—far from the reach of any single faction, and rich in history as a site of diplomacy and peace.
Zara’s arrival at the Citadel was met with a mix of reverence and suspicion. Many still remembered the power she had wielded, the very power that had defeated the Void. She had become a symbol of hope, but also a figure of uncertainty. What would her next move be? What role would she play in the galaxy’s future?
As she entered the grand chamber of the Citadel, the murmurs of the gathered leaders quieted. Zara took her place at the head of the room, flanked by her trusted crew—Kiera, Tarek, and the others—each standing as a pillar of support.
“I stand before you not as a ruler,” Zara began, her voice echoing through the chamber, “but as a Warden, a protector of peace. The Seal may have repelled the Void, but it cannot govern the hearts of men and women. That is for us to do.”
Her words resonated across the room, reaching the ears of warlords, diplomats, and emissaries alike. They were all here for the same reason: to ensure that the fragile peace they now enjoyed would survive.
A New Threat Emerges
Just as the council began its deliberations, a warning flashed across the Eidolon’s communication screens. A massive fleet was approaching, but this time, it wasn’t from a familiar faction. It was a fleet of unknown origin, its ships unlike anything they had seen before—dark, imposing, and seemingly void of any insignia.
“Who are they?” Kiera asked, her voice tinged with fear. “They’re not responding to any of our hails.”
Tarek’s hands flew over the controls, trying to identify the fleet’s intentions. “We’re receiving strange readings. They’re not hostile, but they’re not friendly either.”
Zara’s mind raced as the council session came to an abrupt halt. The leaders of the galaxy exchanged uneasy glances, but Zara remained calm.
“We don’t know who they are yet,” she said. “But we can’t afford to make enemies now. Let’s hear them out.”
The Envoy from the Shadows
The fleet’s leader soon made contact. A tall, cloaked figure appeared on the Eidolon’s holo-screen, their face shrouded in shadow. Their voice was calm, but there was a strange, unsettling resonance to it.
“We come from the Edge,” the figure said, their tone measured and deliberate. “We are the Harbingers of the Last Epoch. Our time has come.”
Zara’s brow furrowed. The name was unfamiliar, and yet something about the way the figure spoke filled her with unease. “The Last Epoch?” Zara asked, trying to make sense of it.
“Our people have watched the galaxy from the edge of the known universe,” the figure continued. “We were the first to witness the Void’s rise, and we were the last to see its fall. The balance you have worked to restore, Starlight Warden, is fragile. The Void may be sealed, but there are other forces—older, more dangerous—that stir in the dark corners of existence.”
The Harbinger’s words sent a chill through Zara. She had fought to protect the galaxy from the Void, but now it seemed that something else was on the horizon—something far more insidious.
A New Threat
As the Harbinger spoke, Zara could feel the weight of the responsibility upon her shoulders once more. The galaxy was far from stable, and the peace they had fought for could easily be shattered. It seemed that the very balance of the universe was constantly under threat, whether from ancient, forgotten forces or the hubris of those who sought to control it.
“We are not here to conquer,” the Harbinger added. “We seek only to warn. There is something worse than the Void, something that has been biding its time, waiting for the right moment. The Last Epoch is upon us, and when it arrives, even the Seal will not be enough to protect you.”
Zara’s heart sank. What could be worse than the Void? What could threaten the galaxy in such a way that even the Last Seal couldn’t contain it?
She stood up, her voice steady despite the rising unease. “What is it? And how can we stop it?”
The Harbinger’s eyes glowed faintly, a cold fire behind their shadowed face. “It is known only as the Shadowborne. A race older than time itself. They have remained dormant for eons, but their awakening will mark the beginning of the end. They are beings of pure darkness, capable of consuming entire stars, entire galaxies. They feed on the essence of life itself, and their hunger is insatiable.”
A Dangerous Path
The room was silent. No one dared speak. The Shadowborne were a myth—stories whispered by the oldest races, warnings lost to time. But here they were, told in the voice of an enigmatic envoy, their warnings too grave to ignore.
Zara knew that this was no longer just about protecting the galaxy from the Void. There was a greater threat out there, something that could unravel everything they had worked for. She turned to her crew, their faces full of determination.
“We’ve faced the Void together,” Zara said, her voice filled with resolve. “And we will face the Shadowborne together, no matter what it takes.”
The galaxy had known peace, but it was fleeting. The Eidolon was no longer just a ship of explorers—it was the last hope of a galaxy on the brink of a new darkness.
A New Journey Begins
Zara’s quest had only just begun. The galaxy, in all its beauty and fragility, would need her leadership once more. But this time, the threat was not just a dark force from the edges of space. It was something older, more terrifying, and far more elusive.
Zara and her crew would journey to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, seeking the truth behind the Shadowborne and how to stop them. It was a new age of heroes—and Zara would stand at the forefront, as the Starlight Warden, protector of the galaxy, and the one who would face the shadows that sought to consume all.
