9/25/24 WIP Wednesday (Closed) | TBD AU

They hit up plenty of Barbecue joints, bars, and various attractions including catching a movie at the Alamo draft house where Andrew considered going and watching another movie just to get another Whiskey banana split.

They go-karted, went to an arcade, and Andrew got to watch as Neil shot an Uzi at a gun range. It shouldn’t have been as attractive as it was but Andrew didn’t like to lie to himself.

They had fun and just like the weeks previous the days flew by until they were loading up the Ferrari with their bags and the various souvenirs that they had bought. Andrew hadn’t slept as well as usual the night before, staring at Neil asleep in his own bed through the darkness.

Rambled about this before on this post, but I really wish they would explained how the search party is able to see out of their masks, even if it was a single panel of Emma pointing out something like nearly imperceptible eye slits.

Older, classical masks like those of the elder Bayons (compared to those of Bayon II's wife and children), Yverk, and Geelan's clan incorporate a pair of symmetrical, horizontal, and frequently vacant eye holes among their designs.

In the chapter 90 bonus sketch, this is mentioned as respecting tradition, which I interpret as a holdover from the days of demons hunting humans, and the intention of that incorporation was to play on pareidolia-enhanced fear among humans who, out of habit, would look toward the horizontal pair of eye holes first when gazing upon demons in combat and would frequently be treated to an unflinching, menacing abyss. It's a good subtle tactic to unnerve them before they take in the rest of the mask.

Once the farm system was instituted and demons weren't regularly warring with humans anymore, it became unnecessary and seemed to fall out of style among the general population who weren't banished like the Geelan clan.

I assume this is the main reason the kids don't opt for horizontal eye holes. There's also the issue of demons potentially catching sight of their human eyes, but there has to be some black cloth to work with in the bunker that could have lined the masks if they couldn't get whatever magic Bayon and Yverk use for no other eyes or skin to show through their horizontal mask sockets.

Either way, it's one less thing to make them stand out from the crowd when they're already contending with their comparatively short statures, human hands and feet, and having to wear perfume.

Do you think one could attain decent-ish ability to read Japanese just by studying kanji? Specifically asking because the kanji learnin' service "wanikani" is the single Japanese resource that works best with my brain, but then there are separate resources for grammar and vocab and and and.....

You will get REAAAALLLLLYYY far knowing only the kanji but you're going to have to know hiragana and katakana at some point too. Tofugu, the company that did Wanikani, has two mnemonics-based guides for the kana that are basically Wanikani Lite. They're how I learned the kana and I swear by them.

Hiragana are especially vital to learning kanji; you won't be able to use 99% of Japanese-English dictionaries without them. BUT they're pretty easy and the rules for using them are consistent. You won't have to remember any irregular exceptions for any of them.

I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard really good things about the Crystal Hunters manga series as a fun/low stress way to learning Japanese vocab and grammar. It eases the reader into new concepts and then repeats them throughout the chapter so you remember them. There are free vocab and study guides/lists for each chapter too. Might be worth checking out once you get some kanji and the kana under your belt? The first book is also free.

So the thing that i love about the Georgie-Martin conversation is that neither person really comes out as the Winner of their argument

Martin doesn't convince Georgie to help Jon (a thing he refuses to do himself even though he is capable) and honestly alienates Georgie further from helping, and Georgie, after a back and forth about her reasons, finally lands on not wanting to be a part of any of it (a valid choice to make, but only comes after unfair comparisons between Jon and Melanie)

and one of the things I find interesting is how Jon and Melanie both fall in between this argument! Melanie's ongoing recovery is propped up as a matter of personal will rather than a series of very traumatic choices, one of which Melanie had no say in and admits she would never have agreed to. Jon's status is either a victim who just needs help or someone who "isn't trying" and is even actively looking for ways to be worse (and while Georgie precedes this with "It's not about worth", she then adds an implied "but").

It's a complicated situation, and I think falls into the larger theme of systems that give no support to the people they hurt. Georgie isn't responsible for helping Jon. No single person is. But without supports in place, people slip through the cracks and are then explained away as "not wanting to be better", especially by people who haven't seen the whole picture (as Georgie admits in season 5). Who is responsible for helping people out of situations when they might've put themselves there? Who is responsible for the people that other people don't want to be responsible for?

They're both worried! They both have people they care about! Neither of them know what to do or entirely what's going on because in their own ways they've both abstained from knowing what's going on! It's a great scene!

A very nuanced take on this complex story, thank you for sharing!

After examining other panels from the chapter in question, it would appear that you’re correct, since I can’t spot any concrete evidence of her hair being tied back.

However, I stand by my original assertion that Miss Sutcliff’s beautiful hairstyle is ponytail-adjacent—and, while my memory of certain details may have grown hazy, the delight expressed by us fangrelles over our lady’s appearance in this chapter was effusive and real. Deservedly so! ❤️

God, I can't believe it took me until your posts about how the Weapon Humans are literally objectified by everyone, including themselves, to realize that the reason Yoru can't turn Denji into a weapon is because he already is one!

What I find really funny is that the analysis I made about the weapons was written before Fujimoto confirmed their nature, so it was a bit of a game of chance and I was lucky enough to have been right.

And you're absolutely right to pursue this analysis, chapter 149 refers to it in my opinion. I think it's pretty strong of you to have made the link before that chapter came out.
